Reflection: In the process of design, I agree with “Less is more�. Everything that exists must have its design meaning. I like everything about design and art, and I have a strong interest in it. I am a slowtempered designer, always making ideas at the last minute. All the works of this semester, my inspiration is from the steamline, and trying to soften all the corners.

My computer skills has improved a lot this semester. At the beginning, I can only extrude simple geometry in rhino, and now I can use the grasshopper parameterization to manipulate

relatively complex geometries. In addition, I also learned to use UE4 to simple rendering models, and also learned to write a material ball of luminescent that will breathe. During this period, I experienced a long and difficult process, painful but happy for my achived. And I need thanks for all the teachers and classmates who patiently teached me before.

M1 Radix Pavillon Isometric of precedent

Radix’s design is simple and elegant. It only removes three spheres in a rectangular box, thus creating a semi-public, semi-private space that is well integrated with the surrounding environment, making full use of the river’s steps and water reflections. Created an interaction between Pavillon and the environment. At the same time, there is a deep philosophical meaning behind this design, in order to explore the relationship between time and the memory. Revelation we not only focus on the design appearance and function in the design but also pay attention to the deep philosophical value behind the design.

Ground Condition

The three arched spaces divide the pavilion into three separate but coherent parts. The light green vertical surface represents the interface between the inner and outer spaces of the building in a narrow sense, but the shadow is also a factor that affects the threshold when people stands. In the shadow next to the building, that area can belong to both the building itself and the external environment. This area acts as a bridge between the interior and exterior.

At the same time, the steps are also a important threshold element for achieving a very effective link between architecture and the environment.

Task A Matrix Because I tried a lot of surface structure which has three or four vertices to touch the ground, the stability is not good enough or surfaces not looked beautiful enough, so I explored the structure of 6 points touching the ground. The surfaces as a whole has a tendency to tilt toward a direction, which seems to be dynamic. The two surfaces are almost closed, opening only at the top, allowing light to come in. Projected inside to provide a unique visual experience.

The left shorter side is weaker, so it is applicated 2d patterns, the right higher side is stronger, so it is applicated 3d, the grids has formed a large to small gradient after multi curve attraction, and the height of the pattern is also formed by adjusting the offset point, which gradient from large to small.

This angle is a good view present the uniqueness of my waffle structure, and the streamlined structure is clearly presented. It is also clearer and easier to read by adjusted of the lineweight.

Task 1 Surface and Waffle

I try to increase the space at the bottom of the waffle structure as much as possible, enhancing the stability while providing more area for the light to pass through the hollowed out panel, allowing the shadow to be projected on the ground.

The 3d surface uses 3 different patterns, dividing the 5x5 grid into 9 rows diagonally, so each pattern occupying 3 rows, forming a harmonious and consistent gradient effect.

Finally, I use the Offset Curve and Trim to hollow out the surface of the quadrangular pyramid to create an interesting shadow effect.

The 2d surface also uses 3 kinds of patterns.

The distribution is used in pairs with the 3d face. Otherwise, the 2d pattern has a larger hollow area, so that light can be projected through the hole on the ground, creating a very beautiful fantasy shadow.

Adding a Z-fin at the bottom is used as a base to reinforce the X and Y fins, because some of the XYfins near the bottom are very thin and easily broken, so I have hardened them.

Compared to a messy and sharp model like a hedgehog, I prefer a model that looks simple and elegant and refined. I used a simple triangular pyramid and its combination to make my model look harmonious, with smooth transitions and gradients. Also, 2D follows the same elements, using the same language, which is the hollow of the top view of the triangular pyramid. The entire model looks complex and varied, also has a strong internal connection.

Task 1 Laser Cut

Because the model size is small. When creating complex patterns, it is very difficult to fold and stick by hand.

After thinking and research, I found that when the height of the pattern is lowered, the manual difficulty will be reduced. At the same time, by adjusting the grid by curve attraction, my minimum model unit is still longer than 3cm. By making as many early thinking and pre-plans as possible, the manual difficulty is reduced, and the final physical model is guaranteed to be neat and clean. In addition, the use of dashed lines to cut the edges that need to be folded can improve the appearance while facilitating folding, but the length and spacing of the dashed lines set in rhino cannot be accurately recognized by the laser cut machine, and additional notes are required for the staff. Achieve the desired effect.

Task B Matrix Klein Surface is a very unique and interesting shape which can be cut as a pattern. Adjust the position of the pattern by using Curve Attraction and Point Attraction in combination.

The shape of the cut geometry is very interesting and can be used as a space for children to climb and play.

A darker space is created, and the shadows produced by the irregular shapes will also be very interesting.

This part of the space gave me inspiration to use the unique curve cut by this assembly to creative the space.

This part of the area can be used as a semi-open space where people can walk through, or for a short stay and conversation.

Using a clipping panel cube as a tool, therefore, I can see the shape of the small square after cutting, and move the position where I want to cut. The model was chosen because it looks great no matter any way it is placed. The shape of the arch is very interesting and elegent. As an entrance, it is also a tearhhold, which plays an excessive role in connecting the internal and external environment and also creates a very interesting shadow.

Dream Ripple Pavillon

Using Ripple as the design element, I am committed to creating a dreamy space experience.

Povillon is designed to resemble a square, maximizing the use of 5x5m of space, providing better shelter to special weather. In addition, the bench and pavilion are integrated into one, and the audience can sit on the bench, and watching the show, meanwhile, the side wall is hollowed out to ensure enough daylight inside the pavilion. At night, povillon will illuminate, and the color of the light can be adjusted according to the needs of the show and change with the melody.

The terrain transitions from far to near from flat to the center of the waves, pushing people to walk along the ripples and wrap around the pavillon to enjoy the lighting effects.

The material chosen is white perspex because of its good light transmission and smooth reflective surface.

Isometric M3 The parametric bench is also a corrugated style design. Which is primary circulation space, provide a space to rest and a chance for communication.

The entire povillon design uses ripples as design elements, corrugated roofs, corrugated walls, corrugated benches, and then joined together by Boolean union

As the main component of pavilion, the semi-open space is the most important threshold and the most dense space for circulation. Used to deal with different usage situations: as a space for speaker and listeners to shelter from rain and sunshine; as a space for children to play; as a place for rest and communication, etc.

Computational Process M3

I use wave as my design elements. And I also learn the technical on the internet for build parametric walls and parametric benches to achieve the application of streamlines and ripples on each part of the pavilion.

I explored four ways to parameterize equidistant planes and applied them flexibly to create wave roofs, wave walls and wave benches, respectivly . and then combine them with boolean unions.

Each face is completely different, but contains the same design elements.

I am most proud of the part of the breathing light + edge-emitting material ball. I looked a lot video on the Internet about how to make a emissive material and combined with some formulas in the existing materials provided in the workshop.

Fabrication Process M3

The 3D model was created using a laser cut method. In order to make the material of the model the same as the Pavillon real material, the performance of the material can be seen more intuitively. However, this material is difficult to bond with ordinary uhu Glue, making the model sticking process very difficult and time-consuming, and easily displaced and damaged by vibration.
