DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Neuroscientists have agreed that we begin to lose our ability to imagine in Middle School. Research reinforces that social and emotional learning (SEL) requires a “must do and not just witness” attitude in order to truly empathize. Education in the 21st century mandates that students must learn to answer a probing question and create an authentic solution that is ultimately presented. And so we ask, “Why do we do a musical in 8th grade?” The answer is clear. By asking the probing question, ”How do we put on a musical?” We create a solution by using personal responsibility and cooperative collaboration and interpretation to create an original, authentic presentation: our performance for you. This is a true project-based learning opportunity.
By preparing for a musical, through the rehearsal process, we stretch the imagination and encourage it to grow. We can step into another person ’ s shoes and empathize with their feelings. We create characters that take us beyond ourselves and help us learn to understand perspective The theme in The Little Mermaid, Jr is that we need to love our own special qualities, embrace our differences, and appreciate each other. Ariel wishes to be something more than what she is. She yearns for something different. When she sacrifices something of value, she fights fiercely to explore all of her other gifts. She is able to lean on her friends and family to support her and then she grows .These values of caring for self and others are truly Sacred Heart.
This Class of 2030 has learned how to imagine, create, analyze, problem-solve, grow in individual responsibility, and care for and be responsible to a group. These are key leadership abilities for now and in the future stages of life. We hope that all of the girls will have a greater appreciation for theater, music, and the arts through this experience. They are proud of their hard work and so are we.
