DEAR FRIENDS,
In November 2023, Columbus in Action commissioned BVH Architecture (BVH) to evaluate the potential of renovating the Columbus Theater. BVH examined existing building conditions to determine costs associated with ADA accessibility, safety, heating and cooling, acoustics, electrical, plumbing and structural needs.
BVH also conducted a series of listening sessions to gather community feedback and provide direction to the design team on how the theater can best impact Columbus and the surrounding region.
Based on this analysis and feedback, the Columbus In Action board determined that with renovations, the theater could accommodate the following experiences:
◊ Concerts
◊ Plays
◊ Classical movies
◊ Receptions / banquets
◊ Community events / festivals
◊ Speakers/ training/ presentations
◊ Public / student workshops
◊ Business meetings/ entrepreneurship
In summer 2024, Columbus in Action conducted a fundraising feasibility study to gather additional feedback and gauge donor interest. In addition, the Columbus In Action board, in partnership with Nebraska Public Power District, conducted an economic impact study to document the positive employment and economic effects associated with the planned theater renovation.
As a result, and after numerous discussions within the greater Columbus community, the Columbus In Action board has agreed to move forward in raising the estimated $8 million needed to renovate the theater. The board unanimously agreed the project would have a positive impact on Columbus and enhance our quality of life.
The information provided on the following pages is intended to familiarize you with the project details and kick-start our two-phase fundraising campaign. We welcome your feedback and involvement.

ECONOMIC BENEFITS
Beyond its cultural significance, a contemporary and operational theater has a tangible financial impact on the local economy. It attracts visitors from neighboring communities, boosting traffic to nearby businesses such as restaurants, shops, and hotels. Additionally, a revitalized theater will create job opportunities in various sectors, from construction and maintenance to hospitality and entertainment. By investing in its renovation, you are investing in the economic vitality of our downtown area.
PRESERVATION OF HERITAGE
The historic theater is not just a building; it is a symbol of our city's identity. Its architecture, design, and history reflect the rich tapestry of our past, and its restoration will safeguard our cultural legacy for future generations. We will honor Columbus’ past and contribute to its vibrant future.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
• READ THE FULL REPORT • www.columbusinaction.com/campaign
Renovating the Columbus Theater requires collaboration and community involvement. Through volunteer initiatives, fundraising events, outreach programs, and participation from residents, businesses, and organizations across the city, we can preserve and enhance a cherished landmark, strengthen our community’s social bonds, and instill a sense of pride and ownership in this treasured Columbus asset.
Based on study findings, I believe Columbus will see a positive economic impact and enhanced quality of life benefits as a result of this renovation. Simply stated, it’s a solid investment with great return for future generations.
Ken Lemke, PhD, Economist
Construction on the theater will be divided into two phases. Phase I will complete construction and key HVAC and mechanical infrastructure enabling the speakeasy to open as a stand-alone operation prior to the completion of the theater renovation. The time needed between Phase I and Phase II will depend on the fundraising pace.
PHASE I COSTS
PhA se II COSTS
& II
Total: $8,367,000
PROFORMA OPERATING BUDGET
We anticipate the theater will take two to three years before turning an operational profit. Not included in potential operating costs is any income received from on-going donations post capital campaign and any potential interest fees, should a loan be required to cover pledges received but not yet due.
The renovation of the theater will serve as a catalyst for the revitalization of downtown Columbus, attracting businesses, visitors, and residents. A thriving cultural hub naturally encourages economic growth by drawing patrons to nearby restaurants and shops. By restoring this iconic venue, Columbus is not only preserving a historic landmark but also investing in a vibrant and dynamic downtown district.

COLUMBUS THEATER GIFT CHART
This project has the potential to turn Columbus into a destination for theatergoers from miles away. In addition to being affordable, the theater will also be fully accessible to anyone with disabilities - an aspect that is particularly important to me, as the leader of a local health care organization.

THEATER NAMING RIGHTS — $4,000,000
Naming the theater will proudly and visibly recognize your business or your family’s gift to the arts and to Columbus as your community. Just think: every promotional advertisement going forward –wherever the theater is mentioned - will include your name. Most importantly, your gift will preserve our historic past and provide inspiration for artists and audiences for generations to come.
PROSCENIUM STAGE ARCH — $750,000
Next to naming the theater itself, attaching your name to the proscenium arch framing the stage means high visibility and marketing opportunities with thousands of theater goers for decades.
SPEAKEASY — $500,000
Pour yourself a guaranteed return by affixing your name to the speakeasy. Designed as a stand-alone operation, the speakeasy will attract audiences and patrons on a daily basis. We may even engrave a personalized bar stool for you!

The theater lobby is a gathering and meeting spot for audiences. In addition to providing space for small socials and mixers, the lobby will also give you high visibility and exposure.
BALCONY — $250,000
Naming the balcony creates a sense of identity and special significance for theatergoers who associate it with a celebrated individual or institution. It also adds history, exclusivity, and importance to the theater, creating a legacy for your business or family. Imagine patrons sitting in the “your name here balcony.”
• NAMING OPPORTUNITIES
