Race Director’s Welcome On behalf of the entire race committee, the thousands of volunteers, and all the spectators along the race course, I would like to welcome you to our 39th Boilermaker Road Race. It’s been our goal over these past 38 years to bring you the absolute “Best 15k In the USA”. Once you have experienced our race, I know you’ll agree that we have done what we set out to do, and this is by far, “the best race" anywhere.

This year’s tiered registration process was a great success. We kept the transfer and “deferral” program from previous years, along with a 15K and 5K wait list. The programs worked so well that we may see the largest field of runners in our long and illustrious history.

The History of the Boilermaker Road Race The Boilermaker Road Race was established in 1978 by Earle C. Reed. Reed was looking for a way to give back to the community that had supported his family’s business, Utica Companies (ECR International). The race began with just over 930 runners and a budget of $750. Now, the Boilermaker is host to more than 18,000 runners. Each year, the race attracts top elite runners from all over the world, including Olympians and world record holders. The Boilermaker is not only one of the nation’s largest races, it has also been named by The Analytical Distance Runner as one of the most competitive 15K in the world.

While the Boilermaker is proud of its status as one of the largest and most competitive 15K races, it also is inclusive. From the young and old, world-class to casual runner, the Boilermaker offers a diversity of talent and ability that makes it appealing to all runners. No other race in the country offers a running event that impacts people in the region, and from all over the country, all year long—year after year.

A FAMILY STORYA FAMILY EVENT

The Boilermaker Road Race is so much more than a run through the historical streets of Utica. As you peel back the layers of all the runners, walkers, volunteers and personnel that make this event great, you’ll find amazing stories, life stories related to joy, sadness, success, tragedy, accomplishments and inspiration.

This is the story of our family, the Giglios – one of the thousands of families that make this event a true success.

Our family includes Frank, Laurie, Kaitlyn, Gianna and Vincenzo. Our Italian heritage and generational traditions date back decades and are a true example of the multiple cultures participating in the Boilermaker. If one would ask what has contributed to the overall success of the race throughout the years, the answer would be: family stories like ours.

We started with a plan – probably similar to that of most newlywed couples: enjoy each other’s company, travel, work hard and have a great social life. We were going to find the perfect starter home and, of course, start a family. It made sense to us, so we were off and running.

Our careers seemed to fit our personalities perfectly. Laurie, a hair stylist, was great connecting with people and always found a way to smile and laugh.

She would light up a room with her laughter during any situation. Her honesty and genuine personality is what attracted people to her, especially

me. I worked in management, in charge of more than 100 employees on a daily basis, doing well but not happy.

I had always wanted to be a firefighter, especially after losing two brothers at a young age to a house fire. That goal became a reality in 1995, when I was appointed to the Utica Fire Department.

All things seemed to be going in the right direction with our careers and our family. But then we received devastating news that changed our lives forever: Kaitlyn was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. We, our families and our friends were crushed.

Her strength during this time was an inspiration to us all. She never complained and fought every day.

Unfortunately, Kaitlyn lost her battle 10 months after she was diagnosed.

We miss her daily and continue to keep her spirit alive in our household and our hearts. That year - 1997 - with high emotions I ran the Boilermaker in Kaitlyn’s honor.

This crisis threw us out of direction: Communication was lost, poor decisions were made and it seemed I had nothing to live for. That caring feeling we all have inside didn’t exist anymore. My heart was cold and all the intelligent advice that was given didn’t matter; I just didn’t care.

Luckily, I turned to my father and asked him how he did it after losing two sons at the ages of 2 and 4. I’ll never forget what he said: “Frank, no

matter how bad it gets, you never quit on your family or your life.” I truly believe that day he saved my life and my marriage.

Laurie and I began reconnecting and worked on healing our wounds. It took months and many late-night conversations. Our love had to grow back and our faith had to be restored. Baby steps turned into yards then miles.

Fortunately, our hard work helped our marital commitment and relationship become strong again. And in 2001, our beautiful daughter Gianna was born.

She renewed our family values and structure and restored our vision for the future.

Coming from two large families, we knew Gianna could not be an only child. We understood how important siblings and cousins are to create childhood memories. When we learned we were having a son, we were all happy and excited. Having a girl and boy would be a great start to our large family. One morning in early 2004, I kissed my girls and left for my 24-hour shift at the firehouse. Towards the end of the day Laurie called and said she wasn’t feeling well and wanted to go to the hospital. I left work and picked her up.

After arriving at our local hospital, she was transported to a neonatal intensive care unit 40 miles away, where we learned that our son would be delivered prematurely. We were very nervous but were told of numerous premature babies who did fine.

A few days later our little man, Vincenzo, was born. Going to visit him that evening with excitement and concern, we noticed a team of doctors and nurses working on him. As they directed us to a private area and told us to wait, an overwhelming feeling of fear and concern came upon us. We hugged and began to cry.

We learned our son was very sick with meningitis. Our hearts hit the floor and our excitement for our newborn boy was replaced with fear and anxiety.

Days of worry turned into weeks, then months.

Over the next four months, we commuted more than 100 times to see Vincenzo, to hold him, pray for him and nurture him. We fought with every ounce of our energy to keep him going,

letting him know that mom and dad were there and loved him very much.

During this time our families and friends were amazing, helping us with our household and caring for Gianna, now 2 years old. My brothers at the firehouse supported us more than words can explain. These men showed enormous generosity and worked my 24-hour shifts so I could be with my family. They never once expected anything in return. To this day we are very grateful and could never repay them enough.

The joy of raising a new child was taken from us and replaced with the stress of making daily decisions which could cost our son his life. Since then, we’ve made numerous complex medical decisions to keep Vincenzo moving forward. Going to doctors’ appointments and hospital visits became our life. We’re fighting to keep a life going, and not just any life, our son’s.

What would you do if you had to fight for your child’s life? In our eyes there is only one answer: full commitment.

We understand this means total sacrifice on our part to direct all of our time and energy towards Vincenzo. We knew if this decision wasn’t made he would be the one to suffer and that’s not how our family operates. Today, we’re still fully committed to nurturing our son. Vincenzo, who is now 12, is blind and non-verbal. He cannot walk and has poor cognitive levels. He suffers from cerebral palsy and seizure disorder and has had more than 20 major surgeries.

Over the years, we have asked tough questions and fought on his behalf, to make sure his care was correct and that we were at the best facilities. We have gone through numerous physicians to make sure his needed level of care was met and achieved. We needed to be certain that we were going to the right places and seeing the best physicians.

After years of appointments, research, advice, trial and error, and prayers, we have put together Vincenzo’s ace team.

We work with neurosurgeons in Syracuse; the best pediatrician and staff locally; orthopedic surgeons and physician at Boston Children’s Hospital, and dedicated therapists, teachers and aides. These professionals have touched Vincenzo’s life and molded him into the young man that he has become today.

Vincenzo is more of a son then we could ever imagine. Although he hasn’t spoken full sentences, his presence speaks volumes wherever he may be.

Usually, it’s the parents who constantly educate and guide their children to do better and teach them not to make the

same mistakes they’ve made. But our Vincenzo pulled a reversal and became our teacher; he has taught us more than I could ever explain. Fighting through family challenges and communicating on major decisions has become one of our main assignments. He truly has the gift of giving.

We’re so proud of Vincenzo for all the major obstacles he’s overcome and we are amazed how he affects the people around him. Gianna has also been blessed through this experience with a special awareness to understand situations and look for solutions to resolve them. Her compassion is far beyond what a 14-year- old usually is accustomed to and her maturity grows daily.

Throughout the last 12 years our family has fought through the fear of making the right decisions to keep Vincenzo healthy and alive. The emotions, anxiety and stress we live with have worn us thin but are so worth the life of our son.

Although he has numerous disabilities we never let that interfere with our being together as a family. Vincenzo is included in everything, all family trips and events: camping on the St. Lawrence (boys only), Boilermaker Kids Walk/Run, all family celebrations, swimming at Woodberry Hills Swim Club and visiting Disney World. This year is no different with our Boilermaker family event. I’m running the 15k, Laurie and Gianna will be doing the 5k and Vincenzo will be wheeling fast at the ¼ mile kids run. We are excited and looking forward to another great experience.

Our family’s core values of integrity, faith and commitment have helped to keep our marriage strong and are a key element in raising our children.

Having a child is a gift that at times is taken for granted. We, as parents, have the responsibility to guide them throughout their lives. So nurture your children. Tell your son: “You have what it takes!” or your daughter: “You are worth fighting for and are adorable!”

Commit to your family and you’ll be rewarded forever.

For our community, the Boilermaker is so much more than a road race. The Boilermaker Committee is constantly looking to give back through support groups, donations and stories that may affect others in a positive way. Remember, your story may be the next one that could impact or help change a family’s life forever.

Volunteer of Year Award The Coach Peter DeStefano Volunteer of the Year for 2016 is Bob Malinowski, hydration director for the Boilermaker.

Malinowski has been volunteering at the Boilermaker since 1995 when he assisted at the starting line. In 2010 he became hydration manager, responsible for coordinating and managing all 21 water stations along the race route and their 1,460 volunteers.

Malinowski said his biggest challenge is coordinating delivery and distribution of supplies on race day. Bennett Trucking arrives at 5 am bringing 864 bags from Clayville Ice, 264,000 cups from McDonald’s, and 1,750 cases of water from Walmart.

Runners appreciate the vital importance of water during the race. For serious and recreational runners alike, proper hydration regulates body temperature and lubricates joints. Without enough water, runners can become fatigued, get dizzy and suffer muscle cramps. The American Council on Exercise recommends that a runner drink at least 7 to 10 ounces of water for every 10 to 20 minutes of exercise.

Malinowski’s job as hydration manager is of the upmost importance for safety, comfort and achieving the runners’ best performance.

“I’m proud to be involved with the Boilermaker,” he said. “I like the people that organize the race and the people that I work with. I look at them as friends. Helping friends is not volunteering, it’s helping friends get something done.”

Boilermaker President Tim Reed said water station logistics have grown considerably and have come a long way from the early days of the Boilermaker, when volunteers would hand out water-soaked sponges to runners. The aftermath would leave thousands of spent sponges in the street.

“I can’t thank Bob enough for his hard work and dedication,” said Reed. “He epitomizes what volunteerism is all about,” said Reed. “Providing water to the Boilermaker runners is the most important job we have as no water, no race.”

The Volunteer of the Year award is named for Peter DeStefano, the late Utica Schools coach and athletic director, who was a longtime volunteer on the Boilermaker chute crew.

Medical Tips

When it comes to the medical teams, we’ve got the best. Our hope is that they will be bored stiff on race day. You can help keep them bored by following a few simple steps.

Here is advice from Dr. John J. DeTraglia, the Boilermaker Medical Director, and Dan Brodel, EMS Coordinator.

1. Drink enough water so that your urine is clear the night before the race. Drink one quart of water before the start of the race and drink at least one cup of water every 15 minutes during the race. That won’t be a problem since there will be 20 water stations. But if you wait until you’re thirsty, you will have waited too long.

2. Keep your cool. Run in the shade whenever possible. Dump cups of water on your head and run through water sprays.

3. Adjust your pace to suit the weather. Heat and humidity are your enemies. The hotter it gets, the slower you should run.

4. Wear light loose-fitting clothing.

5. No alcohol the night before the race.

6. There are first aid stations, marked by the blue EMS star, all along the course, at the finish line, and in the entertainment area. If you feel ill, ask for help. The early signs of heat injury include dizziness, lightheadedness, unsteadiness, headache, nausea, chills and goosebumps. If you experience any of those symptoms, stop and get help. Don’t try to diagnose yourself.

Don’t try to keep running. There’s always next year.

7. If you have any medical problems, or a family

history of medical problems, or if you have any questions at all about your medical condition or your ability to compete, consult a physician prior to race day. Also, talk to your doctor if you are taking any medication.

8. Don’t start the race too fast. Run at your own pace.

And don’t run faster than you trained for.

9. If you need medical assistance at one of our area hospitals and return to the finish area after 1 p.m. your baggage will be at the Boilermaker Headquarters, 805 Court Street.

Charity Bib Program Assisting Charities The Boilermaker gives back!

The Boilermaker Charity Bib program has raised more than $400,000 since its inception in 2014, generating much-needed funds for not-for-profit agencies in the Utica area. In its first year, the Charity Bib program generated $141,000 for 11 qualified agencies while in 2015 the number of bibs awarded increased, as did the funds to $152,000.

Each year, the Boilermaker invites area 501(c)3 agencies to apply to be a designated agency, which entitles them to receive a designated number of race bibs, which they can distribute for a fee, to raise money for their agency. This year, 10 local agencies are participating in the program.

“The Charity Bib program goes hand-in-hand with the mission of the Boilermaker,” said Tim Reed, Boilermaker president. “The people of our community drive this much like our race. We have had over 41 runners raise over $1,000 each for very worthy charities.”

Applications from agencies are numerous and the final selection is difficult, but many wonderful agencies have benefited from the Charity Bib program, including CNY Veterans Outreach Center, Food Bank of CNY, United Cerebral Palsy, the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and many more.

This year, the Masonic Care Community is a designated agency. “We were so thankful to have been chosen a charity bib recipient,” said Victoria Cataldo, director of development for the Masonic Care Community. “As a large employer in the area that values employee wellness, it was a great way for us to help support our employees who wanted to participate and engage new donors, while raising funds needed to support a program designed to enhance the mental wellness of our residents.”

For the 2016 Boilermaker, Charity Bib agencies are: The Root Farm, Make A Wish, Food Bank of CNY, Masonic Care Community, ARC of Onondaga County, United Cerebral Palsy, Veterans Outreach Center, Midtown Utica Community Center, Sitrin Healthcare Center and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Each of the chosen charities – selected from 24 applications – must raise a minimum of $500 per bib they receive.

The bibs provide an opportunity for runners to participate in the Boilermaker while also assisting charitable agencies in fulfilling their mission with much needed funds. “It’s good for the runner and it’s good for the community,” said Reed.

Gary Liberatore wins Les Diven Award

WKTV UTICA, NY

The Boilermaker Committee and Tim Reed, Boilermaker president, are pleased to announce that Gary Liberatore of WKTV NEWSChannel 2 has been awarded the Les Diven Award, in recognition of his “exceptional coverage” of the Boilermaker and contributions to the community.

Liberatore grew up in Utica and attended Proctor High School where he played basketball and golf. After graduating from Utica College, he moved to San Diego, where he worked as a computer programmer.

Wanting a career with a people-oriented mission, Liberatore enrolled in the Master’s of Broadcast Journalism program at Syracuse University. After graduation, he started his broadcast career in Rochester, and then worked for six years in Cleveland, Ohio before returning to Utica with a position at WKTV. Liberatore said he is thrilled to be back in his hometown where he says the people are the most giving and caring of any of the markets he has worked in.

Liberatore is anchor of the News Channel 2 Weekend Today, and also covers news stories during the week. He has covered the Boilermaker for nine years. “The people are my favorite part of the Boilermaker,” said Liberatore.

“You get all sorts of characters and everyone is incredibly upbeat. It truly is a day that exemplifies what Utica is all about.”

WKTV’s race-day coverage begins when Liberatore arrives at 5:45 am at the race’s starting point at Culver Avenue. Then he and his news team head over to West Utica to cover the race as runners make the turn off Champlin Avenue onto Whitesboro Street.

His favorite race-coverage moment was when he was in East Utica and an old schoolmate did play-by-play in Italian. He said the WKTV Newsroom was flooded with calls from all over the United States from current and former Uticans who were thrilled to have the Italian spirit of East Utica live and on the air.

“It’s an honor to give the Les Diven Award to Gary Liberatore,” said Boilermaker President Tim Reed.

“His on-air enthusiasm brings great spirit and fun to the race.”

The award is named in honor of Les Diven, a sports reporter for the Utica Daily Press and the Observer-Dispatch for more than four decades. After retirement, Les and his wife, Patricia, became involved with the Boilermaker, handling every application submitted on paper which, until recently, was every single race application.

WKTV has been a long-time supporter of the Boilermaker. The station is one of the oldest NBC affiliates, and first went on air on December 1, 1949.

The M&T Cowbell Crew Green cowbells ringing! It’s what runners of the Boilermaker see and hear when they hit that last mile along Whitesboro Street.

Runners of the Boilermaker know the best part of the race is the finish, when it’s time to celebrate, commiserate with fellow runners, and relax with a cold Saranac brew. But that final stretch along Whitesboro Street can be the toughest. The M&T Cowbell Crew is there to cheer them on and celebrate the final push to the finish line. The M&T Mile Zone is a sea of green shirts and 2,000 cowbells, all registering the sound of appreciation for a race well run.

M&T Bank has had 160 years of service to the community, since its founding in 1856 as Manufacturers and Traders Bank. M&T has more than 650 branches and 15,000 employees yet maintains a close knit relationship in the community with their commitment to events like the Boilermaker Road Race.

The philosophy of contributing time and money comes from the top. Chairman and CEO Robert G. Wilmers explained, “The well-being of the bank is dependent upon the well-being of the communities we serve.”

M&T not only contributes sponsorship dollars, they have complete buy-in and participation by their

employees and their families who pass out the cowbells, ringing and cheering loudly while sporting bright green and white M&T shirts. The employee “Cowbell Crew” also recruits other race fans to clang the iconic green cowbells. After all, you can never have enough cowbell.

“Our cowbell crew is thrilled to create a ‘cheer zone’ with our large signature green banners, loud cheering and cowbell clanking,” said Alissa Viti, Charitable Relations Manager for M&T Bank.

Fly Over Inspires!

Is there anything more inspiring, fun and American than a flyover? Once again, the Boilermaker is thrilled to be giving the runners, volunteers and spectators a fantastic fly over, this year featuring the P-51 Mustang and the T-6 Texan.

The P-51 Mustang was the first United States-built fighter plane to fly over Europe in World War II after France fell to the Nazis. The P-51 Mustang met and defeated every German plane. The North American T-6 Texan is a single-engine advanced trainer aircraft that was used to train pilots from World War II through the 1970s. This Warcraft air bird is very popular at flyovers and airshows.

The flyover pilots will be led by Warbird pilot Mark Murphy. Murphy comes from a flying family – his father owns a 4,000-foot grass strip in Upstate New York and six of his family members fly. Other pilots participating in the Boilermaker flyover include David Murphy, Rodney Murphy and Dr. Russell Cecil.

“It’s an honor to perform a flyover at such a wonderful community event,” said Mark Murphy. “The view of the runners from the air is amazing.” Murphy began flying at an early age and received his pilot license at the age of 17. He’s a flight instructor specializing in T-6 and P-51 checkouts. He has more than 5,000 hours of flight time, holds a helicopter license and has flown 77 different types of aircraft.

Murphy also volunteers to fly for the Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour. Murphy pilots a P-51 named “Betty Jane.”

Murphy embodies the American spirit on the ground and certainly above it. “It’s an honor to have these pilots and planes in the boilermaker flyover,” said Tim Reed, Boilermaker President. “The P-51

Mustang was the workhorse plane of WWII and our runners will be overjoyed to watch these gorgeous planes zoom over our event.”

History on the Route

Boilermaker runners get in a “zone” where all they see are the runners in front and to the sides. They hear the cheers from the spectators but must stay focused on the course.

But along the race route, runners will pass some significant places.

As the route begins up Culver Avenue, on the left is the vast beautiful greenspace of F.T. Proctor Park. Its 62 acres are the “crown jewel” of Utica’s park system and site of the annual E.J. Hermann Cross Country Invitational, the second-oldest high school cross-country meet in New York State.

Farther on, after runners wind through Roscoe Conkling Park and Valley View Golf Course, they pass the sparkling and fun Utica Zoo. With 99 species, the Zoo is located just south of the Parkway on 80 acres of lush land and hills, with beautiful views of the Mohawk Valley. The Utica Zoo has been a home to animals of all kinds for more than 100 years.

Once back on the Parkway, runners pass some of the 13 monuments dedicated to prominent individuals and residents, as well as veterans. Statues honor Vice President James Schoolcraft Sherman, Revolutionary War Gen. Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben, Gen. Casmir Pulaski, and Utica benefactor Thomas R. Proctor, among others. Other monuments recall the Spanish American War and USS Maine, prisoners of war and those missing in action, as well as police and firefighters. There’s even a replica of the Statue of Liberty.

Several miles later along Whitesboro Street, on the last stretch of the race, is a large Greek Revival structure with six 48-foot tall pillars. This is the former Utica Psychiatric Center’s “Old Main” building. Opened in 1843 as the New York Lunatic Asylum, New York’s first state-run facility designed to care for the mentally ill, the center was world-renowned for its groundbreaking approach to providing loving care and stability to people with mental illness. Closed in 1973, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.

At the Parkway’s corner with Oneida Street is the Parkway Center and the Val Bialas Sports Center. The Val Bialas ski hill is one of only two in the nation located within a city. It was named after Olympic speed skater Val Bialas, a native Utican and three-time Olympian who competed in the Winter Games in 1924, 1928 and 1932.

The Parkway Center is a multi-purpose recreational facility, containing basketball courts and weight-training equipment; outside are tennis courts and a golf driving range.

Finally, at the finish line is the F.X. Matt Brewing Company, home of one of the oldest – and one of the few – family-run breweries remaining in the United States. Now in its fourth generation, the family brewery began in 1888 with 12 employees, cranking out 4,000 barrels of beer. Today it produces more than 350,000 barrels, including its Saranac brand and the world-famous Utica Club.

The Boilermaker couldn’t end on a better note than the Matt Brewery, said Tim Reed, Boilermaker president. “Utica is an old community, rich in history.”
