Closure date for One Stop is announced by Peter McMillan The closure date has been announced for the One Stop store in Abbotsbury Court, St Peter’s. It will shut on Wednesday, August 21, following months of speculation about when that would happen. It has been known since last year that it was earmarked for closure this summer. A One Stop spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we have taken the difficult decision to close our One Stop store on St Peter's Drive in Worcester. “The closure date is August 21, 2019. “This was not a decision that was taken lightly and our priority

has been our colleagues affected and supporting them wherever possible to find alternative roles with One Stop. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their loyalty and continued custom.” The company’s management has not said how many people would lose their jobs as a result of the closure. A knock-on effect of the One Stop store shutting is that the post office that has shared the premises will no longer be able to operate there. Prospects of an alternative post office replacing it within St Peter’s seem remote, despite efforts to find other premises Turn to Page 5

Battenhall residents are being warned not to allow the area to be picked off as an easy target by developers and planners. The warning was issued by the ward’s Green Worcester city councillor Louis Stephen during a meeting of the Friends of Battenhall. Despite having more than 200 members the group has been unable to fill roles including chairman and secretary from residents of the area. Cllr Stephen fears that will hamper residents’ ability to challenge plans to build houses on sites they think should be protected from developers under the South Worcestershire Development Plan (SWDP). The SWDP is a joint initiative between Worcester city and Malvern Hills and Wychavon district councils, which requires 28,000 new homes to be built in south Worcestershire by 2030, as well as additional employment land. Addressing the latest meeting of the Friends group, at St Mark Church in the Cherry Orchard, in Bath Road, Cllr Stephen said: “It’s providing a voice for Battenhall residents. “Places like St Peter’s have a parish council and places like Warndon have a parish council so they have a voice.

n Green space in Battenhall “There’s no real way of feeling the pressure or heat of a mass of people. When it comes to things like the South Worcestershire Development Plan it’s better to be seen as a collective group. “Quite a lot of people are concerned about housebuilding.” He added: “If there’s nobody complaining and nobody wailing about it then we’re an easy target. We need to get our profile up. “We don’t want to be an easy target, picked off.” Cllr Stephen warned that time was pressing in the planning process, with Worcester City Council set to be asked to approve a provisional plan of where houses would go. That would be followed by a six-week consultation, starting in November, and a vote in the council by September, 2020. He explained there was an opportunity for Battenhall residents to express their views about housing proposals by mobilising within the Friends group.

Do you think Battenhall is a community? Tell us your views The question of whether Battenhall is a community in itself or a series of communities was raised during the Friends of Battenhall meeting. It was posed by Alan Tidy, a St Peter’s parish councillor, as members of the Friends group discussed its aims and recruiting volunteers to fill its administrative posts. He said: “Is Battenhall quite a community or is it a series of mini communities?” Worcester city Green councillor

Louis Stephen, who represents Battenhall on the authority, said St Peter’s could stage its annual festival and it felt like a village fete. Mr Tidy explained that there was a clear sense of St Peter’s as a community and questioning whether a “Friends of Cromwell Crescent”, for example, might be more appropriate than a Battenhall-wide group. n What do you think? Is Battenhall a community or a series of communities?

Martyn to tackle gruelling walk to thank cancer charity for help by Peter McMillan A St Peter’s man living with cancer is preparing to take on one of Britain’s toughest walking challenges. Martyn Wells is in training to tackle the Cape Wrath Trail, which will take him and his team through 240 miles of remote and wild terrain in Scotland. The 50-year-old is taking on the challenge to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support Worcestershire, which has helped him through his illness. He hopes to generate £100,000. He has previously raised £46,000 for the charity by completing the 228-mile Severn Way walk from the river’s source in the Cambrian mountains to Bristol in just 10 days. Father-of-four Mr Wells has Stage IV skin cancer and has been through a series of operations, including the removal of his stomach, during the past two years. He was diagnosed with a melanoma in March, 2017 and it rapidly spread over the rest of his body. “I have always been an outdoor type,” he said, “That’s probably one of the things that led me to have a melanoma in the first place. “As a kid growing up I played high level cricket, rugby and football.” He explained: “My melanoma started on my back, my shoulders. I’m 50 so my generation grew up not knowing what sun cream was.” He added: “We always used to end up with sunburnt shoulders. At least I did because I was a fairhaired kid. “Thankfully, these days we’re a lot more educated.” He summed up the effect of his cancer by saying: “It was just 18 months ago I was a 6ft 4in 19-stone second row. I have lost seven stone.” The Cape Wrath Trail starts in Fort William and continues to the UK’s most north westerly extremity, Cape Wrath.

Mr Wells’s five-man expedition team will need to be completely self sufficient, camping in the wild, trekking through bogs and Scottish Highlands forests and climbing over 40,000 ft of mountains while battling midges and potentially bad weather. His readiness to face the Cape Wrath Trail challenge is all the more remarkable as in February this year he spent 15 nights on

That was followed by 15 nights spent horizontal in bed, on oxygen. A month later he had to learn to walk again due to atrophy of his leg muscles. The Cape Wrath trail will be very different from Mr Wells’s Severn Way challenge last year. “Last year was about doing about 20-odd miles a day. We would stop at a pub – it was very comfortable. “This year there will be 15 kilos on my back, including a tent, and off we go.” He and his team have been preparing for the Scottish expedition by training in the Brecon Beacons and the Black

n NEWS n The Crookbarrow Way Bridge which will span the SLR

Closure of A4440 will allow bridge to be lifted into place The main span of the Crookbarrow Way footbridge is set to be lifted into place during the first weekend of August. The installation will see full closure of the A4440 Southern Link Road (SLR) in both directions of Crookbarrow Way between the Whittington and Norton roundabouts from 7pm on Saturday, August 3 until 7pm on Sunday, August 4. The closure, together with that of the railway line bridge which the footbridge will be placed next to, is for safety reasons during the installation. The new bridge has been visible to motorists using the SLR over recent weeks, on the raised bank alongside the highway. From 7pm on Sunday, July 28 to Saturday, August 10, due to contraflow working on the

eastbound carriageway the westbound carriageway will be closed to facilitate the assembly and disassembly of the crane to lift Crookbarrow Way Footbridge into place. Traffic on the eastbound carriageway will operate under the same arrangement as before the installation of the railway bridge, with two lanes open in a westbound direction (down the hill) and one lane eastbound (up the hill). Some additional single lane closures will be required in both directions throughout the construction period to allow for safe working. Those closures will only be during the day at off-peak times such as between 9.30am and 3.30pm There might be changes to the

above dates if, for example, an operation could not be completed due to high winds. From 7pm on Saturday, August 10 until 7pm on Sunday, August 11 there will be full closure in both directions of Crookbarrow Way to allow for removal of traffic management equipment on the eastbound carriageway and to reopen the westbound carriageway. During the full closures motorists will be diverted via Bath Road and London Road/Whittington Road, with a longer diversion route for high-sided vehicles travelling westbound to avoid the low bridge near New College on Whittington Road. Pedestrians and cyclists will be directed to use Red Hill Lane and London Road/Whittington Road.

More praise for project The extension of Battenhall rail bridge over the Southern Link Road on the edge of St Peter’s has earned another award. The project, delivered by Worcestershire County Council, was highly commended in the Highways Management category at The MJ Local Government Achievement Awards. The council and its partners, SLC Rail and Alun Griffiths Ltd, were praised for “demonstrating an example of innovative engineering which could be transferable to similar situations across the UK” and “demonstrating a ‘can-do’ attitude which delivered the project effectively and efficiently and satisfied the needs and issues of several organisations with the minimum of disruption”. Conservative councillor Ken Pollock, the county council's Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Economy and Infrastructure, said: “This is yet another fantastic and very well deserved achievement for everyone involved in the work on Battenhall Railway Bridge. “I’m thrilled the team have received further recognition for their efforts. “The work on extending the bridge was an extremely important part of our wider project to ensure the A4440 Worcester Southern Link Road is fit for the future by dualling from the M5 to Powick Roundabout.” The bridge spans one of the busiest stretches of road in the county.

Broomhall Way footbridge is given approval

n An artist's impression of how the bridge will look in Power Park

Worcestershire county councillors have given the goahead for the Broomhall Way foot and cycle bridge following concerns over flooding where it would land in Power Park in St Peter’s. Members of the council’s planning and regulatory committee approved the bridge, which will span the A4440 Southern Link Road (SLR) between the Ketch and Norton Roundabouts. Approval had been delayed by county councillors after fears

were raised about flooding issues in Power Park. Conservative Worcestershire county councillor Steve Mackay, who represents St Peter division on the authority, said: “They tell us the experts have looked at the flooding issue in Power Park and as a result of the information they have received from the experts and planners they are going to raise the pedway to make sure any flooding that has happened in the past will be alleviated by the new design.”

Government rules prevent council titles being altered The chairman of St Peter’s Parish Council has had to shelve his plan to make the title of his role gender neutral. Alan Tucker, described as “appalling” legislation that prevented him having his role redefined as “chair” and that of his deputy, John Kemp, as “vicechair” rather than the current chairman and vice-chairman. During the most recent meeting of the parish council Mr Tucker said: “I’m proposing the position of chairman be called chair and the position of vice-chairman as vice-chair.” His motion was seconded by parish councillor Linda Murray. Mr Tucker’s predecessor as chairman, Alan Tidy, objected to the proposal, however, saying his objection had “nothing to do with equality”.

n Alan Tucker One of the reasons for his opposition to the move was “a legal one”, adding: “I believe the title of chairman of the council is set down in the Local Government Act 1972.” He said there was a procedural obstacle to the change, explaining: “The title chairman is in standing orders as is vicechairman”, adding there would have to be a written motion on an order paper to seek the change.

n Alan Tidy Mr Tucker, who said he was trying to bring the parish council “into the 21st century”, said: “I think it’s appalling a 1972 Act is taking precedence.” Although agreeing to withdraw his proposal on the basis of what councillor Tidy had said, he said: “I don’t agree, when we have got businesses round the country and all sorts of other organisations that have dropped chairman.”

Post office set to disappear From Page 1 where it could be set up. A letter to Worcester City Council’s managing director, David Blake, from the Office of the Group Chief Executive of Post Office, in May said: “Regretfully, there are currently no interested parties to take on the service. However, our field team will continue to visit the local area and discuss the opportunity with local retailers.” The letter added: “In the meantime, the field team will look at both short-term and long-term solutions to maintain a post office service before the branch closes.” The post office situation has seen the postmaster resign. Community spirit is alive and well

Battenhall residents celebrated their neighbourliness in what has become an annual event. People in The Hill Avenue enjoyed a street party as the road was closed off for their Great Get Together. The event was inspired by the words of Jo Cox in her maiden speech to the House of Commons before her murder. One of The Hill Avenue event organisers, Hannah Clarke, said: “We’ve done it for three years now.” She explained: “I started it by writing to everyone on our street – 77 houses – back in April, 2017 and we’ve enjoyed it so much we’ve just kept doing it.” She added: “It’s changed our street for the better. People talk to each other and enjoy the sense of community. We’ve enjoyed it a lot. “We have a facebook group where we swap, lend and share.” Each event is also used as an opportunity to raise funds for

The foodbank is always among beneficiaries from fundraisers such as raffles. This year’s get together in The Hill Avenue featured a bake-off competition. Battenhall Green councillor Louis Stephen, who represents the ward on Worcester City Council, was invited to open the event. He said: “The Great Get Together is inspired by Jo Cox, who was

New lights installed to make crossing safer It is hoped pedestrians will be safer using a crossing on St Peter’s Drive as a result of extended lighting being installed there. The lights have been fitted on the crossing beacons where the Norton pedway meets St Peter’s Drive. Conservative councillor Steve Mackay, who represents St Peter’s on Worcestershire county and Worcester city councils, said: “It’s good to finally see the extension lighting fitted to the pedestrian crossing beacons on St Peter's Drive at the Norton Pedway junction.” He said a nearby crossing, near the Farne Avenue junction, had had extra lights on it for a while. St Peter’s parish councillors are to write to the chairman of Tesco expressing their disappointment at the estate’s store pulling out of hosting the parish festival’s barbecue just days before the event. Volunteer staff from the St Peter’s store have traditionally run the festival barbecue and were set to do so again this year before declaring their unavailability five days before the event. Budding young footballers hope to follow in footsteps of Lionesses With England’s women footballers doing the country proud by making the World Cup semi-finals, girls hoping to follow in their bootsteps took part in a tournament especially for them in Battenhall. The Wildwood Drive-based park has been awarded a 2019 Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor to follow the previous year’s achievement. Conservative councillor Lucy Hodgson, Cabinet Member with Responsibility for Communities at Worcestershire County Council, said: “The team at Worcester Woods work incredibly hard to

£25m pledge for hospices is welcomed by city MP Worcester’s MP has welcomed a £25 million funding pledge to support children’s hospices such as Bath Road-based Acorns. The money has been ring fenced by NHS England to support the hospices by 2023/24, increasing annually from this year’s baseline of £12 million. Across England, 40,000 babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions rely on palliative care to enhance their quality of life, manage symptoms and provide their families with help and rest. Worcester’s Conservative MP, Robin Walker, said the cash pledged would relieve pressure on children’s hospices and better enable them to plan and deliver lifeline care and support. The funding will come directly from NHS England and will no longer rely on match funding from clinical commissioning groups (CCGs). Mr Walker had met Acorns Children's Hospice Trust chief executive, Toby Porter, to discuss the need for the funding and relayed

Carnival brings colour to city Almost three times as many people are estimated to have turned out for the Worcester Carnival 2019 parade and its associated events on the racecourse at Pitchcroft compared to the previous year. That was despite overcast skies and showers. One of the organisers, Christine King, described the event as “absolutely fantastic” but called for even more than the 11 floats and walking groups that took part in this year’s parade for 2020. Taiwanese students on cultural visit to college

Students and staff of a Taiwan school visited Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College. The 26-strong party from Kuang Jen Catholic High School were welcomed to the Worcester school by head of foreign languages Claire Parker. The students were visiting as part of a cultural exchange and were partnered with Blessed Edward’s

years seven to 10. Mrs Parker said: “These visits are just so important as life is so different in other counties and this allows students to experience new things and widen their horizons.” Visiting student Aurora Chan ShunYin said everyone had been nice and friendly and she had enjoyed her week. Her favourite part was art.

Outdoor learning earns school a national award Cherry Orchard Primary School has proved it is great outdoors by earning a national accreditation. Its commitment to providing frequent, continuous and progressive learning outside the classroom (LOtC) to all of its pupils has seen it achieve an LOtC (Silver) award. Awarded by the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom the silver mark accredits those schools that have policies and practices in place to ensure that high quality LOtC is available to all pupils across all areas of the curriculum to benefit their learning and personal development. Cherry Orchard Primary School headteacher Mike Painter said: “Being awarded LOtC Mark (Silver) is a real coup for all the staff and governors here as it shows that we are really making strides in providing our pupils with potentially life-changing opportunities. “We're thrilled to get official recognition for our efforts and we look forward to building on this award to continue to improve our LOtC provision.” The LOtC Mark is awarded by CLOtC, the national organisation for learning outside the

classroom. It provides free online information for teachers on how to plan and organise high quality LOtC activities. The LOtC Mark is intended not only to recognise existing exemplary provision but also to assist and support schools in developing their LOtC activities to enable all children to have access to meaningful LOtC experiences. LOtC Mark is the only national accreditation for schools which recognises and supports the development of learning outside the classroom across all subject areas.

Kim Somerville, chief executive of LOtC, said: “Learning outside the classroom provides the most memorable experiences in a child’s school life. “LOtC Mark (Silver) demonstrates that the school is committed to delivering genuinely valuable learning outside the classroom experiences to all of their children and young people, and to continuing to develop that provision. “Learning outside the classroom has many proven educational benefits. “I congratulate Cherry Orchard on being awarded LOtC Mark.”
