The Songs that made Memphis What do Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and many more all have in common? They launched their careers at the famous Sun Record Company in Memphis. The talented musicians of Sun Rising pay homage to an unforgettable era of music and relive the incredible sounds and classic tales of the early years of Sun Records – where Rock ‘n’ Roll was born. With infectious passion and standout renditions of some timeless music, this dynamic toetapping show is one not to be missed.

Performed by:

By a Thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics from some of Australia’s best emerging circus artists.

Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. Performers are hoisted and swung by one another to create striking tableaux and breath-taking dynamics.

The Sapphires

Written and Directed by Tony Briggs A much-loved Australian musical drama that is energetic, engaging and affirms life and the realisation of dreams. Four young Aboriginal women, suddenly get the chance to change their lives. Wearing sequins and armed with microphones, they find themselves trying to spread joy in the hell that is the Vietnam War. The Sapphires is a funny and heart-warming tale inspired by the true story of four Yorta Yorta Women, who sing Motown hits against the backdrop of personal change and major social upheaval.

Hook Turn Orchestra

Jazz and the Silver Screen Showcasing jazz classics and selections from celebrated film scores, Hook Turn Orchestra present an array of music that started life on the silver screen. The stunning vocals of Alinta Chidzey are accompanied by an ensemble comprised of Melbourne’s most accomplished jazz musicians and members of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Orchestra Victoria. Melding the worlds of jazz and musical theatre, this performance seeks to reinvent much-loved classics and under-appreciated film scores, featuring evocative music from all continents of the world.

Hailing from the town of Soweto, South Africa, the Soweto Gospel Choir continues to inspire audiences with their powerful blend of African gospel, freedom songs, and international classics. Comprised of 20 of the best artists in South Africa, these uplifting performers have shared the stage with U2, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Josh Groban.

Lady Beatle From the creators of ‘Rumour Has It’ and ‘Wrecking Ball’ comes the mustsee live music event of the year. Starring Australian stage and screen star Naomi Price and inspired by true accounts, Lady Beatle is a rollicking magical mystery tour sound-tracked by The Beatles’ biggest chart toppers, including ‘Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds’, ‘Eleanor Rigby’, ‘Yellow Submarine’ and ‘Penny Lane’. Rediscover The Beatles’ immortal catalogue reimagined and reinterpreted through sparkling original arrangements.

Critical Stages & The Uncertainty Principle

Sunset Strip by Suzie Miller

An Australian dramatic comedy about love, family dysfunction and making the best of lousy situations. At Sunset Strip the only people left are those who couldn’t leave. Arriving home after chemotherapy, Caroline finds the lake dried up and holiday-makers long gone. Her optimistic sister Phoebe, remains hopeful. Between a stint in rehab, caring for her father and losing her kids, Phoebe has managed to find love in Teddy, a local fallen fella with a big heart. Now that Caroline is back, Phoebe is determined to make life fabulous.

Performing Arts in Moonee Valley – Community Arts Want more local theatre? There are a host of groups bringing the arts to Moonee Valley. So why not explore the variety of community theatre groups in the area and even get involved! Essendon Theatre Company The Essendon Theatre Company (ETC) is a local communitybased theatre company located in inner-city Melbourne. ETC has a long and proud history of producing quality community theatre in Essendon. It produces four productions per year including dramas, comedies and pantomimes and since its formation in 1976, ETC has produced more than one hundred productions. ETC is a member of The Victorian Drama League (VDL) and annually submits one production as part of the VDL Awards. ETC is run on the love and commitment of passionate theatre lovers and volunteers dedicated to amateur theatre and runs from the Bradshaw Street Community Hall in Essendon essendontheatrecompany.com.au
