Welcome to our Late Summer-Early Fall print edition of The Corridor As you will no doubt notice, in this issue we are including events and stories to cover August, September and October of 2018. Our cover for this issue is a composite of the efforts of several artists from Zuni Pueblo. Dowa Yalanne, or Corn Mountain, a sacred site on Zuni Pueblo, was photographed by Zuni artist and photographer Jeff Shetima. The colorful border on the left side is an orignal creation of Zuni artist and painter Keith Edaakie. The images of artwork were photographed by Jeff Shetima and Zuni photographer Carle Eustace. The artwork represents everything from a hand carved wooden bench by Davis Coonsis, graceful zuni pottery, distinctive jewelry, to carvings and fetishes, including a “Ski Bunny” by Waldo Davis.

Our feature story this month introduces the art and artists of the Zuni Pueblo ArtWalk. The ArtWalk showcases the works of these artists on three formal Studio Tour events; one in the Spring, one in the Summer and one in the Fall.

From mid-August through the end of October we once again see a cascade of art events occuring in our state. Hardly a weekend goes by that does not feature one to several events, leaving the art lover with the challenge of planning weekends around all the events - a happy challenge, certainly. And of course there is the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, taking place this year from October 6 - 15, plus a cowboy gathering, Sunflower Festival, Chile Festival, a Motorcycle Rally and a Classic Motorcycle show, Storytelling Festivals, Fiber Fiesta, Duke City marathon, and the 5th annual Pueblo Film Festival.

Our feature story in this edition of The Corridor will introduce you

to the art and artists of the 2018 Zuni Pueblo ArtWalk Studio Tours.

Here we present a portion of the Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway.

This scenic loop includes two New Mexico Native American Pueblos, Acoma and Zuni, as well as two National Monuments, a 70+ year old roadside attraction featuring ancient natural wonders, and a historic western town that is synonymous with the wild west, Native America, and the old “Route 66” - all still flourishing in the 21st century.

Acoma Pueblo

The Inscription Trail A must–see! If you only have an hour or less, you will definitely want to take the trail to the pool and past hundreds of Spanish and Anglo inscriptions, as well as pre–historical petroglyphs.

Atsinna Another reward for hiking the Headland Trail is the Ancestral Puebloan ruin, Atsinna, or “place of writings on rock”. Between approximately 1275 to 1350 AD, up to 1500 people lived in this 875 room pueblo. The location was strategic—it was near the only water source for many miles and located atop a nearly impenetrable bluff. Atsinna was partially excavated in the 1950s and masons and archeologists continue to work towards its stabilization.”

Most of Zuni’s residents live in the main village of Zuni and the nearby “suburb” community of Blackrock. Zuni is a sovereign, self-governed nation with our own constitutional government, courts, police force, school system, and economic base. Our year is marked by a cycle of traditional ceremonial activities; the most sacred and perhaps the most recognized is the annual Sha’lak’o event.”

Artists of Zuni Pueblo invite you to take a walk through their world and into their studios to discover the beauty and magic of their very special artworks and the majestic surroundings from which they draw their artistic and spiritual inspirations and passion. story by Marc-Paul LaRouche

The magical land of Zuni Pueblo, located approximately 37 miles south

of Gallup, New Mexico on the Zuni reservation, is home and inspiration to an ever-growing number of accomplished Zuni artists and artisans.

These artists have banded together to form their own Artists’ Studio Tours, known as the Zuni Pueblo ArtWalk. The group sponsors 3 public events each year; a Spring, Summer and Fall formal ArtWalk studio tour. In addition, artists typically open their studios each weekend (with the exception of certain special religious events) to visitors of the Pueblo (see blue inset this page).

We recently visited the Pueblo of Zuni after contacting the organizers of the Zuni Artwak to meet the artists in their studios and learn more about the Studio Tours and the environment in which these artists live and work. We were afforded the opportunity to film candid interviews with several of the artists who participate on the Tours. Zuni photographers Jeff Shetima and Carle Eustace set up their gear in the Zuni Visitor Center to take photos of representative pieces of artwork by tour artists.

Many of these pieces will be part of a silent auction to help the group raise funds for their ArtWalk promotional efforts.

Working with Jeff Shetima, Carle Eustace, the Visitor Center staff and the amazing artists on this tour was a true pleasure and a very gratifying experience. In a day and a half we learned a great deal about the artists, their beginnings making art and their backgrounds as artists. The artists shared their mediums and some of their methods for creating stunning fine art; often steeped in their traditions, while looking ever forward by using newfound materials and processes to refine and hone their craft.

While many of these artists work with traditional materials and methods, some have extended their reach by utilizing new materials to achieve a different look and feel for their works while maintaining old-world aesthetic and authenticity.

“Zuni Pueblo has always been welcoming to visitors who come into our community to learn more about our people and culture, and to purchase arts and crafts from our talented Zuni artisans and businesses along Zuni Pueblo MainStreet. As a multi-faceted community, there are many things that visitors to Zuni can partake in at various times of the year.

One such artist is Carlton Jamon, who has traditional-

ly worked with silver as a metal medium, but lately has begun to use materials such as titanium to expand the horizons of his offerings. Another amazing process utilized by Mr. Jamon is his silver hollowware. To create these pieces he forms the works in halves that are created with a sheet of silver molded to a form, then solders the pieces together into a three dimensional finished work. The result is a very delicate, lightweight artpiece with the look of solid silver and the refinement of fine blown glass. Carlton’s finish work defies explanation - he has often challenged others - even silver artists - to find the seams of his solder work.

While he no longer offers that challenge, we were astounded just the same by the “seamless” nature of his finished pieces.

The first recommended stop is the Zuni Visitor Center, where you can obtain general information about our unique community and learn proper visitor etiquette, purchase photo/video permits, and inquire about the Zuni Pueblo ArtWalk. Visitors are welcome to sign up for tours of our historic Middle Village, considered the oldest part of Zuni Pueblo. More intrepid visitors can sign up to visit the ancestral village of Hawikku, where European explorers to the “New World” first made contact with the A:shiwi in 1539. Or some may be interested in visiting the Village of the Great Kivas, believed to be a Chacoan outlier. For more information on additional tours and pricing call the Visitors Center at (505) 782-7238.

Many of Zuni Pueblo’s events are open to the public, and photography of these events and scenery is usually allowed with a valid photo permit. However, please note that whenever religious dances and activities are occurring in the Middle Village area, photography is forbidden and no photo permits will be issued. Visitor Center staff can advise you accordingly.

Eldrick and Charlotte work together from their humble household in their hometown of Zuni, crafting lustrous contemporary in-lay jewelry as well as needle-point jewelry. Through hard work, trial and error, and proficiency gained over time, Eldrick and Charlotte reached a point of blissful enjoyment in what they create.

Artistic inspirations for me began at an early age, I would watch my parents (Anderson and Avelia Peynetsa) create pottery. As an artist, I work hard to develop pottery that speaks both to me and others about the beauty that exists here in Zuni.

Working with various paints and materials have taught them that there is a story behind each and every piece they create.

“Keshi! Hi I am Chris Gchachu and I am known to have some very interesting bear fetishes, my innovative style was developed by adopting stone carving and the use of other precious stones and organic material. My bears carry spears with fish, bow and arrows, and other unique items.”

Duran Gasper was born on the Zuni Indian Reservation in 1965. Duran was born into the Bear and child of an Eagle clan. Duran entered the world of art as a painter, and learned how to paint with acrylic, water colors and oils in High school. Duran’s goals are to venture into oneof-a-kind pieces and anything out of the norm.

present Trading Post (also gift shop and museum) was built in the 1930s, along with a saloon and dance hall.

At the time, the Zuni Mountain Railroad was operating and the logging industry was in full swing. They kept their beer cold using ice from the Ice Cave. In 1946, Dave and Reddy Candelaria arrived and began operations as a tourist attraction.

Dave Candelaria was an early

adopter and proponent of the promotion of tourism in New Mexico. In 1997 Dave was elected to the New Mexico Toursim Hall of Fame. Today, Dave's daughter Debbie (Candelaria) Reinschmidt and other family members run this family business much as it was run in the 1940s.

I recently visited the Santa Fe studio of artist Cheri O’Brien, whose artwork graced our cover in the June-July issue of The Corridor (“Miss Mabel Picks a Pony”).

We had agreed

to shoot a candid video interview with her in her studio. When I arrived at her place, located on Canyon Alley off Canyon Road in Santa Fe, I spied a very colorful papier mache on her desk which turned out to be the subject of our video that day.

In

this video Cheri talks about the construction of the sculpture, the types of paint she uses, a little about her technique and how she chose to make this particular art piece.

Later,

as I explored and photographed her compact yet comfortable studio, I observed the variety of styles and subjects that are the inspiration for her artwork. Cheri’s work is in many collections and public spaces across the U.S.

contemporary narrative artist Cheri O’Brien is a self-taught artist drawing since the age of five. Creating singular works of art, Ms. O’Briens seemingly casual aesthetic shifts emphasis from outrageous and funky to tender and charming.

Re-creating child like images with recurring motifs such as dogs, stuffed animals, flowers and religious iconography O’Brien attempts to understand her world with finding humor in beauty and the beauty of humor. The reknown translator, Reg Keeland, of “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” fame is one of her most prolific collectors. For the past 10 years, she has entered the public art realm creating fused painted glass commissions and in 2009 was awarded an $110,000 Community Transit commission consisting of 160’ of work was created out of concrete. September 23, 2018 will mark the seventh an-

nual Motorado Classic Motorcycle Show. As in years past we have featured a particular marque or show theme and this year is no exception. The spotlight this year is on the Motorcycles of Italy. Italy has a long and storied history in the manufacturing of some of the world’s most beautiful two wheeled machines. You will see offerings from Moto-Guzzi, Ducati. Laverda, MV Agusta and Benelli. As with any country there were numerous small manufacturers, many springing up across post war Europe, some had existed before the war and resumed building during reconstruction. In the years following WWII, Italy spawned no less than 220 new motorcycle manufacturers. Some of these “boutique” builders created some truly interesting machines. While some of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers are Italian, the real golden age of Italian motorcycles didn’t really kick off until after WWII. In the years before WWII , Italy’s primary motorcycle manufacturers built bikes as a sideline; Benelli mainly produced guns. Laverda specialized in agricultural machinery. Piaggio originally built trains and railway carriages. However, after WWII, Italy was faced with a desperate need

for mobility and small capacity motorcycles for the masses seemed to be the obvious solution. Unfortunately, Italy was left in dire economic straits after the war. Despite financial constraints, Italy’s engineers wouldn’t let the lack of money stand in the way of styling perfection and design elegance. Using manufacturing skills honed in war and with the promise of a brighter future, the Italian motorcycle industry was reborn and with gusto. The Italian motorcycle has become synonymous with well-engineered, stylish “objet d’ art with unparalleled beauty.

This year’s show will also have many other class-

es of motorcycles beyond the Italian bikes. We have classes for just about anything and everyone. There will also be live riding demonstrations, local motorcycle dealers and craftsmen. Food and drink will be available on site as well as numerous merchants displaying their wares. So whether you have a classic motorcycle to display or simply just want a day looking at motorcycling’s past, come on out, we have what you’re looking for. A candid interview with James Navé, director of the Taos Storytelling Festival. The interview took place on Monday, July 9, 2018. by Marc LaRouche How did you get involved in storytelling ?

“I started my experience in the spoken word arena when I went to the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesboro, Tennessee in 1981.

That was the 9th annual National Storytelling Festival. When I was first there I saw storytellers on stage, some of whom I still know.

At the time I had been starting to memorize poems. I realized that there was a possibility for telling poetry in the same way that one told stories. I combined forces with another fellow and we created a team of poetry tellers.”

“I continued on for years as a performance poet working in the School arena, going around doing shows in auditoriums with a business called “Poetry Alive”.

We had teams of performers who went out and perfomed poetry for school kids..”

“Along the way I became involved in the poetry slam, the spoken word movement, and was basically involved in the language arts movement and the spoken word movement from the late ‘80s until now. In 1997, I was here in Taos. I was working with a woman named Julia Cameron who wrote a book called “The Artist’s Way”. We were running Artists’ Way Creativity Camps here. The Creativity Camps were just that: camps for adults to come to and wallow in creative things for a week. People tend to have very busy lives and they don’t make room for their creativity, so we gave people a way to come and indulge creatively for a week.

It worked out really well. Julia’s book “The Artist’s Way” has sold 4 million copies since the early nineties. It’s the book that defines the way modern culture looks at creativity.”

“I had been involved with the (National) storytelling festival for years and was also on the board of directors at the time of SOMOS, the Society of the Muse of the Southwest, which is the producer of the (Taos) storytelling Festival.

I suggested to the board that we should do a storytelling festival (in Taos). So all those years ago I helped start the festival, which we launched in Kit Carson Park underneath a tent in 1999.” ”Each year we like to bring one big-time storyteller in. We also have a regional storyteller, as well as Cisco Guevarra, a local Taosenan. This year we have Minton Sparks as our major storyteller. I have known Minton for some time now and I have seen her perform many times. She tends to get a standing ovation before she’s finished. She is a singer-songwriter, a poet, a storyteller. She has an unusual blend of storytelling. Our regional sto-

ryteller is Deborah Gerhardt. She is doing a story about migrating from Jamaica, and she is calling it “Jamaica Farewell”. Cisco Guevarra also is on stage. He has been on stage with us almost every year. Cisco runs Los Rios River Rafting, the oldest rafting company in northern New Mexico. Cisco is an encycolpedia of local information.”

What motivates people to get on stage and tell stories?

“In storytelling you have many different genres. Some people tell true stories from their life. Cisco Guevarra’s motivation for telling stories is because he is love with northern New Mexico and he likes to talk about the history of northern New Mexico. His family came here in the 1500s.

Minton’s motivation for telling her stories (this is me speaking) is to tell stories of where she’s from to give people a sense of the colorful aspects of the person-

alities she grew up around. Her stories often have a payoff moral punch. Deborah is more of a theater person. She is coming at it as an actor. Her piece, “Jamaica Farewell”, is storytelling from a theatrical point of view. I tell poems. I also tell personal stories as well. My motivation for telling stories it because I love language and I love to communicate with people.”

“I think at the end of the day the reason why people tell stories is because we as human beings are naturally inclined to communicate who we are, what we are about; communicate our ideas, communicate our inner thinking to people who listen. So those folks who are inclined to get on a stage and tell a story are doing it because they want their stories to be heard by a broader audience.

Human beings are natural storytellers, and that’s really, I think, how we survive as a species.”

You do have to leave enough leaf protection to prevent against sunscald, which is a problem here in our extreme sun. Sun scald shows up as a kind of blistery wrinkle on the skin surface.

Late summer and early

autumn offer breathtaking evening skies, with the summer Milky Way in prime position and four naked eye planets strung across the sky.

We’ll also be treated to one of the best meteor showers of the year.

As

darkness falls, the Milky Way stretches from the southwestern to the northeastern horizons. Viewed on a cloud-free and dark New Mexico evening, you can make out part of our galaxy’s structure -- the faint glow of myriad stars, at times, giving way to dark bands of interstellar dust. Naked eye astronomy doesn’t get any better than this.

Venus

begins August high in the WSW, having crossed the border into Virgo. Our closest and brightest planetary neighbor will reach its farthest point east of the sun on August 17th, at which point it will quickly head back toward the sun. By the end of October, Venus will, again, be a morning sky object.

Jupiter, temporarily reduced to being the third brightest planet, is still well-placed for viewing in the southwest as darkness falls in early

August. By the end of October, Jupiter will set in twilight.

In

the south, Saturn is the bright, yellow ‘star’ in Sagittarius, set against the backdrop of the Milky Way. In September, the ringed planet is only about a degree away from the Lagoon Nebula, the Trifid Nebula, and an open star cluster known as Messier 21.

Bright

reddish-yellow Mars is glowing in the southeast, near the Capricorn-Sagittarius border. At the beginning of August, Mars is just past its closest approach to Earth, its brightness temporarily surpassing Jupiter’s. If you pay attention to one celestial event this summer, watch Mars. It will not be this close and bright again for 17 years.

Mercury begins August in the morning sky, reaching its highest point in the dawn sky on August 26. By the second week in October, the innermost planet makes an appearance in the WSW, just after sunset. Because of the shallow angle it travels, as it crosses Libra into Scorpius, it won’t be very high and easy to view.

Here is a summary of night sky events occurring in August through October 2018: August 11: New moon.

August 12-13: The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of the 12th and morning of the 13th.

August 17: Venus is at greatest eastern elongation (its greatest distance east of the sun) in the constellation Virgo, setting approximately one hour and 50 minutes after the sun.

August 26: Full moon occurs at 5:57am MDT. The people of San Ildefonso Pueblo call this full moon the ‘Wheat Cut Moon.’

August 26: Mercury is at greatest western elongation, visible in the dawn sky.

September 9: New moon.

September 22: Summer turns to autumn when the autumnal equinox occurs at 7:54pm MDT. At that time, the Sun is directly above the Earth’s equator.

September 24: The full Harvest Moon occurs at 8:53pm MDT. October 8: New moon at 9:47pm MDT.

The

Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of August 12th and morning of the 13th. The moon will be out of the way for virtually the entire night, allowing about 60 meteors an hour to be seen.

The

best time to observe this meteor shower is after midnight, when the shower radiant (the point in the sky where the meteors seem to emanate) is above the northeast horizon. By the beginning of dawn, the radiant will almost be overhead.

But wait, there’s more!

For any pre-dawn risers, the Zodiacal Light is visible for about an hour before dawn, beginning in late August.

The Zodiacal Light is sunlight from the yet risen sun reflecting off of interplanetary dust.

It looks like a faint cone of light on the eastern horizon, wide at the horizon and slimming to a point about halfway up the eastern sky.

Clear, dark skies are required to see this phenomenon, which will be faintly visible until early November. The Zodiacal Light is also visible for an hour after dark, above the western horizon on spring evenings.

October 8: The Draconid meteor shower peaks with about ten meteors per hour visible.

October 10: At about 6:50pm MDT, just 15 minutes after the sun sets, Mercury and Venus will set in the WSW at about the same time, followed a few minutes later by the thin crescent moon. Briefly, before Mercury and Venus set, you can see all five naked eye planets in the sky. Binoculars will be necessary to find Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter (above and to the left of Venus) in the strong twilight.

October 21-22: The Orionid meteor shower peaks the night of the 21st and morning of the 22nd. While about 20 meteors per hour can be seen under clear, dark skies at the shower’s peak, the waxing gibbous moon will interfere with viewing.

October 24: The Hunter’s Moon will be full at 10:46am MDT, crossing from the constellation Pisces into Aries.

October 31: On Halloween, look for Mercury, to the lower left of Jupiter, between 6:45pm and 7:00pm MDT, just before they set beyond the WSW horizon in deepening twilight.
