Kuala Lumpur Park

PROJECT 1 Examine The Periphery

The periphery is, by its very nature, impossible to grasp. It is “a boundary, whether hard or soft, determine or vague, that separates an object from its environment”, quoted from Elizabeth Grosz. Defined mainly by what it sits in relation to, the periphery lies somewhere between a formal centre and an in-between. But where exactly does it starts, where does it stop, and where does it starts again? What happens in the in-between? And, most importantly, what is it like ‘inside’ the periphery, within the thickness of the line? We will look into the periphery of our vast urban park that houses botanica garden, bird park, tugu negara and butterfly park in adjacent to our old historical downtown KL.

Study KL Park from topography ,historical Chinese settlement as well as highway, to recognize boundary between old building blocks and newly erected architecture which are modern office, skyscraper, mosques and so on. Red color is my journey experience when across the boundary. River is critical reason why ancient Chinese come there in old time, is important trade transportation before, but no longer use it today. One side of river is uneven landform, where major modern buildings position after Malaysia Independence. Another side is flat, where old traditional building choose.

Study KL Park from city road and government planning (zoning) to recognize boundary between each area. Additionally, also exist big conceptual boundary at where resting, working, living area interacting. Where have dense and regular road are residential area. Mediate density, at the same time broader is working place where company office usually at, those area that have sparse road is resting place, possess large green and also within KL Park range.

Main Project Site, Sekinchan

PROJECT 2A Collaborative Site Mapping

Our context, a town in Sekinchan, is part of some of the largest rice exporter in the country and fishing industry. The region bears ongoing traces of temples and religion places, industries, housing, dereliction, landscapes and speculation. Located at the state of Selangor, the particular place of interest is sandwiched by two larger than the city itself landscape which is the plantations and the sea. The plantations area runs with well organized irrigation system. Within the plantation itself, small towns were built in centered on an old religion temple which the locals believe that the gods are protecting their harvest.

MY CONTRIBUTION TO GROUP SITE MAPPING

REMOTE TOWN

PADDY FIELD

URBAN

SEA

SITE SYNERGY INSTALLATION Urban concrete building is not harmony with its nature treasure, proposal should address this issue, make urban get benefit both from sea and paddy field.

Propose urban and paddy field intertwist

Urban growing high rise Building

Recycle waste fish net as building materials Propose canal connect remote town and urban, as comfortable transportation replace long walking. Bamboo rich at local, possible material that used in design proposal

This stage, we do comprehensive analysis to Sekinchan (our design site), find existing issues as to site, construct Architectural understanding, at the same time, we have to utilize finding getting from project 1. I find urban like second world to its surrounding environment with little relationship, next urban strategies shall soften such hard boundary.

Recycle garbage build up a pavilion at sea shore

Sekinchan fish villager throw garbage into sea and harbor, these garbage flow into sea along sea water up and down, cause great pollution to ocean. Water even emit unpleasant odour.

PROJECT 2B Work In Paper

To start the main design project of the semester, we will have to intensively explore urban and building scale in paper. Paper collages and models allow a quick repetition and variation of ideas, as well as ongoing adjustments. we will have to produce a series of WORKS IN PAPER, to be able to produce two distinct pieces of work.

URBAN STRATEGIES MAP

Propose a bicycle lane start from sea shore until remote Chinese town. High way in the central urban block two side, so adapt underground tunnel. Willow tree plant along paddy field lane, shade vicious sunlight.

PAVILION

Picnic building, provide basic water and electricity, building near river, people fishing at river or pavilion and cook at this building.

Propose pavilion at sea shore. To watch sea spectacular view. Make a floating deck in front, people stand there, let sea water wash foot. Transparent wall become signal tower at night. The bridge cross river, make pavilion accessible.

Urban full of dense high rise building, but do not have any piece of green land or open square in between. Propose communal building and space among high departments.

Citizen celebrate festival, hold activities, have wedding here. Bazaar for locals sell specialty to tourist. Open theater for people to perform local art and have meeting.

Find gap between residential house, make into bicycle lane paved with timber floor. The floor can be used as public park if put some pot flower and plant, people sit on floor or have a walk, chat with friends, enjoy slow life. Bicycle is a shortcut from paddy field to sea-side urban, underground tunnel able people cross high way.

One bicycle depot, bicycle store, rent and return bicycle at this position.

Short rest place, have bench and shade here.

Propose deck above irrigation ditch, allow people cycling above water. Sinking bicycle lane is good place for people escape sun burn as well as view paddy filed at eye-level. Risen channel pavilion let people see paddy field beautiful view at high position, get broader frame sight. Pavilion is also good place for people sleep, sit, chat with friends.

Since site near Chinese school, programs proposal relate to Chinese mainly. Building expansion evade original bird nest building, stride above corner wall of playground. Original site is a swamp, I keep site feature and incorporate in my design characteristic. Meanwhile I pay attention to town existing shaping, in case alien from periphery.

Developed first model in novel way, intend to make crazy form. Try to overturn previous design. Lifted space able people see large range of surrounding landscape and townscape, view can reach sea. Space scatter in between original site tree.

Case Study, Padi Box Hotel, Sekinchan

PROJECT 3 Live Work

From now onwards, We work should embrace urban, building and detail design in a much focused manner. The work has to be clearly legible and well communicated, visually and verbally. What is our project really about? be precise and also concise. As this is a critical time for our project Development. All projects demand a careful re-visit of site analysis. Simultaneously, focus on chosen location, design and programme.

SITE PICTURE

Site

Proposal building site right at cross point of different areas. Original site is wet swamp, some trees sporadically grow in the site. Left side is Chinese School with playground, a fruit garden which grow lots of mango tree and other fruit tree at its right side. Front part connect main town street, from this street forward, is residential house row by row. Bottom side is endless paddy field. The site emerge small tranquil lane over the time as it connect to paddy field walk way. A new Taoist temple erected up recently, this temple pretty famous at local, temple bring in many people, make the area around temple become a more public space. A bird nest building positioned near proposal site, cause some inconvenience to site planning as well as architecture design, but in the end I turn this site issue into design opportunity.

Ground floor deck is exposed wood timber floor, recycle fisher village wood material especially wood platform and use back to this deck.

Reuse old swamp as part of architecture space design.

Picnic area also pave with timber wood that come from recycling fisher village wood materials.

Roof garden timber floor use wood that come from recycling fisher village wood materials too.

Faรงade material use wood that come from abandon boat plank at fisher village.

FINAL MODEL SCALE 1:250

SECTION A-A SCALE 1:200

SECTION B-B SCALE 1:200

Chosen site is narrow strip, Don’t have enough space satisfy required number of car park, adapting double car park can solve this problem.

In my personal interest, I do not want accommodation space very large, occupy beyond half total volume of building. In the other hand, Mainly student and younger drop by this proposal building, thus use double bunk bed to satisfy required number of accommodation.

Accommodation block is a “bridge span, this solution use special designed cantilever structure to achieve building design. Staircase climb central column, serpentine through and evade bracket. Partial solid masonry wall become s

STRUCTURE ALTERNATIVES

Support top floor by Piers structure. Piers occupy little Space, but can design some interesting small space such as closet fastening on piers later design.

ROOF AND FAÇADE AXONOMETRIC SECTION

In my opinion, a good design should be concise as possible but still have interesting form, I try to minimize structure, let inner space layout follow its structure, upmost important things is that building shall fit site well, no disorder site, functions run well meanwhile have nice aesthetics. First of all, design concept derive from project 1 studying, my project 1 mainly explain tangible and intangible boundary around KL Park and depict what experience when go through every boundary, I got deep finding after project 1, then propose urban strategies at same idea, resolve the issue at Sekinchan, finally let everyone experience throughout fun at Sekinchan, I improve circulation, make lane accessible and more convenient from sea shore to remote town, based on proposed circulation (new bicycle lane), continue propose programs along the lane, Sekinchan have five layers which are sea, oil palm plantation or fishing village, urban area, paddy field and remote town, I erect up buildings with proposed programs at each zone, let building consolidate each zone, aim to make every zone better than past, address issues happening there, each building become also a centre for the zone where it positions. In general word, Programs is point, proposed circulation is line, programs at each point together with proposed new circulation system help Sekinchan function well. Sea shore area, I design a pavilion, let people watch spectacular ocean scene, at the same time, pavilion used for gallery same as rice gallery, gallery introduce fisher village and fishery industry. Plantation has been long time that do not contribute profit to Sekinchan, look like abandon space right now. Due to plantation have open land, turn plantation into picnic place for citizen. The problem to urban is too dense, especially for those people living around department area, so propose a communal green space for citizen, provide a public place for peoples to hold event or celebrate festivals. As for paddy field, long it is really, and Malaysia sunlight never merciful, to help cyclist and pedestrian kill time and get fun, I design sinking bicycle pathway, lifted pathway and lifted view tunnel, which can make route interesting. Willow trees plant along paddy field balk, shade below people, willow can survive in rich water soil. Remote town possess Chinese school and Chinese temple which bring in lots of people, I propose some programs relate to school, programs are students activities commission, Chinese art training center, students hostel, library and gallery. Students activities commission hold match, public activity information, organize activity and so on, put the space at corner of playground above wall, allow student activity commission have higher view point to supervise playground usage, I also drag basketball court from where far away school to position under student commission. Chinese art training center, provide opportunity for Chinese students to study Chinese traditional art and other subjects, library near classroom, make walk shortest, arrange two spaces near town street, because large population get in and out building, according to town planning, area near street will develop building, so make form regular as bungalow row in opposite side. Gallery is a bridge connect studying and living place, gallery present students works every day. Hostel accommodate those learner who come in group or class, first floor is female, top flood is male, a long “strip connect car park, and lift in the middle of car park. Hostel and commission form slant up to evade original bird nest. Timber deck at ground level below hostel is public space, allow peoples chat together, meet friends and do activity. Picnic place at corner of private fruit garden, people across original garden wall and reach there, provide a point that people able look beautiful garden. Once general form making done, do interior layout base on programs, little adjustment is neccessary also at this moment.
