A Resolution You Can Keep in 2011

By Douglas Knight Executive Director ew Year’s: a new set of resolutions to break in about five-four-three-

two-one-NOW. Each year, I think to myself that this is the year when I will make that promise that will last. We all have those go-to lists: losing weight, eating better, starting up that hobby you always wanted to try, quitting smoking.

How about one that is guaranteed to be successful? Try this one on for size: volunteering.

The win-win in volunteering is enormous. The return on investment? Off the charts. The feeling you get after knowing that your time and talent were used for a fantastic cause? Priceless. (You’re welcome, MasterCard).

There are a ton of fantastic organizations here in Washington that make a difference each and every day, whether it is a public charter school like VSA D.C.’s School for Arts in Learning or an employment and food preparation place like DC Central Kitchen, or any of the other groups dealing in children/youth issues, homelessness, education or the arts.

The possibilities are nearly endless.

The key is you and your willingness to give up some of your time. Your efforts are truly appreciated and, believe me, you will feel such a rush of pride inside. It is the best way to ring in the New Year.

So today, as you read our fantastic stories here in this issue of Street Sense authored by our incredible vendors and dedicated staff and volunteers, take a second to consider how you might get more involved. Interested in writing?

Canadian Entrepreneur Overcomes Homelessness Canada’s Max Eden is a self-taught architect in Toronto. While that is impressive, more so is that Eden, 43, had to start sleeping under stairwells and under railway bridges starting at age 15, the Toronto Star reports. Eden decided to leave his adoptive mother’s home, quit school and wound up eating out of trash bins on more than one occasion.

“One winter I broke into a guy’s van every night and slept in it until I got caught,” he says. “You don’t know what cold is until you can’t even cry because it’s so cold.”

But Eden didn’t let hard times get him down. By 21, he had managed to end his roughly five-year ordeal with off-again, on-again homelessness. Since ending his life on the streets, Eden has owned a café, a small gallery and a printing business. He recently opened the Jam Spot, a place for musicians to practice in ideal conditions.

Now, Eden offers support to teen moms and urges people visiting the Jam Spot to donate to local food banks.

“Friends say, ‘Look at you now,’ ” he told the Toronto Star. “My brother says he now actually tells people that we’re brothers. He says he’s proud.”

‘Stand Down’ Offers Outreach to Veterans Over 400 area homeless veterans are expected to gather at the VA Medical Center on Saturday, Jan. 22, for the Winterhaven Homeless Stand Down, an annual one-stop outreach event designed to bring warm clothing, care and services to needy men and women who have served in the military.

In addition to gently used and drycleaned coats and jackets, veterans will be offered medical screenings, including HIV testing and prostate exams as well as flu and pneumonia vaccinations, ophthalmology, podiatry, oral health checkups and women’s health consultations.

Employment support will be offered by the U.S. Department of Labor, the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Services and the D.C. Coalition for the Homeless. Staff from the Veterans Benefits Administration, and Veterans Service Organizations will assist with VA benefits claims.

Chaplain services will be provided, as well as haircuts and a large, holiday-style meal. The VA Medical Center will provide free transportation to veterans staying at local shelters. The event will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the medical center located at 50 Irving Street NW.

Homeless Veteran Numbers on the Rise in Alabama

News in Brief

A census taken by a non-profit group that monitors the homeless population in Alabama shows that the number of homeless veterans along the coast is on the rise, the Press-Register reports.

The group, Housing First, conducted the census in November released the results at the end of December. Of the 336 veterans who participated in the census, 152 reported them as homeless, a striking 85 percent increase over the number from two years ago.

Bill Atkeison, secretary of the South Alabama Veterans Council, says that almost all veterans advocacy groups have reported increases in homelessness among members, a problem that has coincided with two simultaneous wars and the sluggish economy back home.

“That’s what happens when you send people to war,” Atkeison told the PressRegister. “When they come back, they need things. They need help.

“We live in the greatest nation on Earth. This is the best place to be, and it is that way because of our military. The veterans deserve and need whatever help we can give them.”

HUD Investigation Criticizes D.C.’s Housing Fund Usage

The Washington Post reports that a federal audit has put into question more than $10 million in spending by D.C.’s housing agency, which has led to the return of about $1.6 million of the Department of Housing and Urban Development grant funds.

An audit, released Dec. 23, pinpointed nearly $1.7 million in costs that the D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) had incorrectly charged to the federal government. Additionally, $6.5 million in expenses did not meet the auditors’ satisfaction, and $1.9 million went unspent or were poorly spent, the Washington Post reported.

City officials say the issues are being addressed.“We knew that there were issues when I first started. There were things in the relationship with HUD that had to be worked on,” Leila Finucane Edmonds, DHCD’s outgoing director, told the Post. “We have moved the department to a very different place.”

The $1.6 million slated to be returned will be used for other projects in the District.

Gray Promises to Unify Wards

The District of Columbia’s new mayor has his work cut out for him in convincing homeless Washingtonians of his resolve to improve their lives. In his inaugural address on Sunday to a room of hundreds at the Washington Convention Center, Vincent C. Gray stressed his commitments to unifying the city and providing more opportunities for its residents.

However, Gray and the returning City Council face the thorny tasks of successfully managing the city’s ailing budget while simultaneously reducing expenditures and improving D.C.’s social services network.

Although some homelessness advocates worry that funds to fight homelessness make an easy target for budget cuts, they hope that Gray’s background in social services will help their cause.

Gray was director of the D.C. Department of Human Services under Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly in the early ‘90s and later was executive director of Covenant House Washington, which serves homeless and at-risk youth. He was elected in 2004 as a councilmember to

represent Ward 7 and became chairman two years later.

“Now is the time for all of us to be moved by a spirit of service at the community and neighborhood level, and to help build our city,” Gray said in prepared remarks after taking the oath.

“It’s no use. They’re not going to do anything,” she said. “I’m just trying to get by on my own.”

But along with the mayor, at least one councilmember is determined to change that perception.

“I have faith that this council and this government -- while we’re figuring out how to raise resources and how to make

government more efficient -- has foremost in our minds those least able to speak for themselves,” Councilmember Jim Graham said in prepared remarks.

Graham, who has represented Ward 1 since 1998 and formerly served as executive director of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, was re-elected in November and is taking over as chairman of the Committee on Human Services.

His first action in that role will be to visit the city’s primary shelters this month to assess conditions, he told Street Sense.

“I want to get a one-on-one understanding of what’s going on there,” he said. “I think it’s very important that I do so.” Graham will also focus on a new single-room occupancy shelter in Columbia Heights and management of the city’s public nursing homes and Department on Disability Services.

Gray ended his address by reiterating his campaign theme of city togetherness.

“From Friendship Heights to Columbia Heights to Lincoln Heights to Congress Heights, this is one city -- our city,” he said. “From Fort Lincoln to Lincoln Park, this is one city -- our city.”

A Death on a Dark Road

Sharon Kelcha’s tormented wanderings came to an end in the darkness of Dec. 12.

At 2:30 a.m., the 55-year-old woman, with no fixed address, was struck and killed by a car as she crossed the Anacostia Freeway, according to a District police report.

Kelcha grew up in Pittsburgh in a troubled home and suffered from severe mental illness for much of her life, according to her sister, Tina Hiteshew, a nurse who still lives in that city.

“She was becoming delusional, paranoid. She wanted to talk to the President, so she came to Washington,” said Hiteshew.

Kelcha’s was one of the 44 names read at a Dec. 21 vigil remembering homeless people who died in and around the District in 2010. The 21st Annual National Homeless Persons’ Memorial observance drew a small but devoted crowd to the trampled snow outside the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Northwest Washington.

As candles shuddered in the cold wind, the Voices of the Streets, a choir of homeless men and women, sang “Amazing Grace.” Amid the sounds of traffic on the busy downtown corner, the names of the dead were read by Steve Thomas, of the National Coalition for the Homeless’ Faces of Homelessness Speakers’ Bureau.

The service was organized by the National Coalition for the Homeless and coordinated, in more than 150 cities around the country.

ies show that hypothermia and exposure claim surprisingly few lives compared to acute and chronic medical conditions, according to a 2005 review of scientific literature conducted by the National Health Care for the Homeless Council. Substance abuse and mental illness also increased the risk of death, the study found.

“The average age of death in the studies reviewed is between 42 and 52 years, despite an average life expectancy of almost 80 years in this country,” the review concluded.

Disabling conditions, including mental illness, continue among the District’s homeless residents, according to the 2010 Homeless Enumeration conducted by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. In the District, 23 percent of literally homeless adults, those with no permanent supportive housing, reported mental health issues. Of the 6,539 homeless men women and children counted, 567 reported suffering from severe mental illness.

So did Kelcha. She worked a variety of jobs, including a stint in a cafeteria. Her difficult marriage ended with the death of her husband about six years ago. Hiteshew said she tried to help her sister but it was not easy. There were limits to what her family was able to do.

“A couple of years ago, she came to my steps. She wanted a shower,” Hiteshew recalled. “‘I said ‘I’m gonna help you.

Let’s go to church.’ I ran to get my shoes.

She was gone.”

Later, Kelcha turned up at a neighbor’s house, pounding on the door begging, “Why won’t you let me in?”

She lived for awhile at a residential facility for people with disabilities in Pittsburgh before making her way to Washington last summer, according to Hiteshew.

Mental health workers and advocates say that the District holds a unique attraction for some in the throes of mental illness, who are drawn here in search of redress from the federal government or an audience with the President.

In Washington, Kelcha received care at the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program, or CPEP, which offers psychiatic services, mobile crisis services and observation beds in a facility located at D.C. General Hospital, Hiteshaw.

“I don’t know if she was leaving that

unit when she was walking on the highway,” she said. A staff person at CPEP said she was not able to confirm or deny that Kelcha was there, due to patient confidentiality rules.

Kelcha was struck by a southbound Toyota Camry while walking in the middle of the freeway in Southeast Washington.

The driver and a passenger stayed on the scene, according to police, who identified the driver as Brian Mitchell Blake, 24, of Fort Washington Md. No charges have been filed in the case, but police are continuing to investigate, according to the office of the United State Attorney.

“I feel terrible for the young man who hit her,” said Hiteshew. “I’m not saying my sister wasn’t at fault. She shouldn’t have been walking in the highway. But she was in pain.”

The deinstitutionalization movement that began in earnest decades ago placed the spotlight on poor conditions and inhumane treatment in mental institutions and gave rise to policies that emphasized upon community-centered housing and care for the mentally ill. As the result of a lawsuit dating back to 1974, the city’s Department of Mental Health is required to report to the U.S. District Court on the progress it has made in providing community-based treatment alternatives to hospitalization for people with mental illness. The mandate is a complex one.

Affordable housing and other resources have often been been lacking, and the needs of each patient are different.

“The challenge is striking the right balance between individual civil liberties and the need for appropriate care,” said Scott McNeilly, staff attorney for the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless. “There isn’t a one-size fits all approach.”

Permanent supportive housing has been hailed as a solution for getting people with a range of disabilities off the streets, out of emergency shelters and into safe places. An estimated 1,200 people are currently housed in supportive housing units, scattered around the city through the District’s program, but many more remain homeless and the city’s budget is severely strained, McNeilly said. The emphasis is upon “holding ground, not losing units.”

reflected upon efforts by the Obama Administration and 19 government agencies to move forward with a federal strategic plan to end homelessness.

“Tonight is a night of remembrance and affirmation,” added Donovan. Standing in the darkness on the first night of winter, the longest night of the year, the housing secretary tried to strike a note of hope.

By Michael Dawson Why oh why am I winding and tumbling in the angry tides, battered ties, lonely but angry sad green eyes, villain am I not, I’m a saint who does living danger, serious vanity in well-seamed forms, may have good touch, but those angry waters rip me out inside carrying that lonely lie, each tear I cry, brings the anger, my heart and soul feels dead, banging my head, unforgotten dread, trying to thread what good is left within.

Forever with those deep blue tides, my green eyes lie in the strong tides, loneliness resides, I’m hoping to silence the demon within and awaken the angel I think is somewhere within.

Leaving the battered angry past behind, with hopes and dreams of tomorrow. I hope my soul will last forever and make peace silencing the monster that still resides within. In the city of angels is where I’ll reside, floating around in happier tides.

Blacker than the pot For sure, for me to take issue With a fellow prisoner and poet Over a bag of lost toiletries. I Lose things: A name, an identity, a pair of pinking shears, A lawnmower, a raison d’etre, a nation, A universe, an entire Biblical people Full of pride and trust. Mea culpa, But while we’re at it, if it is true at all That the putative pot did once call the aforementioned kettle black, If these housemaidens are to be believed in the least, What did the kettle say in return? If The right hand doesn’t know what the left hand Is doing, what does the left hand know?

It all? Or only everything? This, by the way, Is the sound of one hand clapping: whupwhupwhup— My sorry bad self bitch-slapping you Across the yard for reasons.

Milkshake, indeed.

Return to the sheep, as the French, for Reasons so inscrutably theirs, sometimes say.

We needn’t confuse an adage with a cliché: The one is good for being tired with, the Other has been known to open tin cans in a pinch. Cliff Carle: The

8 The family and friends of Street Sense vendor, martial artist, philosopher, mathematician, homeless advocate and photographer Cliff Carle celebrate his life and mourn his passing on December 21.

Cliff was a familiar and cheerful presence selling his papers outside Trader Joe’s market in Foggy Bottom. Lean and sinewy with an impish smile, he spoke with a gruff voice, walked with a cane and was often seen with his cherished camera swinging from around his neck. He took literally thousands of photographs, many of which appeared in Street Sense over the years.

His images captured the strange and sometimes surreal beauty of Washington’s fountains, monuments and street life.

Cliff died of cancer at George Washington University Medical Center, according to his older sister, Eudora Carle, a teacher here in Washington.

“I’m ready to go,” he said. “I’m gonna braid your hair,” she told him. When he passed away, “he looked like a samurai asleep,” she said.

15, 1949, a self-described Army brat whose family moved often. He spent part of his childhood in France and loved photography from an early age. He graduated from high school in Springof the District of Columbia. At one point in his life he used hard drugs but spent his later years in recovery.

“He made choices based on his struggle with his life,” said his younger sister, Tanya GibsonClark, a choreographer from South Orange, N.J. “He chose his way back.” She called Cliff her hero.

He was also a practicing vegan and a black belt in martial arts.

In a 2008 Street Sense said he became homeless on July 4, 2005. “I was taking a shower and the sheriff came into my house and said I was being evicted. He said I didn’t pay the rent but I knew I had. Turns out the landlord hadn’t been paying the rent so I got kicked out. On July 8 I got hit by a car and on the 11th I lost my job.”

Cliff spent his last years sleeping at the shelter run by the Community for Creative Non-Violence, which he jokingly called “the Ponderosa.” calm.

He did not want anyone to cry for him, his sister Eudora said. Cliff leaves behind three sisters, a son, a daughter and grandchildren.

Sunrise

Sunrise over the South China Sea. It’s about 0600 hours. I’ve had a long, hot night. The bugs were out, and so was the enemy. Looking at the sunrise over that sea, it’s difficult sometimes to tell where the steely blue sky began and the crystal blue water ends. It was majestic, to say the least, looking now at a formation of choppers flying in from the west. Just in from the U.S., flying very low just beyond the water. And of course, behind the choppers was the beautiful sunrise. It’s like a huge fireball burning eternally. That was the sunrise I remember the most along the South China Sea.

The Open-Air Museum

I pause upon the Memorial Bridge, opening to the historical outdoor museum, sprawling in glorious wonder, with moon and stars shining above.

Central to this museum of memorials is our first leader in war and politics and his tall, thin monument, pointing to the stars in true Masonic fashion.

Behind me is land formerly owned by the leader of the strife that tore our nation in bitter conflict and now holds graves honoring these heroes who fought for principles so dear, as well as those who followed in later years, having fought in wars across the sea with weapons that seem to have fallen from the stars.

Before me is a monument to a leader who worked tirelessly to reunite a nation during the bloody division, himself remembered as a fallen hero and memorialized as one of our nation’s stars.

Another memorial stands not far from our first leader’s obelisk and proudly displays the results of a massive war sending our heroes across two oceans, joining with the gallant knights of our mother country as well as the other brave heroes defending their homeland in the the bitterly cold north, to assail and bring down two firebreathing dragons with all the might we could muster. This memorial to the no-holds-barred struggle stands tall and proud in this historical open-air museum beneath the stars.

A short distance from the man in the chair, you find another monument to fallen heroes from a more recent era in spite of another division of our citizens, as bitter as the bloody feud a century earlier. These stars are individually remembered.

In the future, more memorials for the recent fallen heroes need to be erected, of course. But how about a new type of memorial for the people who will finally raise the banners of peace for ages to come?

That memorial would mark the end of war and the beginning of the adventure to the stars.

2010: Ten Things to be Grateful for

By Jeffrey McNeil Vendor The last few holidays have been depressing; I was staying in a shelter with no family or friends. But, as my journal reflects, 2010 was a very good year. I had joyous moments, accomplishments and periods of tranquility, along with blunders, errors and setbacks. Through it all, I took life in stride and accepted the cards that I was dealt.

Ten things:

1. Being printed in The Washingtonian.

I am grateful for the editors from The Washingtonian who read my articles and published them. Sometimes fate and luck lead to opportunity; it is hard to believe that three years ago I was sleeping in tunnels, penniless and unemployed. I never believed that writing was my calling. Now, I think it may be. And this year I look forward to even greater opportunities and recognition for writing.

2. Being selected to the board of directors at Street Sense. I’d like to thank Street Sense founders Ted Henson and Laura Thompson Osuri as well as former executive director Abby Strunk for giving me an opportunity to change my life and be of service to the Street Sense board by sharing my experience on vendor-related issues.

3. Being invited to speak at the Sixth and I Synagogue. I felt so honored to be asked to speak here. I appreciated being allowed to preside on Pesach, reading scriptures from the Torah in Hebrew. Better yet, however, are all the new friends I made whom I still see when selling the paper.

4. The love and support I receive from customers, family and friends. I cannot mention all those who have helped me. I

get tears of joy from all the gifts and cards people sent me. It gives me enjoyment when someone thinks of me and considers me in their thoughts. I hope that one day I will be able to give back to those who helped me and are still helping me get on my feet.

5. Being sober for one year. I am most grateful for not being high or drunk today.

I believe the cornerstone of any success starts with not using substances. Since I stopped drinking, I have had a wonderful year where I have friends who tell me about their battles with alcohol and drugs.

And, although I had a year of sobriety, I do not rest on my laurels. This journey has taught me that sobriety is a daily struggle. And that life happens in inches not leaps.

6. The Street Sense Auction. This year’s auction was impressive. Since I started coming to it in August 2007, it has been awesome to see how big Street Sense has grown. I hope our growth will continue for years to come.

7. Recognition as November’s top-selling vendor. I give thanks to all those who regularly buy the paper from me. I feel joy that my hard work has finally paid off.

I hope that this year I can pass the mantle to another vendor while I look for other pursuits. I believe in challenges. And I look forward to what life will bring me.

8. Speaking to youth groups and participating in “Vendor For a Day.” There is nothing more enjoyable than educating youth groups about homelessness. Children are the advocates of tomorrow. Seeing young people with concern and passion makes me hopeful about the fight against poverty.

9. Good health. I praise God that I am over 40 and that I have only minor health problems. I hope to have many more years of good health. No matter how badly things turn out emotionally, I am grateful and realize things can be a lot worse.

10. Not being in a shelter. After being in and out of shelters, I wouldn’t wish that on anybody. I feel like I have been pardoned from a prison sentence. To have my own place. To shower and at the same time come and go as I wish is indescribable.

Vendor of the Month

By Mandy Toomey Volunteer Growing up, Street Sense vendor Philip Howard loved to joke around with his guardian mother while she baked warm, fluffy biscuits. He would pretend someone was at the front door, and before she realized the stoop outside was empty, Philip would grab a biscuit and run out the back door.

This guardian family raised Philip until the start of his teenage years. Then at age 14, Philip went to live with his real mother, whom he says he never understood very well. Philip went on the run for two months when he was 17. He was unable to return to the guardian mother’s house because she had passed away.

Philip says, “I just wanted to go back and see everybody.” In addition to bouncing between the guardian’s home and his mothers, Philip spent time in two children’s centers in Laurel, Maryland: Maple Glen and Cedar North.

Growing up around Washington, D.C., Philip has seen many changes in the district. But the most notable was the elec-

tion of President Barack Obama, “People said it would never happen, but I say you never know.” Although Philip doesn’t always understand the partisanship of Washington politics, he enjoys seeing the different flows of people in the various parts of the city and the history of the area.

Philip’s favorite place in the city is the movies, where he likes to go when he has some money. He even has a membership to Regal Cinemas.

Over the years, Philip has worked many odd jobs around the city including construction, maintenance, food service, groundskeeping, window washing, painting and plastering. At one point, Philip even worked on the water supply for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

In 1981, Philip began to create his own family by marrying a woman from South America. Three years later, she traveled to her home country and never returned.

In 1998, Philip’s son, by a different woman, was born at Howard University Hospital, a moment Philip calls his proudest. Tragically, at age 6, Philip’s son

contracted meningitis from a classmate and died.

Three years before his son’s death, Philip’s daughter was born. Although his daughter lives with her mother’s family, today Philip is able to spend time with her frequently.

While his past has undeniably colored his present, these days Philip feels it is important to “forget about the past and look to the future,” which for Philip includes spending more time with his daughter. As he looks forward to all that lies ahead, Philip would like to leave readers with the following message: “Be safe. Love life, because it’s a precious jewel.”

The Story of Street Sense Street Sense began in August 2003 after two volunteers, Laura Thompson Osuri and Ted Henson, approached the National Coalition for the Homeless on separate occasions with the idea to start a street paper in Washington, D.C., as a means of empowering the area’s poor and homeless.

A street paper is a newspaper about poverty, homelessness and other social issues which provides an income to the homeless individuals who sell it. More than 30 street papers operate in the United States and Canada,

including in cities like Seattle, Chicago, Montreal and Boston. Dozens more exist throughout the world.

After bringing together a core of dedicated volunteers, Street Sense published its first issue in November 2003, printing 5,000 copies.

About a dozen vendors sold the first issue of the paper. For the next three years, it published on a monthly basis and greatly expanded its circulation and vendor network.

Street Sense initially operated as a project of the National Coalition for the Homeless. In

October 2004, the organization incorporated and moved into its own office space. In March 2005, Street Sense received 501(c)3 status, becoming a nonprofit organization.

In October 2005, Street Sense formed a full board of directors, and in November, the organization hired its first employee, a full-time executive director. A year later, Street Sense hired its first vendor coordinator and began partnering with several service providers.

In February 2007, the paper increased the frequency of publication to twice a month.

In order to support the increased production, Street Sense brought on its first full-time editor-in-chief in April.

Street Sense is a member of the National Association of Street Newspapers (NASNA).

YOUR DOLLAR Every vendor makes a personal investment in Street Sense by purchasing issues at a rate of 35 cents per copy. This money helps cover our production and printing costs for the paper, while still enabling the vendors to sell the paper at a low price and substantial profit.

Community Service Service Spotlight: Bread for the City Food, clothing, medical care, legal services and social services: When the folks at Bread for the City say “comprehensive,” they mean it.

Founded in 1974, Washington, D.C.based Bread for the City provides the above services to needy area residents in “an atmosphere of dignity and respect,” according to its website. All services are free of cost to eligible D.C. residents, and Bread for the City estimates it helps more than 10,000 people each month. The non-profit also promotes collaboration with community partners.

Last month, Bread for the City completed the expansion of its Northwest Center. The $6.8 million project more than doubles the size of the original facility, and features a new medical clinic.

than three times the care,” said Greg Bloom, Bread for the City communications manager, of the new medical center.

Bread for the City also operates a Southeast Center.

The organization will spend 2011 settling into its new digs, and plans to add a rooftop garden to the new facility.

Carrying Street News to NC

“This is what I love. Do it!” These thoughts ran through my head in midJuly when I was six weeks into my editorial internship at Street Sense. Working here taught me the power of words and how they can be used for social change in a community. More than five months ago, I wrote in this same column, “I am leaving this internship experience with hope. These are not the last words I will write because I plan to continue using my writing talents to educate the public on social issues that are related to homelessness and poverty.”

The positive experience I had at Street Sense and the hope of the hard-working vendors encouraged me to follow my passion and create a street newspaper in North Carolina, where I am a student at Elon University.

Before I left my internship, Eric Falquero, a former graphic design intern, and I met with Street Sense’s co-founder, Ted Henson. We hoped to absorb his wisdom about the process of creating Street Sense. Thanks to his knowledge and Street Sense’s support for our endeavors, Eric created The Huntington Pulse, a street newspaper in Huntington, W.V., and I co-founded The New Greensboro Voice in Greensboro, N.C. Am I crazy for using my limited knowledge of street newspapers to create a

grassroots-level newspaper in a North Carolina city? Maybe. But every great accomplishment starts with an idea and passion.
