UNMC Computer Based circulation Testing Center Task Forceeducation graphics

Tim Doughty from the Kansas City Medical Center provided a interlibrary loan/photocopy presentation to the Task Force on April 22. He shared valuable information regarding the testing center provided at the reference KUMC with emphasis on lessons learned and what to consider when creating a testing center on campus.

On May 13, Marie Reidelbach, Mary Helms, and Kim Laursen traveled to the KUMC to actually observe a test being administered to a Nursing class. It was a valuable experience to actually see how the testing rooms are set-up physically as well as how tests are administered online.

June 4, the Testing Center Task Force met to brainstorm ideas regarding the testing center with emphasis on a single workstation. The meeting brought forth several good ideas.

5833 miles BTOP Project Completed on June 30 Teri Hartman 2013

Spring 2013 2 librarians conducted training sessions and/or visited 12 BTOP Nebraska public libraries, driving a total of 1114 miles

BTOP poster with Spanish websites: There are two posters – one English, one Spanish - created for the BTOP program that fit table-top stands delivered to libraries that requested training. The posters can be downloaded and printed on regular color printers for placement near workstations or on bulletin boards, too. The Spanish version includes urls for MedlinePlus, Kidshealth, NIH SeniorHealth, Mayo Clinic, and the National Cancer Institute. Posters can be downloaded from the Training tab on the CHIRS page: http://unmc.libguides.com/ chirs. The photo shows one poster stand at the North Bend Public Library.

Cindy Schmidt Presents

“Advanced Google Searching Techniques” In-service In June, Cindy Schmidt offered an in-service training session focused on the lessons learned during the “Advanced Google Power Searching” course that she completed in February. Two more in-service training sessions are planned for the summer. One will focus on Clinical Key and the other on the reference interview.

Teri Hartman reports on SMDEP and SURP Teri Hartman conducted classes on locating the evidence for 80 SMDEP (Summer Medical and Dental Education Program) students and their TAs, and 85 SURP (Summer Undergraduate Research Program) students.

Good-bye Kassandra After two years working evenings with the Circulation Department, Kassandra Montag has been given the privilege to spend ten months in the Netherlands. Her husband, Andrew, a third year medical student at UNMC, won a grant to study at the university in Utrecht to get a one-year master’s degree in medical ethics. While they are abroad, Kassandra, who received an MA in Literature with a focus in Creative Writing/Poetry from Creighton, will continue her studies independently. She will use the university resources, their library, and nearby art museums, to do independent research into ekphrastic poetry (poems about art). At the end of the year, Kassandra and Andrew will return to Nebraska so Andrew can finish his fourth year of medical school.

Reference Establishes a Systematic Review Search Service The Reference Department since establishing its systematic review search service, http://unmc.libguides.com/ systematicreview is involved in 11 systematic review searches. Standards for systematic reviews established by the Institute of Medicine recommend the team conducting the review include a librarian. Systematic review searches differ from other searches done by reference librarians in that they are exhaustive, comprehensive; include multiple databases, and the grey literature. The systematic review process is time consuming for both the reviewer and the librarian with the process from initiation to publication taking 6 to 12 months.

User Services Faculty Attended Annual Meetings Heather Brown and Cindy Schmidt attended ACRL 2013 held on April 10 – 13 in Indianapolis, IN. The meeting provided over 300 sessions as well as three keynote speakers. Heather, who received a Professional Development Award from the RML to attend the meeting, shared her experiences at the conference in a webinar.

Heather Brown attended the annual meeting of Medical Library Association held in Boston, MA on May 3- 8. The theme for this year was “One Health: Information in an Independent World”. Heather was among the 2012 - 2013 cohorts of MLA Rising Stars. She was invited to MLA Board meeting where she presented her project report with Chapter Council and displayed a poster of her project in the registration area.

Alissa Fial presented on her experiences at the E-Science Workshop in March for the RML in a webinar, “Catch the Highlights” - Professional Development Award Winners Sharing Back. She also participated in the two-day, online MOOC Focus group session: Learning and the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), organized through the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative. Teri Hartman, Roxanne Cox, and Marie Reidelbach attended the group sessions as well.

Marie Reidelbach attended the annual meeting the College and University of the Nebraska Library Association on May 10. The meeting was held on the Bellevue University campus. A highlight of the meeting was hearing about the Learning Commons on the UNK campus.

Alissa Fial has been learning a lot about MOOC’s as she has completed or is working on several during this past quarter. She received a certificate of completion in the MOOC: “Internet History, Technology and Security” offered through the University of Michigan; began participation in the “Introduction to Psychology” offered through the University of Toronto and “Interprofessional Healthcare Informatics” offered through the University of Minnesota.

Flipped Classes – A New Way to Teach Our Students Roxanne Cox implemented a flipped classroom approach for the PA class this summer. An online tutorial was distributed to the students prior to the class. Roxanne then came to a session where students worked on their searches. All 48 students submitted their final search strategies to Roxanne whereby she critiqued their searches. The overall goal at the completion of the course is to provide a study that could be accepted for publication in a core journal relevant to their field. Students who were having problems with their searches were encouraged to contact Roxanne for a follow-up consultation. At the time of writing the quarterly report, 22 out of 48 had met with Roxanne.

Heather Brown has drawn together Alissa Fial, Teri Hartman, and Marie Reidelbach to develop a series of modules on searching PubMed. The modules will include recorded videos, quizzes, print handouts, and an online tutorial. Estimated completion is October.

Heather and Alissa were asked by Dr. Dele Davies to join the eLearning Task Force. This group is focusing on creating modules within the curriculum to provide a more interactive type of instruction. More information about this committee will be forthcoming in the months ahead.
