In today’s economy, you never know what could change in the blink of an eye. An email landed in my inbox the other day, and among the rest of the ads and spam I was sifting through, this one stuck out.

The author of the email shared her plans for facing the unknown as a business owner in a way that will always benefit your business, investing in yourself. No one understands your business and its growth more than you, so it is important to prioritize your own strength and security in uncertain times.

When you start a business, you invest in yourself. That means you no longer have to share the value you create, but reaping such a reward isn’t easy. The commercial branch of this development is the Woodlands Enterprise Center, which has drastically expanded in the last year. “As the residential community continues to expand, there exists the demand for retailers, physicians, offices, industrial, and other services in the area," said commercial property manager Allison Santana, "At the Woodlands Enterprise Center we offer a variety of structures to suite the individual needs of the user. The Home Builders Association of Lincoln’s (HBAL) Spring Parade of Homes is the week of May 1421. Every spring and fall, HBAL organizes a Parade of Homes for the public, offering potential home buyers a great opportunity to walk through new homes and meet the builders. Beginning Mother’s Day, May 14 through Sunday, May 21, homes will be open weeknights from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The event is free and features a number of local home building companies at various locations around Lincoln. The 2023 Spring Parade guidebook will be available a few weeks prior to the Parade on the HBAL website.

The Home Builders Association of Lincoln is a visible, effective and respected trade association which promotes home building through professional education, member communication and civic participation, and which represents builders and associated professionals in community, government and industry forums. The University of Nebraska Print & Mail Services was the 2023 host for the 57th Association of College and University Printers (ACUP+) national convention. tobacco free Lancaster County highlights Lincoln smoking regulation Act

Tobacco Free Lancaster County (TFLC) reminds business owners and patrons in Lincoln about the Lincoln Smoking Regulation Act, which prohibits smoking and the use of electronic smoking devices in enclosed indoor workspaces and indoor public places. This ordinance was enacted to protect workers and the public from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke and aerosols. Inhaling secondhand smoke can increase the risk of developing heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and other respiratory illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis. While e-cigarettes do not produce smoke, they do release an aerosol containing harmful chemicals, including nicotine, heavy metals and flavorings that can cause lung damage. Breathing in secondhand e-cigarette aerosol can also increase the risk of respiratory problems, especially for individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma.

To help with compliance, businesses can post “No Smoking, Including E-cigarettes” signs in highly visible areas such as entrances and restrooms. CASA for Lancaster County is seeking volunteers, and a training session for new volunteers is set to begin on May 30. This will be a shorter orientation session. All training sessions will be held at CASA for Lancaster County, 1141 H St., STE C on the third floor.

The class will meet once a week on Tuesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. for five weeks, with the exception of the fifth week, which will be held on Wednesday, July 5.

CASA volunteers are trained community advocates who are assigned to abused/neglected children who are in Juvenile Court through no fault of their own. CASA volunteers have a court order that gives them access to the child and to all of their records so that the CASA volunteer can carry out an objective, systematic examination of the situation and determine the needs of the child. This is done by interviewing all interested and concerned parties to determine the facts and reviewing all records, documents and clinical data. CASA volunteers get to know the child and they communicate the child’s wishes to the judge. CASA volunteers are required to attend approximately 30 hours of pre-service training and 12 hours of in-service (continuing education) annually and are supervised by a CASA staff person.

Nebraska Innovation Campus (NIC) is a proud partner for the annual Towel Drive event. Organized by Don’t Panic Labs and People’s City Mission. The event aims to collect towels for people in need. Towels are always in short supply and this twoweek donation drive serves a vital need.

From May 15-26, NIC Partners and the Lincoln community are encouraged to bring towels to The Mill Coffee & Bistro between 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Additional public collection sites can be viewed by visiting dontpaniclabs.com/towelday. New or used towels in any condition and of any size will be accepted. The towels will be used at the People’s City Mission shelter in Lincoln. The 2022 Towel Day drive collected 1,706 towels. ZiplineBreweryAnnounces plans to expand

Zipline Brewing Co., Lincoln’s second-oldest continuously operating brewery, has announced plans to close its original taproom location at 2100 Magnum Circle, which has been open for just over a decade.

However, the reason it’s closing is actually good news. Zipline needs the space to expand its brewing operations.

“We plan to double the brewing capacity by adding a south cellar area with eight new fermentation tanks where the taproom currently resides,” Marcus Powers, Zipline’s cofounder and chief financial officer, said in an email.

Powers said the brewery, which has grown to become the state’s largest by production volume, has been nearing capacity for years now at the facility that’s near the intersection of West O Street and U.S. 77.

The plan is to break ground on the project in mid-summer and complete it in September.

Zipline has a beer hall in the Village Gardens development at 56th Street and Pine Lake Road, and it also has two taproom locations in Omaha, all of which will remain open and operating.

how does ending the CoVid-19 phe impact you?

On April 11, the federal government ended the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE). This signals the official end to many federal protections that were put in place to help the nation navigate the pandemic. There are implications for the coverage of COVID testing/treatment and Medicaid coverage with the expiration of the PHE.

Most carriers are continuing to cover the COVID-19 vaccination at no cost to the insured by adopting it as a part of their preventive benefits. However, you’ll want to make sure that you receive the vaccine from an in-network provider or pharmacy. If you use an out-of-network pharmacy or doctor’s office to receive this vaccination, you may be responsible for the full cost of the vaccination and administration charge.

As of April 11th, in-office COVID-19 tests and related expenses will be subject to the standard cost share benefits of your plan. Typically, the most appropriate test is the rapid or PCR test which only tests for COVID-19. To prevent unexpected expenses, avoid multiple or large panel tests. Surveillance testing is not a covered benefit, in-network or out-of-network. Additionally, telehealth visits related to the diagnosing of COVID-19 will be covered under the standard telehealth benefits of your plan.

Over-the-counter COVID-19 tests will also no longer be covered by most health plans, with the ending of the PHE. A person can use HSA or FSA funds to purchase these tests. The treatment of COVID-19, including approved medications, will be covered under your plan’s standard benefits.

Medicaid “unwinding” is another biproduct of the expiration of the COVID-19 PHE. During the period of March 2020 through March 2023 Medicaid did not disenroll members who were no longer Medicaid eligible with the intention of providing continuous coverage during the pandemic. Medicaid eligibility is based upon a number of factors such as income and resources. Nebraska Medicaid began their “unwinding” process on March 1, 2023 and it will continue over the next 14 months. If a person is no longer eligible for Medicaid they will receive a notice from Medicaid and information on how to obtain coverage through the Marketplace.

While COVID-19 will remain a part of our lives and healthcare, the end of the PHE signals a return to normal benefits and operations for our health carrier systems. This will align coverage and costs for COVID-19 with other similar services.

We deal in Gold, Silver, Platinum and Palladium as well as Historic Coin and Currency. Whether you are a seasoned precious metals stacker, new to investing or dealing with an inherited collection, our team is here to help. Since we are not a commission-based sales team, we get to focus on education and facilitating services to meet your needs. LCB has existed since 2006 near Union College and changed ownership about three years ago. We have just three full-time employees and two part-time students that work around their class schedules. How did you get started in the business? - I was desperate to find a new position so I took a chance on applying. What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - You don’t learn about coins and precious metals as investments in school, so I really knew nothing about the industry when I began. The markets change constantly and there is always updated information regarding coins many thanks to technology and research. My first two weeks of employment I left exhausted daily by all the brain power used, and even experienced a bit of imposter syndrome! The team was great and calmed my worries, and after enough practice, I talk about these things with ease. My goal in every customer interaction is to help them feel that same sense of ease when talking about investments and collections. What has been your most important achievement professionally? - Working for a small business allows you a lot of room for impact. I’ve been a part of creating and documenting proven processes, developing a training manual for new employees as well as the creative portion of our new website build, which we hope to roll out to our customers within the next six months!

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Weather permitting, I love sitting outside over coffee or a meal with friends and then wandering around the area to see what else is nearby. I like visiting small business that I’ve never been to before and seeing what they have to offer! I love a good hidden gem.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - Intelligence isn’t how much you know, but rather recognizing all the things you don’t know and being relentless in your efforts to learn. What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Lincoln’s Big Brother Big Sister (BBBS) program is something I would encourage everyone to give some thought to. My uncle mentored a Little for over 11 years who is now a husband and father, and still very much so a part of our family. My youngest child has a Big currently and I can’t express to you how much that relationship means to our family! BBBS has great community relationships which allow for matches to spend quality time together at no or very little cost. They don’t just provide mentorship, but they also help families find other resources to set them up for success. If you have just two hours a week, consider mentoring through BBBS. It is lifechanging for the youth served.

Meet Christine Krueger, owner and president of Club Pilates Lincoln.

Tell us a little about your business. - Club Pilates offers reformer based Pilates workouts with 12 reformers per class. Pilates is a low impact, core workout that helps with your balance and flexibility. Our instructors are nationally certified with 500 hours of training. This allows them to provide modifications to exercises to suit your body as well as progressions when you want a bigger challenge. We offer nine different types of classes for beginners and those that are well versed in the Pilates regimen.

How did you get started in the business? - I personally started doing Pilates in Arizona where my husband and I lived for eight years. I have never been athletic and I was feeling the effects of menopause in my body. My balance and flexibility were poor and I had little to no core strength.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - In opening the business, the biggest challenge has been the time it has taken for permits from the city and the construction time line.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? - I was in banking for 36 years. Although it was a good career for me and I learned many things, the thing I like most about Club Pilates is talking to people about their goals and knowing that Pilates will help them meet them. Even if you haven’t worked out in a while or have weight you’d like to lose, you can still do Pilates.

Tell us a little about your family. - My husband and I have three children living in Lincoln and Omaha. Our son is the general manager for Club Pilates and one of our daughters will be an instructor. We have eight grandchildren ranging in age from 21 to newborn.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?

- Pilates was a big turning point for me. Not only was it something that I found that I could do for exercise that I liked and was capable of, it also turned into a business opportunity for me and my family.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to read and play with the grandchildren.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I used to play the piano.

Who inspires you? - I have met several young people from Rotary that are doing amazing things for our world and our community. One of my friends does wells in South Sudan for people that have never had clean drinking water. Another one has an organization that helps new immigrants get on their feet in this country.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - Rotary. I have been involved in Rotary for ten years now. They have very little overhead, so almost all the money donated goes to causes at the local level and throughout the world.

Tell us a little about your business. - Kingery Construction is a General Contractor. We are excited to be preparing to celebrate our 100th Anniversary in January 2024 and have enjoyed the wide variety of projects we have worked on in Nebraska.

How did you get started in the business? - My mom would take me to houses being built in my hometown when I was growing up. We would trespass (ha!) through the house and guess what each room was going to be. That started my interest in Construction Management and reading plans.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - Being a woman in construction. Years ago, I found out that another woman and I were being paid much less than men in the same role. It was an eye-opening experience.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Getting promoted to director. I’m very honored that I was picked for this role. My goal in my career was to become a project manager, so I wasn’t thinking beyond that role. I definitely enjoyed my PM role on my projects, but I’m excited to learn this new position.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have one daughter who is six years old.

- The birth of my daughter. Life became more about why I’m working. What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - Cook. I don’t mean cooking for dinner – I don’t enjoy that, but I like cooking new/ extravagant recipes. I plan happy hour for my family and friends once a month. I have a new theme each month that all the food and drink is based around. It takes me three-four nights to prep. We have been doing this for the last five years and I haven’t had a repeat theme yet!

Who inspires you? - My daughter. She tells me she wants to be a boss just like me when she grows up!

I always end meetings by directly asking every person in the meeting if they have a question or comment. I wished someone would have asked me if I had a question when I was younger. There were many times, I had the answer but didn’t speak up.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - Accountable.

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? - Cake decorating. I’m pretty awesome at icing roses! All three organizations are for women. I’m passionate about encouraging women in their career/life.

Tell us a little about your business. - At Choices Treatment Center, I currently work with individuals struggling with substance use, grief, identity, trauma, relationship concerns, anxiety and depression.

How did you get started in the business? - I never expected to be in the counseling profession until I started seeing a counselor myself. My counselor at the time and my husband were the ones who encouraged me to consider the idea of entering the profession. I would not be here without the prompting of some important people in my life who saw something in me that I did not see in myself.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? - I have had to work through my own trauma while going to school and working. The challenge of managing myself and tending to my own needs while also completing homework and effectively helping others was and still is sometimes overwhelming.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?To my knowledge, I am the first in my family to start and complete an undergraduate and graduate program. I am really thankful to have the support and resources to pursue and complete such a big task.

Tell us a little about your family. - I have a husband, Art Wilson. We have been married for almost five years.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - My husband and I enjoy biking, working out and fishing.

Who inspires you? - My husband. He has been through hell and has experienced a lot of bummer things, but today he is eight years sober, finished his MBA, completed multiple certifications and is about to start a PhD program. On top of all that, he is an amazing husband that loves me well. I don’t think I could ask for a better inspiration than him.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? - I’m not sure I want to be remembered... I would describe myself as Christian and as a Christ follower, I don’t think my job is to be remembered. Plus, memories fade and do not last. People will eventually forget me or simply not know me generations later. Rather, I want people to know and experience Christ through me. This is what matters, and this is what lasts.

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - In addition to working at Choices, I also work as a personal trainer. The combination of both is helpful for my wellness. Plus, I’m a big advocate for overall wellness including mind, body, and spirit, so I think having the knowledge of each area is helpful for clients. I also hope to be a mom someday and I would love for that venture to be successful. What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? - I am on the board of directors for Transformations Thrift Store. In short, Transformations seeks to transform the community by loving their neighbors. Not only do they provide quality goods at a decent price for people in the neighborhood, but they also have a relational approach to service and provide a place for people to feel safe and belong. It’s something worth being a part of.

Tell us a little about your business. - I knew when I started working as a plumber over 12 years ago that I wanted to own my own plumbing company eventually. We started in 2019 my word of mouth and just me, and quickly it has grown. I strive to make sure we get the job done right. It is important to me that when I am working with someone they know they can trust us with their project.

How did you get started in the business? - I worked in corrections prior to getting into plumbing. I have always loved working with my hands either on vehicles, small engines, or house projects, and I love seeing a project from start to finish, which feels like such a great accomplishment. So I left corrections, and I started working as a warehouse manager for a plumbing company here in Lincoln 12 years ago and moved through all the different aspects of plumbing, excavating and ditch work, construction plumbing, and service. I wanted to know as much as I could so that I could eventually open my own company. Over the years, I built up my own customer base and was able to finally make a name for myself.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

- Understanding that owning your own business is far more paperwork than I realized.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Obtaining my master's license and starting my own business.

Tell us a little about your family. - My wife and I have been married for nine years, and have three kids. They are all into various activities so our life is being their Uber drivers to their functions. We enjoy spending time at the trap range or bowling alley with our oldest, or watching some micro volleyball and micro soccer with my younger two. We also love to travel and spend most of our travel adventures trying to enjoy the outdoors.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? - I can work in plumbing all day, but the site of chewed bubble gum makes my stomach churn. Tell us a little about your business. - AOI offers solutions for the built environment through our construction, furniture and pre-manufactured construction groups. We help create inspiring, smart working environments. We are the exclusive MillerKnoll furniture dealer in Nebraska and have access to hundreds of other furniture manufacturers along with Dirtt Modular Interior Construction. I lead our business development efforts for Lincoln and I’m excited to grow existing relationships within the community as well as develop new ones, we want to be the team to go to for commercial furnishings to make work easier and to create spaces where employees want to spend time!

How did you get started in the business? - I have experience in residential interiors, but my passion is furniture, specifically in commercial interiors; I am definitely a furniture nerd. I began my adventure in commercial interiors when I moved to Southern California ten years ago. I worked for two of the largest commercial furniture providers in the region and learned a lot during my time there. I am excited to bring my knowledge and experience back to Lincoln.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?

- Does everyone say COVID? It’s changed nearly everything! Product availability and lead times were so challenging for a while and how we work and design to support these new modes of work has changed immensely.

What has been your most important achievement professionally?

- Helping create spaces that make people happier, healthier and higher performing. Nothing is a bigger accomplishment for me than helping people every day.

Tell us a little about your family. - I was born and raised in Lincoln, and just moved back with my husband and two little boys after living in San Diego for ten years. We’re excited to raise our children in the Lincoln community and be closer to family and friends.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? - I grew so much professionally and personally while living in California far away from family and friends. I learned independence, perseverance and built an amazing career.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? - I love to be outdoors, hiking, running or walking. We love to try local breweries and eateries, but just spending time with my wonderful husband and kiddos makes me happiest.

Who inspires you? - My grandparents. They built an amazing life, raised a family that they support above all. They showed me hard work and honesty go a long way.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? - “Always remember you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think.”

If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? - If I could own a vineyard in Tuscany that would be my dream, a winemaker!

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? - I mostly read cookbooks at this point in my life and my favorites are from Half Baked Harvest!

Founder and CEO Aaron Newell had the opportunity to judge this year’s New Venture Competition through UNL’s College of Business. Judges for the New Venture Competition come from a variety of sectors and bring diverse and valued perspectives gained through their professional experiences to their roles in evaluating the competition. Judges also play important roles as role models and sources of encouragement as well as trusted voices to offer constructive critiques and reinforce student learning.

The New Venture Competition is a celebration of entrepreneurial learning and competition. Graduate and undergraduate business plan competitions were held for Nebraska students during the two-day event. Students pitch their business plans to judges from the Lincoln and Omaha business community and field questions on current traction, monetization strategies, risky assumptions and more.

The New Venture Competition runs in a bracket, or knockout format. Teams advance through two preliminary rounds. Following elimination rounds, four teams compete against each other for the grand prize. One grand prize of $15,000 along with additional cash prizes awarded during the Networking and Awards Reception. Top four have the opportunity for further investment up to $25,000 from the Husker Venture Fund.

southeast Community College Business Instructor Janet Scott Wins Regional Award

Janet Scott, an instructor of economics, global business and introduction to global studies on the Lincoln Campus of Southeast Community College (SCC), was recently selected as the recipient of the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs Teaching Excellence Award for Region 5.

As a regional winner, Scott will receive $500, a crystal medallion and a waiver of registration fees to the annual conference. Winners from each of the 11 regions within ACBSP will be honored at the 2023 annual conference June 29-July 2 in Chicago. The Accreditation and Awards Gala is scheduled for the evening of July 1. The national award-winners also will be named at the conference.

“Janet is such a deserving recipient,” Dr. Beth Deinert, co-chair of the Business program on the Lincoln Campus said. “She personifies higher education in her approach to teaching and learning, professional development and her unwavering commitment to SCC and the diverse communities we serve. fresh start welcomes Amanda mcKay

Fresh Start, a residential program for women experiencing homelessness, is excited to welcome Amanda McKay to the team. She started as the development coordinator in April 2023 and is the new lead for fundraising and charitable giving. She is also the point person for community outreach for the organization, including volunteers and speaking opportunities.

Ms. McKay began her career as case manager and then moved to administrative roles. She has experience in both nonprofits and corporate settings. She was drawn to Fresh Start because of its mission and its focus on serving a traditionally underserved group (women who are homeless).

“I have a heart for nonprofits, and for helping people. This position is a great match for my skills and passions,” Amanda said. Effie Athanassopoulos (Lincoln): Athanassopoulos is a long-time Lincoln resident, a dual citizen of Greece and the U.S., and an anthropology professor at UNL who has been creating new digital resources to facilitate research and public access to Nebraska’s material past.

Michael Evans (Peru): President of Peru State College since July 2021, Evans earned his Ph.D. in folklore from Indiana University, focusing on expressions of indigenous cultures through mass media. Newly elected to the Foundation are:

Mary Raimondo (Columbus): Raimondo has been a community volunteer for most of her life, with particular affinity for the arts and humanities. She served on the Friends of Lied board for six years and on the Columbus Arts Council for five years, taking on leadership roles for each organization.

Parents are often actively involved in finding academic and social activities for their elementaryaged students, but what happens once those students enter middle school? It seems the door opens to a dizzying array of after-school clubs, sports and extracurricular opportunities. friendship home Announces october 8 as the 21st Annual safe Quarters date

On Sunday, October 8, Friendship Home will host its 21st Annual Safe Quarters event. On this day, over a thousand Friendship Home volunteers will head out to Lincoln neighborhoods to knock on every household door and collect financial contributions for survivors of domestic violence, all while raising awareness of the life-saving services Friendship Home provides. Safe Quarters is Friendship Home’s largest annual fundraiser. In 2022, over $90,000 was raised, and as a result, Friendship Home was able to save and change the lives of over 1,500 victims of domestic violence.

October has served as Domestic Violence Awareness Month since 1987. In Lancaster County, one in four women will experience domestic violence at some point in their life. Through crisis services, emergency shelter and transitional housing, Friendship Home helps survivors, and their children, gain insight into their trauma and guides them to use their strengths to rebuild their lives—free from domestic violence.

Angels Among Us provides grab and go bags to all pediatric cancer families that come to Nebraska Medicine or Children’s Hospital. These bags include toiletry items, notebook, pens, water bottles and a binder with all pertinent information the family now needs to care for their child with cancer. They do this as a way to provide comfort and support to the family in their hardest of moments. To assist in supplying these bags, Angels Among Us often turns to the community for the items needed.

Youth for Christ promotes supporting parent Life ministry for Give to Lincoln day

Youth for Christ (YFC) is a nondenominational, nonprofit organization serving youth in the Lincoln community and surrounding areas. They focus on three areas of ministry, Parent Life, Campus Life and Juvenile Justice Ministry. Parent Life gives hope to expecting and parenting teens. The positive sign on a pregnancy test can be a scary sight for any middle school or high school student. Parent Life comes alongside these students and their children to let them know they are not alone.

This Give to Lincoln Day, consider supporting Youth for Christ and their Parent Life ministry. The YFC Parent Life team provides a faithbased support, encouragement and guidance to equip pregnant or parenting teens to make good choices and to complete their education. Healthy emotional support and education assistance are vital to teens as they move toward self-sufficiency and positive parenting. The Nebraska Statewide Arboretum (NSA) will offer several plant sales open to the public throughout May and June in Lincoln and Omaha. Native plants wellsuited to Nebraska’s climate and growing conditions will be available, including trees, shrubs and perennials. Christian record services releases 2023 summer Camp Locations

Christian Record Services has recently released its roster of summer camp locations as they prepare for another successful summer of camp experiences for children and adults who are blind or experiencing vision loss. This summer, campers may enjoy a plethora of indoor and outdoor activities at summer camps in Minnesota, Indiana, Oklahoma, Washington, Maine, California and Florida. Activities include horseback riding, archery, water skiing, crafts, cooking and even a zip line over the lake.

A previous camper commented that he was “amazed” at how the camp staff treated the people who were blind. “They treated blind people like the rest of the people here. Like human beings.” Since beginning in 1967, over 50,000 campers have experienced camps through National Camps for Blind Children, a program of Christian Record Services. Each camp is scheduled at a wellequipped site, chosen especially for the standard of excellence and geographical location. Committed staff and counselors are trained to meet the needs of legally blind campers who are between the ages of 9 and 65. 27th Annual Catholic social services memorial Golf Classic & Auction setforAugust4

On Friday, August 4, Hillcrest Country Club in Lincoln will host the 27th annual Catholic Social Services Memorial Golf Classic & Auction, a major fundraiser for the programs of Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS). This year’s event is in memory of Jose Quintero.

Last year, 288 golfers participated in the tournament. The silent auction portion of the event took place online, allowing folks from anywhere to bid on items. Through the generosity of golfers, bidders and sponsors, last year’s event raised a net amount of over $114,000 for the programs and services of CSS.

YmCA of Lincoln to host swimsuit drive to support Area Youth

The YMCA of Lincoln is set to host its third annual community-wide swimsuit drive from May 10-23, collecting new and gently used swimsuits for more than 150 children enrolled in grantbased swim lessons this summer. The opportunity to teach youth how to swim, along with life-saving water safety skills is made possible by a swimming lesson grant through Y-USA and in partnership with Lincoln Public Schools and Lincoln Community Learning Centers.

“Two of the biggest barriers families face when wanting to provide swim lessons for their children are transportation and cost – both for the lessons and swimsuits,” shared Tabetha Burnham, aquatics director at the Northeast YMCA. “As the community’s leader in swim instruction, we’re grateful to be in a position to teach children of all ages and from all backgrounds the importance of water safety while helping overcome fears.”

To participate, donors can drop off swimsuits at any of the four Lincoln YMCA locations. Sizes needed are youth XS-XL for boys and girls (onepiece preferred). Swimsuits will be distributed to students attending Lincoln’s Community Learning Centers, with swim lessons beginning in early June. YMCA and community members donating swimsuits will be entered to win one free session (six classes) of group swimming lessons at the Lincoln YMCA along with a free week pass to “Try the Y.”

Lincoln Children’s museum Announces opening of renovated exhibit “the orchard”

The Lincoln Children’s Museum is thrilled to announce the upcoming opening of The Orchard exhibit, an exciting newly remodeled area of play.

In The Orchard, children can harvest apples and watch them travel through the exhibit on conveyor belts, make and sell pretend items made with apples and learn about pollinators and the role they play in the production of apples.

The Orchard exhibit is located on the upper level of the museum and is designed to tie in with the existing tree that spans all three floors of the museum. Executive Director Tara Knuth is thrilled to offer this new experience to visitors.

“We believe The Orchard is a fantastic opportunity for children to learn about the apple›s journey, pollinators, and entrepreneurship in a fun and interactive way," said Knuth.

The exhibit upgrade is made possible by the Kimmel Charitable Foundation. Len Weyeneth, president and treasurer of the Kimmel Foundation’s board, echoes Knuth’s enthusiasm.

“One of the first grants made by the Kimmel Foundation was the Kimmel Tree when the Children’s Museum moved to its current location,” said Weyeneth. “The impact of the Museum has had on so many children to ‘learn through the power of play’ is incredible. School Community Intervention & Prevention (SCIP) is excited to announce that “The Signs and Symptoms of Gambling Use Disorder”, presented by Jeremy Eberle and Janet Johnson, will be held June 16 at Lincoln Medical Education Partnership, 4600 Valley Road. This four-hour continuing education training will begin at 8:30 a.m., and as a result of the training, participants will be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of Gambling Use Disorder (GUD), review different assessments that can be used to detect GUD and discuss intervention strategies that can be used to treat GUD. Four Continuing Education Contact hours are provided and the training is intended for LADC’s, licensed mental health practitioners, as well as school professionals who assist in connecting students to behavioral health supports. His talk will cover how people of faith might be involved and interact with politics, especially in today’s divided political environment. He will also share about his life and leadership experiences, his role in ministry, government and his relationship with Jesus Christ. At Ease USA (AEU) will be hosting the annual Forge Ahead 5K on Saturday, June 24 at the Walnut Creek Recreation Area in Papillion. The month of June has been designated as PTSD Awareness Month. Community Action shines Light on Volunteers during national Volunteer week

At Community Action Partnership of Lancaster and Saunders Counties, volunteers are vital. From meal service at the Gathering Place to classroom help at Head Start, volunteers give Community Action programs a boost across the agency. This National Volunteer Week (April 16-22), Community Action recognized volunteers for their contributions with a mini-golf and pizza celebration.

In the past 12 months, over 600 volunteers served nearly 12,000 hours with Community Action programs. The dedication and kindness shown by these volunteers is astounding and always appreciated.

“I’m so inspired by the way the community has supported our agency through service,” said Heather Loughman, Community Action CEO. “When we opened up the Gathering Place for indoor dining again last fall, we needed more people to serve food each night, and our volunteers didn’t miss a beat – it was amazing. Bridge Behavioral health’s socks, soap & hope drive ends in success

The Bridge Behavioral Health’s first annual donation drive, Socks, Soap & Hope comes to an end – raising over $1,500 and more than 2,200 items. With many thanks to the community, 750 individuals will benefit from the donations collected. The Bridge sends a special thank you to John Henry’s Plumbing and Fellowship Community Church for hosting donation drives in support of Socks, Soap & Hope.

In a typical year, 1,100 individuals will access services at The Bridge and most of whom have no insurance or are eligible for Medicaid. Whether they seeking withdrawal services, respite or residential treatment, The Bridge provides them with the necessities to ensure a dignified and comfortable stay. The Brain Injury Alliance of Nebraska is pleased to announce that registration is open for its annual 5K Run, 1 Mile Walk/Roll fundraiser, Blazing Trails for Brain Injury.

The event will be held on June 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is open to all ages, abilities and fitness levels to participate and raise money and awareness for brain injury in Nebraska as they walk, run or roll along the course at the Chalco Hills Recreation Area. For the more competitive participants, the 5K run will be timed by Peak Performance: The Running Store and can be used to qualify for marathon events.

Goodwill helps UnL and wesleyan students declutter during finals

Goodwill Industries Serving Southeast Nebraska, Inc. is teaming up with the University of NebraskaLincoln and Nebraska Wesleyan University for their annual Campus Move-Out Donation Drive. During the last two weeks of the school year, Goodwill will place donation barrels inside residence halls, so students can conveniently donate their extra clothing, electronics and home goods before they head home for the summer. Wesleyan students can donate from April 26 to May 8, and UNL students can donate from May 8 to May 22.

When students donate to Goodwill, they help change lives through the power of work. The revenue from Goodwill’s thrift stores in Lincoln and York helps fund local programs that assist job seekers as they overcome barriers to employment. In 2022 alone, Goodwill served over 4,000 individuals with employment-related services, such as job skills training, mentorship, mock interviews and more. Thanks to community donors, Goodwill also diverted over 2.2 million pounds of materials from the local landfill. matt talbot provides housing and support to senior

Stacy and Greg were married 48 years when they decided to purchase an RV and become “professional travelers.” Sadly, this dream came to an end when Greg unexpectedly passed away last year. This devastating loss left Stacy with little support, substantial medical bills and no home. She was living in her car when she reached out to Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach, which led to her acceptance into the agency’s rapid rehousing program. Stacy’s dedicated case worker was able to find a beautiful apartment that she will soon be moving into.

Stacy realizes how easily one traumatic event can cause everything to spiral. When reflecting on her difficult journey, Stacy stated “Giving up isn’t an option. You have to keep walking forward.” Matt Talbot is here to help when life’s unforeseen challenges create difficult obstacles. teammates of Lincoln reaps 100% on Jersey Mike’s Day of Giving

Nationwide in March, Jersey Mike’s launched a “Month of Giving”. Jersey Mike’s stores and customers this year raised a record breaking $21 million to help 200+ local charities. Locally this translates into the “Day of Giving” for a chosen nonprofit organization each year.

The Lincoln chapter of TeamMates was the recipient of this year’s Day of Giving donation, 100% of the proceeds from both Jersey Mike’s locations on March 29.

“We couldn’t be more thankful for this great gift,” says Jim Bennett, Lincoln TeamMates coordinator. “I spent several hours at both locations and was blown away by the great community support for TeamMates mentoring.”

Traffic at both Jersey Mike’s locations was steady to jam packed between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Employees worked to fill a record number of orders arriving on-line and at the counter.

“The Jersey Mike’s crew were rock stocks!” said Christine Davis, TeamMates staff member. “We just tried to keep those waiting focused on gratitude.”

12th Annual Give to Lincoln day set for may 24

Lincoln’s 12th annual giving day is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24.

Coordinated by the Lincoln Community Foundation (LCF), Give to Lincoln Day is an online event encouraging donations to support the local nonprofits and causes people care about. More than 450 local charities have registered for this year’s event. Every participating nonprofit organization will receive a proportional share of the $500,000 match fund, based upon its percentage of total dollars raised, thanks to many generous sponsors including Presenting Sponsor, West Gate Bank. Last year’s event raised $8 million for local nonprofits. The event has raised $50 million in its 11-year history.

People’s City Mission (PCM) is excited to announce their 6th annual Towel Day Drive in collaboration with Don’t Panic Labs. PCM provides a towel to each of their guests when they come in and with the number of people they help, that’s a lot of towels! Towels are an easily overlooked need and People’s City Mission so grateful for Don’t Panic Labs for doing this drive with them every year to make sure each guest at PCM has their own towel. Voices of Hope is pleased to announce that they will be hosting a Spring Restock beginning Monday, May 22 through Sunday, May 28 at 2545 N St. The restock will include basic need items and/ or gift cards for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and incest. Their agency is always accepting basic need items, but this week they will be making a concerted effort to restock the items and gift cards that their clients utilize the most. Lincoln City Libraries Celebrates 2022 Volunteer efforts

Lincoln City Libraries is sharing the love and pride they have for their dedicated volunteers. In 2022, volunteers donated 6,234 hours of work which equates to $186,708.

The Board of Trustees of Lincoln City Libraries has proclaimed the week of April 16–April 22 Volunteer Appreciation Week, and they celebrated the efforts of 2022 volunteers at a celebration on April 16. This year, two volunteers won the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, Deva and Reema. Deva donated 250 hours, and Reema donated 110 hours. Kim and Melvia tied for most hours donated, 279.5 hours.

Thomas Tangeman was recognized for volunteering for 25 years. The libraries also honored 15, 10 and five-year volunteers, plus the many, many other faces that help them do a LOT with a little. They each play a critical role in helping the libraries to serve the community. Library volunteers come from all segments of the community. Students in grades 6-12 serve on Teen Advisory Boards to provide input to improve collections, programs and library spaces for young people. Numerous high school seniors fulfill the volunteer requirements of Government and Politics classes in order to graduate. Adults, including many retirees, volunteer at LCL, processing new materials, shelving items and sorting donations.

The Foundation for Lincoln City Libraries was formed in 1954 to provide annual support for the programs and services provided to our residents through Lincoln City Libraries. ServeNebraska is now accepting nominations for the ninth annual Step Forward Awards. The Step Forward Awards celebrates those who volunteer their time and energy toward making Nebraska communities better and are the most prestigious awards given to volunteers in the state.

Award recipients will be selected by Nebraska’s governor and honored at the 2023 Step Forward Awards ceremony in the fall. habitat for humanity’s Kicks off women Build days

Over 50 women from across the Lincoln business community have come together to raise funds to help Lincoln families in need of safe, affordable housing. The Habitat for Humanity of Lincoln Women Build campaign began in September, with all participants agreeing to raise a minimum of $500 and to volunteer on a job site in May.

The Women Builders will be raising hammers and working on two townhomes which means four families will be impacted by the hard work of these amazing and dedicated women. “One of my favorite phrases is “Go Big or Go (Build) Home,” says Habitat’s Development Specialist LaCresha Brooks. “So, when we created this campaign, we wanted to do something that really challenged us. We are so grateful for the support of everyone who has joined us with this exciting project.”

Last month recap

Happy May, friends! We had an amazing month at our Friends4Lunch and Friends4Drinks events. So many of your welcoming faces showed up and you brought your friends! We are so grateful for this community and getting together with Lincoln's best. We had lunch at Mi Tierra's Family Mexican Restaurant and yes, ate far too many chips. The margaritas were the perfect complement to the salty and spicy foods we had. For drinks, we had a fabulous time at Lila Mae's Southern Kitchen. From the first bite of wings to the last bite of Kentucky Butter Cake, we were stuffed to the brim with incredibly tasty food. With their newly opened bar, Lila Mae's has even more reasons to stop by and stay a while.

Last summer, as we launched the strategic planning process that would later outline our Vitality Lincoln plan for the future, I knew talent recruitment would be a key area of focus. While this has been a critical component of our work at the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development for years, challenges remain to connect Lincoln’s business community with the workforce needed for continued success.

In addition to the ongoing demand for trained talent, it is now more important than ever to identify new opportunities to retain current students and the future leaders of our workforce. For today’s young professionals, students and job seekers, place is just as important as opportunity when it comes to making career decisions. Fortunately, we have tremendous assets in Lincoln, making our community an ideal place to live and work, and it is critical that we elevate our efforts to effectively tell that story.

Bierhaus maisschäler: the soon to Be Go to summer Bar

Bierhaus Maisschäler opened its doors seven months ago and has only been gaining popularity since. Bierhaus is the third Kinkaider location in downtown Lincoln. Each Kinkaider spot specializes in a different concept: this time, an authentic German beer hall.

Kinkaider’s newest location, Bierhaus Maisschäler, is a German-style old-world pub. This is Kinkaider’s third location. Kinkaider owns the Kinkaider Taproom on 207 N 7th and Sideshow Spirits at 1630 P St.

Maisschäler translates to ‘corn peeler,’ making Bierhaus Maisschäler the closest translation to The Cornhusker Bar after the Nebraska Huskers football team.

Bierhaus serves a small-limited menu including soft pretzels from a Bavarian Bakehouse in Texas and some German sausage that Bierhaus cases themselves off-site. You won’t find your typical domestic beers here, since they only serve authentic German beer.

“[Our best seller] The Stag, which is our German Pilsner and it’s super light,” Dibbern said. “Sometimes when we have out-oftown fans, from like Oklahoma, they come in and will ask for a Michelob Ultra, a Busch Light, Bud Light or Coors, and we always tell them we have our Stag, German Pilsner and it does the job.”

Walking into Bierhaus Maisschäler transports you to a pub in Germany. Dibbern describes the atmosphere as an old-world pub mixed with a modern American feel.

“When we opened we were in full get up,” Dibbern said. “We were in lederhosen and dirndl and then we started thinking, this may not be the most comfortable for day-to-day.”

Bierhaus offers the Bierklub which is an annual fee but includes your own locker with your name engraved, a bottle of whiskey, a member-exclusive tumbler, and several other monthly perks. Be Bold!

Since joining the team of LIBA in October 2019 I have been fortunate to learn more about our history and how we came to be. Our founders had a vision to be the voice of small business and to be bold in their approach to advocating for small business in Lincoln.

I recently had the good fortune to have a conversation with one of our founding members who talks of how LIBA has evolved since their first meeting. They never imagined what LIBA could grow to be or the impact LIBA may have on policies and laws impacting our local small businesses. Taking time to look back on the growth of LIBA over 43+ years, the founder commented, we were bold and sometimes ruffled some feathers, yet we were always bold. Then, as we concluded our conversation, he told me to Be Bold! I appreciate his words of encouragement and “giving me the keys” to focus our daily efforts and to Be Bold!

Since this conversation, the message of Be Bold has stuck with me. I think of our business owners in Lincoln who have built so many amazing businesses that are employing our friends and neighbors. They have created businesses from a vision to their success today. During their years as business owners, they have experienced great success and great failure, yet they continue to Be Bold! I think of the many business owners and their struggles over the past three years, yet so many of them have evolved and followed the mantra, Be Bold!

I am reminded of business owners who started their business in early 2020 or after. These business owners started a business and the world completely changed in an instant. Yet they were bold in their approach, they persevered, and have “come out the other side” and are having great success.

Sometimes in business, we get so focused on getting through each day, we can serve ourselves to take a step back and decide how we can Be Bold! There are times in business when taking the next step or making a bold move is very scary. We agonize over decisions of how our business may evolve and take on a new project, offer a new service, expand our business, or maybe buy another business. These are tough, bold decision. For a community to grow and evolve, our business community must have a vision for the future. Sometimes this vision will require us to Be Bold!

As we think about the rest of 2023 and look to 2024, I am reminded of some great minds I have been fortunate to work with and their encouragement to think differently, plan differently, or even boldly ask the question, what would you do if money wasn’t an issue. This helps us to think differently and consider changes and evolution in our business to grow and evolve.

Be Bold! Two simple words spoken to me, yet having a strong impact on how I think moving forward. Over the course of the next several months I know it will be a challenge at times to Be Bold. Yet it is incumbent on ourselves to serve our community and our business in a way that we are bold and think to the future.

When we are not prepared, we risk damage to our important investments, which can cause further damage emotionally and financially.

If you live in Nebraska, it is important that you are always prepared for severe weather, too, as we are subject to intense storms during a significant part of the year. Severe storms strike quickly, and thunderstorms produce heavy rain, strong winds, lightning, hail, flooding and tornados. The Danger you Can’t See: UV

Hot and sunny days are ahead of us, which means we are likely to be spending more and more time outdoors. Before you step outside, put on a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes. Dr. Dan Novak from Premier Vision educated us on the dangers that UV rays present.

“Years of research have shown that sun damage from UV rays can lead to earlier cataracts and higher risk for age-related macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of preventable blindness in the U.S.,” Dr. Novak explained. “Not only that, but the skin around the eye is very thin and sensitive. This area is one of the more common areas for skin cancers on the face.”

If those reasons alone don’t get your attention, Dr. Novak also shared that UV damage can cause premature age spots to show up on the eyes and surrounding skin. Even more, we tend to squint when it’s bright out – even if the sun isn’t in our face – which can ultimately result in “crow’s feet,” or wrinkling around the eyes.
