The CATHEDRAL TIMES
EASTER 2023 ALLELUIA! CHRIST IS RISEN!
By the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral

Thank you! Thanks to you who prepared the way for holiness and resurrection this past week. It was a Holy Week for us, a Holy Walk with Jesus through processions and prayers, suppers and songs, crosses and blades of growing grass.
Yes, thanks to you, to each of you! You who served so well know who you are. You carried palm branches and sang. You set up altars with vestments and then you took them down. You rehearsed beautiful anthems and choruses. You sang! You prayed. You cleaned floors and polished brass. You vacuumed and swept. You gathered flowers and arranged flowers. You set up a huge bonfire for Easter morning! You locked and secured the building. You carried sound equipment outside and inside. You turned dials and adjusted lights. You distributed service leaflets, and showed people through the darkness with little flashlights.
You carried more crosses! You took up offerings! You made sure we had enough bread and wine for communion. You made sure the Paschal Candle was properly prepared. You lit people’s candles. You rehearsed some more! You arranged more flowers. You read lessons. You prayed intercessions. You preached. You cared for children. You brought friends and family to church itself.
This past Sunday, Easter of 2023, did not just suddenly happen, like a rabbit jumping out of a hat! The beauty and majesty and power and wonder of Easter at the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip happened because holy and faithful people prepared. Devoted people spent hours of their time in such preparation and work. You are those people!
I know that, properly speaking, this church belongs to God! This is God’s church. But the church also, properly speaking, belongs to the people who give to it. Something is not yours if it is only given to you. Something is yours if YOU have given to IT! And you have given to the Cathedral!
Yes, thanks for giving to the Cathedral Parish of St. Philip this past Easter. And thanks for giving throughout the year. It is a great joy for me to walk with you here. I could walk with you as a child of the light throughout the year!
          Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia!

          How Do We Know God?
We have been talking about how we know what we know. This week, Canon Maxwell will focus on the question of how we know what we know about God. We’ll look at scenes from the 2018 film titled “An Ideal Husband,” which is based on a late nineteenth century Oscar Wilde play that revolves around blackmail and political corruption, and touches on themes of public and private honor.

          FARMERS MARKET
FLAVOR FORWARD AT THE CATHEDRAL FARMERS MARKET
The Cathedral Farmers Market has partnered with Flavor Forward to find volunteers, recruit chefs, and feed our neighbors in need. Flavor Forward is a community platform which addresses food insecurity in Atlanta. They work with the Atlanta restaurant scene as well as local high school student volunteers to prepare and deliver nutritious, quality, and delicious meals to Free99Fridge and other charitable organizations.
Atlanta chefs recruited by Flavor Forward simply cook. Flavor Forward pays for the ingredients and containers and then packs and delivers the meals to community partners. The Cathedral Towers was a recent beneficiary of 100 meals cooked up by Chef Candy at Soup Belly. All enjoyed the delicious food and community built around sharing a meal together. The market and Flavor Forward plan to continue delivering meals to the Towers and add our partners at Intown Collaborative Ministries to their regular meal deliveries.
If you're interested in donating your time, talent, or treasure to the Cathedral Farmers Market or Flavor Forward, please contact Nancy Qarmout, nancy@peachtreeroadfarmersmarket.com

            STEWARDSHIP
          MARCH STEWARDSHIP UPDATE
          Pledges through 3/31/2023:
          Amount: $3,240,626
          Number of households: 708

Thank you, as always, for your responsiveness to the 2023 Stewardship Campaign! The parish added 137 pledges totaling more than $535,000 in the month of March. We are still finalizing the numbers, but it looks like we are almost $1,000,000 ahead of where we were at the end of March last year and we have surpassed our household total for all of 2022. We will need to maintain this momentum in order to reach our Wildly Important Goal of $4,050,000 in pledges for the year. To date, the members of the Stewardship Committee have solicited almost 40 small groups, launched a children’s stewardship campaign, written over 530 thank you letters, and staffed the Atrium table on Sunday mornings. In order to stay on track (increasing rate and amount of pledging), we will support from as many households as possible. Join the fun! Please go to make your pledge today: cathedralATL.org/pledge. Thank you!
I/We, with God’s help, pledge $__________ to the ministry of God in Christ, through the 2023 annual operating fund of the Cathedral of St. Philip.

            PASTORAL Care
Whether at work, at home, with friends or teammates, or in more formal helping roles, many of us have been, or will be, called upon to respond to someone who is experiencing a mental-health crisis or considering suicide. The Cathedral is hosting a two-day workshop in one of the world’s leading suicide-intervention models, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). ASIST teaches individuals to provide a skilled intervention to a person who may be having thoughts of suicide and develop a collaborative safety plan to keep them safe and alive.
The cost is $175 for Cathedral members and $250 for nonCathedral members. Payment in full is required at the time of registration. The payment is non-refundable by April 14; and before that date, there is a possibility of up to a 50% refund.

Register at cathedralATL.org/ASIST. For questions, please contact the Rev. Canon Cathy Zappa, czappa@cathedralATL.org.
For many, Mother’s Day can be a complex mixture of joy and gratitude as well as sorrow and regret. The loss of a mother and women whose dreams to become a mother that have been altered due to infertility, miscarriage, or another unwelcome reason can make this day feel heavy. Deep pain often resides beside love. We want to create a space to honor this grief. Please join us on Friday, May 12 from 5–6 p.m. for a support group in the Lanier House led by parishioner and therapist, Carter Monroe, followed by a healing service officiated by Julia Mitchener. We welcome registrations so that we can plan seats accordingly but walk-ins are always welcome. Register at cathedralATL.org/mindful. For questions, please contact julia.mitchener@cathedralATL.org.

          UNITED THANK OFFERING:
WHAT IS YOUR PRAYER TO SHARE?
At the Cathedral, we celebrate the Episcopal United Thank Offering (UTO) every spring and fall, joining Episcopalians worldwide to raise about $1 million every year to support struggling and impacted communities. UTO encourages us to practice gratitude for all the blessings God gives us, with a wonderful UTO Prayer Book to help that practice. This year, UTO is updating its prayer book, and welcomes you to share a prayer of gratitude to inspire others. What is your prayer of gratitude to share? You can find the prayer book and share your prayer at cathedralATL.org/UTO
UTO Sunday is Sunday, May 7. Consider practicing gratitude intentionally for the next month. Then, reflect on those blessings, and make a thank offering at cathedralATL.org/UTO
