There are only a few small supermarkets in Ayacucho, and they primarily offer packaged foods such as yogurt, milk, crackers and sweets. For fresh food or other supplies, people head to the markets. Most markets are held in large market buildings clustered in one zone of the city, surrounded by smaller shops offering goods or services not readily available in the markets.
