TO T H E S T. T E R E S A’ S AC A D E M Y C O M M U N I T Y, this simple yet powerful school motto brings comfort and strength. Inspired by Saint Teresa of Avila, for whom our school is named, this phrase is inscribed on the school crest and is found in places, both prominent and inconspicuous, across campus. It is a constant reminder to students, parents, faculty, staff, alumnae and friends to boldly pursue our mission of serving the dear neighbor without distinction, and to strive to change the world through Catholic values.

AT ST. TERESA’S ACADEMY, WE ARE BLESSED to have a special mission of educating, encouraging and empowering young women. The aweinspiring history of our founding Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet tells a rich and beautiful story defined by determination, perseverance and resilience.

These shared qualities and the knowledge that God is always with us gives us the strength to boldly and courageously pursue ever greater heights.

As the CSJ sisters did in the past and continue to do, we must always trust in God and strive to fulfill our core belief in a mission of love and unity. The STA community does not take this lightly. We aspire to deliver on this every day.

Through the generosity of alumnae and friends with their time and treasure, the involvement of students in daily activities, the unending commitment of faculty and staff, and the steadfast dedication of parents and guardians, we have come together to accomplish this time and again.

This publication is a testament to your work and achievements. Throughout, you will be reminded of the Academy’s enduring motto: Deo Adjuvante Non Timendum — “With the help of God, we need not fear.” This powerful phrase guides us every day and inspires us to abide in God’s word and continue onward.

Unshakeable F A I T H Boundless C O U R A G E Endless C O M P A S S I O N FA I T H I S T H E C O R N E RS TO N E upon which STA was founded, and it continues to guide us in ways large and small. Across campus, faith is ever-present, providing the strength and wisdom gained through a close connection with God and each other.

From our student body of more than 600 young women to the faculty and staff who lead, influence and guide them, STA strives to enhance our faith, instill in us the courage to boldly pursue challenging paths, and have the compassion to lift those in need and care for the world around us.

Connecting Through M I N I S T RY T H E C A M P US M I N I S T RY D E PA RT M E N T, often a hub for student gatherings and discussions of faith, implemented an official internship program for students in the 2021-2022 academic year. Four student interns—all seniors—spend four hours per week each to support a variety of spiritual needs on campus. These include producing daily prayer videos, writing prayers for Masses, and helping plan student retreats. This experience provides an opportunity for learning as well as service hours, and more fully integrates students into the Campus Ministry team.

Uniting With P R A Y E R DAILY PRAYER VIDEO

SHARING OF THE HEART

As a school grounded in faith, a mainstay at STA is the daily prayer.

Leading up to the spring of 2020, daily prayers were delivered to the campus community over the school’s PA system. Once classes moved to remote learning as a result of COVID-19, STA administration continued to offer voluntary daily prayers in a prerecorded audio format.

Inspired by our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, and our mission to love the dear neighbor without distinction, STA encourages the “Sharing of the Heart” practice among students, faculty and staff.

During the 2020 Lenten season, STA conducted the Stations of the Resurrection through livestream, creating a real-time, engaging experience for the community. This video-based format was well received by the student body and was the impetus for the daily prayer video.

Today, the daily prayer videos—typically two minutes or less in duration—are created, written and produced by students. The videos, which often contain music or student-read passages, are played during the first class period of the school day. STA students of all faiths are invited to contribute to the videos to encourage a broad range of understanding of different faith practices and prayers.

From their beginnings in LePuy-en-Velay, France, the CSJ sisters sought opportunities to meet the needs of their communities. They worked throughout the day to serve the dear neighbor, gathering afterward to discuss their experiences and feelings, and consider how God’s grace moved them as individuals and as a group. This “sharing of the heart” led the women deeper into their community, their mission, and into the mystery of God in their lives.

STA continues this tradition by encouraging students to share with each other, through thought-provoking reflections, the state of their hearts. Typically occurring during student advisory time, this creates a common bond among classmates, and promotes deeper and more expansive thinking about prayer so students can rely on their spirituality beyond the walls of STA and into adulthood.

Leading With F A I T H TO S T R E N G T H E N the understanding and embracing of Catholicism by those who teach, influence and guide students, STA recently implemented a campus-wide Faith Formation program.

This program, made possible by a gift from alumna Carol (Shaugnessy, ‘53) Miller and her son and daughter-in-law Sean and Karen Miller, focuses on integrating newly hired employees into STA’s Catholic faith community.

The new-hire component spans the first three years of an individual’s employment at STA. It includes Sharing of the Heart practices, instruction on the CSJ charisms and approach to interpreting the Bible, and other faith-based components. The first year of the program consists of structured monthly meetings, while years two and three consist of quarterly meetings, with programming based on individual interests and passions.

Another aspect of advancing faith on campus includes adding Campus Ministry to the faculty and staff interview process. The purpose is to ensure an individual, regardless of position, desires to lead with Catholic values and understands the purpose of faith and prayer at STA. Additionally, the program supports professional development initiatives centered around Catholicity and spirituality including presentations from CSJ sisters and Faith Formation luncheons.

CSJ ASSOCIATES are lay individuals, primarily Catholic, who seek a deeper relationship with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. CSJA candidates participate in a formal orientation process which generally takes place over a one-year period of time where they learn about CSJ identity, history and charism. Associates share in the faith community, ministry, prayer and celebrations of the sisters.

Associates are challenged to deepen their spiritual lives while continuing with their daily lives as spouses, parents, professionals, caregivers and retirees. They are encouraged to become involved in ministry with CSJs to love and serve the dear neighbor without distinction in a variety of ways, which include: prison ministry, healthcare, serving as mentors for adolescents, serving those in homeless shelters, caring for the elderly and more.

STA Alumna Kathy Polsinelli To Kathy (Triplett, ‘64) Polsinelli, her STA friends were her dearest. When Kathy passed away from cancer in 2020 at the age of 75, her husband Jim asked that any gifts be made in her honor to STA. Kathy’s friends were quick to start a fundraising initiative toward a scholarship in her name.

Kathy and Jim were lifelong supporters of Catholic education, serving on boards, leading fundraisers, and volunteering for and donating to their childrens’ schools. Upon hearing of the effort to establish a scholarship in

Kathy’s memory and understanding her fondness for all STA brought to her life, Jim quickly upped the ante, generously promising to match every gift dollar for dollar.

The gifts made in Kathy’s honor, coupled with Jim’s match, quickly reached the threshold to establish an endowed scholarship. STA thanks Jim and all of the generous donors who have ensured a lasting legacy for Kathy.

A legacy of Education SHIRLEY A. RENAUD SCHOLARSHIP

Shirley Renaud was a legend to many in Catholic education, teaching generations of students in the Kansas City area at St. Peter’s Catholic School and St. Teresa’s Academy.

Shirley’s dedication to teaching resulted in her educating thousands of students over her career.

She retired from teaching in 1998.

Although Shirley was not an STA alumna—she graduated from Lincoln High School at the age of 14—she had a special place in her heart for STA. In addition to her teaching, her three daughters all graduated from STA, as did her granddaughter Nichelle Renaud (‘95).

After her death in January 2021, her daughters and their families endowed the Shirley A. Renaud Scholarship in her memory. This scholarship provides financial assistance to one Black student at STA during all four of her years at the Academy.

SANDY BROSNAHAN (‘56)

In 2020, Sandy Brosnahan (‘56) became reacquainted with her alma mater through STA’s “Love the Dear Alumna” program. This initiative involved nearly 100 current students who wrote personal notes to alumnae about life at STA.

Over the years, Sandy has been a generous supporter of the Academy Fund. To express her gratitude for the outreach and her love of STA, Sandy has chosen to include STA in her estate plan through the Teresa of Avila Society, leaving a lasting impact.

ROSE DILLON (‘05) - Project manager at The Chemours Company Rose Dillon is a chemical engineer by training and a project manager by trade.

She currently works at The Chemours Company, which makes several chemical products that are in consumer items like Teflon and Freon. She is an active member of several neighborhood organizing groups, spending time knocking on neighbors’ doors (or, during COVID, mailing postcards and making phone calls) to promote voter engagement. She lives in Philadelphia with her wife and more animals than are strictly necessary.

Juana Summers (‘06) - Political reporter for NPR covering demographics and culture Juana Summers is a political reporter for NPR, covering demographics and culture. She has reported on politics since 2010 for publications including Politico, CNN and The Associated Press. She got her start in public radio at KBIA in Columbia, Missouri, and also previously covered Congress for NPR. She appears regularly on television and radio outlets to discuss national politics. In 2016, Summers was a fellow at Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service.

JoEllen Redlingshafer (‘09) - Television comedy writer

JoEllen Redlingshafter is a television comedy writer, most recently for Awkwafina is Nora from Queens (Comedy Central/HBO Max), and Doogie Kamealoha, MD (Disney Plus). Her writing break came with the critically acclaimed Season 3 premiere episode of Big Mouth (Netflix). JoEllen has been a close collaborator of comedians John Mulaney and Nick Kroll, producing recent works for Netflix as well as a stage play.

Morgan Said (‘11) - Deputy Chief Of Staff at City of Kansas City, MO Morgan Said serves in Mayor Quinton Lucas’s office as Deputy Chief Of Staff for the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

Among Morgan’s duties are ensuring the accuracy, effectiveness and consistency of promoting the key mayoral priorities and messaging. She honed her communications skills in Washington, D.C., as Press Secretary for U.S. Senator Jerry Moran.
