ou will read in this issue that our dear Maureen Paliew has retired from the Crier, pending relocation.

On behalf of the committee that produces your Stratford Town Crier, I publicly extend our gratitude to Maureen for her multi-faceted contribution to this paper and our team. We will miss Maureen’s articles, initiative, energy, insight, local knowledge and care for the individuals of our community.

We wish you well Maureen. Yours will be big shoes to fill.

It is not only the Crier that depends on volunteers. Volunteer week in Victoria in May was celebrated locally and highlighted the positives stemming from volunteering; for the recipients and for those volunteering. The benefits, expected and perhaps unexpected, can include gaining confidence, meeting new people, adding value to your resume if seeking paid employment, learning new skills, being part of and giving back to your community.

This month we have featured just a few of the volunteers and volunteer activities in Stratford. If you are interested in giving and gaining through volunteering, talk to someone already involved or check out the community groups on page 10 of each issue of the Crier.

his month a chainsaw was stolen from a shed in Dixon Street, power tools were stolen from a ute parked at a business on Princes Highway, welding cable was stolen from another business on Princes Highway and a Stratford man was arrested in relation to a burglary in Maffra.

A truck roll over on the Princes Highway caused major traffic disruption but no one was seriously injured and another vehicle rolled over on Bengworden Road but the driver was uninjured. A vehicle struck a safety barrier in Tyers Street and a motorcyclist was airlifted to the Alfred Hospital after an off road motorcycle collision in Stockdale.

There have also been a large number of collisions with animals on local roads, including quite a few kangaroos being struck on Briagolong Road and Bengworden Road. Please take care on the road, particularly if driving on back roads between sunset and sunrise.

reat things are happening at 'The Crier'. Now is an exciting time to get involved, individually or as a community group. 'The Crier' is your newspaper, giving you the opportunity to tell a story or share news. Time for me to retire so I wish to tell how grateful I am to have worked closely with some of the best people. The Committee of the Stratford Town Crier is a fantastic team doing a terrific job. This very small group is outstanding, I was truly fortunate to have so many talented, committed and enthusiastic people behind me. I shall miss my 'Crier' family.

Vic, myself and our beautiful fur babies, Thorne, and his new to be partner in crime to lead astray, Millie, (born 7 March 2019) are soon doing a sea change. But not too far as 50 minutes up the road will see me return every now and then.

Thank you everyone, Stratty people are the best.

Even though it is winter we are still playing tennis.

Our coach Nick Bauer (Club tennis coach) is offering numerous tennis coaching programs at Stratford during winter including an exciting winter comp on Saturdays. Other coaching includes toddler tennis which is a program designed for 2-4 year olds. BIOfit is a fast paced fun 1 hour fitness class on a tennis court with music pumping. Open for anyone high school and adult male or female, Hot Hits is an introductory coaching program playing plenty of fun games in a 1 hour class with a number of coaches, Rookie,

TRATFORD MEN’S SHED

Unfortunately this was John's last outing with the Shed and he has decided to move to other interests. He was a foundation member and had served a time as a most successful President. A skilful craftsman who produced very saleable items such as a cubby house, children sized table and chair and dog kennels etc. This earned much needed funds for the Shed to enable it to get some working capital. His friendly nature and helpful advice will be sadly missed. No group can lose such talent without it effecting their overall ability to meet their

Recently Dennis, that man with the big heart and big smile, had another milestone Birthday. Many congratulations and as we have noticed it still has not slowed him down from doing those wee jobs that he faithfully carries out. It is much appreciated.

The work in the Shed at this time is making five Benches, six foot long, for Stratford Primary School.

We have a new temporary home at Pine Lodge, which provides both an indoor space, out of the weather, and plenty of outdoors for games like spotlight tiggy.

On the renovations side, it’s be great to see the old roof removed and replaced, all done in super quick time.

More updates to come as Simon and his team from SJC Homes Pty Ltd work through all the changes.

TRATFORD HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Twilight Faire Day at the Shakesfeare Festival on 4 May was quite a success for the Historical Society. As this event started later in the day it was not possible to serve our “Avonshire Teas”, however the Museum and “George’s Shed” were open. We were very pleased to welcome so many visitors of all ages including young families and appreciated the support from the Community as the Faire Day is an annual fundraiser for us.

We would like to thank everyone who has added items to our collection for the current display of bottles, tins and containers in our new cabinets.

A special thanks to Mitch from Woolenook Nursery, Maffra for establishing some Yellow Diuris Orchids in our especially (rabbit proof) fenced off area where we are protecting some remnants of Gippsland Grasslands.

A close look at the Honour Board at sporting clubs reveal a number of long-time committee members who have given hundreds of hours of service to their club. A visiting grandchild asked Dennis Young recently why his name was on one of the rolls 10 times in a row!

Dennis has been the secretary of the Board of Management since 2009, giving him the honour of the name most listed on that roll.

At the AGM on Monday he stepped out of this role.

Congratulations on a job well done Dennis. As a dedicated secretary he has kept members informed of all that is happening at the local regional and state levels over those 10 seasons.

A plaque at the cemetery will give dates of birth and death of a person, but rarely tells the story of each life. I recently heard the story of Jennifer Hebe Boyd, whose death at age 33 was a tragic loss to her family and to all she served.

Stratford Library Jenny, or Jen to her Opening Hours family, was born in 1945 to Alan and Ada Boyd, and was Monday, Wednesday & raised and educated in Friday Gippsland. Qualifying as a specialist nurse, she worked in Alice Springs and then travelled for some time through Europe. She arrived in Rhodesia in 1971/2 and accepted a post as a community health nurse in 1974 from the Ministry of Health working in the rural areas of Mashonaland. She visited isolated outposts and as the war for independence in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe (19691980) progressed, and the risks increased, she accepted armed guards, despite her misgivings.

Jenny had only just become engaged to an American lecturer based in Salisbury and after their planned marriage on 28 November 1978 they were intent on emigrating to West Virginia in the USA. Tragedy struck two

members for their support in what was declared a successful season.

Bingo continues to attract regular patrons on a Friday night and the club is always looking for additional people to come along and enjoy the social atmosphere.

Special commendations were extended at the AGM to long time organisers and coordinators of Bingo Graeme Bland, John Marshall and Des Phillips.

Following the release of the new format for midweek pennant, the club is planning to increase the number of teams entered in the next season of competition.

New club members are always welcome. Soup days are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, and the Saturday social bowls will continue until further notice.

The vehicle hit a landmine. Escaping relatively unharmed from the blast they were cut down in a hail of fire from a ZANLA (Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army) gang lying in ambush.

Sister Boyd (aged 33) was posthumously awarded the Order of the Legion of Merit (Civil) in May 1979, the award given to her parents at the Mercy Hospital. Her name was also placed in the Nurses’ Bay of the Anglican Cathedral in Salisbury.

“She loved Rhodesia and its people and felt she was helping” said her brother Colin. “She was very brave and had great faith. She had a lot of friends and no fear for her own safety,” said her mother Ada. Jenny is interred in the Lawn Section of the Stratford Cemetery.

As a user, you need to be careful with all types of home heating and it’s important to be aware of the risks involved with using all fixed and portable heating appliances.

Heaters can include: • Fixed electrical appliances • Fixed gas powered appliances • An open fire • Wood heater/slow combustion heaters • Portable heaters including electrical, gas and kerosene Fires caused by heating increase during winter months Heating Safety Tips • Ensure heaters are installed, maintained and operated according to manufacturer’s instructions • Turn off all heating devices before leaving home or going to sleep • Drying clothes and other items must be kept at least one metre away from all heating • Children must be supervised near all types of heating. Maintain a safe distance between children and heating • For portable heating appliances choose models that have automatic safety switches that turn the heater off if tipped over • Keep portable electric heaters away from wet areas to avoid the possibility of electric shock

Open Fire Safety Tips • Always use a fire screen in front of an open fire • Extinguish open fires before leaving home or going to sleep • Ensure ashes are cold before discarding • Chimneys and flues should be cleaned annually • Keep wood and other combustibles at least one metre away from fire • Children must be supervised near open fires.

Maintain a safe distance between children and heating • Only burn dry, clean wood • Brick chimneys and gas heaters should be checked before winter to prevent fires and carbon monoxide poisoning (Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless gas that can be produced

Nathan and Tania have now finished their rally from Perth to Darwin which was sponsored by the Maffra and District Community Bank. The Shitbox rally is the largest community fund raiser for Cancer Care in Australia. Nathan and Tania set out to raise $8,000 but finished with more than $15,000 – a great effort. In total the 223 teams raised over 2.5 million dollars.

about the damage that rubbish can do to the environment and to help clean up the rubbish have organized a “Bitter on Litter” Day on 1 June. This is a great initiative from younger members of the community, and we are pleased to support it. STRATFORD SINGER SONGWRITERS - AIRLY PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Songwriters would like to thank Gavin and Anna Roberts. The Roberts have offered their continual support over the nine years of the Singer/ Songwriters, providing the perfect venue to host our nights, Gavin always in for a friendly chat at the bar. This is just one of the many events/projects that Anna and Gavin have volunteered countless hours within our community.

The Songwriters enjoyed being part of the Shakespeare Twilight Faire, the music

filled the crisp evening air and added ambience, once again many people volunteered huge amounts of hours to bring the Shakespeare Festival to Stratford.

The Songwriters is also run by a team of people who volunteer their time and efforts to give our community an opportunity and a space to perform original material.

Here is a huge THANKYOU to all the volunteers who give unconditionally to add to the arts culture.

Students celebrated achieving 50 ACE blocks with an afternoon at Aqua Energy, Sale.

ACE behaviour is recognised by showing the school values of Respect, Attitude, Co-operation & Environment. Students are reminded daily of expected behaviour and prompted constantly to monitor themselves.

Next Songwriters night is on Friday 31 May, doors open at 6.30 for a 7.00 start. Would love to see you there, bar open and Segue Cafe (run by volunteers).

Airly PS came second at the Sale Rural Cluster cross country event. Held around Lake Guthridge in Sale, students of all ages took part, challenging themselves to run the whole way without stopping. Congratulations to the students who went on to compete at the Division level under the Sale Rural Cluster banner.

All staff have had professional learning about the ‘Zones of Regulation’. Introduced to all classes, the ‘zones’ gives students the language to talk about how they are feeling and to learn strategies to cope with how they are feeling. This learning is part of our social and emotional learning.

Students need to self-regulate their feelings and behaviour in order to achieve their best learning outcomes.

The Artiebus took students for a tour of the Gippsland Art Gallery. This was followed by the reading of ‘Alpacas with Maracas’ for the National Simultaneous Storytime at the Port of Sale. This event is supported by thousands of students around Australia being read the same story at the same time.

Enrolments for 2020 can be made at any time, and we invite prospective families to visit to see what Airly PS has to offer.

Here we are half way through our second term of the year and it is fantastic to see the growth in learning taking place with our students. We continue working to develop a growth mindset for our students and our staff with a focus on learning from our mistakes, building strategies to help our future planning, asking for help, developing grit, working in teams and showing gratitude and self-control. These ideas run through all our classroom programs, in the playground and, we are hoping, into the futures of our students.

This year we have been fortunate to be included in a special maths program. The program means that we have a specialist maths teacher at our school for the next two years. The teacher is working closely with classroom teachers to increase maths understandings through engaging tasks that require students to show their learning in many different ways. Over the two years we will take the opportunity to develop and extend our programs with the aim of having even greater outcomes for all our students.

Our cross-country team recently participated in the Heyfield and District School Sports Association run. Congratulations to all runners and a special mention to Bailey, who made it through to the next level run at Yarram and has now made it through to the Lardner Park run later this term. Go Bailey.

This we held our first M8s Day to celebrate the diversity within our school. We discovered we have ancestry from all over the world, as well as our own indigenous students. Students delved into the different foods we have that are influenced by other countries.

Pizza was a favourite! If you are passing by keep a look out for fabulous sign that has been designed by our students. We’d like to thank all the staff who organised the great morning of activities.

Combined Schools Shakespeare production of Macbeth. They worked hard for over a term to learn their lines and become familiar with stage craft. We would like to thank the Shakespeare committee for making this annual opportunity available to our students. We can’t wait to see what’s on the horizon for 2020.

The fun continues at Stratford Playgroup this term with lots of sensory play! Oats, coloured rice, pasta, stones, sand, water and colourful waterbeads have been mixed, scooped, poured, squeezed, squished, bounced, and even tasted, creating lots of mess, excitement and fun!

I

T’S A GIRL’S LIFE - ELLA-ROSE SPENCE

WW1… A period of time spent with what point? Now I probably don’t know a lot but having the same topic for both English and history, you pick up a few things along the way. Like the fact most of the soldiers didn’t even know why they were fighting. So why did they? Well, to support their Mother Country, that Country being Britain. When the war broke out Britain called along Australia, our opposition leader Andrew Fisher promised that Australia as a Nation would support Britain until the last man standing. Being led by the British in earlier days we had come to be as followers, this is why they called Britain their ‘Mother Country.’ Individuals enlisted because they believed it was their duty, they also didn’t want to pass by what they thought was their only opportunity of an adventure. For men who didn’t enlist and wear the uniform, women would give them a white feather, this feather represented cowardice. Being in the war also gave them a pay rise, and showed their loyalty to Britain.

There were many journals/diaries written and this is how we came to know not only what happened but the emotions of the soldiers. Even the letters they wrote home gave us insight of what the soldiers went through…

War Horse a novel written by Michael Morpurgo, is an insight of the war but not just through his perspective or a soldiers. This novel is written from the horse's perspective, (interpretation by Michael Morpurgo). We need not only to thank our soldiers but our fighting horses. This novel shows us how innocent they were and they didn’t get to choose or enlist they were auctioned and sold to the war.

They were sent on ships and into cavalries, many not making it home. The novel War Horse is about a horse (Joey) who grows up on a farm with a drunken owner, but his son (Albert) becomes Joey’s best friend. Then when Albert’s father becomes broke he sells Joey,

and he has to go to war. I won’t spoil any more but it is an emotional but inspiring novel.

No exact quantities are required for this recipe!

Ingredients Pumpkin (obviously!) - type and quantity of your choosing 1 Potato or 2 if using a large quantity of pumpkin 1 Apple - granny smith or some other tart variety Vegetable stock - powder or liquid your choice of spices – any combination of e.g. turmeric, cumin, chilli, garam masala, harissa, ginger Black pepper Coconut milk to finish Method Peel pumpkin, potato and apple. Roughly dice and add to pot with stock or stock powder and water to almost cover the contents. Bring to the boil then simmer until all is well softened. Puree with stick mixer or in blender. Adjust seasonings if needed. Add coconut milk to taste, about half a small tin depending on quantity of soup prepared.

The flu isn’t like the common cold, it can hit quickly and last for a few weeks, meaning time off work or school and staying away from family and friends. Nominations are now open for the inaugural Wellington Youth Awards.

These awards have been established to celebrate and acknowledge the achievements of young people in Wellington across a range of areas.

There are eight award categories, recognising the importance of being a carer, overcoming difficulties, employability, volunteering, arts, trade and advocacy.

“Young people are making tremendous contributions to our communities in Wellington, and we often

don’t recognise the great variety of ways in which young people contribute,” Mayor Alan Hall said.

“We hope that these awards will build a communal sense of awareness and pride in the contributions young people are making in our communities and encourage everyone to put in a nomination.”

Ecumenical Shakespeare Evensong at Holy Trinity We joined with others from Holy Trinity Anglican and St Patrick’s Catholic Church on Sunday 28 April, to celebrate a special Evensong as part of the Shakespeare Festival.

EAR EDITOR

We were distressed by reading last month’s Town Crier due to a ‘Letter to the Editor’ on page 9. That letter denies a rumour that residents in Fitzroy St are trying to stop our Christmas lights display in Fitzroy St. We approached the Shire to see if we could get a permit to run a BBQ along with our usual lights display for this coming Christmas. Donations made at the display go to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal.

I was informed by the Shire that due to the number of complaints from Fitzroy St residents about the lights, sound and vehicles that result from the display, the Shire would most likely not grant the permit.

We are disappointed that people have to go to the shire with complaints, instead of realising it is all about the children, Christmas and Charity.

Royal Baby Shower Much fun was had at our special baby shower, which celebrated Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry’s first child, Archie. A lovely collection of baby gifts was passed on to Uniting in Sale for distribution to young mums. Thank you to all who attended.

Visit from Moderator The Moderator of the Uniting Church in Victoria and Tasmania visited St Andrew’s on Mother’s Day, Sunday 12 May. We were delighted to have her as our guest preacher and to hear about her role as the Church’s regional leader.

Thy Kingdom Come At St Andrew’s we are planning to join in the worldwide Ecumenical movement, Thy Kingdom Come, in praying for our local community.

Outing to Sale Water Tower On Monday 13 May, many of our folk visited the recently completed renovation of the Sale Water Tower for a special guided tour led by local historian Peter Synan. It was lovely to see the completed restoration of the original brick water tower, which was built in 1888.

TRATFORD SHAKESPEARE ASSOCIATION

AND WHAT OF THE WOMEN IN WILL'S LIFE? Well, we probably know more about the women in his plays than about those he actually knew.

And those who appear in his plays are never insignificant. Juliet is clearly central in "Romeo and Juliet." Lady Macbeth dominates much of the early scenes in "Macbeth." Clearly, Cleopatra drives much of the action in "Antony and Cleopatra. And the three sisters in "King Lear" play important parts in the King's fading years.

Some are victims of violence, Desdemona, for example, in "Othello." Some initiate violence. Lady Macbeth is clearly an example here. Some remain loving and true to their principles.

Cordelia never loses her love for her father. The other two sisters remain, from the outset, harsh, grasping and unprincipled.

Some love. Others hate.

None is incidental to the action.

Now, did the real women in Shakespeare's life influence his development of characters in his plays? Well, I guess we don't

really know.

Anyway, today, let us look at one person who was obviously important in his life. His mum.

Mary Arden was born in in 1537 and died in 1608. She was the daughter of a gentleman farmer in Warwickshire. The family had lived there at Glebe Farm since before the Norman Conquest.

Mary inherited the farm and it remained a working farm until quite recently. Bought by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in 1930, it is a must see place for anyone visiting the area now.

She married John Shakespeare at aged 20. It might have been unusual for the daughter of a gentleman farmer to marry the son of a poorer tenant farmer. But the couple moved into Henley Street, Stratford and had eight children, some of whom died in infancy. Among those who survived, was our poet.

The house in Stratford is probably the most famous dwelling to be found anywhere. Certainly it has been visited by millions of people.

Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne occupies the throne, and her close friend Lady Sarah governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne's ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing, and Abigail sees a chance to return to her aristocratic roots.
