¡FELICIDADES CATHERINE!

The Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada elected 87 new Fellows, among them Catherine Potvin, Professor of Biology at McGill University and STRI Research Associate. In recognition of outstanding scholarly, scientific and artistic achievement, election to the academies of the Royal Society of Canada is the highest honour a scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences. This year’s Fellows will be inducted on Friday, November 27.

The RSC press release described Catherine Potvin as “a world leader in global change biology. She was among the first to show how changing carbon dioxide levels alter plant biodiversity, implemented the first long-term tropical experiment relating tree biodiversity to ecosystem function. She also developed and popularized several advanced statistical techniques. Currently, she is a driving force at local, national, and international levels shaping research, policy, and implementation of climate climate mitigation.”

La Sociedad Real de Canadá elegió 87 nuevos miembros, entre ellos a Catherine Potvin, profesora de biología en la Universidad de McGill e investigadora asociada de STRI. En reconocimiento académico excepcional, logros científicos y artísticos, la elección a la academia de la Sociedad Real de Canadá es el más alto honor que un académico puede lograr en las Artes, las Humanidades y lasCiencias. Los becarios de este año serán presentados el viernes 27 de noviembre.

El comunicado de prensa de la RSC describe a Catherine Potvin como “un líder mundial en la biología del cambio global. Fue una de las primeras en mostrar cómo el cambio de los niveles de dióxido de carbono altera la biodiversidad vegetal, implementó el primer experimento tropical a largo plazo relacionando la biodiversidad de árboles a la función de los ecosistemas. También desarrolló y popularizó varias técnicas estadísticas avanzadas. Actualmente, ella es una fuerza impulsora en los niveles locales, nacionales e internacionales que conforman la investigación, las políticas, y la aplicación de la mitigación del clima”.

AARON O’DEA

NAMED PERMANENT STAFF SCIENTIST AT THE SMITHSONIAN

NOMBRADO CIENTÍFICO PERMANENTE EN EL SMITHSONIAN

Originally from York in the North of England, Aaron O’Dea studied Ecology and Earth Science at Liverpool and completed his PhD in the School of Biological Sciences at Bristol University. For his thesis, he developed a new approach to understanding the environmental conditions of ancient oceans. Following his PhD, he worked for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds before being awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian in Panama to document environmental changes in the oceans during formation of the Isthmus of Panama. That work led to his idea that environmental changes that lead to extinctions and other major evolutionary events may happen long before these events come to pass – a theme he continues to explore in his research.

After a postdoctoral fellowship at Scripps Institution of Oceanography O’Dea won the Earl S Tupper fellowship at STRI in 2007. He explored the evolution of the life-histories of marine life histories within changing environments over geological time.

In 2012, O’Dea was appointed Associate Staff Scientist at STRI where he built a new research program that uses the recent fossil record to reveal the ecological and evolutionary consequences of long-term human interaction with biodiverse marine ecosystems.

O’Dea is a long-time mentor of Panamanian students and a champion of developing science in Latin America, is frequently invited to lead courses and present to young scientists in the region and was appointed ‘Distinguished Researcher’ for the National System of Investigators in SENACYT.

He was named one of the ‘37 under 36 Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences’ and this year his team won the award for ‘Best Research Idea’ by the Caribbean Marine Biological Institute.

He has considerable experience in the field, having led over 20 marine and paleontological field expeditions across the tropical world. He has authored 46 peer-reviewed papers, is editor for the Bulletin of Marine Science and has published two books.

He is married to Panamanian doctor Marina Pacheco.

They have two children.

“ He is a researcher who embodies the characteristics that I value most in a scientist,” said STRI Director, Matthew Larsen, “Aaron has demonstrated that he is, and will continue to be an important part of the STRI scientific community because of the excellence of his science, because he is a highly productive researcher, an innovative and collaborative scientist, and is multidisciplinary in his approach. O’Dea is a good communicator to audiences from his scientific peers, to school children, donors, foundations, community organizations, and governmental officials.”

Originario de York, en el norte de Inglaterra, Aaron O’Dea estudió Ecología y Ciencias de la Tierra en Liverpool y completó su doctorado en la Escuela de Ciencias Biológicas de la Universidad de Bristol. Su tesis ideó, probó y aplicó un nuevo enfoque para determinar las condiciones paleoambientales de los mares antiguos.

Luego de su doctorado O’Dea trabajó para la Real Sociedad para la Protección de las Aves, antes de ser galardonado con una beca de post doctorado en el Smithsonian para documentar los cambios ambientales durante la formación del Istmo de Panamá. Ese trabajo dio lugar a la teoría de que los controladores medioambientales de eventos macroevolutivos no tienen por qué estar necesariamente en sincronía - un tema que continúa explorando.

Después de una beca de post doctorado en el Instituto Scripps de Oceanografía, O’Dea obtuvo la beca Earl S. Tupper de STRI en el 2007 cuando exploró la evolución de la historia de la vida marina en entornos cambiantes a través del tiempo geológico.

En el 2012, fue nombrado como científico asociado en el Smithsonian donde creó un nuevo programa de investigación que utiliza el registro fósil reciente para revelar las consecuencias ecológicas y evolutivas de la interacción humana a largo plazo con los ecosistemas marinos ricos en biodiversidad.

Por mucho tiempo ha sido mentor de estudiantes panameños y un campeón en el desarrollo de la ciencia en América Latina, con frecuencia es invitado a liderar cursos y presentar a jóvenes científicos de la región y fue nombrado ‘Investigador Distinguido’ para el Sistema Nacional de Investigadores en la Secretaría Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (SENACYT).

Fue nombrado uno de los 37 jóvenes innovadores (menores de 36 años) en las Artes y las Ciencias por Smithsonian Magazine y este año su equipo ganó el premio a la “Mejor Idea de Investigación” por el Instituto de Biología Marina del Caribe.

O’Dea tiene una experiencia considerable en el campo al haber llevado a cabo más de 20 expediciones marinas y paleontológicas de campo en todo el mundo tropical. Es autor de 46 artículos revisados por colegas, es editor del Bulletin of Marine Science y ha publicado dos libros.

Se casó con la médico panameña Marina Pacheco y tienen dos hijos.

“Tengo a Aaron en alta estima. Es un investigador que encarna las características que más valoro en un científico. Ha demostrado que es, y seguirá siendo una parte importante de la comunidad científica de STRI, por la excelencia de su ciencia, porque él es un investigador altamente productivo, científico innovador y colaborativo, y es multi-disciplinario en su enfoque.

O’Dea es un buen comunicador frente a múltiples tipos de público, no sólo con sus compañeros científicos, sino también con niños de escuelas, los donantes, las fundaciones, organizaciones de la comunidad y funcionarios gubernamentales,” comentó Matthew Larsen, director del Smithsonian en Panamá.
