The principal’s welcome Struer Statsgymnasium’s boarding school is a boarding school with approx. 130 students from Denmark and numerous other countries from all over the world. Therefor, the boarding school has an international environment.

With this many different nationalities there a lot of different cultures and languages that meet at the boarding school. At the boarding school we respect and celebrate the many different languages and cultures.

Living at the boarding school is a medium between living all alone in a room and living home with the family. As a student here, you will not only move away from home but also into your own room. You also move into a new community where you will find new challenges and opportunities, a rhythm and other borders.

The intention to move into our boarding school is to live and educate yourself in a common environment. The goal is one of the schools educational lines such as STX, HHX, HF, IB, HG or 10th grade. The rules and expectations of the boarding school is therefor structured to meet the following purposes.

The boarding school is  a nice and safe place to live  an inspiring place to study  a binding place where you can reach your exams.

At the boarding school you will meet an educational, creative and warm environment. We have certain requirements for you e.g. that you are open, positive and willing to corporate and actively contribute to a good integration to the boarding school. We also expect that you take school serious, meaning that you meet on time and well be prepared.

We can on the other hand promise you some nice and happy years filled with experiences, participation and community.

As boarding school student you can do as you want to a certain degree, but just as in a family there are also rules at the boarding school which are to be followed. You have freedom with responsibility for the common rules and norms which apply to the boarding school.

Many people are dependant on each other at the boarding school. Therefor you got shared responsibility for the everyday life at the boarding school, and you play a role to make a good tone between your fellow students and the personnel.

It is therefor your duty to show good companionship, good behavior and to finish the work tasks that goes along with living at the boarding school. The same you can require from the others.

Home away from home You have chosen the boarding school as your home for the next period of your youth. It will surely be an interesting time where you, by yourself, have to manage your daily life, your school and the obligations that comes with life at the boarding school.

In the following you can read about practical conditions about the boarding school and also about the things which are expected of you as a student living at Struer Statsgymnaium’s boarding school.

Together with the information in this introduction folder, to boarding school students, you should also note the boarding school study and house rules which you’ve received as you got accepted for the boarding school.

Boardingschool life is for us the good home environment for your schooling Struer Statsgymnasium. In other words, the boarding school will be your new home during your study time. Therefore, we emphasize the well-functioning everyday life, a good and healthy diet and that you are surrounded by committed and professional adults and that you become part of our boardingschool life.

Boardingschool life is our name for all the extras: We have a gym and fitness room with associated instructor, 40 mountainbikes for trips in the woods and on internationally recognized MTB route in Struer City, own sea kayaks with the opportunity to take a free kayak course, free concert experiences in the local area Cultural House (Folkets Hus), hardball, self defense, football, spinning, yoga, football, E-sports, bowling tours, nightlife tours, fishing trips and anything else. What do you want???

At our boarding school, you contribute to defining the activities at the boarding school, thus contributing to your own personal touch on boardingschool life.

An important decision.

When you decide to live at a boarding school while attending one of the school's programs, you make a significant decision for some of the most important years of your life. You must make sure that you as a student not only move from home to a room. You also move into a new community where you will find challenges and opportunities, a rhythm and some safe conditions.

Codex for good behavior – examples of expected behavior When 120 youngsters from Denmark and other countries live together, it is necessary that everyone contributes to good behavior where there are various rules and expectations for each individual student. Here is some of those that aren’t directly a part of the rule set, but anyway play a role in order to live at boarding school     

Show consideration and respect for each other and avoid bullying.

Help each other when in difficult situations. Do inform the personnel if anyone needs help.

Take into account to others with respect to loud music, noisy behavior and other noise.

Clean up after yourself and treat property in a sensible way.

Contribute to follow the rules.

Contact-boarding school personnel When you move into the boarding school you will automatically get associated with one of those in the personnel who are in charge. This person will fit you in and after 1-2 months have a conversation with you. In this conversation we would like to figure out if you are coping well and if you have any wishes to the student environment and your spare time.

The contact person will contact you if it seems like your aren't thriving well or if your school absence is rising. It is easier to solve small problems than to wait for the problems to grow big and unmanageable.

If you are under 18, then the boarding school will, in correspondence with you, contact parents if it seems necessary. As parents you are of course also welcome to contact the boarding school if there is any questions or concerns. Integration and language at the boarding school - Danish and English is the official languages To enhance and support good integration at the boarding school, Danish and English are the official languages.

It is these two languages that are used at meetings and when information's are given etc. In common areas you therefore have to speak one of these languages.

Contact to the person on duty In the daytime all inquiries are made to the boarding school teacher or to the boarding school's other staff. You can also go to the school's office. You can always see who is on duty on the notice board. Persons on duty can always be reached between 17:00 and 07:00 and 24 hours in the weekends.

You are welcome to call or text to the person on duty on the mobile phone.

This applies both in weekdays and in the weekends between 23:00 and 07:00, however, only if an acute problem occurs which requires immediate action.

You can always contact the person on duty if you have practical or personal things you would like advice or support for. Apart from this, the work of the boarding school personnel includes doing activities, holding meetings in the various committees in cooperation with the students, as well as supervising the students in relation to the site's rules and guidelines. The person on duty's recommendations always have to be followed - without exception!

If it isn’t possible for your parents to sign various school related papers regarding things like study trips, change of subject etc. then it’s possible for the parents to send a power of attorney declaration to the boarding school guardian kkr@stgym.dk

In order for the everyday life and the daily supervision at the boarding school can work well, you have to tasks and duties you have to comply with.

As boarding school student you are required to daily keep yourself updated about what happens at the boarding school. This you may do by checking the noticeboard next to the dinning room, at meetings and at dinner where messages are given.

”Where are you”-schedule

Kitchen duty

At the noticeboard next to the dinning room you will find the “where are you” schedule. Here you have to daily and latest at lunch cross off where you are; at boarding school, at home, on excursion etc.

You have approx. one kitchen duty per month. Here you help will help with setting the tables, cooking and dish washing. It is mandatory to meet at kitchen duties. If you can’t be there at a kitchen duty it is your responsibility to find replacement.

Cleanup of common areas In order for the boarding school to be a nice place to be for everybody, then it is important that it looks nice and tidy. You are as boarding school student always required to clean up after yourself

Room cleaning It’s your own responsibility that your room is clean and neat.

The person on duty goes on check up in all rooms before holidays.

In case your room is not clean and neat during this check, then there will be a more constant monitoring of your room.

Weekend schedule On this schedule you must notify which meals you will be attending at the in order for the kitchen to known how many they must cook for. The weekend schedule have to be filled out at latest Wednesday at 6 pm

When many live close together, as you do on a boarding school, then it required that you are inclusive and respect each others differences, but it also requires that you take care of each other. From the boarding schools side we expect that you are willing to take both personal and common responsibility in order for everyone to thrive well and so everyone have a nice place to be and feel comfortable at the boarding school.

Reading silence

Sleep

To insure that everyone have the opportunity to have silence to do homework, the all blocks, houses and apartments have to be quiet Monday to Thursday between 4 pm to 5.30 pm. In the exam periods this counts all the time, day and night.

Everyone have the right to get a good night’s sleep. Therefor there must be quiet at 10.30 pm at latest.

After this point of time you must extra cautious about loud music, talking in the corridors or any other noisy behavior.

Absence It is expected that you as boarding school student take school seriously, and that you meet on time and well prepared. The boarding school guardians will regularly check up on absence and have meetings with the student counselor. If we experience problems then we will talk with and look at what help you may need in order for you to get back on track.

Sickness If you get ill you should always inform the boarding school personnel orally by phone or by writing it on the “where are you” schedule.

If you use doctor advised or prescription medicine you should notify the boarding school guardian when you move into the boarding school.

The boarding school have basic medicine, patches etc.

Waking up in the morning If you in a period need help getting woken up in the morning you can always contact the person on duty.

Boarding school meeting Once a month there will be a boarding school meeting . Attending this meeting will be the principal, vice principal, on duty personnel, janitor and the kitchen manager. At this meeting current and long term issues regarding the boarding school are discussed. Studentrepresentatives are also welcome to attend the meeting so questions from the boarding school students can be brought forth and discussed with management and personnel.

Residents and block meetings There is constantly and in correspondence with the needs of the residents block meetings at the boarding school. Here is given general information but also various themes, problems and challenges can be discussed that these meetings. These meetings are mandatory. Eventual absence can be agreed with the person on duty.

Alcohol

Parties and gatherings

If you consume alcohol it is expected that you do it in a sensible and responsible way. On week days where the school is open it is not permitted to drink alcohol.

You can not bring alcoholic beverages to the boarding schools common areas. This counts indoor and outdoor and it is not permitted to store large quantities of alcohol in your room. The boarding school follows the legislation about alcohol and if you are under 18 it is not permitted to consume or drink any beverages with an alcohol percentage of 16.5.

Guests You are welcome to have guests at the boarding school. If they stay after 10 pm or sleep over, then it have to be agreed with person on duty at 9 pm latest. You are responsible for you guests obeying the rules of the boarding school.

Arrival times It is generally expected that prior to a school day come home no later than 11.30 pm. If you are out later than this remember to notify the person on duty.

Smoking It is not allowed to smoke insider nor outside on the areas belonging to the boarding school. If you go for a smoke you must go outside the areas belonging to the school and boarding school. This also counts for your guests. Water pipe and incense sticks are also not permitted.

Smaller gatherings are permitted if you have an agreement with the person on duty.

How you live The majority of the boarding school residents live in one of the three main blocks. Besides these three main blocks the boarding school also own an additional block, three houses and two apartments yet these places are mainly for third and second year students.

When you move into the boarding school, you get your own room. Your room is equipped with a desk, a wardrobe, a bed, shelves, a noticeboard, a trashcan, lamps and a laundry basket. Besides this, all rooms are equipped with an antenna connector and an internet connection. You have the opportunity to personalize your room as long as you don’t ruin or damage the room in doing so.

All rooms in the main blocks have an associated small basement room where you can store suitcases, sports equipment etc. Anything you don’t want to store in your room. If there is anything wrong with the room, then it’s important that you notify the personnel as soon as possible. This you can do by writing in the janitor book.

Bath and toilet In association with the rooms in the three main blocks there is toilets and shower rooms on every floor. In the shower room every student have a personal sink. In the houses there is shared bathrooms.

When you move in Upon moving in remember duvet, pillow, sheet, towels and cutlery and other tools you may need for the student kitchen. Besides this it is a good idea to bring a padlock for your storage room in the basement.

Main blocks There is 23 students in each block. Students are mixed across education, year, gender and nationality. In every main block and in other houses/apartments there is a student kitchen free to use. Every resident has his/her own cabinet for storing food, cutlery, etc.

Besides this there is a common room in every block where it is possible to watch TV.

Laundry In the basement under each block there is washing machines, tumble dryers and a drying room which you may freely use.

Activities The Boarding school regularly organizes various activities that you can participate in. Film hockey, play, spinning, baking, wellness, walking, hockey, running, various creative activities such as crochet, jewelery, painting, cristmas clip, basketball, etc., cinema tours, bonfire, ice skating, bowling, football, theater tours, Mountain bike tours, Oscars Night, concert venues in local concert hall pop, rock, jazz and classical music, hardball, gardening, fishing tours, participation in musical / school performance, in the spring festival with fashion shows and music. In addition, we have yearly different boarding school parties including: Introfest, spring festival, Christmas party and ending party. If you have any other ideas, then we are always open to suggestions. The activities are not mandatory, with the exception of the intro activities, but they are a very good starting point for becoming part of the community at the boarding school. If you have good ideas for activities, you are always welcome to come up with suggestions for

Bikes The boarding school has a certain number of bikes for loan, but if possible, it might be a good idea to bring your own bike. Bikes have to be parked in the bike shed.

Association activities Struer has a good association activities with a broad range of activities which you can participate in like sailing, horse riding, music, boxing, gymnastics, football and a lot of other things.

The boarding schools person will always help you with information about the various of options.

Participation and responsibility The boarding school can be seen as your home as long as you are here. Therefor there is put grate effort in involving you and giving you an opportunity to have influence on your everyday life. Together with that we expect that you as student are willing to make an effort in order to make the boarding school a nice place.

This may be done by participating in the different committees at the Boarding school. Every year at the beginning of the school year a group of people are selected for different committees at resident meeting. The committees plays a vital role at the boarding school. It is here you can influence your everyday life and the personnel can gather help for big and small questions concerning boarding school life.

The work in the committees is target at specific topics, so if you are interested in nutrition you may join the nutrition committee. If you want to make parties join the party committee, maybe it’s something for you etc.

Meals Food is an important part of the boarding school life. It is at meals where you meet and talk about anything, and at the same time you get your energy deposits refueled with good, healthy and homemade M food.

We strive to make it nice and cozy to eat in the dinning room and to make sure the food is delicious and healthy. The people working in the kitchen put an honor in making food which is homemade and freshly served. We make a combination of good Danish food and a lot of international food. The kitchen personnel are in no way afraid to try out new foreign dishes that comes from other countries. The food is planned one month at a time. You can see the plan on the noticeboard or on the school’s homepage.

Special food plans

Attendance

If you need a special food plan, the you must write it in the application form at the boarding school. It could be that you are vegan, allergic or maybe your religion doesn’t allow specific types of food.

Upon moving in we talk with you about your special nutrition needs where we figure out which kinds of food you can eat.

You must attend the evening dinner and you must meet on time. It is here that important messages are given and also where the boarding school personnel can see how well you are thriving. If you have work or hobbies that you have to take care of then it is possible to opt out of the evening dinner.

Rules and good manner in the dinning room There is a big difference between eating together with family or with 120 others. Vi have different ways of behaving when we eat. It depends on what we are used to, and there can of course also be cultural related differences. The best tip is to keep an eye on what is expected of you in the eating situations and then notice what the others do. The personnel is always there to show you how it’s done if you are doubt.

It is important that you clean up after yourself and that you obey eventual signs or notes about the food, so that the meals becomes at good experience for everyone.

During meals it is not allowed to use mobile phones. It is also not permitted to take cutlery etc. out of the dinning room.

Furthermore, the food must be eaten in the dinning room.

Guests If you have guests who would like to eat with you, then they are welcome.

You just have to buy at eating ticket from the person on duty and remember to notify the kitchen. Parents and siblings can eat for free.

Address changes When you move into the boarding school, you may to your advantage change your registered address.

This means that you automatically get a doctor assigned, and if you are under 18 you can freely go to the dentist without paying. Your new registered address will be: Struer Statsgymnasiums Kostskole, Værelse nr. [Your room number], Jyllandsgade 5, 7600 Struer, Danmark.

If you are of foreign citizenship you have to acquire a residence permit. It is also recommended to apply for Danish CPR-number. Rules and procedures and be found on www.nyidanmark.dk or you may ask the boarding school guardian.

If parents or contact persons change address and/or phone number in the period you at living on the boarding school you must immediately notify both the boarding school and school office.

Insurance The boarding school is a public institution and can therefore not insure the students. Therefore it is important that you have your own insurance. You may check if you are covered by your parents insurance.

Your room is considered a separate rental, therefor remember to lock the door when you aren’t in your room. Otherwise your insurance won’t cover.

When you are in the boarding school gym the boarding school insurance doesn’t cover you either.

If you accidentally break something it is important that the person on duty is consulted as fast as possible so the damage can be fixed.

If you break something on purposed or by hazardous behavior you must pay for replacement yourself.

License If you have TV, radio or internet connection, have turned 18 and your registered address is at the boarding school, then you have pay media license. It’s your own responsibility to sign up for this.

Payment of the boarding school Payments must happen prior or at latest the first day of the month. Gyro or invoice are sent to parents or student depending on what is agreed upon moving in.

Payments are paid in 10 parts. June and July is pay free unless you move in after 1st of November. Then you have to pay rent for Juny.

It is also possible to pay for the entire school year in one go. This can be arranged at the economy office on school, Struer Statsgymnaisum. The economy office is open on business days and can be contacted on phone number +45 97 85 43 00.

Payment solutions can either be cash, bank transfer or gyro transfer. PBS is not an option.

If payments aren’t paid a reminder will be sent and there will be a fine associated with this.

Lack of payment may end up resulting in termination of the boarding school room.

Holiday The boarding school is closed in the longer holidays. If this lead to problems you can in some circumstance apply for staying in holidays. This will cost extra and there will be special rules. The boarding school is closed in autumn, Christmas, winter, Easter and summer holidays. The boarding school always closes the last school day before the holiday at 5 pm and open the last day of the holiday 12 noon.

Termination If you wish to move away from the boarding school before you finish your education, there is notice period of one month (at latest the last day of the month). There have to be paid for the month where the termination notice is handed, and for the following month.

The termination have to be writing. If your are under 18 your parents must sign the termination.

During temporary expulsion you must pay like you normally do.

During permanent expulsion you pay for the full month unless the room can be rented out shortly after you move out.

Moving out You must submit your room in the same condition as you received it. If the room isn’t in proper condition you may have to pay for reparations, extra cleaning or other preparations of the room. Remember to hand the keys to the boarding school guardian or the janitor, and also fill out an emigration note, so you deposit can be repaid.

Before you move out of the room it has to be checked and verified by the boarding school guardian and janitor. There will be a set of instruction on how to clean and leave the room. The same rules apply if you get expelled from the boarding school.
