Be Military Friendly Five simple steps to support service members and families By Mitch Goldstone

M

embers of our military face hardships on a daily basis that most of us will never know. I can’t imagine not seeing my wife or children for months and missing events such as the birth of a child, a first word spoken, or something as simple as that first goal scored in pee-wee soccer. So, why should your organization strive to be a military friendly company, and what are things you can do as a business to show your support?

Consider These Perks Supporting military families, whether stationed here in the U.S. or abroad, is a critical aspect of every communityoriented business. This support can come in many different forms—businesses are encouraged to be creative. In our case, ScanMyPhotos.com offers a special, no-charge five-day rush for our standard photo scanning orders received from APO and FPO addresses. We encourage military families to 18  Defense Communities

scan their old photos for a couple of reasons. The scanned photos can be easily shared with family members overseas, but most importantly, those nostalgic pictures help lift the spirits. Sharing photos with bunkmates also brings a sense of camaraderie and creates friendships along the way, all through reminiscing over cherished images. It’s these small tokens of appreciation that we as business owners should encourage, whether in the form of a discount or other special perks. Whatever the initiative entails, be sure it shows support and appreciation toward both military personnel and their families. Obviously, offering such a benefit is fitting for our business, but for other business owners looking to make a difference, there are numerous other options, too. Here are five easy tips: 1. Partner up: The “Operation Photo” Story—If your business is considering jumpstarting a military friendly initiative, partner up with those who believe in the same mission of giving back.

© istock.com/videodet

In 2004, ScanMyPhotos.com partnered with Operation Homefront, Kodak, Sony, and Canon to collect new and used digital cameras for military families for a campaign called Operation Photo. We believed that through sharing photos, families could enjoy both the special and the day-to-day moments that make being separated so hard. We also understood that not every family could afford a digital camera to do this. In just a few months, we were able to collect and donate over 2,500 cameras for military families. Through partnerships like Operation Photo, several parties can simultaneously promote the same campaign, spreading greater awareness and creating a more effective movement. 2. Hire veterans as employees: Recently, a national news program discussed the qualities that make military personnel perfect employees, and why many companies should choose to hire them. Current and former military personnel are dedicated and disciplined and and know the value of following procedures and accepting responsibility. Doesn’t that sound

like a model employee? As a side effect, being openly military friendly can drive new customers to your website or business because people like to patronize companies that understand and appreciate military knowledge, support, and real-world experience. 3. Volunteer your time and talents: Think about what your business does and search the Internet for programs that may fit what you do. Speak with various military charities and organizations to find out what they need and how your company can fill that void. For example, are you a professional photographer? Programs such as Hearts Apart, Operation Love Reunited, and the Portraits of Love are just a few non-profit organizations that bring military families together with professional photographers to create special family portraits. These portrait sessions for soon-to-bedeployed service members not only give the families a chance to bond before deployment, but also give photo memories that last a lifetime for the family back home and the service member November | december 2013 19

| FEAT U R E |

abroad. In their mission statement, Hearts Apart states that “our military personnel deserve and need the memory of their families to carry them through the difficult times that lie ahead.” We know that, sometimes, a photograph is all you have. This is just one example, but there are thousands of programs to which your business can contribute (both financially and through in-kind donations). 4. Be a good neighbor: If your business is located near a military base, chances are you see a lot of military families come through your doors. Have predetermined discounts set up for military personnel and instruct your employees to offer the perk or discount without hesitation and without being asked. Here in Irvine, California, we are located near the former Marine Corps Air Station Tustin Base but still have many military ties in the area. To this day, many local restaurants still offer free drinks with meals to military personnel that show up in uniform. In turn, businesses are quickly realizing that military customers are loyal and appreciative of those who give back to service members and their families.

Encourage employees to thank service members for the sacrifices they make. Sometimes a simple “thank you” can make all the difference in someone’s day. 5. Donate directly: Websites such as Operation Homefront and Blue Star Families accept direct monetary contributions, and both state that 94 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to supporting their military family programs. Instead of just donating money, consider raising money while selling your product. Many businesses use eBay to sell their products, and the popular online auction community has made it easy to raise money for qualified programs and charities. You choose the charity to support and choose the amount of the sale you wish to donate. eBay has hundreds of military charities to choose from, such as Children of Fallen Soldiers, the Wounded Warrior Project, and the aforementioned Operation Homefront and Blue Star Families. Get started at www.givingworks.ebay.com/. n Mitch Goldstone is the president and CEO of ScanMyPhotos.com.
