This past year, with the culmination of our broad consultation and reflection, our 2017-2022 Institutional Strategy was launched and kicked into high gear.

Today, our world needs solutions that span boundaries – not create them.

We need answers to our communal challenges that have local roots but global effects.

We need a future deeply rooted in the timeless values of the past.

There has never been a moment quite like the present for the Coady International Institute.

Grounded in the ethos of the Antigonish Movement, our programs span the kind of global community depicted in this drum painting by 2016 Coady Chair in Social Justice, Alan Syliboy.

We are making a difference in the lives of people thousands of miles away from Nova Scotia.

What is more, emboldened by a new vision and ambitious strategy, we’re just getting started.

The process of forging a vision and ambitious strategy for the Coady International Institute reinforced who we are: a one-of-a-kind educational institution, leading in citizen-led, asset-based community development.

Our graduates are social innovators, scholars and leaders in local and global communities – improving life and strengthening communities in over 130 countries.

Coady’s roots are in the Antigonish Movement, a social movement that turns 100 next year. Never wavering from its core values has kept the institution – and St. Francis Xavier University – at the forefront of building leadership to better lives close to home and around the world.

Our new strategic momentum ensures that Coady’s reach and influence remains relevant and vital moving forward. We will focus on enriching the lives of women, youth and Indigenous peoples. We will continue to seek creative ways to teach, learn and innovate with community leaders while forging new partnerships with colleagues – at StFX and other institutes, and with governments and NGOs aimed at strengthening the impact of our work.

REACHING ACROSS GENERATIONS

Africa is home to 54 countries. So it’s entirely fitting that the latest recipient of an award created in honour of a StFX graduate who deeply loved the continent comes from Swaziland, one of the smallest African nations, but also one of the countries most affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Mabuyakhulu Abingo Siphiwe Phumla, one of 39 participants from 22 countries who attended the 2016 Coady Diploma in Development Leadership program, aims to limit the ravages of the terrible disease.

“The work I have been doing with them has given me the opportunity to speak to the world about the social and economic challenges they face every day.”

Fleming, who dedicated her life to fighting poverty in Africa, would surely approve. During its 17 years, the award, which was created by her friends and classmates, has been given to Coady Development Leadership program graduates from nine different African countries.

Ms. Mabuyakhulu is Swaziland’s first recipient.

The recipient of Coady’s Katherine Fleming International Development Award is the founder and director of Compassionate Swaziland, a charity that works with schools and community groups to provide comprehensive care and support for HIV/AIDSaffected children and other young people.

Her organization educates Swazis about sexual and reproductive health rights, and works to prevent gender-based violence, a primary cause of new HIV infections. In 2015, Compassionate Swaziland won a prestigious Global Rising Stars award for its work improving the lives of vulnerable children in two regions of the country.

“It is an honour for me to accept this award…on behalf of the women and children I work with,” Ms. Mabukaykhulu says of the Katherine Fleming Award.

A REACH THAT TRANSCENDS

Coady Chair in Social Justice Alan Syliboy He still lives in the place where he was born, the Millbrook First Nations community. Yet everything about Alan Syliboy – his artistic vision, his notion of social justice, the scope of his conscience – transcends geographical boundaries.

All of which makes the Mi’kmaq artist, cultural icon and social justice advocate the right person to explore the sweeping range of concerns facing First Nations communities – and a perfect choice as the first Indigenous person to hold the Coady Chair in Social Justice.

“My art,” says Syliboy, who received an honorary degree from StFX this year, “will be used as a vehicle to assist in expressing our ideas.”

His ambitious, award-winning work – which has been shown all over the world – has been presented to monarchs, turned into animated movies and commissioned by clients as prestigious as the Olympic Games.

He now plans to use it to address environmental questions, as well as a host of issues for First Nations communities, including the countless missing and murdered Indigenous women and the lack of First Nations’ housing options.

Leadership like this is precisely why the Coady Chair of Social Justice was created: to engage the University and broader community on innovations and practice that focus on some of the world’s most complex social justice issues.

Dr. Syliboy, meanwhile, will further strengthen the decades-old links between StFX and First Nations communities. In particular he plans to use the chair to establish a deeper connection between the university and the nearby Paqtnkek Mi’kmaq Nation – proving that his reach extends both locally and globally.

Life can be hard for members of the LGBT community on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia.There, colonial-era laws criminalizing homosexuality mean they endure constant persecution and discrimination.

Though the so-called “gross indecency” provision which carries a five-year maximum jail sentence is rarely enforced, the laws, in the words of one commentator, “validate homophobia and bias-motivated violence”.

A GLOBAL REACH

Maria Fontenelle, communications and programmes officer for the advocacy group Eastern Caribbean Alliance for Diversity and Equality, wants all of that to change.

She’s doing her part to add to that number. Among other things, Maria has been trying to use economics to spur tolerance in Saint Lucia, where tourism is big business. As she points out, the global spending power of LGBT tourism is thought to be more than $140 billion – a tiny chunk of which would do wonders for the impoverished local economy.

Indeed, through her work, lessons learned at Coady International Institute are helping ensure that one of the Antigonish-based organization’s abiding goals – basic human rights – comes to a marginalized Caribbean group that dearly needs them.

No wonder Maria received a scholarship from the Marcelle et Jean Coutu Family Foundation. The foundation has been supporting Coady’s scholarships for women leaders since 2007, with an objective to empower and equip community leaders from around the world to make a positive difference in their own communities.

“The Coady Institute’s combination of financial support, housing and program structure has allowed me to build on my knowledge and skill in a manner that I would not have been able to otherwise,” Maria, who completed a 2016 Diploma in Development Leadership, says. “It has been a respite and refresh for many of us who suffer the negative impacts of our advocacy, which is a long road with few tangible wins.”

REACHING ACROSS THE AIRWAVES

The devastation was massive when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake flattened the village of Barpak in north-central Nepal in April, 2015. 8,500 died in the disaster. Another 20,000 were injured and 200,000 homes were obliterated.

“The earthquake destroyed all regular communication channels,” says Bhumiraj Chapagain, the manager of Sharecast (Media) Initiative in nearby Kathmandu. “There was no electricity or transportation, and people had no way to communicate their needs or find out what was happening elsewhere.”

A year later, Barpak, the epicentre of the earthquake, was still in ruins. But the snap, crackle and hiss of radio had returned to the village, thanks in large part to Mr. Chapagain, an alumna (2015) of Coady’s Diploma in Development Leadership.

He didn’t single-handedly get Radio Barpak up and running. Plenty of donations were needed before the village’s new community station hit the airwaves.

Now Radio Barpak is playing a key role in the village’s rebuilding process. Re-opened communication lines helped mobilize people for emergency preparedness. The station has also bolstered community development projects, and generally provides support, information and comfort as Barpak gets back on its feet.

All the skills that Mr. Chapagain honed at Coady were on full display in bringing radio to the village. “The diploma program contained many elements of community engagement and participation, which support my work in community radio here in Nepal,” he says.Yet another instance of Coady International Institute helping make a difference thousands of miles away.

REACHING OUT TO YOUTH

As a young woman from sub-Saharan Africa, Mallah Tabot knew the heart-wrenching facts: HIV infection rates in the region are the highest in the world.

An alarmingly high percentage of teenage girls in her home country of Cameroon have been pregnant at least once; and many young Cameroonian women remain at constant risk of early and forced marriages.

Despite all of that, young people in her country lack access to basic information about sexual health and their bodies.

The Coady International Institute alumna decided to do something about that. As a reproductive health activist and CEO of an NGO that uses theatre and art to push for social progress, she fights tirelessly to improve the lives of young women in Cameroon.

To this end, in 2016 her organization launched the Ndolo360 mobile app to provide judgment-free education, information and services on sexual and reproductive health for Cameroon’s teenagers, adolescents and other young people.

“We’re very happy that we’re shaking the status quo and looking at alternative ways of providing this vital service for young people in Cameroon and hopefully throughout Africa,” says Ms. Tabot, the recipient of a Queen’s Young Leaders award and a United Nations World Summit award for digital innovation.

At Coady she earned certificates in advocacy and citizen engagement, and community development leadership by women. “I met women from all around the world, all of them a lot older than I was; all of them so brilliant and inspiring,” says the 27-year-old, adding that the StFX campus was where she learned her first “leadership moves.”

REACHING FOR THE ARCTIC MOON

It’s a long way from Antigonish, N.S. where she went to university, to Salluit, the remote Arctic village where Maggie MacDonnell taught. But it is longer again to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

There, earlier this year, the former Coady International Institute Youth in Partnership International intern was honoured with the prestigious $1-million (U.S.) Global Teacher Prize.

It is hard to imagine a place more different from Dubai than Salluit, reachable only by air, where the winter temperatures routinely dip below minus-25 celsius.

In the village’s high school Ms. MacDonnell encounters numerous challenges such as teen suicide, dropouts, pregnancies or sexual abuse.

The StFX Class of 2002 grad – who taught girls who were dropouts, or on the verge of doing so – then started a life skills programme specifically for girls, and created a partnership with the daycare centre that enabled her students to work in the classroom with experienced day-care workers.

Ms. MacDonnell also became the fitness coordinator for the village of 1,300 – starting a running club that brought young Inuit athletes to race in Nova Scotia and Hawaii.

“I’m…a coach, I’m also a mentor, I’m a bit of a motivator,” she told the CBC after beating out 20,000 other nominees for the prize. “For some children … I’m also somewhat of a parental figure, and older sibling, and aunt and extra mother.”

Ms. MacDonnell, who grew up not far from Antigonish, spent five years volunteering and working in Sub-Saharan Africa, largely in the field of HIV/AIDS prevention. She noted feeling awkward about the personal acclaim and plans to put the prize money to good use: to help “reawaken a love for the land” among Inuit youth through an environmental stewardship project.

In 2011, when someone asked Helen Knott what her plans were after completing Coady International Institute’s Indigenous Women in Community Leadership program, one of the things she talked about was serving her British Columbia First Nations community.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

Since attending Coady’s Indigenous Women in Community Leadership program, Helen Knott has campaigned to halt a massive hydroelectric dam in British Columbia.

Knott, a Dane Zaa and Nehiyawak woman from the Prophet River First Nation, meant what she said. Her poems speak powerfully about missing and murdered Indigenous women and the pain of inter-generational trauma. The activist, poet and blogger works tirelessly for Indigenous land rights in Canada where they are under attack from one coast to the other.

Throughout the campaign Knott used her words to focus attention on Indigenous land and water rights and violence against the land and Indigenous women.

The most high-profile demonstration of the latter: the Treaty 8 Justice for the Peace Caravan – a cross-country caravan of First Nations leaders, elders and other community members driving across Canada spreading the word about the importance of halting the massive Site C hydroelectric dam under construction on Treaty 8 territory in northeast British Columbia.

“I think the inspiration to do these things comes down to love,” she has said of her activism. “Love of the land, and love of the people – and that’s the basis of all of it.”

In a memorable video she stood in the Peace River, B.C. landscape, directly challenging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to keep his promises to pay attention to the Indigenous population.

BRINGING THE IMPROBABLE WITHIN REACH

It can be near impossible for a woman to get ahead financially in Zambia. It’s a woeful situation where the HIV/AIDS epidemic is perpetuated by poverty.

Which is where Prisca Kambole, who attended Coady International Institute in 2015 and 2017, comes in.

“The Coady training opened my mind to a world of community-based microfinance,” she explains.

Indeed, there’s a direct link between what Ms. Kambole learned in Antigonish and the economic empowerment approach that her evangelical Christian community development organization, Partners for Life Advancement and Education Promotion, is taking to tackle pressing issues in Zambia.

Ms. Kambole, her five staff and more than 20 volunteers are tackling poverty through an expanding network of savings and credit groups serving Zambia’s Copperbelt region.

Community-based Microfinance 2015 Zambia

Financial resources are a lifeline for Zambian women.

Before she launched her NGO, pregnant girls were dropping out of school at an alarming rate and almost half of the country’s females were married before they hit 18 years of age, miring them in a cycle of poverty.

Now, thanks to Ms. Kambole’s organization, the Copperbelt region is home to 60 savings and credit groups that help women save money and gain access to credit.

Those groups, furthermore, have forged a relationship with an insurance company that provides a valuable service in a country with a sky-high HIV/AIDS infection rate: a tiny monthly premium makes clients eligible for up to $300 in funeral expenses for a family member.

Using lessons learned from Coady Institute, Prisca Kambole is battling HIV/AIDS with economic empowerment.

Prisca Kambole’s organization provides a financial lifeline to Zambian women.

Ms. Kambole’s reach doesn’t end there: she’s leading fundraising efforts to build a school. Down the road she also hopes to package organic honey from Zambia’s forests – and to link her various groups with more formal microfinance institutions, thereby earning increased interest on every client’s savings.

YEAR IN REVIEW

The Institute’s 2017-2022 Institutional Strategy: Towards a Full and Abundant Life for All was launched January 2017.

The Strategy positions three core priorities that define the Institute’s raison d’être – leadership education for transformative change, innovation and knowledge building for citizen-led change, and partnership for collaborative change. These are complemented by three cross-cutting priorities that speak to the local - global dimension of our work, building strategic linkages with the University, and Institutional stewardship and sustainability.

JULY 2016

First of Coady’s 2016 on-campus educational programs for community leaders from Canada and around the globe.They share a common element: equipping individuals and organizations with knowledge and practical tools to address inequality and social challenges in their communities.

Thirty-nine community builders from 22 countries arrive for our 2016 Diploma in Development Leadership. Each summer, Coady welcomes a diverse cohort of practitioners from around the world who, together, learn innovative skills and approaches for leadership in sustainable, citizen-led development. This sharing and co-creation of knowledge is a cornerstone to the diploma program. Program participants build and draw upon a critical and reflective social change framework to enhance their leadership competencies and their abilities to motivate and support people in creating a better world for future generations.

MAY 2016 Internationally renowned artist Alan Syliboy of Millbrook, Nova Scotia is named the fifth Coady Chair in Social Justice at StFX University. Syliboy prompted important conversations, art and study related to Indigenous history, cultural revitalization, reconciliation, and the evolution of Mi’kmaq art as forms of expression.

JUNE 2016 Graduation of the first cohort of OceanPath Fellows. The OceanPath Fellowship provides community-focused experiential learning opportunities for graduating students to become active and effective change-makers, bringing new ideas and working closely with communities to foster sustainable and positive social change in Canada and around the world.

AUGUST 2016 The sixth cohort, counting 16 participants, graduated from the Indigenous Women in Community Leadership program. Keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony was Mary Simon – a prominent Inuit leader, and distinguished Canadian working to rebuild the relationship between the Indigenous Peoples of Canada and Canadians.

Indigenous Women in Community Leadership is an award-winning program for First Nation, Métis and Inuit women. These women build the capacity to be empowered leaders and agents of change capable of strengthening and contributing to the development of their communities.

Coady Institute partnered with McGill University, Queen’s University, University of Ottawa and St. Francis Xavier University to offer this Fellowship.

Caritas’ focus in Latin America is on child protection and gender equality – particularly preventing violence against women – and building up the entrepreneurial skills necessary for women to manage small businesses.

• Senator Murray Sinclair gives a powerful talk at StFX about Canadians’ joint responsibility to heal our relationships with our Indigenous brothers and sisters. Great discussion and sharing on Indigenous education and reconciliation.

OCTOBER 2016 Representatives of PEI women’s organizations met with participants of Coady’s Global Change Leaders program. The group of 17 women from around the world were all leaders in their own right, pushing policy and practice forward in innovative ways. In addition to an Indigenous woman from Canada, countries represented included Mongolia, Cambodia, Nepal, India, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Trinidad, Tobago and Haiti.

• The Right Honourable Paul Martin, 21st Prime Minister of Canada (2003-2006) joined us on the StFX campus for a special discussion with Diploma in Development Leadership participants and Indigenous Women in Community Leadership graduates.

DECEMBER 2016 Yogesh Ghore of Coady International Institute contributes expertise to Rockefeller Foundation study on extreme poverty. Coady’s three-part Innovation Series offers useful knowledge to help academics and community builders explore new ways of thinking, practicing and teaching.

JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2017 Pamela Johnson of Coady International Institute and Xuan Thuy Nguyen of Carleton University publish an important article in the journal “Third World Thematics.”

The article explores possibilities and challenges in facilitating a global dialogue about inclusion and exclusion for girls with disabilities.

Longtime Coady teaching staff members retire after a total of 46 years.

For 26 years, Colleen Cameron shared her wisdom around the world while remaining true to her community activist roots. Antigonish and Nova Scotia are lucky to have her. And we know her many friends and colleagues around the world wish her all the best in her well-earned retirement.

MARCH 2017 As part of Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations, Peace Quest features Moses Coady as one of 150+ Canadians who contributed to world peace.

Moses Coady contributed to peace by improving the lives of others through adult education and cooperatives. A Roman Catholic Priest, adult educator and co-operative entrepreneur, Coady was concerned about the poverty afflicting farmers, fishers, miners and other disadvantaged groups in Eastern Canada and the exodus of maritimers to other parts of Canada.

Peace Quest is a non-profit, non-denominational, and non-partisan organization based in Kingston, Ontario that supports and facilitates peace-building initiatives across Canada.

Joining Coady Institute in 1997, Alison Mathie’s vision for citizen-led change inspired colleagues and participants alike. Her first ABCD publication was followed by multiple works that made Coady a global leader in the field of Asset-Based Community Development, while building the Institute’s platform in action research and writing.

Alison and Colleen have left an indelible mark on our programming, their colleagues and on the lives of thousands of graduates.

COADY PEOPLE Coady’s teaching staff are skilled facilitators who use participatory adult education methods to draw out the insights and experiences of learners, while at the same time introducing new ideas and approaches to societal change.

Young Girl Stays in School

ALUMNI VOICES The Learning from Stories of Change process is used to map the outcomes of our educational programs, make improvements for future participants, and provide insight into transformative adult education.

The following illustrates some of those stories.

“My organization supports village savings and loans associations, made up of a majority of women.

The project succeeded in significantly increasing their income; however, they don’t have control over it as their husbands decide what they do with the money. I succeeded in supporting our local NGO Partner staff to conduct discussions on building support among themselves and discussing their own choices with their husbands. Coady Institute gave me the appropriate resources for this change.”

Inclusive Business Model Improves Livelihoods of Dairy Farmers “I am working on a dairy value chain project and after I joined the Coady I realized some of the implementation strategies needed to be revised… I introduced the inclusive business model to the project… The proposal pointed out how a community-based Digital Milk Measurement machine would help to make both the company and farm profitable…

One of the major milk producers implemented the restructured inclusive business model. This was one of the great achievements we have made from the learning at Coady.”

Sustaining Community Culture and History “I have greatly enjoyed this time at Coady.

What a very special, unique place. My life has been impacted on so many levels. I go back to my community ready to look at things from a different framework in order to positively assist in sustaining our community’s culture, knowledge and history.This is only a small snippet of the education that I have received. Even outside the classroom was an education, as we gathered together as a cohort and learned of one another’s countries, cultures and traditions. Discussing what is working within their respective countries; what is not working and ways in which we can move forward as a global community.The learning, the community, the dialogue, the networking and the relationships that take place here are important. Community Restores Local Market “There are many pressing needs in the community… but the council decided to build a market before anything else… To my surprise no one used the market. It was being vandalized and neglected... At Coady, I learned about appreciative inquiry.

So, I took a survey and people told me that sellers could not trade because there was no water, washrooms and electricity.

This year they drilled a borehole next to the marketand everyone is now using it.

Through the knowledge gained from Coady, I felt complete and as a youth my fear of engaging in development was removed.”

Street Girls Empowered “After my return from Coady, I designed and implemented a program which specifically targeted street girls and empowered them through economic capacity building … I had learned from Coady that promoting democracy does not mean only in the higher level but from the grass roots. So, we gave the young girls the decision-making power about how they want this program to go about. It was a way they could have ownership of the program.”
