Note From the Editor Hello!

Dear Fresher, university student, or anyone else that happens to stumble across Strathclyde Telegraph’s 2018 Freshers’ Edition.

Hello.

This year, Strathclyde Telegraph has a new team and with that comes a new approach. You’ll see us scattered around with new editions every few months with the majority of content being online-only through our website. Each edition is themed, starting off with content based around a new semester at university.

As summer comes to an end and you begin the next chapter of your life it can feel terrifying. Not knowing what you want to do, who you’re going to meet, or where you’re going to end up. There’s no need to fret, Strathclyde Telegraph editors and contributors have compiled an essential guide to your new home and the beautiful city of Glasgow that awaits. We’ve got guides on what to do in the city and where to eat, things we wish we’d known when starting our university career and films to binge watch when the thought of daylight on a Tuesday morning feels like death.

If you’re moving into your next year at uni or quite simply just impersonating a student to get free goodies during Freshers’ week then there’s something for you too - information about Glasgow’s music scene and upcoming gig listings to tuck into as well as information on upcoming events such as the Glasgow Youth Film Festival.

They say university is the best time of your life. That’s not necessarily true, it might be but then again it probably won’t. There’s no need to stress, come to a Strathclyde Telegraph social on a Monday night and let life do its thing.

Whoever said student newspapers weren’t cool clearly didn’t have a clue. We’re the society for everyone and anyone, allowing people to pursue passions and learn on the way. You don’t have to be a journalism student or the next James Joyce to take part - all you need is an idea and an interest, the rest is the easy part.

So, with that said and done, welcome to Glasgow. Your new home for the next however many years and debatably, the most beautiful city in the world.

Freshers’ Week is once again upon us and as usual plenty of events and activities will be taking place across campus.

The week will feature the usual Strathclyde classics including a performance from Cascada on September 13th at Vertigo from 9pm and the annual trip to Ikea on the morning of the 9th. 2018 will also see Love Island mania sweep across Strathclyde.

Georgia Steel from the hit show drops by the Barony Bar on the 18th of September from 10pm, followed by a Love Island themed Beach Party with the Mac Twins at the Barony Bar on the 23rd.

If you’re not that into Love Island, then you might want to get involved in the introduction of a Casino Night at The Yard on the 15th, or perhaps a Retro Fest at the Barony instead. You may be more into the 80s and if so, the Roller Disco on the 10th at Vertigo might be the right choice for you.

If themed nights aren’t really your thing, then you might prefer the free Freshers’ Club Night at the Barony Bar on the 10th from 10pm, or new Strathclyde weekly night Boombox @ The Barony which will launch on the 11th at 9pm.

There’s also the VK Electric Party on the 8th at Vertigo, the UV Paint Party on the 11th as well as a night dedicated to student anthems on the 13th at the Barony Bar from 10pm.

Replacing the old Centre for Sport and Recreation will be a modern facility with first class equipment, a huge upgrade which students and the community will largely benefit from.

The new Sports Centre features a 180-capacity fitness suite with a dedicated strength and conditioning area complete with cardio and

Strathclyde Sport will be the home of the new Sports Union, providing students the opportunity to access over 50 different sports clubs at all levels. Memberships are available from £60 per semester or £103 annually for students, as well as pay as you go options for the fitness classes as a non-member.

Debunking the myths of first year

BY AMY CLAIRE SHEARER Welcome to Strathclyde! Your home for the next chapter of your life, the blank canvas for new memories, the stepping stone into your future.

First of all - congratulations! It’s not easy to get here - and I don’t mean because you will have to walk up a hill that should probably be considered one of Scotland’s highest mountains). So, if, and probably when, the going gets tough just remember that you are here for a reason.

When I found out I got accepted into university, my thoughts turned to those crap American teen movies with girls hanging out at fraternity houses with copious amounts of alcohol consumed from bright red cups. The reality I experienced instead was an abundance of tipsy teenagers belting out Evacuate the Dancefloor while drinking 99p pints from The Barony Bar. And I probably would not change it for anything else.

Everyone’s experience here is different - some people stay at home and travel; some people are 5000 miles from home and stay on campus; and some people couch surf as they lost their flat key at a fresher’s event. I learned that while we are all taught the same thing in lectures and seminars, these next four or five years are really what To and from campus for me consists of a 50 minute train journey each way, and if you too are part of the commuter club I really recommend using that time to do work for your seminars. Turning my phone off, getting stuck into work and completing tasks makes such a difference to my day. If I’m on my way it helps me get in the correct headspace before class; and if I’m only way home, it means I have more time that night to binge-watch the Great British Bake Off. You’ll also start seeing people post in the big Strathclyde Freshers pages looking for other people in their course - and if you’re anything like me you’ll end up in a 150-person group chat shaking with anger at folk sending memes at half 2 in the morning. But I must admit that just having that group allowed me to recognise a few familiar faces, ask for help with assignments and making me feel like I was never really alone.

As you can probably guess, one of the things I was most worried about was making new

friends. I mean, you just spent the last 13, 15, even 18 years with the same people and now you’re expected to start again! But, as cliché-y as it is, everyone is on the same boat.

When you’re in lectures and seminars, smile at people, sit near them and make small chat - even if it’s just asking what in the bloody hell the lecturer is talking about. I met one of my best friends at uni because I complimented his t-shirts later, and 3 weeks later we were knocking back skittle bombs in the Union like they were going out of fashion.

Something I found incredibly difficult to adjust to at first was going from an environment where all members of staff knew my name to one where the lecturer wouldn’t know whether you turned up or not. It seemed strange not having someone keeping tabs on you, and it is truly a test of your dedication to the course. What I don’t recommend is following my footsteps, and by that I mean choosing shoe shopping over slide scanning. It seemed like a great idea at the time, but trust me, when it came to assignment deadlines I had more regrets than Fergie when she sang the U.S national anthem. You don’t have to spend every night studying, but it’s always best to try keep on top of things from the first week. Maybe I should try and take my own good advice this semester...

One final advice: never feel like you’ll be alone. Strathclyde has a great support system, so if you’re feeling a bit out of sorts or overwhelmed, speak to people. Tutors are more than happy to answer emails (just don’t message them on a Friday night when they’re most likely 4 glasses of wine in) and there are great resources too that you can find on the university website, or in the Union.

This is your time, don’t let anyone or anything stand in the way of that. Work hard and play harder. Oh, and always ask if places do a student discount...

Firewater on Sauchiehall Street have food deals throughout the week (think poutines, pizza), and is a cool place to sit, play some old tunes on the jukebox and try some of their deep fried cookie dough (trust me, it’s gorgeous!). Paesano on Miller Street near George Square sell amazing pizza for a surprisingly good price. Another Strathy favourite is the Ark Bar near the Union; dog friendly, good food and good atmosphere – what’s not to love? Especially worth mentioning is Celino’s Italian on Alexandra Parade, who not only sells breakfast, lunch and dinner,

Things I wish I’d known as a fresher

BY SOPHIE DAGENS it has almost any book you could ever need, and it has computers if you don’t have one.

However, you should know that the library gets busier as exams start approaching, so get there early if you need a computer. With lots of others students revising on campus during exam time, it’s very likely that you will run into someone you know and that you’ll end up chatting for 30 minutes instead of actually doing any work. If you struggle to focus, I recommend booking a study room or choosing a silent floor like one, four or five.

Being at university is not just about school work however. For a lot of you, starting uni also It only seems like yesterday that I arrived in Strathclyde as a young, wide-eyed fresher.

In terms of preparing for an exam or working on a deadline, I highly recommend checking out past papers and tutorial exercises so that you know what to expect. Find a way of working on those that match your method and you’ll be

Joining clubs and societies and doing extracurricular activities will improve your uni experience by miles. Whether it’s a course-related society or your favorite sports club, you’ll meet great people and it’ll be great to unload from school work for a few hours every week.

Finally, the last thing you need to know is that nobody will have a ‘perfect’ fresher year, no matter how good their grades are or how much fun they have. Everyone has their lows, and a first year at university can definitely be challenging. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you’re struggling.

Five Arts and Culture Spots to Visit in Glasgow

BY YAGYANSH BAGRI Before I tell you the hidden sights the city of Glasgow has to offer, I have an interesting story for you.

I came to Glasgow to study Mathematics. I have now been residing here for two years, the first six months of which I spent trying to get the locals, and more importantly my professors, to pronounce my name right. At one point I decided, just call me Tom, it’s okay.

My first proper exposure to the Scottish Accent, I’m walking into university and this guy is looking at me. “Mate, can you pass me the bo-uhl of wa-uh.”

In my mind I’m asking, why is he speaking gibberish? If you haven’t yet encountered that situation yet (mainly for the international students) be patient, there’s a Glaswegian Storm approaching soon. Pardon my accent.

Moving to a new city, residing amongst millions

There are a myriad of places to visit whilst staying in one of the busiest cities for sport – home to two major league football clubs and a rugby club.

Here are just some of the things that Glasgow has to offer in the arts and culture scene (and better yet, they all have free entry): Glasgow Cathedral, Castle Street Opening hours: April – September: 9:30A.M. – 5:00P.M (Mon to Sat), 1:00P.M. – 4:30P.M. (Sun); October – March: 10:00A.M. – 3:30P.M. (Mon to Sat), 1:00P.M. – 3:30P.M. (Sun) One of the city’s most significant historic buildings is the 12th century Glasgow Cathedral, also known as St. Mungo’s Cathedral. Seen from both the inside and out, it looks as if it dropped out of a giant mould: the lines are seemingly clear and there’s no superfluous ornamentation.

For all the students pursuing architecture, this is a must-visit site.

It all depends on perspective, however students coming to the largest metropolitan city of Scotland should consider themselves lucky for the friendly and rejuvenating atmosphere the Glaswegians have to offer.

Located on the River Clyde, Glasgow has been transformed from an industrial city to the country’s cultural centre, with its excellent museums, art galleries, concert venues and festivals. It’s Gaelic name meaning “lovely green place” is apt, given its 70 parks and open spaces. Music lovers of all kinds will find plenty of things to do in Glasgow, as it is also known as Scotland’s Music Capital, with venues that include the Theatre Royal (Home of the Scottish Opera) and the Concert Hall (Home of the Royal Scottish Orchestra).

The Lighthouse, 11 Mitchell Lane Opening hours: 10:30A.M. – 5P.M. One of the hidden treasures of Buchanan Street is the Lighthouse. Located down an alley, once you have entered you are required to climb a large flight of stairs to witness the incredible view it has to offer. A romantic spot too; so, if you’re willing to make the sacrifice of making your date work, it’s more than worth it.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, Argyle Street Opening hours: 10A.M. –5P.M. Opened in 1901, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery Museum is home to a fine collection of British and continental paintings, including gems such as Van Gogh’s portrait of the Glaswegian art collector Alexander Reid and Salvador Dali’s Christ of Saint John of the Cross.

An exceptional series of galleries feature the Glasgow School of Art and its best-known figure, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with complete furnished rooms, pottery, metalwork and furniture. This is Scotland’s most visited free attraction.

South Portland Street Bridge Glasgow is widely known for the Clyde Arc. What surpasses the Clyde Arc, is surely the South Portland Street Bridge. Not only is it a sought after destination for after-revision walks, but every night the serene surroundings and calmness of the river below makes it definitely one of the top places to visit.

Glasgow Necropolis, Castle Street Opening hours: 7A.M. – 7P.M. Now you wouldn’t normally hear many people suggesting tourists should visit a cemetery, however this 37-acre cemetery is filled with architecture, sculptures and fascinating stories related to the 50,000 people laid to rest here.

Situated next to the Cathedral, you could visit both sites on the same day.

These are just some of the highlights of what Glasgow has to offer, for newcomers and seasoned residents alike. As an international student myself, my advice would be this: Over the weekend just sprawl over the city with Google Maps, you won’t imagine what you might stumble upon.

Book Review: This Is Going To Hurt

Britain’s National Health Service (NHS), long the crown jewel of the welfare state, is struggling with record levels of demand and full social care service. The NHS employs over 1.7 million individuals around the UK, and the wellbeing of this vital service affects us all, whether we are receiving treatment, or working on the frontline ourselves.

Comedian Adam Kay was an obstetrician and gynaecologist for six years before resigning in 2010. This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor is a harrowing account of Kay’s experiences riding the violent wave that is the NHS. 97-hour weeks. Life and death decisions. Objects stuck in compromising places. Centred around his diary entries between 2004 and 2010, Kay offers a moving and eye-opening account of hospital life, from the complicated patients to the sleepless nights, to the lost weekends and relationship struggles. Though he may be crack wise, Kay’s admiration for the profession shines through his tales of bureaucratic pressures and moral dilemmas.

With simplicity and passion, Kay’s book is a telling insight into the real world of medicine, littered with both grief and humour, following the various objects Kay has removed from the human body.

I first read Kay’s confessional while lying on a beach in the Dominican Republic. My mind grew heavy in the knowledge that over 140,000+ doctors and 300,000+ nurses were working 18hour shifts while I did so, tirelessly keeping our NHS afloat. Though it is easy to feel guilty from reading Kay’s horrific and heart-wrenching tales, we must respect our doctors and nurses.

The next time you feel like complaining about the packed A&E waiting rooms, the delayed appointments or the lack of bed space, direct your anger to Theresa May and her Tory friends who prioritise money over our health.

“The hours are terrible; the pay is terrible… But there’s no better job in the world.” Adam Kay’s heartening, laughout-loud confessional on the indignities and quiet joys of being a junior doctor in the UK National Health Service will show you our NHS in a whole new light, confirming your worst fears about the NHS in Tory Britain.

Top Netflix Shows To Binge-Watch Hungover This Freshers Week So, you’re sat on the sofa dying from the night before. Netflix is on and you’re endlessly scrolling through what to watch yet nothing is catching your eye…Look no further: here are four shows to auto-play countless episodes of after a big night out.

First up, If you haven’t heard of this, you really were studying for those exams (or hiding under a rock for the past year). Black Mirror takes all of the “what ifs” and makes them a reality. What if the world becomes dependent on your “followers” or “likes”? What if a machine told you how long that Tinder date relationship was going to last? That would be a miracle, eh? Give Black Mirror a watch to see what the future could hold for all of us. It’s scarily accurate.

The 100 follows a group of 100 kids going back to earth to see if it’s inhabitable, as well as their journey in adapting to the challenges that they encounter on the way. Definitely a binge watch, I watched it all within a few days.

Last but nowhere least is Breaking Bad. Arguably my absolute favourite of the four, I’ve watched this 10 times. Follow drug kingpins, Walt and Jessie on their rise and ultimate fall throughout the volatile drug industry. This will have you unconsciously hitting that “next episode” button. Expect Netflix to become concerned and ask, “Are you still watching Breaking Bad?”

Where to Watch Films in Glasgow As arguably the heart of Scotland’s Film Industry, Glasgow is a city rich in culture and bursting with originality. Summer Sounds

When people say that your uni years are the best of your life, they often refer to the socials, the friends - the lie ins! But what about the four month summers? Once the books are finally laid to rest, students have their summer to spend how they please. So we asked a fellow students to tell us what they got up to and give us their musical highlights of the summer.

Colette Cooper As summer was beginning, I had the pleasure of seeing the American singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne at the SSE Hydro. LaMontagne is best known for his folksy, charming melodies and husky voice, with his songs ranging from more upbeat tunes to emotional ballads that perfectly soundtrack evenings curled up on the couch with a hot chocolate. Being a naturally shy person, LaMontagne has been been quoted saying that he prefers to ‘rather sing than talk’.

This may explain the use of minimal lighting, and a soothing backdrop that gently alternated matching the tone of each song. Each unique feature simply added to his stunning performance; he began by greeting the audience under his tipped cowboy style hat, and immediately the atmosphere in the audience seemed content and at ease, with a few eager people shouting for his attention.

The singer opened with some excerpts from his new album: Part of the Light, which consists of catchy melodies and heart-warming lyrics.

Tracks including, ‘Such a Simple Thing’ and others from the album were played in between some of his older songs including ‘Airwaves’ a playful, upbeat solution to brighten the mood in amongst his tear-jerking love songs. The audience were treated to a performance of fan favourite, ‘Supernova’, from his 2014 album of the same title - which welcomed in an uplifting shift to his performance. This shift brought a combination of both light-hearted and sombre music, his warm stage presence keeping the audience in good spirits. His powerful range and impres

sive riffs continued to mesmerise the audience throughout his performance.

Coming back out for an encore, LaMontagne left us with a performance of, ‘All the Wild Horses’, from his first album Trouble. This was the perfect lullaby to end the night, leaving the audience feeling sentimental and desperately wanting more.

Hideout Festival, Croatia Emma Malcolmson Hideout Festival comes around once a year on the island of Pag in Croatia, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Having never been to a festival out-with the UK, I was cautious of how I would find it, especially being on a beach, but it turned out to be worlds above wellies and pop up tents.

Travelling to Croatia is surprisingly easy and the flights are reasonably cheap, making Hideout Festival the perfect party location. In terms of accommodation, there aren’t as many resorts or hotels as such, when compared to other party

destinations such as Ibiza or Magaluf – but there are plenty of AirBnB’s and apartments/rooms available on Booking.com. There are plenty of cheap apartments to choose from, and if you don’t mind ‘slumming it’ for a few days, then you can find accomodation fairly cheaply. However, considering that you will be spending the majority of your time on Zrće Beach, you won’t mind basic accommodation.

Zrće Beach is a small enclosed beach with around six clubs along the shoreline, with sets taking place across all six venues. Getting around the festival site is effortless, as it’s pretty much a straight ‘strip’. The clubs are classed as ‘superclubs’ and are renowned for their lively atmospheres. The highlight of the festival was definitely Noa Beach Club – which is ranked thirteenth in ‘DJ Magazine’s” ‘Top 100 Clubs’. Hideout isn’t a huge festival, which doesn’t ever feel overcrowded being over crowded, despite selling out each year since its inception in 2011. It’s the perfect beach holiday festival, whether you’re a house music connoisseur or a novice, Hideout provides a bit of something for everyone.

Interview with The Vignettes

With flights, hotels and tickets a fraction of the price of one night in Edinburgh, travelling to Poland to witness the legendary Rolling Stones, was a no brainer.

A sea of trademark lolling tongues march upon Warsaw’s 60,000 capacity PGE Narodowy stadium; a mixture of nationalities, ages and genders united by one era-defining band. Tonight’s support, Trombone Shorty sets the pace for the evening, infusing the arena with sweet jazz and lifted spirits which culminate in an anticipated flurry of Mexican waves that do not break until the band enter the stage.

Strong opener ‘Street Fighting Man’ is followed by ‘It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It)’, signalling the start of two hours of iconic, singalong lyrics. Jagger peacocks his way through the hits, flashing his signature pout and providing agedefying moves - his 75-year-old body still bends effortlessly. The evening is fired up by fan favourite ‘Paint it Black’, it’s spaghetti western riffs electrifying the crowd. This is neatly followed by ‘Honky Tonk Woman’, before Jagger disappears, leaving Keith Richards at centre stage to perform two blues hits. Keith’s well-preserved vocals noticeably more intact than Jagger’s, who is often aided by backing vocalists throughout.

How did you guys meet and why did you decide to form the band?

Innes: Hamish and I met at a flat party in Freshers’ week back in 2015, then met Matthew shortly after at the Bands at Strathclyde Society. We were all looking to join a band and it all kind of came together from there. We met Sean in early 2017 after looking for a new bassist and it was then that he joined the group.

I: Hamish and I both write the songs for the band, and the inspiration comes from various different places. I think quite a lot of our co-writes are observational – we see certain types of people or

Jacqueline is an amalgam of all the very enigmatic people who get dressed up and float from party to party, and yet you never really get to know them too well. So we’ve probably all encountered a Jacqueline or two at some point, and those new to Strathclyde will no doubt meet some too.

Who are your biggest influences?

I: As a band, we’d be looking at Talking Heads and The Clash mainly, as well as New York Dolls, who are definitely one of the most underappreciated bands there’s ever been.

Individually, Bruce Springsteen is perhaps my biggest influence, but I also took a lot from the Rolling Stones and Dylan. For Hamish, Bowie is a big one, along with the Velvet Underground. Sean likes some Black Sabbath and Supertramp. Matthew is into Queen and The Darkness.

The O2 Academy The O2 Academy is another venue rooted in Glasgow’s recent history. The venue was once home to the ‘New Bedford Cinema’ opening in 1932 and is an incredible example of Art Deco architecture within the city. Situated in the Gorbals, just south of the city centre, the O2 Academy is the sister venue to the O2 ABC on Sauchiehall Street. Tragically, the O2 ABC was destroyed in the recent fire in the Mackintosh Building at the Art School.

Since opening as a music venue in 2003, the O2 Academy has become a staple within the Glasgow scene, with some of the biggest tours of the UK passing through it’s doors. The venue host a variety of shows from gigs, comedy, stage performances and even drag shows. This venue is the perfect place to catch your favourite acts in a more intimate setting before they graduate to arena shows.

To properly immerse yourself in Glasgow’s music venue, make sure you catch a gig at the multitude of additional venues, the city has to offer.

Food Essentials to Survive Freshers’ Week For you fresher babies, it’s probably the first time leaving your family for an extended period. You are also, most likely, ready to party.

Now take it from a veteran who is approaching her 24th birthday: you need the right fuel for this week-long expedition. So gather round and listen as I prepare you for one of the best weeks of your lives.

What do marathon runners eat the day before an event? CARBS! Loads of ‘em! This is your best starting point, too. Any kind of carb is your friend so stock up on pasta, rice, bread, and any kind of potato-based product.

They’ll do a great job at soaking up all that cheap booze the morning after. You’ll thank me later.

Second up is another essential – cheese.

Cheese is a beautiful, amazing creation and your new student house will not be a home without it. It can be a tad on the pricey side so look out for deals in the supermarket and go for stronger varieties. You haven’t lived until you’ve come home from a night out and tucked into a big old block of the stuff.

Next up is the one I promised your mum I would put in – fruit and veg. If you don’t have enough of them, you could lack vitamins and fibre. No one wants to pull a constipated fresher suffering from mild gangrene so stock up on the fresh, frozen, dried, and tinned varieties.

Finally, while you may think you can live on pasta alone, you should probably add some protein to the mix. If you’re a meat eater look out for the yellow stickers or cheaper cuts to save yourself a bit of cash. Eggs are also a really great alternative if you’re a veggie and for all you vegans out there load up on tins of lentils and beans which you can get for pennies.

Warning: You Won’t Burn the Halls

BY STEPHEN BEATTIE Dear Freshers, Let’s get one thing established right now, before you move into halls and student flats and set the kitchen on fire. You aren’t going to set the kitchen on fire. Cooking is shockingly easy. Coming from someone who hadn’t cooked a day in his life before moving into halls, I love cooking. It’s fun, it can be as creative as you like, and it’s easy.

Maybe you’ve seen memes of a charcoaled piece of toast on Twitter. Maybe you’ve been tagged in that meme because you’re that person, the one who just can’t cook. Well - it’s fake news. Every student has the basic intelligence not to set the place on fire and destroy their new flat. You are all millennials, with phones, computers, Wi-Fi, and data. Use Google to find recipes online.

YouTube videos are your lifeline and take out the monotony of cooking. Regardless of what you cook, your restrictions, whether you only eat halal or only eat vegan, you can cook it and not only that, the more you try, you’ll only get better at it!

That’s not to say there aren’t a few things to watch out for. Keep your workspace clear. Not only is it dangerous to have a bunch of pots and knives all about, it’s incredibly frustrating to try and manoeuvre around a bunch of prep equipment. That goes for dirty dishes, too! No one wants to make a delicious meal next to someone’s leftover, congealed curry!

Maybe you’ve moved into a private flat with gas instead of hotplates - keep a special eye to turn the gas on and off properly.

Don’t use the same cutting board for raw chicken and your veggies!

Take note of what your flatmates are allergic to, such as nuts or eggs, and clean up contaminations as soon as possible. Your food won’t burn in three seconds. Simple stuff goes a long way to making cooking a fun experience.

So, fresher students, take a deep breath, turn on the oven and cook without fear!
