THE WOMAN, WHO BROADENED HORIZONS ... ”There are 360 degrees, so why stick to one?“ Zaha Hadid 2016 has been a year in which (too) many personalities from the worlds of art, culture, politics and society have passed away. People whose life and work have had an informative, even revolutionary impact on our world and how we perceive it. Nothing, however, shocked (not only) the architectural world as much as the death of star architect and designer, Zaha Hadid. BUILDING A NEW WORLD Zaha Hadid transformed the male dominated and superlative seeking world of ”rectangular“ and high-tech architecture ideology. Niall McGarrigle from the Irish Times described her one of the ”Icons of modern architecture“. (Irish Times, 11.05.2016). ”I WANT TO TAKE ON THE WORLD“ Zaha Hadid‘s revolutionary designs and worldwide projects made it possible for us all to enjoy a new, dynamic and animated experience of all rooms, spaces, perspectives, proportions, dimensions, light and shadow. “I like to see rooms that are not closed, ones that have no pre-determined direction, open up new avenues, stimulate movement“, explained Zaha Hadid in an interview with DIE ZEIT (14.06.2006) in a rejection of clear programmes and the ideologies of classical modernism. “I want lines to flow smoothly, soft and moving.

I do not seek one-size-fits-all solutions, but new forms.“ It took until 1991, however, for “England‘s most hated architect“ (quote: Times, London) to be commissioned for her first major project, the Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein, Germany, with a design that put to rest any lingering accusations that Zaha was a paper architect, and her designs, unbuildable. The starting point for an incredible career

during which she fascinated and impressed the architectural world with radically new design concepts. RETROSPECTIVE IN VENICE Fondazione Berengo are hosting a retrospective exhibition of Zaha Hadid’s work and life in the Palazzo Franchetti on the Grand Canal in Venice until 27th November 2016. An absolute must, not only for architecture and design enthusiasts.
