Learning Day

JUNE 9, 2025

OVERVIEW

On Monday, June 9, the entire Senior School will be off the regular timetable and engaged in service learning activities in the school and in the community.

WHY?

This is a great chance to learn through serving others, to gain new, real-world experiences, to have fun with friends and to imagine ways to volunteer, work and play in the future.

Every student has been assigned to an activity. This document will has a brief description of each activity, along with a list of students assigned. Students should find out which activity they’re a part of and any preparation they should do in advance.

If students or families have any questions, they can ask their advisory teachers. If they still need extra help, please email philip.brownhill@stratfordhall.ca.

NEW FOUNTAIN SHELTER

+ ACT NOW CLUB PARTNERSHIP

This experience includes two meaningful parts focused on community care and support.

Part 1: Students will begin the day in the Idea Lab, where they will prepare food to be delivered to New Fountain Shelter. The group will be divided into small teams, each responsible for a different part of the food preparation process. All ingredients will be ready in the space when students arrive. This portion will run from 8:45 - 10:30am.

Part 2: At 10:45am, students will travel by bus to New Fountain Shelter (356 East Hastings). There, they will have the opportunity to deliver the prepared food and receive a short tour from staff to learn more about the shelter’s work. The group will return to Stratford Hall by 11:45am. It is important that students are on time, as the bus is needed for another pickup after this trip.

This is a valuable opportunity to make a direct impact and learn more about how local organizations support those in need.

KINBRACE + BAKE SALE CLUB

PARTNERSHIP

This event includes three parts and will move quickly, but it offers a meaningful and hands-on way to support refugee resettlement in our community.

Part 1: At 9:00am, students will meet in front of the Big Top and travel together by bus to Kinbrace, a residence for refugee claimants located in East Vancouver. Once there, students will receive a short tour and learn about the organization’s work from staff, many of whom are former refugees. The group will depart Kinbrace around 10:00am and return to Stratford Hall by 10:30am.

Part 2: At 10:30am, students will move into the Idea Lab kitchen to begin preparing baked goods. There may be a brief overlap with another group using the space. Students will work in teams to bake and package items with support from staff volunteers.

Part 3: From 12:00 to 12:30pm, students will set up and run a bake sale in the MYP and/or DP areas, depending on the group’s plan.

After the event, students will count the proceeds and make a donation to Kinbrace. This is a great opportunity to combine learning, action, and community impact in one eventful morning.

After attendance, students will meet in the Grade 8 space and travel by bus to the Mount Fromme parking lot in North Vancouver. The bus ride will take approximately 30 minutes.

At the site, students will meet with staff from the North Shore Mountain Bike Trail Association, who will lead the group to their project area. All tools will be provided, but students and staff should bring their own work gloves. Trail work will run from about 9:30 to 11:30am.

At 11:30am, the group will return by bus to Stratford Hall, arriving around noon. Please dress for the weather and wear clothes that can get dirty.

FRESH ROOTS URBAN

FARMING PROJECT

In this event, students will join a large group for a fun and hands-on outdoor experience at the Fresh Roots Schoolyard Farm, a community garden located at Vancouver Technical Secondary.

After meeting in the Grade 7 space, students will walk together to the Van Tech field (about 2 km, or a 30 - 40 minute walk). The entrance is via Grandview Highway. Once there, Fresh Roots staff will lead students through a series of garden-based activities focused on sustainability, food systems, and community building.

At 11:30am, students will begin the walk back. Grade 7 students will remain with a teacher chaperone, while Grade 8 students may be dismissed for lunch on Commercial Drive. Usual school rules for lunch off-campus will apply.

This is a great chance to connect with nature, work as a team, and learn about growing food in an urban setting. Please dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor activities.

RENFREW PARK INVASIVE SPECIES

REMOVAL

This event gives students the chance to learn about and help with an important urban habitat restoration project.

Students will meet in the Grade 6 space and then travel by bus to Renfrew Community Park dog park parking lot (on Renfrew Street, between 20th and 21st). The bus ride takes about 10 minutes.

At the site, students will work with a facilitator from Still Moon Arts Society. The morning will include two parts: first, students will visit the boardwalk near 22nd Street to learn about the Still Creek habitat and efforts to restore this local salmon stream. Next, students will help remove invasive plant species from Renfrew Community Park. Gloves and tools will be provided.

Since this will be a longer morning, there will be a short break to rest and recharge.

Students will return to Stratford Hall by bus around noon. Please note that the bus may be slightly delayed due to another pickup.

Please dress for outdoor work and bring gloves if you have them.

IMMIGRANT SETTLEMENT SERVICES OF BC PARTNERSHIP

A group of Stratford Hall student leaders will have the special opportunity to welcome newly arrived refugee families staying at the ISS of BC residence. For many of these families, this will be their first interaction with Canadian youth. Our goal is to help make them feel happy, safe, and welcomed in their new community.

After attendance, students will meet in the DP foyer and walk together (about 10 minutes) to the ISS of BC residence at 2610 Victoria Drive. There, they will meet the families and accompany them back to the PYP Gym.

Students will arrive at the PYP Gym around 9:30 and will lead a variety of games and activities in small groups (details to be finalized).

At 11:00am, there will be a break for snacks and refreshments.

At 11:30am, the group will walk back to the ISS of BC residence to say goodbye to the families.

Students will be dismissed on Commercial Drive for lunch at 11:45am.

This is a wonderful chance to connect, support, and share kindness with newcomers to our community.

MOSAIC SENIORS MUSICAL THEATRE PARTNERSHIP

This activity continues Stratford Hall’s partnership with the Mosaic Newcomer Seniors Musical Theatre group, offering students a fun and meaningful way to connect with seniors through theatre improv games.

After attendance, students will meet in Studio C and walk to the Commercial Drive SkyTrain station. From there, they will take the Expo Line to Joyce-Collingwood station and walk to 5575 Boundary Road, arriving around 9:30am.

Students will participate in theatre improv games with the seniors, led by Andrea, the group’s coordinator.

The group will depart around 11:30am and return to Commercial Drive by SkyTrain. Students in Grade 8 and up may be dismissed at Commercial Drive for lunch.

This is a great chance to engage creatively and build intergenerational connections.

LAKEVIEW SENIORS HOME CONCERT

This activity is part of Stratford Hall’s ongoing partnership with Lakeview Seniors Center, where students have the opportunity to share music and connect with senior community members.

After attendance, students will meet in the music room to gather instruments and equipment. The gear will be loaded into a vehicle and transported to Lakeview Seniors Center while students walk to the center.

Once everyone arrives, students will help set up the instruments. When the residents are ready, students will perform music for about one hour. After the performance, students will assist in packing up and returning the instruments to the music room.

This is a rewarding chance to share your musical talents and brighten someone’s day.

COPLEY COMMUNITY ORCHARD PARTNERSHIP

This event gives students the opportunity to support the Copley Community Orchard, a valued local green space.

After attendance, students will meet in the MYP library and walk about 20 minutes to the orchard at 3587 Copley Street.

From around 9:30 to 11:30am, students will work alongside Copley volunteers on various gardening tasks. Because it may be a long morning for younger students, there will be short breaks built into the schedule.

Students will leave the orchard around 11:30. Those in Grade 8 and up may be dismissed at Chance Cafe for lunch.

This is a great way to connect with nature and contribute to your community.

CANADIAN BLOOD SERVICES BLOOD DRIVE

This event offers Grade 11 students a meaningful opportunity to donate blood for the first time while student leaders gain valuable experience organizing the event as part of their CAS/Capstone Project.

At least one week before the event, all donors need to create accounts with Canadian Blood Services and book a donation appointment. On the day, after attendance, students will meet in Production Central. Donors should bring valid ID. There is no rush to leave since the first appointment starts at 11:25am. Student leaders will organize the morning activities, which might include some free time to get snacks.

By about 10:30am, the group will travel together by public transit to the Canadian Blood Services center at 4750 Oak Street.

Once there, students will wait for their appointments and complete their donations. The last appointment should finish around 12:30pm.

Students will return to Stratford Hall by a Canadian Blood Services shuttle.

This is a valuable chance to make a difference in the community through blood donation.

After attendance, students will meet on the MYP roof where Ms. Ticinovic will guide them through the assembly process.

If there is extra time, Ms. T. and the student leaders can work on other Gardening Club projects.

This is a great chance to develop practical skills and contribute to our school’s gardening efforts.
