PROJECT OVERVIEW Millenkamp Cattle, a dairy and feedlot operation employing more than 300 full-time workers in southern Idaho, had plans to convert a portion of their feedlot in Cassia County into a dairy. They needed approval from the county commission to make this transition, but given that historically, they had mainly operated in other Magic Valley counties, they needed help building a presence and a known brand in Cassia County.

We started by getting to know Bill Millenkamp, and understanding both his history in the industry and area, and his plans for the future. Next, we developed a range of materials that they could distribute both to county commissioners and that would allow them to have an online presence, a critical component of brand management in our digital-first culture.

Creating Jobs and Prosperity Bill and Susie Millenkamp are eager to play a key role in the growth of one of Idaho’s top industries by significantly expanding their dairy production. By converting their East Valley feedlot into a dry-lot rotary dairy, they could begin producing hundreds of thousands of pounds of milk per day. The economic impact of this new dairy would be immense not only to Cassia County, but the surrounding communities as well.

With the Millenkamps investing an additional $70 million in converting the feeding operations and building the dairy, the total local property tax payments remitted to Cassia County would increase by several hundred thousand dollars annually. As it stands today, the East Valley Millenkamp tax receipts make it one of the largest business taxpayer in Cassia County. At full production as a dairy, it would generate in excess of $200 million in milk sales annually and could become the county’s largest taxpayer.

The multiplier effects for such economic activity in Cassia County would be widely felt throughout the community. For starters, 250 good paying jobs will be created with workers who will live and spend money locally. Total payroll will be approximately $12 million.

Information supplied by the United Dairymen of Idaho indicates that every new $1 invested in dairy industry wages creates an additional $4.70 in wages at other jobs. Every job that is created in the dairy industry creates as many as 6 other jobs. In Idaho, every $1 a dairy generates also generates another $5.80 in economic activity. This includes wages, proprietary income, return to capital and taxes on production and inputs.

State-of-the-Art Operations Millenkamp Cattle LLC in Jerome is considered one of the finest, most technologically advanced calf ranches in America. Calves arrive every day, starting at a day old, from dozens of loyal customers and stay as long as seven months. Raising newborn calves, as Bill points out, “is one of the hardest things you can do,” and the Millenkamps have made it their life’s work. In addition to finely tuned instincts (a “sixth sense” about calves), they’ve developed cutting-edge processes, a state-of-the-art milk mixing center, and the highest standards of sanitation, health monitoring and care. The painstaking attention to detail has resulted in industry-leading performance.

In addition to the primary calf raising facility, the Millenkamps operate dairies in the Magic Valley. They also own the 11,000-acre East Valley farm and feed lot near Malta in Cassia County. Much like their facilities in Jerome, the East Valley facility upholds the highest health and hygiene standards in the industry.

The Millenkamps understand that maintaining such standards produce the healthiest cows and therefore the best milk and the best beef.

The East Valley facility is so well managed and maintained; first-time visitors sometimes mistake it for being brand new, when, in fact, it was put into operation in 2008. Visitors note exceptionally clean pens and grounds, a well organized and highly efficient layout, scenic isolation, and a focus on worker and animal safety and welfare. The East Valley site also boasts a unique, hightech mill for precise and efficient feeding.

Idaho and the rest of the world needs more milk.
