Winter... a season of hot chocolate and blankets Kinga Siejek

Don’t you just love waking up in the morning, getting ready for the day, and all you want to do is take a nice shower and brush your teeth.

BUT when you open the tap barely any water comes out, making you realise that it actually is winter.

Or how about having a look at possible ideas on what to do this upcoming recess in the new Cillax section?

It felt like just yesterday that I woke up at 06:00 and the sun was up, the breeze was warm, and I had to decide whther to wear a dress or shorts for the day. Now it’s big and baggy jerseys and jackets, scarves, gloves, and my pink woolly boots.

Hmmm. Not really your thing? Well there are a lot of sections to read, catch up on the latest happenings around Campus, and finding out about the latest Campus and National sports.

Now to make matters a little bit worse; it is also exam time. Meaning trying to concentrate on the work in front of you, while also trying to find the perfect way to completely cover yourself up in your favourite blanket from head-to-toe.

As you are reading this, you are probably taking your hundredth ‘study break’ for the day.

You know it, I know it. Studying is tough work, especially in winter.

BUT only for a while! After that, it’s back to the books and getting ready for the remainder of your exams!

Just remember one thing: Stay strong! While it may feel like a waste of time now, you will reap the benefits of the long nights and endless paperwork when you walk down the stage on graduation day.

But until then, you need to calm the nerves, organise your notes, and keep breathing. Oh, and remember that recess is just around the corner, to help detox before the next semester.

Now, since you are already reading my editor’s letter, you might as well quickly go make yourself a nice cup of coffee (or my personal favourite, hot chocolate; with little marshmallows of course), cocoon yourself in a nice fluffy blanket, and have a look through the rest of the edition.

Vuvu’s Soapbox What’s in a name? Hint: It is more than you think!

Have you ever waddled into someone and you could not remember their name? Quack! Even worse – you have a name that sits on the tip of your tongue; but you just cannot spit it out!

Instead, you end up standing there looking like a complete feathered idiot... staring at the person with utter annoyance and fear whilst trying to process hundreds of possible names – none of which seem to fit the beak in front of you. In a situation like this I usually think I can get by without having to actually say their name – you know, just talk around it. Off course, this does not always work since the nameless acquaintance will say something like: “Hey, send me Tshepo’s e-mail address. Just message it to my Facebook page” Quack! Double quack! On your Facebook page... really? Well, that won’t be happening anytime soon; because I can’t remember your name!

Most of us have experienced it. You are introduced to someone, only to forget their name within seconds. You rack your brain trying to remember, but can’t seem to even come up with the first letter. Remembering names is hard – and what to do about it? Quack! Give me an odd fact and generally it will stick – but introduce me to someone and milliseconds later, the name is gone...

But what am I going on about? Although I am absolutely terrible with names (something that always seemed odd to me because my memory is otherwise quite decent), I believe that you can tell a lot about a person, simply by knowing their name. Take my name, as an example: Vuvu de Vaal I was hatched in 2010 and since my parents represent a rather peculiar union of a sharpbeaked feathered soccer fanatic and a refined environmental freedom fighter – my name

is nothing but unique. Did you know that my name does not only stem from the Zulu word “vuvuzela” (referring to a tribal instrument – usually a Kudu horn used to summon villagers to a meeting) but also the Tswana word “Lepatata Mambu” – a soccer horn which produces a loud monotone sound? Quack! I tell you, I am a waddling-honking-hissing mix of cultural swag – not to mention proudly South African.

When tracing my feathered family roots, I belong to the Anserinae goose family.

Why then do people still confuse me with a duck?! A duck of all things feathered? Confusing me with a duck is like not being able to tell the difference between a guinefowl and a chicken!! Ducks star in Disney movies (Daffy Duck, Donald Duck and Darkwing Duck), have regular shaped beaks and are smaller in statue, whereas geese have sharp beaks, are physically stronger with a longer neck and – dare I say, do not stem from Mallards! We are also known for our loyalty and good family values.

William Shakespeare once said “There is no sound as sweet as the sound of one’s own name” and he was spot on! If only I can remember my cousin’s name... I think it starts with a “B”, or even maybe with an “H”... Any takers?

Time has a way of moving quickly – it seems just yesterday that we were welcoming the new intake of first year students on campus, and now we are already writing exams. The lush green banks of the Vaal River is now clad in a carpet of golden leaves and the early morning fog announces the presence of winter.

I have come to realise that time is limited and very fleeting, and for this reason I want to reiterate the words of the late Steve Jobs: “Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drown your own

Always remember that as a university student you have the opportunity to go a great distance – and with this I mean that you have the wonderful opportunity of continuing on your journey toward fulfilling your dreams. Therefore, you should remain in a state of constant motion. This is not a

“stuck in the mud” place – the campus represents a fluid place of forward movement that with each passing day will take you further along in the realisation of your dreams. So, go with the flow and know that as you greet each day with a smile, you are positioning yourself to grab opportunity with both hands.

As you prepare for the exams, do not become placid or complacent.

You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to remarkable individuals such as Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michelangelo, Mother Teresa, Leonardo da Vinci and Albert Einstein.

Good luck with the exams and enjoy your well-deserved break.

May you come back refreshed and ready to challenge yourself even further – be it intellectually, spiritually or physically.

Marissa to compete for continental crown Annette Willemse

The 22 year old Marissa van den Heever, a student from the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University, will represent South Africa in the 5th Miss University Africa (MUA) pageant later in the year. The Miss University Africa is the only pageant on the continent – comprising 54 African nations, that unites contestants across religious beliefs and language barriers. It also has a large international viewing audience with coverage in the UK, USA and across Africa whilst several leaders on the continent have publically pledged their support to this unifying initiative. The winner of this pageant becomes the official International Queen for Africa and a United Nations Student Ambassador.

The pageant aims to advocate for the empowerment of young girls throughout the continent as well as offering protection and support to victims of poverty and war. Past achievements include the distribution of food items and clothing to war victims in Liberia; payment of medical bills and distribution of food items to the patients in Togo; the construction of a school for handicapped children in Yenagoa Bayelsa; free breast and cervical cancer screening for women in Bayelsa and Benue as well as medical assistance to cancer patients at the National Cancer Center in Kampala, Uganda.

of Educational Sciences and first got a taste of pageant glory when she was crowned as her residence’s reining beauty queen in 2012 (Miss Acacia). This feat was followed by her historic crowning as the first-ever Miss NWU Vaal as well as being the first runner-up in the coveted Miss SA Campus.

According to Marissa she is passionate about teaching and she believes that as an educator she can pro-actively contribute towards shaping patriotic, accountable and responsible youth. She has already made an impact in this regard by writing a stage production for the Sedibeng District of Education’s Literacy Enrichment Program – an achievement that earned her regional acclaim. She is also an avid animal rights advocate and spends her free time as a volunteer at the SPCA. You can support Marissa by voting for her as your favourite contestant on the MUA website.

A night at the Library - Read-a-thon challenge William George

The second Read-A-Thon challenge where students from our campus were challenged to read from the afternoon to the morning of the next day was held at our library. This was a 12 hour event, starting from 17:30 and ending at 05:30.

The reading challenge was for all eight residences. There were 66 students participating, resulting in residences having unequal participants.

House committees from each residence had to submit a list of 15 participants, but that was not the case, as expected.

Life of Pi written by Yann Martel was the selected book used for the night and a film of the same title, directed by Ang Lee, was played to provide more insight of the book.

Meals, coffee and Energade were provided to all the participants during the challenge.

University mugs were also given to everyone who joined.

Students were allowed to bring blankets and pillows so they could keep warm while reading the entire night.

“The turnout of student’s was not as good as expected”, said Mrs Hendra Pretorius, the Library Manager, “There could have been more, but its still okay, because we can handle the amount of the students we have now.” The prizes for the winning residence are NWU memory sticks for each member and a trophy for the winning residence. “We are plan-

ning on having more prizes next year, and we would also like to provide cookies and snacks during the night”, Pretorius said. She explained that they are learning every time they host the Read-A-Thon challenge.

There were merges of daystudents, Acacia and Oryx, as well as on-campus residences, Vergelegen and Jasmyn to boost the number of participants.

One of the participants from Vergelegen, Kenny Modise, 3rd year BA (Language Practice & Communications student) said, “I’m disappointed because students from my residence didn’t pitch, but I enjoy reading, so I don’t mind doing it for my residence.” He also added that he didn’t know the members from his group, and this was a good opportunity to meet and interact with fellow residents.

Dimitri Petermann, 2nd year BCom (Chartered Accoun-

tancy) student from Thuthuka, said, “This is a good event because students are not used to reading a book and finishing it in one night. It’s also good that it was hosted a night, because it’s hard to schedule a 12 hour event during the day, due to students studying in the library at the time.” Thembekile Tom, who’s the Santrust Prim, said: “This is a good initiative, to pick up a book with a bunch of students and read with them, I think it’s all about having fun.”

Winners were determined by the number of correct answers given and the time it took them to answer. The winners of the night were day-students, Acacia and Oryx, who won with a score of 20/24, tied with last year’s winners, Santrust.

Acacia and Oryx won by submitting their answers before Santrust or any other residences. Thuthuka came in 3rd place, followed by Faranani.

Longfellow took the 5th spot leaving Vergelegen and Jasmyn to last place.

Comrades Marathon a celebration of camaraderie Annette Willemse

Staff members and University Club runners did us proud at the 88th Comrades Marathon.

Nine of our sixteen participants crossed the finish line.

The supporter’s team from the North-West University, that included representatives from the Institutional Office and the three campuses, offered logistics support and motivation to the runners whilst the presence of the group also enhanced the university’s image.

The group set up a water point in the region of Camperdown.

Members of the Vaal Campus community recently took part in the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial and by doing so not only raised awareness but also reaffirmed their support to those infected and affected by the pandemic. The theme of the 30th annual memorial was “In Solidarity” and according to the Campus clinician, Sr Mapeete Malumba, the initiative represents an important platform to inspire current thinking to improve the HIV response, to address the stigma and discrimination often associated with the pandemic as well as providing support to those

people living with the disease.

During the event several community leaders and healthcare professionals took to the stage to deliver messages of hope and motivation after which candles were lit as a symbolic gesture of solidarity. Key issues that were raised by the guest speakers, include: ensuring access to treatment, prevention and cure; reducing stigma and discrimination; increasing resources for HIV treatment and research as well as promoting greater involvement by people living with HIV. Globally the event saw 155 countries honour those who

have lost the fight against the disease. According to Sr Malumba the Candlelight Memorial is much more than just a remembrance service – it serves

8 as a pro-active campaign to raise social consciousness about HIV/Aids and with more than 33 million people living with the disease, it furthermore serves as an important intervention for global solidarity by giving hope to new generations. During the event both staff and students were afford-

ed the opportunity to undergo a voluntary HIV screening test. * The Campus supports the UNAIDS strategy “Getting to Zero: Zero Aids related deaths; Zero new HIV infections and Zero Stigma and discrimination”.

Re-Psych_Able about professional practice Anjonet Jordaan

Tuesday, 28 May saw the launch of a new academic society on the Vaal Campus. RePsych-Able is a student society especially for psychology students in the various psychology specialisations.

The name is not arbitrary or simply clever, it represents the following: Remember there is always and opportunity present Psychology values the well-being of our society Able to make a difference According to Dr Hayley Walker-Williams, psychology lecturer in the School of Behavioural Sciences, the aim is to “get all psychology students excited about Psychology as a profession and involved in the practical application of psychology – to bring it ‘home’ and in doing so contribute to the well-being of our community”.

The Honours students are involved in the initiating committee, together with Mr Christiaan Bekker and Dr Walker-Williams. The very successful launch resulted in more than 200 membership application forms being submitted by students and approximately 130 students attending the career information session during the evening.

During the information session both psychol-

ogists registered in the different categories (clinical, industrial, educational, research) and a mediator addressed the students on matters pertaining to psychology professions, training niches and career opportunities.

This was just the first of many events to be hosted regularly. The next event will be on 30 July and will be a screening of the film “A Beautiful Mind”, which depicts the story of famed mathematician John Nash, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.

The newly formed society has received generous support from the director of the School of Behavioural Sciences, Dr Elrie Botha, as well as from Prof Ian Rothmann who, on behalf of the Optentia Research Focus Area, donated funds to help promote the society.

Re-Psych-Able is already actively reaching out to the community; they hosted a food drive in aid of child protection week. Their target for this initiative was 150 cans of food.

SASCO takes to the streets Annette Willemse

On Monday 20 May, a group of students under the banner of SASCO (South African Students Congress) handed over a Memorandum of Grievances to members of the Campus Management Committee. The memorandum referred to grievances pertaining to matters such as electricity usage; transport, the Student Centre, Riverbend and Santrust; NSFAS waiting list; Meal-A-Day and general maintenance issues.

The gathering leading up to the handing over of the memorandum – although peaceful, set in motion a chain of protest action across the campus. The situation escalated throughout the week and on Thursday, 23 May the group set out to disrupt classes; interfere with scheduled exam sessions and threatened to bring the campus activities to a complete stand still.

In response to the initial Memorandum of Grievances the Campus Management as well as the SRC labeled the protest action illegal.

After a 48 hour response period, Management addressed the grievances in an open letter to the SRC President, James Ncedani, since the SRC represents a democratically elected body of students. In their response, the Campus Management recognized the right of people to assemble, demonstrate and present petitions, provided that this right is exercised within the prescriptions of the applicable legislation. SASCO responded to management’s response by setting the letter alight.

Protest action continued throughout Thursday, 23 May, amidst heightened security and police presence. Following a marathon deliberation between the Campus Management and representatives from several student organizations – including house committee members, a resolution was reached on the way forward.

According to the Campus Registrar, Mrs Elbie Steyn, the safety and well-being of all students remain a top priority and it is therefore of cardinal importance that the lines of communication are kept open. * The much anticipated Mr and Miss NWU Vaal pageant had to be rescheduled due to the protest action.

Ndumiso is Mzansi’s newest One Day Leader Annette Willemse

A final year BCom Economics and Trade student and former Student Representative Council (SRC) member, Ndumiso Hadebe was announced the winner of One Day Leader 2 on SABC 1. The 21 year old resident of Arconpark, Vereeniging competed over a 12 week period by executing challenges and debating leadership skills based on modern day social, economic and political issues.

According to Ndumiso he is humbled by the acclaim and grateful for the opportunity afforded to him to inspire not only his peers but also the upcoming young generation. “I believe that South Africa needs a new kind of leader and as such a new generation of motivated young people who are driven to become masters of their own destiny. Success has nothing to do with monetary or material wealth but rather the ability to make a difference,”

says Ndumiso.

Ndumiso has done a lot of work in assisting the community such as being a youth leader, councillor and mentor at Word of Life Baptist Church.

He is furthermore involved in a youth organisation aimed at empowering young people through workshops and education. This organisation is run in conjunction with the SedibengEast District Municipality.

At the heart of Ndumiso’s vision for the future lies his commitment towards serving and supporting others in their pursuit of achievement and excellence – hence he says that there is no greater accolade one can achieve than knowing you made a difference in someone’s life. According to Ndumiso he is inspired by people who achieve what they set out to do by fulfilling their full potential.

Ndumiso is of the opinion that relevance and accountability are currently not only some of the most critical leadership issues in South Africa but are also slowing down the rate at which social change is taking place. “I believe that being a true South African means that you carry with you the spirit of greatness,” says Ndumiso and adds that as South Africans we should be driven by the common cause of creating a greater country for all its members.

The television programme, One Day Leader is about unearthing and nurturing young talent. The show focuses the public’s attention on critical social and economic issues facing the nation. As the winner of the second season of the One Day Leader programme on SABC 1, Ndumiso walked away with a Shanduka Black Umbrella three year mentorship programme to start his own business; R50 000 cash and R10 000 towards a community project of his choice.

Journalism students share Open Day stories Annette Willemse

The saying – practice makes perfect, rang true for a group of journalism students from the School of Languages during the recent Open Day event.

The students – all busy with their Honours degree in journalism, were tasked to take to the road and by making use of technology and social media platforms, tell the stories

of prospective students in new and dynamic ways.

According to Jacolette Kloppers a lecturer in the School of Languages, the aim of the exercise was to help develop the next crop of journalists working to keep the world informed, educated and entertained.

Skills that were honed during

11 the Open Day news coverage include creating timely data to accurately frame public debates, writing stories as well as finding new and creative ways to use technology to tell stories.

The interviews conducted were shared via several social media platforms, amongst other the Facebook page of the campus newspaper – Student 24/7.

Open Day at Faculty of Economic Sciences & I.T. Roche Artz

When in high school, we all have dreams and aspirations of what we want to become in the near future. The only way in which we could find out how our dreams can become a reality, is to attend Open Day , and bring a list of questions to help you find your path to greatness.

On Saturday, 17 May, our Campus hosted its Open Day. The Faculty of Economic Sciences & Information Technology could be found at Building 12.

Getting some comments from those representing the faculty, Mr Re-an Müller, Lecturer in BCom (Marketing) said, “I’m looking forward to see what we getting next year, student-wise”.

He went on to explain, “I expect usually difficult questions from the learners, and I’m only marketing Marketing.”

One of the marshals for the faculty, Nakita Maseko, MA (Economics) student said, “I expect the day to be informative as possible for the high school learners”. She went further to explain, “so that they know where they stand right now, in order to know how they can improve their marks to get entrance, most especially into the Faculty of Economic Sciences & I.T.” Belinda Peters, one of the prospective students, who is currently completing her matric at Transvalia Höerskool said, “I’ve already decided that I want to study BCom Sports Management, and we want to look at the Recreation Management.” Belinda’s mom, Linda, said, “We just came to get more information, to know more of what the course entails, and what the course would be like, alongside the possible career opportunities.”

It seemed as though there was a great interest in the study of I.T. Lucky Rathoko, a prospective student from Tharabollo High School, in Palm Springs said, “I want to study I.T. as someone told me about it, and it sounds interesting.” Nicholas Mofokeng, also from Tharabollo High School said, “My first option is

I.T. as my interest lies in this field and I love computers”.

Kamohelo Ratshakne, 2nd year, BCom (Data Mining) student, who was a marshal at the Open Day said, “Today is more of a fun day”.

He said, “The learners are happy to learn, and for me it’s fun and entertainment going along with academics, in terms of prospective students choosing a career for next year.”

Open Day as it could be seen, was a day filled with much activities and loads of information.

You could be certain that you left with an abundance of knowledge to build a path of success with the help of the Faculty of Economic Sciences & Information Technology.

Best of the best - Faculty of Humanities Anjonet Jordaan

The 23rd of May saw a gathering of the Faculty of Humanities’ 2012 most exceptional students. During this gala event the Faculty of Humanities rewarded its most successful students in its various programmes.

The evening was made even more special by the inclusion of the students’ parents on the guest list to celebrate their children’s admirable achievements. Students who attained an average of more than 80% were rewarded with a certificate and a Van Schaik gift voucher for their hard work. Next, the best student from each year group and programme was acknowledged; and finally, the best overall student in each of the programmes.

The best overall students were each asked to give a short speech about what they consider to be the key elements to their success.

Eunice Pretorius, best overall B.Ed. student spoke eloquently on what she believed to be the determining factor of her success and stated that “the average student knows what to do, the outstanding student does it”.

The other best overall students were Ayesha Omar in the BA Behavioural Science programme, Alexander Oosthuyzen, the best honours student in Psychology; and Zelda Naude in the B.Ed. Honours Learner Support programme. Alexander argued that for him, having a keen interest in the subject you’re studying makes a great difference in the level of success you attain. Each of the best overall students received the enviable prize of a Notebook Computer and a printer that was donated by the Vaal Triangle Campus Rector, Prof. Thanyani Mariba.

Golden Key welcomes new academic achievers Annette Willemse

During a recent awards ceremony more than 80 academic achievers were welcomed into the fold of the prestigious Golden Key International Honour Society. Golden Key is an internationally recognised, non-profit organisation affiliated with over 390 universities throughout Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, New Zeeland, South Africa and the United States. The Society’s mission is to enable members to realize their potential by connecting individual achievement with service and lifelong opportunity.

Membership is by invitation only and is based purely on academic merit. Membership is therefore limited to the top 15% of degree students, from all disciplines, which have completed at least one year of study. The key-note speaker was Dr Marieta Jansen van Vuuren, a senior staff member within the Directorate Academic Development and Support Services.

Apart from welcoming new members to the society, Golden Key International also recognises individual students for academic achievement, leadership abilities, community engagement undertakings and extra curriculum activities.

The campus award was made to JandrĂŠ van der Merwe. Another highlight of the event was the inauguration of Me Dine du Preez, Aca-

SGI-SA: Putting theory into practice Annette Willemse

The Serious Games Institute of South Africa (SGI-SA) is involved on all fronts of the North-West University’s activities. Serious games are simulations of real world events specifically designed to allow the player to solve an array of problems that may occur in specific real-life situations.

FinMan – a case study at the Vaal Campus Financial Management has been seen as a stumbling block by many students in their quest to completing their School of Accountancy qualifications. In SGI-SA’s pursuit to identify novel ways of connecting students with the study material, they have decided to use a serious game for this academic module. FinMan , a 3D game written in Unity and making use of Blender for the modelling and animation of its characters, is a serious game in the sense that it makes use of gaming technologies to promote an engaging environment in which effective learning of financial management concepts and principles can take place.

Best practice dictates that subjects which require students to make calculations need to be practised on a continuous basis. Through observation and interviews with students, it was found that students do not invest enough of this required practice time into their homework. As a result, students fall behind in their work and are not able to maintain

pace with the increasing difficulty of the subject matter.

FinMan is developed with the purpose to motivate students in doing exercises in an immersive and explorative environment. FinMan specifically focuses on the Time Value of Money (TVM) principle, as it is the foundation for the rest of the financial management concepts. Various game world challenges within FinMan have been designed and developed to address common difficulties that students face in financial management.

One important issue is that many students do not sufficiently understand the scenario-based questions (case studies) they are confronted with.

They find it difficult to dissect the scenario into the relevant information required to successfully answer the questions.

In order to progress through the game, students are required to put the facts they find into categories. For instance, a fact ma7y be that you would like to invest R10 000. This fact points to the present value of a TVM problem. By iteratively doing this exercise (i.e. playing the game), students start to recognise these facts when they find them in questions.

Another critical issue that has been identified is that many students do not know how to use a financial calculator.

FinMan provides fun tutorial scenes that guide students in calculating the answers to the provided questions using an

onscreen financial calculator.

The game calculator has been modelled to suit the FinMan’s look and feel without compromising the recognition of real calculator button inscriptions.

Furthermore, the tutorials are designed in such a way that students have to answer the questions correctly in order to progress.

Tried and tested A first version of FinMan has been put through a series of focus group research discussions and has also been piloted with a group of last year’s Financial Management students. The feedback received from the debates and pilot study point to a very positive recognition of the added value a game such as FinMan will have to the Financial Management module. FinMan will be fully integrated into the Financial Management module in the second semester of 2013. * SGI-SA intent to statistically show the effectiveness of the FinMan implementation by comparing 2013 key performance indicators, such as student throughput and average, with those of past groups.

Verona shines bright - on and off stage Annette Willemse

Ever since she can remember, Verona Goslett has dreamt about performing on stage and through hard work and dedication this talented third year student from the School of Languages is set to make her mark in the South African entertainment industry. During a national talent search competition for the female lead role in the much anticipated stage production, “Liefling”, Verona performed and sang her way to a spot in the final showdown. The talent search competition, which took the format of a kykNET reality television series, was won by Liza Brönner.

Liefling, the musical The big screen production of “Liefling” saw more than 459 000 people buying tickets to watch the movie whilst an astounding 60 000 DVD’s were sold. The soundtrack of the movie reached double platinum status.

A national talent search got underway when the female lead actress, Lika Berning, indicated that she would not be available for the theatre production due to family responsibilities. The producers - Paul Kruger and Linda Korsten, in conjunction with Huisgenoot magazine and kykNET, came up with an auditioning concept similar to that of a reality television program that came into being on 28 April and saw the top 20 contestants take to the stage over a seven week period. Several high profile entertainment personalities served as judges, including Johan Heystek, Nadia Beukes and André Schwartz.

The male lead role will be played by Bobby van Jaarsveld and the production is set to start in June in Pretoria.

Fierce competition The reality television series focused on the ups and downs of twenty talented hopefulls that were chosen from more than 500 entries.

Apart from their stage personality the contestants also had to impress the judges with their voices and singing ability. The Top 6 contestants were: Liza Brönner, Melanie Steenkamp,

Leanie Ekermans, Caroline-Grace Haasbroek, Verona Goslett and Illana van Wyk. More about Verona Verona is no newby to the entertainment business. In 2012 she made her television debut as Brionay, a character in the acclaimed soapie, 7de Laan.

Academically, Verona is also a very good performer and in 2011 she was awarded as the best first year student in the Faculty of Humanities after obtaining distinctions in all her subjects.

With the first semester almost over, students need to start preparing and making arrangements to pay their fees for next year. To help you avoid standing on long queues only to be turned away, Student 24/7 interviewed Ms Xoli Ngubo the head of bursaries and loans on campus. To bring you all the answers you may need regarding the National Financial Aid Scheme.

NT: Who qualifies to apply for NSFAS XN: NSFAS is for academically deserving and financially needy students. If your gross annual income is above R160 000, it is not likely that you will qualify for NSFAS. The student needs to get an average pass of 60% and above to qualify.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS First year students must have obtained an APS-score of 22 during their final Grade 12 exams and must apply for NSFAS before 31 October of the preceding year of study.

Senior students must pass at least 60% of the modules taken to be allegeable for a NSFAS loan in the next year. The closing date for senior students is 30 September annually.

NT: What are the required documents when applying for NSFAS? XN: • Attach the most recent proof of income of parent(s)/guardian(s)/spouse or any other member of the household that earns an income (salary-/pension slips not older than three months). NT: Do honours students qualify both part time and full time?

XN: Yes NSFAS does give us a separate funding for postgraduate students NT: When you apply for a loan, is it guaranteed that you will get funding until you finish your studies?

XN: No, it is not guaranteed. For the NSFAS loan, a student needs to apply every year and it depends on the results and the income whether the student will qualify or not. It is not automatic.

NT: How does ‘top-up’ work?

XN: If a student signed a contract that does not cover the full outstanding amount, that stu-

dent might qualify for a top up if according to the means test he/she still qualifies for more and we still have funds to assist him/her with.

This is a rare situation as the funds are never enough.

NT: How and when is the student expected to pay back the loan?

XN: Once the student is employed, he/she can start paying back the loan.

NT: What happens if the student does not pay back the loan?

XN: NSFAS works with SARS and home affairs to track down students who have finished their degrees and force them to pay. NSFAS depends on the money that is paid back by those students who have graduated and if they don’t pay, it means NSFAS will not have enough money to give to higher education institutions for other students to be assisted.

Elegance wrapped up in royal bliss Asiphe Tsolo

In a spectacular event that drew the attention of students, lecturers and even celebrities such as Zano, fashion designer of The Soil; the Miss Jasmyn and Mr Verries pageant was off to a royal start. The event held on 10 May was organised by the Jasmyn and Verries House Committee, and judging by the appearance of the venue, a lot of preparation went into the event.

“Preparations started before the first quarter recess and the final touches were done this morning,” said Neo Panane, Jasmyn’s Prim.

Although the event started late, once it got going, everyone was excited and even forgot about the delay. When asked what his expectations for the night were, 2nd year Law student Zukolwethu Marambana said that he was interested in seeing who would win; and was also looking forward to the free drinks offered.

Tensions were running high backstage as the participants prepared themselves, each wanting to show that they have what it takes to be Miss Jasmyn or Mr Verries. Paballo Motic, a stylist for one of the contestants, was overheard saying that she had confidence in her friend and was sure that she would win. It was clear that the judges would have a hard time choosing the winner since all the participants really brought out their best.

Asked why he entered the pageant, Lebo Rantoai said: “I wanted to have experience, memories and something to look back and smile on.”

Rantoai was confident he would win since he had won a pageant before in High School.

The show started with the contestants showcasing their great dancing skills to “Dance for you” by Beyoncé. Between having to dress as their favourite celebrity, dressing the profession they want and the formal wear; the participants put on a great show as some professions were odd and others downright shocking.

The event nearly turned into a bit of a spectacle

when the crowd was not happy with one of the winners for Mr Verries and turned rowdy, forcing the judges to explain their decision; which still left some unsatisfied. The choice of Deliwe Msibi as Miss Jasmyn however was widely accepted by the crowd.

The Projects and Sports Officer of Jasmyn, Butle Mokoena, could not express her gratitude enough as she thanked all those in attendance, including the judges.

The night seemed like it would never end as the crowd waited for the after-party, in which DJ Warras from Yfm provided entertainment and the liquor provided made sure that people were relaxed and in a party mood.

The Alumni Office of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the NorthWest University (NWU Vaal) recently hosted its first-ever Young Alumni Celebration and if the overwhelming turnout for the event is anything to go by, it is set to become an annual event. The Young Alumni Celebration project is set to actively involve alumni members who have graduated in the last 12 years.

The project – the brainchild of the campus’s Alumni Advisory Committee, aims to motivate new graduates to join the alumni association and by doing so stay connected with their alma mater with all the opportunities and benefits the alumni association has to offer.

The North-West University’s new payoff line, “It all starts here” informed the theme of the event and therefore the very talented Idols runner-up – L’loyd Cele graced the stage at the event. According to Alwine Naude, the Alumni coordinator on the campus, the Idols competition marked the start of Cele’s journey to success in much the same way the University serves as the starting point to professional and academic success. In his address the Campus Rector, Prof Thanyani Mariba stated alumni reunions and events excites him because it is at these events that he can see how the education and life experience gained by students –while at the NWU Vaal, has assisted them in their endeav-

ours since they graduated.

“The relationships that you have developed throughout this process will forever be united by the bond you share with your alma mater,” explained Prof Mariba whilst adding that as the Young Alumni fraternity the success of the members bear testament to the accomplishments of the Campus and the role alumni have played in contributing and sharing the NWU legacy.

“You are bridge builders and you have the responsibility to bridge the gap exists between the current student fraternity and the world of industry and business.

June 16 will always remain central in the history of the struggle and the history of South Africa. It produced heroes and heroines that left their mark on this earth and who paid a supreme price, sacrifice and lost their lives in the process of acquiring freedom. June 16, is the day of reflection, a day for introspections, selflessness, and sacrifice.

It is a day on which we must all look back and ask ourselves what freedom means? Whether or not our conducts reflect people who appreciate the meaning of freedom. As many fails to celebrate this day in the dignified manner

it deserves; by attending those political events that venerate this day, or taking a trip to places like the Apartheid museum and learn about our history on how we end up living in this freedom that caused so much unbearable pain in the hearts of many South African .

Now that we have acquitted ourselves with the history of the youth of 1976 and challenges that they’ve faced and overcome; what can be more better than tackling issues that we’re faced with as the youth of today and come with solutions or strategies to these issues/challenges that we’re facing as the youth of 2013.

Challenges such as unemployment, HIV/AIDS pandemic, financial aids for higher learning.

Looking at those people suffering from all the above issues, wouldn’t this be good for our county? For the youth to come up with solutions to put an end to all this! Let us also be remembered with something meaningful and become the heroes and heroines of today and the next generation.

Many mourn the loss of Vuyo Mbuli

When many mourn the death of someone, that person, surely, must have been a legend.

It was something quite unexpected when veteran journalist, Vuyo Mbuli, well known as the Morning Live presenter, who signed off saying, “Sharp, Sharp”, suddenly collapsed while watching a rugby match at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 18 May. The news of his passing circulated mostly on social media platform, Twitter. It was initially thought that Mbuli died of a heart attack; yet, post mortem confirmed that he died of pulmonary embolism.

Leanne Manas, his co-host on Morning Live, tweeted when she heard of Mbuli’s passing, “We created magic together for 2 hours every morning for 9 years. I’m devasted! Not sure how to do it without you. I will miss you so much!”

Tributes kept pouring in for Mbuli at the news of his death. His memorial was held on Wednesday, 22 May, at the Rennaisance Centre at the SABC in Auckland Park, Johannesburg.

A provincial funeral was held for Mbuli on Friday, 24 May, at St.

Melba Chivhungwa, journalism honours student said, “The passing of Vuyo made me realize that you can never know what tomorrow holds as the previous week we were seeing him on TV and the next thing, we heard he is no more”. She said, “I will miss Vuyo’s presenting on Morning Live because he had his own unique way of reaching audiences and this is what made me watch Morning Live every day.”

Cops don’t cry

Traumatised, frightened of the people and the communities they protect. With events such as the Marikina incident and the scandals surrounding the South African Police Services (SAPS). One might wonder what is really going on in the minds of South Africa’s men and women in blue.

On the SAPS website, the head of the SAPS’s psychology division, Brigadier Busi Buthelezi paints a grim picture of what is keeping officers awake at night. She says: “many police officers are members of the public and are dealing with a very angry public, which is also vulnerable”.

Profile of a typical SA police officer:  Most police officers have seen or heard of a colleague who has been killed in the line of

duty.  This makes them anxious and fearful of going out on their daily beat to do their job.  Some even suffer from post traumatic stress disorder because of what they have seen.

What the SAPS is doing about it  The police offer an “integrated approach” through their Employee Health and Wellness Services programme.

Services offered The officers are referred to one of the following:  Psychologist  Chaplain  Social worker  A registered counsellor.  Psychometrist – someone who can conduct tests to understand what may be affecting the officer.

Before we are quick to judge the police men and women reactions to situations we should take the time to consider that they are all human being to start with.

The School of Accounting Science in the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Information Technology is hosting a firstever Accounting Winter School for Grade 11 learners.

The Royal bliss shines Jasmyn and Verries Malenyalo Molemane

On Thursday 9 May, the Jasmyn and Vergelegen (Verries) residences hosted their Mr Verries and Miss Jasmyn pageant at the Big Lapa.

It was scheduled to start at 18:00 and end at 21:30 with an entrance fee of R20.00. The theme of the event was “The Royal Bliss”.

The MCs (Master of Ceremonies) for the event were, Mbalenhle Mthombeni, 2nd year, Bcom Financial Accounting, Bonganjalo Mthimunye, 3rd year, Bcom Financial Accounting and Olivier Tshimbidi, 3rd year, Bcom business financial management, as the event was opened with the prayer, the show started.

The judges consisted of Maserame Mokhachane, 1st Princess of Miss NWU Vaal 2012/2013, Jeremy Mooi, from NWU Vaal Campus Marketing and Communication and Zano Sithetho, designer of “The Soil”. Getting a few words from the designer Zano Sithetho, he said “I am looking for contestants who have the right walk and know what to wear. The

glamour and class of the evening, filled with singers, dancers and poets made the audience smile.The contestants had a run of Royal Bliss, dress your model, imitate your favorite and evening wear.

In the female category, the winner who was crowned as Miss Jasmyn 2013 is Deliwe Msibi, 3rd year student, BA Communication and Politics. The 1st Princess is Katleho Mphande, 1st year student, BSC BMI Quantitative Risk Management, whereas 2nd Princess is Nelly Mlangeni, 2nd year student, BSC IT. In the male category, the winner who was crowned as Mr Verries 2013 is Brian Charlie, 1st year student, BA Psychology and Sociology. The 1st Prince is Mukul Irkhede, 1st year student, Bcom Accounting, whereas 2nd Prince is Zaine Jacobs, 1st year student, BA Law. Academic Day Mojalefa Mofokeng

They say knowledge is power and what more interesting that being empowered by people who are at the positions we intends to see ourselves at one day. On the 11 of May, the Faranani house committee brought in its residents few of motivational speakers just before we start our 1st semester examinations to address the significance of education in our youth, community, society and the nation at the whole and the importance of being at university as well as the ways of overcoming the challenges that are faced by students.

The event was set to start at 11:00 but ran a little late; because students, in my observation, were afraid to be empowered or it’s just this thing called African time that they usesas an excuse for being late. More or less the event did continue from that low note to a high one, as the speakers were there with enthusiasm just waiting for Farananians to avail at the hall.

Speakers who were invited to this event were Mr Dannie Meyer, who’s the public management lecture at NWU Vaal, and the Thuthuka house parent. He shared with us the importance of public management in South Africa and the opportunity that a student can benefit from studying public management. He also encourages students to study hard and get their degree in minimum duration.

Ms Busi Khaba the politics lecturer at NWU Vaal, and Longfellow’s house parent, whom shared her life experiences that she encountered so far.

Throughout her speech I found that her life experiences or challenges are related to most African students when arriving at university, especially those from rural areas. One such challenge is that of the language barriers. I’ve also noticed that Ms Busi had plenty of philosophical advice in store for us, such as, “your past is not always rosy, so make the best of your present to make a better future for yourself”. Getting to know Sister Mapeete Malumba Mamello Bless

Sister Mapeete Malumba grew in a very small village in the Free-State; where there was no hospital. This is one of the things that encouraged her to be a nurse.

Where did your nursing career start?

I started training at Vereeniging Hospital. I was trained as a general nurse at the Sebokeng Hospital. I did mid-wifery, primary health care, psychological nursing and community health in nursing at Bara Nursing College.

Where did you work before you came to the NWU Vaal Campus?

I worked at Lenmed Clinic as a mid-wife from 1988 to 1991. I joined the community and worked as a district nurse from 1991 to 1998.

I then joined the private sector and worked as a Primary Health Care nurse in Soweto from 1998 to 2002. In 2002 I went to New Zealand, worked there as a professional nurse at Oakland Hospital until 2004. In 2005 I joined the Witwatersrand University at the research centre called perinatal HIV/AIDS research unit based in Baragwaneth Hospital until February 2008. From there I came here to the NorthWest University Vaal Campus and I am working as a Primary health Care nurse.

What motivated you to be a nurse? • I grew up in a small village in Free-State which had no hospitals; this made me develop the love for nursing. • I love helping people so that I see them well. • I also loved the way nurses do things, their uniforms and the dignity they have.

What motivated you to come work at the Vaal Campus?

When I worked at the Perinatal HIV/AIDS Research Unit I realised that many young people had the HIV virus. So I always told myself that if I had an opportunity to work with young people and empower them with the knowledge of pre-

venting HIV/AIDS, and I take it. I even thought of opening a school where I would teach young people about the prevention of HIV. So do you think you are reaching that goal?

Yes What are the disadvantages of working with students?

The problem with students is that they think they know better and the feel offended when you tell them the truth.

It makes me feel good knowing that I impact young people; that as adults of tomorrow they will have a good impact in the future.

What motivates you to come to work every day?

The organization is in good governance; it makes me feel valued. I feel I am contributing to the goals of the institution; producing healthy graduates.

As a mother how does it make you feel working with these young people?

I understand the stage they are in, and that most of the time they make wrong choices.

When I am here I am a mother to them and as a mother I should advice and get mad at times.

After interviewing a few students, it was shocking to find out that the state of one’s room does actually affect ones emotions. Well, for some it’s the other way round.

We interviewed Ratanang and this is what he said, “Well Java, for me my room reflects the way I’m feeling at that time; meaning that when it’s messy it usually reflects my being depressed”. What Ratanang is trying to tell us is that for some students, and probably a lot of people that stay alone as well, the state that your room is in tells us how you are feeling at that time. Meaning that if your room is messy, you are probably going through a lot of stress and therefore you find it pointless to clean it up. However, if your room is clean and neat it

means that you are in such a good mood that you even decided to clean your room in the first place.

We also interviewed another student whom had something different to say pertaining our topic, her name is Gomolemo, and this is what she had to tell us, “ Jav’, for me the state of my room affects my emotions.

It doesn’t matter whether I’m happy or sad; if my room is clean then it makes me happy, but should it be messy I get extremely depressed”.

It was a bit shocking to find out that some students get satisfaction, and go as far as to being happy, if their rooms are messy. It made sense because some people do feel more productive if it’s messy; they feel like they are incredibly busy.

Are you doing your final year, and you are thinking of applying for work? Look no further, what you need to do is not easy. Beware of the fact that there are a lot of people who are in the same situation as you, and they all are as eager in finding work or even internships.

The trick to ending up with a job is to have a good searching strategy. Try the internet, but do not undermine the jobs section in a newspaper. You will find open vacancies in respective fields. This is where your Curriculim Vitae (CV) comes in. You must have one that is like non other in the bundle that applied. This does not mean layout; just a simple CV with extra ordinery information on it will do, something that will surely stand out from the rest.

From this step comes the interview. This is a make it or break it step. This is the last chance you are given to actually ‘get the job’. Before the interview, research about the company.

You must be able to tell them what you can do

at their company, and how you will add value in doing that. During the interview, you must be honest and truthful. Try not to say you know everything and the company would be missing out if they do not hire you, rather show them in your answers that they need you.

When given a chance to ask questions, ask about five questions regarding the company, ask them questions like “what are the characteristics of this company’s best employee?”, this is to show them how keen you are in adding value and being the best in what you do.

After the interview, send an email to the interviewer, thanking them for choosing you from the many applicants to come for the interview.

By doing this, you are ensuring that you are not forgotten.

This is vital information to a final year student, whether doing an undergrad or post grad degree. The level of unemployment is too high, and each student must work at making sure they do not add to it. Let us take this information and see ourselves in big positions sooner that we think.

What role can the youth play in ensuring that South Africa reaches its potential and become a successful nation?

The whole of June is celebrated as Youth Development Month in South Africa. This is in commemoration of the 16 June 1976 uprising, which saw the youth of the day take to the streets in Soweto to express their dissatisfaction with

the Apartheid government policies.

This youth fearlessly fought for freedom and a democratic South Africa, and showed the courage and power that the youth had. Although we, as the youth of today, are enjoying and reaping the rewards of what was fought for; serious issues which affect the realization of some of the objectives of our democracy remain.

Unlike the youth of ’76, our fight may not be so political; however, it is equally as important in order to fulfill the rest of the dream of a better life for all.

Youth Month therefore seeks to inspire and empower youth to play a more active role in addressing the economical and social challenges which are still so prevalent in South Africa.

36 Are we doing enough to contribute towards making South Africa a better place in which all its citizens can enjoy a better life?

We see them everywhere we go on a daily basis: our peers stuck in corners with nothing productive to do, girls who were teenage mothers and are now unable to further their studies because of the new responsibilities they have; the boys who are so hooked on drugs that they have become criminals terrorizing the communities; the unemployed with no qualifications and would take ‘anything’ for a job. We see the poverty and the disorder…

We see this, but many people live this. Therefore, is enough being done to help South Africans realize better lives?

“Taking into consideration that South Africa is a young democracy in the international community, I am of the opinion that South Africa is doing well and developing socially, economically and politically. The incorporation of South Africa into a multilateral relationship such as BRICS is a good indicator of the country’s willingness to expand its horizons. South Africa can also look into expanding trade and relations within the Africa(n) continent; this will not only help strengthen ties with other African states but (will also) boost the ‘African economy’,” says Ms Busi Khaba, Political Studies Lecturer.

“There are a lot of challenges that face the young people of South Africa today… however, it remains the responsibility of each young person to take charge of their life and stop shifting the blame on government. I think that the youth should take initiative and be more involved in the affairs of the state. Each contribution counts,” Ms Khaba said.

One of the ways we can work towards a better South Africa is through education. When you understand what is going on around you, it becomes easier to make a contribution.

“Education at home, education at school, church, etc (is what we need)… I see our young people throwing away their futures by doing drugs, abusing alcohol, pregnancy, you name it. Yet what we forget to do is to listen to and adhere to the valuable teachings of our parents, grandparents & other wise elders… their teachings are there for our betterment as youngster's so that we do not fall into the same trap that they did,” says Sylise da Silva, SRC Deputy president.

An Albanian proverb states that “The young have strength, the old knowledge.” It is very important to take advice and learn from those who came before us for they are better informed than we are. They have seen what works and what doesn’t, and it would do us great justice to learn from our elders and then use our youthful energy to act on that knowledge gained.

There is a very important role that youth is supposed to be playing which will lead to a more successful democratic South Africa, because it is a fact that the baton will be passed on to us, as the future

Joseph Sithole, Honours student in Political Studies, agrees. “We need to look beyond government and participate more in government decision-making. South Africa has an abundance of opportunities and it is up to us as the youth to grab those opportunities and make our dreams come true…

Importantly, we the learned ones should plough back into our communities.”

Are we, as the youth, playing our part and doing enough to ensure that we reach positive and sustainable solutions for the challenges we have in South Africa? Surely we cannot wait in the sidelines and hope that government will fix everything?

This year the month will be celebrated under the theme “working together for youth development and a drug-free South Africa”, with the aim of promoting awareness on substance abuse and also inspiring young people to be positive role models in their communities by living sober lives.

My 21st Birthday...

Finally, the month that I’ve been waiting for the past 6 months has arrived. The day I have been waiting for every year with anticipation, but this year it arrives with much of more anticipation compared to the past 20 years of my life.

Most of you might be asking what is special about this month? As it is freezing weather and whatsoever, but for myself, this month marks a special day in my life and will always do until I lie six feet under.

This month marks my birthday which is on 18 June and finally this year it is my 21st birthday.

Now most of you might relate to my excitement of being 21; butI thought it would be more interesting and intriguing to share my life experience with you and give you platform to know me a little more than just a Student 24/7 journo, and lastly to highlight my experiences of being.

I’m Mofokeng Mojalefa, born 18 June 1992 in the small village of Witsieshoek, Qwaqwa as it is known today in the Free-State province. But was not bred there as most of my childhood life I lived at Bethlehem with my mother’s family until Grade 3 in which I attended the nearby Primary School called Nthute Public School. I then had to move to Sasolburg from Grade 4 until I matriculated in 2010 at Kahobutjha Sak’ushusha Secondary School where I lived with my parents with my other

four siblings. Life growing up was pretty much tough coming from a family of five siblings, on top of that being 1st born. Having to take care of the young ones while you are still a child yourself can be strenuous and where dad was the only the bread winner of the family you can just run your thoughts of difficulties I’ve faced; but through it all I learnt that my past will never impede on me from reaching my dream, not my destiny.

As one wise man once said, “our future is certainly not detected by our past for the present will always have an intermediate effect on them”.

In 2011 I then had to take a chill pill that we normally call gap year, because I was one of those KASI ignorant matriculates and I didn’t apply for any institution of higher learning.

I’ll take a script for admitting, and to tell the truth, life was rough that year. Having to ask for R5.00 airtime, since you no longer receive pocket money was a life lesson experience that I’ll never wish for anyone to experience. I then decided to apply in 2011 with my Matric results at NWU Vaal to enroll for the year 2012 as the first year, in the field of Bachelor’s of Education degree. My experience as a first year was not so good not in terms of studies, but in terms of residence, having to split with someone whom you consider a friend only to find out later that in fact this is not the person you can consider one of them.

37 Now I am in my second year doing pretty great and enjoying the life of independency and also joining Student 24/7, has opened more channels in my life that I never thought I’d reach.

Finally, being 21 is like legally doing things that you’ve been doing since you were 16 years old. It’s a final passage to adulthood and since I’ll still be writing my exams on 18 June, I am still uncertain on which day am I going to share a toast for my birthday.

Lastly I’d like to share my mottto with you; it goes like this: “A man without the past is like the man without the face and that’s dangerous, for no one will be able to make an interactive conversation with someone whom you do not see ,for no social network can beat up the power of physical interaction and conversation”.

Exams have already started and by now it’s a fact that no one can manage studying in a cold state. One thing I know is that nothing ever beats a warm room and a cup of coffee by your side to pull an all-nighter. The price of coffee is probably not the friendliest at the moment because it’s the season for coffee, but getting a big tin should get you by. And that also means you’d be saving some money, considering you won’t be buying a small tin every week.

Well for one, wear warm clothes. Keeping warm doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to look hideous and dull; there are plenty of ways to look cute and warm at the same time.

Buy magazines, watch TV, there are millions of ideas on the internet as well... Here’s an example of what I’m talking about...

I bet some of you probably still don’t know how to cook your own soup by now, you don’t have to, there’s ready-made soup at supermarkets, yes I said it; ready-made soup!!!! You should then not have an excuse to study and have soup at the same time. It should take you about 8 minutes to make the soup, and that should fill you up so you saving more time because you won’t have to get up and make food again.

So for all those who love looking good at all times but always believed it is only possible to do so in summer and spring... Think again!! As for ladies, longer hairstyles in winter will let you get away with looking stylish and warm at the same time. So, when changing your hair-do, just try something that’s long and covers your

It goes without question that the biggest thing many of us look forward to the most, is being able to do nothing! However, sleep, television and Play Station do not have to be the only go-to sources for entertainment these holidays. Instead of staying cooped up indoors, here are a few fun ideas

you can use as a guideline to have fun and relax.

• Call up an old friend and go see a movie. Technology has made our lives much easier, but it also takes away from good old trips to the cinema.

This way you get to catch up with your friend, get out the house and still keep warm.

• Go bowling. This is something you can do with not just friends but the entire family as well. Many people are not aware that bowling is consid-

ered a sport, because it is so much fun and the only sweat one breaks is from laughing.

• Go ice-skating. Not everyone hates the winter season. In fact we have individuals who actually embrace the cold. If you are one of these people, a fun way to have fun and get out would be to go ice-skating.

Scarves, gloves and ear muffs are in order for this adventurous outing.

• Try something new, this goes for both males and females.

Save the best for last - Mr Vergelegen & Ms Jasmyn William George

Vergelegen and Jasmym residences were the last residences to host their pageant this year, then they definitely lived up to their theme of Royal Bliss at the Big Lapa, by showing everyone that their residences got Kings and Queens. Everyone who attended the Mr Vergelegen and Miss Jasmyn pageant would attest that this was one of the greatest pageants held this year.

The MC’s of the night were, two beautiful ladies: Lala Motsamai, (BMI Student), Mbali Mthobeni (BCom Financial Accounting Student) accompanied by our very own Mr. NWU, who was named 2012 Mr. S.A Campus; Olivier Tshimbidi, they all did a stellar job.

The judges, who had their work cut-out for them, because of the abundance of talent and beauty that was there, were: Jeremy Mooi; whose works with all the NWU Vaal Web and Communication. Zano Sithetho, the Creative Director at Skorzch, also a head stylist for The Soil. As well as the lovely Maserame Mokhachane, 2012’s NWU Vaal 1st Princess.

Performances by fellow students; Cassie Bila,

belting out songs, she was even backed up by the audience. Some recited poems including Mandisa Ntsinde, ‘Just People’ performing acapellas and beat-boxing. If only we could get encore from the performers including the Vergelegen and Jasmyn residents and many others who shared their talents and entertained the audience.

The VIP included; Campus Residence Director Karin Venter, Student Affairs Director: Mr Jacob Simango, and House Parents from different residences. Later on, we were joined by YFM’s DJ Warras for the bash.

Striking moments of the pageant has to be; the slight tension between the judge’s decisions and what the audience anticipated, but was settled by Zano; explaining the criteria in which they judged according to. Also, the performances and talents that were shared, this was a night to remember. Not forgetting the spectacular setting they had, well-matched the Royal Bliss theme, hopefully other residences took notes.

Taking It On The Chin...

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a voice as “the sound produced in a person’s larynx and uttered through the mouth, as speech or song.” In other words, it is the vocal provision for singing or speaking. Fair enough. However, the truth is that it is much more than this. It is a platform for one to change the world through means of communicating ideas. It is a God given birth right for self-expression. It need not necessarily be vocal, and sometimes it might not even be verbal, but we all have one; and it sucks when it is not heard.

Although not all of us are blessed with a silver tongue, we would all like to feel that we can express our ideas and opinions well enough for the next person to understand whatever it is that we are trying to communicate to them. Be it in class, at work, at home with our families or in our relationships with our partners; nothing can be more frustrating to one than the feeling that you are not being heard. It is a spiritually draining experience that can influence one to lose their composure and act out of character; taking action that they might soon regret. Even though, it does sometimes feel as though it is worth it. Once the dust settles and we are left with the after math, we’re not always proud of the outcome.

A sad truth about life is that the people closest to us don’t always understand or hear us.

Women often complain about this of their men.

Although their frustration is sometimes justified, they fail to recognize that their masculine partners are not gifted receivers of hints or decipherers of coded language. While a lady might expect her man to know her well enough to be able to deduce and anticipate her needs; not all men understand that women communicate these needs in more languages than just the verbal ones. More often than not, the fairer sex communicates their ideas and emotions through either very subtle or intensely dramatic action. She could be as subtle as a change

in mood or behaviour; or expressive enough to pick a fight. This is not always well received by their partners, as they may interpret it as anything from their girlfriend being moody; to having been rejected by them or simply feeling somewhat disrespected by them; whereas she was only trying to let him know that she wasn’t happy.

The male sex is a little less complicated. Guys tend to either keep their frustrations to themselves or be bluntly expressive about them. A girl may not appreciate this of her man, but as long as he is a gentleman about it, she should be relieved when he behaves in the latter manner as it means he still cares enough to be truthful with her. If she can be supportive and understanding, then he will also be more receptive of her needs as he wants her to feel as though they are also being met, the same as his are.

Poets, painters, sculptors, musicians and other gifted artists have a talent for expressing themselves in a way that the world can not only interpret and understand their message, but they can also deliver an emotion through their art. The rest of us continuously make an effort for our voices to be heard and hope that we’re not misunderstood. We hope to make our mark on the world, or at least make a difference in somebody’s life. This can only be done if one does not supress their own voice.

May every man and woman find their voice and the valour to speak so that they are heard.

Remember that an idea is only as powerful as the mind that conceived it is determined to make it happen.

What happened to time...?

In the digital era we live in, we are losing hold of the few spaces that remain untouched by email, the internet, people, and other forms of distraction. Our cars now have mobile phone integration and a thousand satellite radio stations. When walking from one place to another, we have our devices streaming data from dozens of sources. Even at our bedside, we now have our iPads with heaps of digital apps and the world’s information at our fingertips.

There has been much discussion about the value of the “creative pause” – a state described as “the shift from being fully engaged in a creative activity to being passively engaged, or the shift to being disengaged altogether.” This phenomenon is the seed of the break-through “a-ha!” moments that people so frequently report having in the shower. In these moments, you are completely isolated, and your mind is able to wander and churn big questions without interruption.

However, despite the incredible power and potential of spaces, they are quickly becoming extinct. We are depriving ourselves of every opportunity for disconnection. And our imaginations suffer the consequences.

Why do we crave distraction over downtime?

Why do we give up our time space so easily?

Because space is scary. During these temporary voids of distraction, our minds return to the uncertainty and fears that plague all of us.

To escape this chasm of self-doubt and unanswered questions, you tune into all of the activity and data for reassurance. But this desperate need for constant connection and stimulation is not a modern problem. I would argue that we have always sought a state of constant connection from the dawn of time; it’s just never been possible until now. We are depriving ourselves of every opportunity for disconnection.

The need to be connected is, in fact, very basic in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the psychological theory that explains the largest and most fundamental human desires. Our need for a sense of belonging comes right after physical safety. We thrive on friendship, family, and the

constant affirmation of our existence and relevance. Our self-esteem is largely a product of our interactions with others. It is now possible to always feel loved and cared for, thanks to the efficiency of ours.

So what’s the solution? How do we reclaim our sacred spaces?

Soon enough, planes, trains, subways, and, yes, showers will offer the option of staying connected. Knowing that we cannot rely on spaces that force us to unplug to survive much longer, we must be proactive in creating these spaces for ourselves. And when we have a precious opportunity to NOT be connected, we should develop the capacity to use it and protect it.

Meditation and naps to clear the mind. There is no better mental escape from our tech-charged world than the act of meditation. If only for 15 minutes, the ability to steer your mind away from constant stimulation is downright liberating. There are various kinds of meditation.

Some forms require you to think about nothing and completely clear your mind. (This is quite hard, at least for me.) Other forms of meditation are about focusing on one specific thing – often your breath, or a mantra that you repeat in your head (or out loud) for 10-15 minutes.

At first, any sort of meditation will feel like a chore. But with practice, it will become an energizing exercise.

If you can’t adopt meditation, you might also try clearing your mind the old fashioned way – by sleeping. The legendary energy expert and bestselling author Tony Schwartz takes a 20-minute nap every day. Even if it’s a few hours before he presents to a packed audience, he’ll take a short nap. He was once asked how he overcomes the midday anxiety enough to nap. His trick? “Practice,” he said.

Like all skills that don’t come naturally, practice makes perfect.

Self-awareness and psychological investment.

Our most basic fears and desires, both conscious and subconscious, are soothed by connectivity and a constant flow of information. It is supremely important that we recognize the

power of our insecurities and, at the very least, acknowledge where our anxiety comes from.

Awareness is always the first step in solving any problem.

Protect the state of no-intent. When you’re rushing to a solution, your mind will jump to the easiest and most familiar path. But when you allow yourself to just look out the window for 10 minutes – and ponder – your brain will start working in a more creative way. It will grasp ideas from unexpected places. It’s this very sort of unconscious creativity that leads to great thinking. When you’re driving or showering, you’re letting your mind wander because you don’t have to focus on anything in particular. I have always had this weird interest in the supernatural. Even though it scares me to death (no pun intended) I have never really thought that one day I might stare this alter-reality in the face.

Kempton Hospital (formerly known as Khayalami hospital) closed down 16 years ago, allegedly, due to a shortage of staff. Others mention transformation plans and as suggested by the Department of Health and Safety due to an inappropriate location. The hospital, one of Gauteng’s best back in the day, housed 400 staff members and 1000 patient beds closed down on December 26th 1996, unexpectedly.

At this stadium of closure, there were only 14 beds open, two temporary doctors and a few nurses on duty. It is as if they, on that day, put down their scalpels and walked out leaving behind open registers, patient reports, medicine and medical equipment. Till this day, files lay strewn on the floor and an estimated R10 million of equipment sealed behind creaking doors. The government nonchalantly whips out up to R700 000 a year on security fees and R1 million rand in taxes to keep it standing.

With each year the cost of reopening increases. Why? What are they hiding? Why haven’t they broken it down yet? Why spend so much

on security if they aren’t using it? Why leave the unused equipment and not distribute it to those who can use it? So many questions, yet so little answers. Rumours of the hospital reopening are making rounds. But will the government really spend R270 million on reopening a 1000 bed sickbay for only 217 beds?

Standing infront of the mesh-gate my heart raced wildly. We couldn’t really see the hospital, and so up to this point the full effect hadn’t sunk in yet. Each of us gave R50 bribe to enter and the guard helpfully led us up the long driveway to the 28 level buildings. As we approached the building we could feel the air getting colder. The surroundings were eerie and the once warm air was chilled. As we stood at

the back entrance of the hospital we could hear a faint whooooo sound. Apparently South-Africa has birds that make a whooo sound. Total darkness consumed us as we entered. Right infront of us a dilapidated wheelchair stood, facing us, as if waiting to welcome the ever so freaked out visitors. The inside of the building revealed exactly what would be expected.

Worn out walls smothered us and the unknown greeted us with every step. It was only on the 3rd floor that most of us felt our hearts racing and experienced difficulty breathing. The 9 of us headed through the halls like bulls in a China shop. There were a few incidents were we could hear some freaky things and see some unexplainable shadows. One of our friends said she saw a little girl peeking from behind a wall and even called her mommy, another felt like they were witnessing, though emotions, a full on pregnancy in the paediatric ward and saw a boy running in the grass. Another felt nausea upon our exit and only when we were safely in the car did it go away. Four of us waited impatiently in the car as the other 5 in the group went to explore some more. They too experienced a few close encounters with Casper the friendly “oh-it’s-just-another-group” ghost.

The eerie sounds and flashlight shadows we saw didn’t freak us out as much as what we found upon our return home. Pictures revealed orbs (luckily white), a man with a hat and a freaky devil face baring red teeth. Our video camera also recorded something unexplainable, a man whistling, someone calling out the name Jacques, a man speaking in a differently language and a little girl saying hello…

ICC Champions Trophy 2013 Cricket comes home The ICC (International Cricket Council) Champions Trophy will hit our television screens in June 2013, as one of premier international tournament are hosted in England – the proverbial home of cricket.

The 2013 ICC Champions Trophy will attract the top 8 cricketing nations in the world, with each nation setting their eyes firmly on the prize at stake.

The nations that will be competing are hosts, England, defending champions Australia and favorites South Africa. The other teams include World Cup winners India, and runners-up Sri Lanka as well as the dark horses, Pakistan, West Indies and New Zealand.

in Bangladesh in October 1998, and was seen as a “mini World Cup”. South Africa won the inaugural event but has since struggled in the editions following their triumph.

The previous tournament was held in 2009 in South Africa, but the Proteas failed miserably and failed to reach the knockout stages of the tournament. It will be interesting to see if outgoing coach Gary Kirsten and his squad of 15 players can rectify previous disappointments in major tournaments.

South Africa is drawn in Group B, with the West Indies, India and Pakistan. Group A consists of Australia, England, Sri Lanka and New Zealand. Each team will play one match against the teams in their group. The top two teams from Group A will then play against the top two teams from Group B in the semi finals respectively.

South Africa’s first match is against India on 6 June, which promises to be a titanic encounter. Proteas batsman, Hashim Amla believes that South Africa has the capabilities to win the tournament. “We want to send Gary off with a smile and fond memories of the team. It will be great for him to have an expression of the value he has given to us. It’s important for us to win,” said Amla at a press conference on the eve of the tournament.

The final will be played on Sunday 23 June 2013 at the Oval in London. This tournament promises to an exciting and intriguing tournament and will serve as a prelude to the ICC World Cup which will be hosted in 2015.

NWU Vaal Rugby makes inconsistent start to the season Wouter Pienaar

The NWU Vaal Rugby Club has experienced mixed results in the Valke League this season, as their respective teams have either won or lost by a large margin.

The NWU Vaal Rugby Club played against Boksburg on Saturday 1 June with the 1st team losing 44-31 in a closely fought battle. The 2nd team and 3rd teams also suffered the same fate when they drew the short straw in 35-14 and 19-44 point defeats respectively.

On a positive note, the young guns of the under 21’s and under 19’s showed great composure by winning both their matches. The under 21’s won 32-3 and the under 19’s made a mockery of their opposition in an 86-0 demolition. The

match was even called off early in the second half as the “contest” was stopped at the referee’s discretion.

The previous weekend NWU Vaal played Springs, at the NWU Vaal rugby fields. The home ground advantage did not favour the NWU Vaal 1st team as they lost a close game by 28 points to 33. The 2nd and 3rd teams had better fortunes as they won their matches with accomplished team performances. The 2nd team won 24-14, while the 3 rd. Team chalked out a 21-12 victory.

The NWU Vaal Rugby Club will play their next round of matches at home against Kempton Park Rugby Club on 8 June 2013.

Faranani sends Longfellow packing Mangaliso Maduna

Longfellow suffered yet another setback in their campaign after they crashed out of the interres competition in the last games of the group stages against their bitter rivals Faranani .

The iconic rivalry was yet again rekindled in a spectacular showdown. It was their first ever meeting since Faranani triumphed over them in last year‘s final. It was a do or die game for Longfellow as they had nothing less than revenge in their minds. They have become Faranani‘s daily bread for far too long now and were looking to turn the tables around this time.

The first opening minutes lacked the intensity as both teams failed to pose any threat from either side. It was due to their persistent bad passing and poor decision-making in front of the final third of the pitch that made the game monotonous . The game started to heat up after the hour mark when Longfellow curled in a cross and forced the keeper out of his comfort zone. Fortunately, he produced a world class save. He literally kept Faranani alive with his reflexes. Despite their efforts they just couldn’t beat Faranani shot stopper Macduff Macha-

The first goal of the match would arrive in the dying minutes of the first half courtesy of Tokelo Tshotetsi after he combined well with Ntobeko Manyama. Longfellow then responded quickly with few shots on target. Faranani ‘s defence was now under pressure and they used aggressive tactics which led to the booking of their captain Joseph Mantlhon for a twolegged tackle. The game went into half time with Faranani in the driving seat.

With the second half resuming Faranani coach made some crucial changes to his line up and brought in a striker to strengthen his manpower in front of goal. As expected Faranani started on a high note with Ntobeko unleashing an immaculate shot but failed to reach the target and went comfortably in the hands of the keeper.

One could sense that there was some sense of self- belief and unity in the team, something that was lacking in the first half. Longfellow supporters then expressed their frustrations at the coach and demanded tactical changes to made because Faranani were having a field

The Conductors After a disastrous 2011/2012 campaign, in which Amakhosi finished without a single trophy, a feat which is not accustomed with South Africa’s cup specialists, Kaizer Chiefs hierarchy knew changes had to be made. Then coach Serbian born Vladimir Vermezovic was shown the door before the season reached its close.

While arch enemies Orlando Pirates won their second treble in two seasons, the Chiefs management started their search for a candidate with experience across all levels, development, national, club, South Africa and abroad. Stuart Baxter was the chosen one to lead the Naturena based side back to the glory days.

He slowly rebuild the confidence of the players and tactically improved the teams overall play.

Watching Kaizer Chiefs players walk out the tunnel under Coach Baxter one could sense a rejuvenated and high team spirit, which surely the Briton born mentor had instilled and thus contributed to the instant success the club achieved.

Alongside the former Bafana Bafana coach, was former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend Doctor ‘16V’ Khumalo. He was tasked in assisting coach Baxter and did a splendid job, not only was he the assistant coach but an inspiration to the players as many of them watched him as boys when strutted his magic on football field during his heydays. A known motivator he is a figure that epitomizes a legacy many of the current squad would like to emulate.

The Acquisitions There is no doubt Amakhosi bought well during the off-season, master of creativity in midfield Siyabonga Nkosi made a comeback to the club after his previous stint in the 2006/2007 season. Bafana Bafana trio of Morgan Gould, Siboniso Gaxa and Tshepo Masilela were added to strengthen the defense and add their experience to the Amakhosi backline. reference to the famous wall of Gibraltar. Up front Kingston Nkatha was signed from now relegated Black Leopards amid much criticism.

Nhlanhla Khuzwayo, Kgotso Moleko, Sakhile Hlongwa, Matthew Rusike and Nicholas Mynhardt were all added to increase the depth of the squad.

The Structure The Amakhosi technical team tactics were spot on throughout the season with great decisions at the right time. An example would be the first league encounter against Amazulu where Chiefs came out 6-0 winners. Chiefs had tactical pillars in every position; in goals club captain Itumeleng Khune was instrumental on numerous occasions even deciding the team’s fate.

In defense Tefu Mashamaite was solid as a rock and thus made the job easier for newcomers Gould and Mathoho to settle in and lead Chiefs to the best defensive record in the league, a contribution many soccer coaches will tell you is pivotal to a team’s success. The midfield pairing of Reneliwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane and Willard Katsande worked like welloiled machine with Siphiwe Tshabalala and George Lebese running amok on the flanks coupled by Siyabonga’s creativity in midfield.

The strikers were on song the whole season; Bernard Parker was clinical as ever a reminiscent of his years at now defunct Benoni Premier United he finished as the clubs top goal scorer and created 12 assists for his fellow teammates. He also ended the season on a high by scoring the deciding goal in the Nedbank cup final against Supersport United. Fellow strikers Kingston Nkatha, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Kaizer Motaung Junior were always on point when called upon service.

Amakhosi captain’s season, Itumeleng Khune was in the league of his own. He rediscovered his form which had waned a bit. When he was selected as the club captain towards the end of last season many felt he was not quite ready to lead such a huge institution as Kaizer Chiefs.

Many looked at his temperament as his downfall but those who know him would tell you it’s his way of showing his passion for the game.

Fast forward to May 2013 and there he was holding aloft the Absa Premiership trophy. A friend joked and said he should take the trophy home with him as his performances were out of this world.

He marshaled the team from the back with awesome saves throughout the season and the best ball distribution in the league. His performances drew praises from his coach Stuart Baxter at one time being quoted as saying “Itu Khune is the best goalkeeper in Africa”.

Not only did his performances please the Kaizer Chiefs family but made the whole South African football fraternity stand up and applaud his magnificent displays, that national team coach Gordon Igesund has recently named him Bafana Bafana’s permanent captain. When my friend earlier said Itu Khune deserved the Absa Premiership trophy, little did he know he would walk deservedly away with the Absa Premierships goalkeeper of the season, player’s player of the season, Nedbank cup player of the tournament and Footballer of the season.
