It has been STEAM week at St Peter’s 28. This annual event is held to inspire the children and promote Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths which demonstrate the links between these key subjects, and particularly that creativity and the sciences go hand in hand. Leonardo da Vinci artist, inventor, engineer and architect summed this up in his famous quote, “To develop a complete mind: Study the science of art; Study the art of science. Learn to see. Realise that everything connects to everything else.” We began the week with a special guestPoppy, Jack and Charlie’s mummy who told the children all about her job as a design engineer for the Google pixel phone. The children were fascinated hearing about how many different skills and people collaborating that it takes to create a phone, and that anyone can do any job. This is a great message for encouraging both girls and boys to be interested in STEAM. Many thanks to Mrs Gordon for inspiring

the children and taking the time to share her job in STEAM with the school. We definitely have some future design engineers as the children couldn’t wait to have a go at designing their own phones! Throughout the week the children enjoyed a series of STEAM challenges, including making their own water clock and creating a time lapse video, plus a task to design, build and test a way of moving tomatoes without squashing them! In addition, the children had a go at becoming nonfiction book illustrators! Today’s activity is perhaps one for the family over the weekend, and entails a cup stacking competition. Many thanks to Mrs Johnson, Mrs Hall, Mr Allen & Miss Carless for organising such a fabulous week of STEAM activities.

We also began our class assemblies this week to give the children an opportunity to showcase their learning from this term. I was able to see 1A, 1E, 1C and 2C’s assemblies and

I was so impressed with the children’s energy, passion and confidence. From writing to maths, drama to art, science, IT and more, it was a wonderful celebration of just some of the wealth of learning from the term. A big thank you to Mrs Hayden for the musical elements and to all of the class teachers and teaching assistants for preparing the children.

Performance and presentation skills are so important for developing selfesteem and resilience and are transferable skills through school life and beyond.

In the final week of this term, we are looking forward to the remaining class assemblies and then on 20th we have and Easter Activity Day finishing off with a Spring Disco hosted by FoSP.

Just a reminder that term finishes on Friday 22nd at 12 noon.

Congratulations to 1A, 1E, 1C, 2C, 3LS and 3C who have all shared their class assemblies with their families this week. Year 1 performed their own dragon compositions, inspired by Hans Zimmer, with such confidence. They began with a shimmering opening using handheld percussion instruments, led by their own class conductors (Ava, Oscar and Arthur), before moving into a four-note piece using different words from their key text "Tell me a Dragon" . The children all played with a real sense of ensemble, keeping time with each other, working hard to follow the music they had composed. Great work Year 1! 2C set the bar high with the first of the Year 2 assemblies. The children have been studying Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, inspired by how he wrote music which match each of the characters in the story, the children set about composing music for Ratty from their key text "Wind in the Willows". Each group came up with a set of descriptive words which formed the rhythm to the composition. They then thought about how to write a tune to best match Ratty's character on the chime bars. 2C did a great job performing their compositions to their families, there were a few tricky tunes to play! Thursday was the turn of 3LS and 3C. Both classes invited their parents to join them in s special performance of the Blue Danube by Strauss on boomwhackers, it was so lovely to share the experience of performing with everybody, we particularly enjoyed the parent's dancing skills in the middle of the piece! The children also demonstrated their African drumming skills on the djembe drums. I was so impressed with the children's concentration, it is really tricky to play in time and both classes had a great sense of ensemble. I think everyone enjoyed the big drum roll finish, a great way to start Thursday! We're really looking forward to the rest of Year 2 and 3 and all of Reception's assemblies next week, it's so lovely to share all the fabulous learning that takes place in school with our families!
