Site Analysis

Spatial Concept Precedent —— Klein Bottle

Year

2017 Semester 2

Place

Studley Park Boathouse, Kew VIC

Project Master

Redesign a boathouse for public and commercial use by using a master's architectural language Tadao Ando

Purely geometric form, Conflicts Ando's between physical entities (walls) Language to create the convergence of sapce and influence people's movement Site

The site is in the valley. Thus, the site is not open and views are blocked by the surroundings.

Concept

T o c r e a t e a p l a c e t o h e l p people enhance their experience and communication with architecture and nature by a spiral loop circulation.

Programs Used

Rhino, V-ray, AutoCAD, Photoshop

Design Process

Ground F

Circulation Diagram A spiral loop circulation reduces the space occupied by circulation and also reduces the destruction to this historic place and natural elements. Besides, the spiral loop circulation elongates the journey and create spatial interest for visitors. The loop obscure the definition of entrance and exit. Under the guidance of walls , people will not get lost in the loop.

3

An invasive wall introduces the space attached to it to other space, which creates dramatic intersection. Similar to the Klein bottle, it is a conflict between forms or physical entities. But it is exactly the convergence or connection even fusion paces.

Floor Plan

First Floor Plan The building has two entrances which connect to two existing pathways so that visitors on two pathways can enter the loop circulation imperceptibly. A ramp with a wall introduces a space to the cuboid space and a curved ramp fitting in the topography leads people to ground floor. A corridor connects the restaurant to main part. CafĂŠ, Restaurant, Kiosk are public

space which need more open space. People in two-story CafĂŠ and Restaurant can enjoy the beautiful views. People who want to row boat pass through hire counter and get boats. They can depart from Boat House. Toilet is only for staffs. So toilet and office are designed in an independent and secret zone. The courtyard is a transition zone between toilet and office, interior and exterior.

From Ando’s perspective, concrete forms a surface which is homogeneous and light. The surface becomes abstract. It is transformed into nothing. The existence of the wall as a substance disappears. The only thing which remains for one’s perception is the delineation of space. People can remember the building easily. And large area of glass allows daylight come in. people will not have depressive feeling in the room.

Project

D evelop design proposals for a new community estate and pleasure garden in Melbourne.

Figure Ground

The precedent is plant cells which have polygonal cell walls and are well-arranged. Water molecules, air, light, mineral ions, carbon dioxide and so on are transferred in the gaps between cells and penetrate through cell walls.

Figure Ground

consists of many unbroken polygons. I highlight some borders of every polygon to enclose a space. Also, these highlighted borders and their extension in one polygon can cooperate with other adjacent polygons to enclose larger space. In that way, I can get any shape and area and any relationships between functional zooms., which is flexible.

Concept

M aking rooms more flexible and improving people’s experience

Floor Plan & Diagrams of Movable Walls 01 of 02

To buildings, functional rooms and spaces, permeation means the extension of one space to the other so as to form a new space and they can interact with each other to meet different demands, expand functions, affect the distribution of visitors. I design my buildings with movable walls, sliding walls and doors in both public and private rooms. When these doors and walls are closed, they are many individual rooms. But when they are open or moved, rooms can be reorganized and enlarged to get different areas. In public pavilions, sliding walls divide a large space into many small, relatively private rooms for small gathering. Once bigger events need larger space, open the sliding doors and connect to adjacent rooms so that space and functions can permeate from one to the other, visitor can penetrate through the “cell walls.

To people, Permeation means a way or a process in which people access to the site and cognize, explore the site and enjoy the journey. According to the definition, permeation works through diffusion. the permeant will move from high concentration to low concentration across the interface. People penetrate the interface of buildings and street from four entrances. And people will be gathered again in the middle of the site. People complete their permeation from street to site. And then, with the guidance of pathways and ramps at different levels, they will be transported to their own rooms or open deck.

2017 Summer Holiday S e l f - s t u d y i n g Rhinoceros & V-ray for Rhino to render digital models. Learn to use Rhino to build relatively complex surfaces. Also, change the visual effects of all kinds of materials by modify parameters and variables to make model more realistic.

I measured all dimensions of my watch and built a digital model in Rhino. By using Vray, the digital model was rendered and looks realistic.
