his will be the last time I introduce the St Peter’s Hospice newsletter as I have decided to retire and the search for a new CEO has already begun. While I know that changing CEOs can be unsettling I think that after 7 years in the post now is a good time to hand over this fantastic organisation. I believe St Peter’s Hospice is in a strong place, not least thanks to the support of many of you, and following the successful conclusion of the Room to Care project it is now time to take stock, review the Hospice strategy and plan for the years ahead to determine how best it should attend to the needs of our beneficiaries.

It has been a privilege to lead the Hospice and I am proud to be counted amongst the hundreds who have contributed to making it the wonderful charity it is. The Hospice rightly enjoys an excellent reputation and has great support from the people of Bristol and surrounding areas without which we could not achieve what we do. I want to take this last opportunity, therefore, to thank you for the help and support you have given me and St Peter’s and to encourage you to continue to do so!

HRH the Duke of Kent visited the Hospice on 2 April to officially open the new state-of-the-art Inpatient Unit.

Our Chief Executive, Simon Caraffi said: “We were honoured to welcome HRH the Duke of Kent. The Unit is a superb building and a 21st century hospice for Bristol where we can provide a warm, welcoming and calm environment with the highest clinical standards.

“Thank you to everyone who has raised or contributed funds. We are so grateful for the generosity of the individuals, groups and companies who have chosen to support us.”

Introducing Madmess 5K A mess of bubbles, glitter and paint - a fun run for all ages!

Last year 1,200 wonderful Bubble Rushers helped raise £48,000 by taking part in our foamy, family run. You loved the bubbles and the chaos so this year, we’re really ramping it up and inviting you to join us for a day of crazy, family fun!

The 5k course features two bubble stations, pumping out a sea of coloured bubbles and two paint stations, creating rainbow paint clouds and if that’s not messy enough, we’ll make you shimmer and glisten at our glitter station finish line!

Our course is family friendly, so you can run, jog, walk, or even dance through the bubbly, colourful, glittery mess. Our glitter and paint is also bio-degradable and non-toxic.

Don’t worry if you are not a runner, because the course is not timed, so you can enjoy getting messy and having fun - plus everyone gets a medal at the end!

Patient story Our Hospice Neighbours Network scheme is celebrating a fantastic fifth successful year. Hospice Neighbours are specially trained volunteers who visit patients in their own home for social and practical support. Since 2014 we have made more than 5,000 visits and supported around 750 patients and families. We currently have 63 volunteers participating in the scheme supporting 41 patients.

Volunteer Debbie Weston has been visiting James Boston from Stockwood every Wednesday evening for the last three years, supporting with domestic chores around the house. James said "Debbie comes every Wednesday evening to help out in the home. This can be from hoovering to cooking and changing the bed. Her visit makes such a difference to me and helps me manage in my own home. She is nothing short of an angel."

James, a dad of one and former mechanic has been attending our Day Hospice. He was first diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland in 2013. He had surgery and radiotherapy, only for the cancer to return three years later.

James is now on medication to help him with the condition. But the cancer has left him weak and unable to do normal everyday tasks.

Debbie, who works in banking, first started volunteering at the Hospice three years ago, one Sunday a month serving meals and drinks to patients.

When she was given the opportunity to become part of the Hospice Neighbours Network, she grabbed it. She is also now part of our bereavement support team. Debbie says of her visits: "James was the first person I visited and he’s been part of my life for the last three years; I really enjoy volunteering; I get far more out of it than I put in and it’s very rewarding."

Good volunteering is reciprocal and James and Debbie’s experience is a great example of how our volunteers support our patients.

We are currently recruiting for more volunteers to join Hospice Neighbours Network.

House clearance We launched our House Clearance service in 2018 which has directly funded £15,000 towards patient care.

Luisa Partridge, who runs the House Clearance service, is thrilled with its success: “We’ve received such positive feedback from our customers. We owe the success of this to our professional House Clearance Team who complete every job to a very high standard.”

Barry James, from the House Clearance Team recalls some surprising donations: “The service raises funds through the sale of goods donated and the charge for clearance of waste. Every house clearance we attend is different and we really never know what we ‘re going to find, from mid-century furniture, crystal glassware, vintage clothing and even a WW2 flying helmet!”

Bristol Pride We are very excited to announce St Peter’s Hospice is supporting Bristol Pride Festival for the first time this year!

From 1-14 July we will show our support for Bristol’s LGBT+ community and celebrate Bristol Pride in our shops and via social media. On Saturday 13 July we will join the Pride Parade and run a stall at the Pride Festival. We are committed in supporting the whole of the wider Bristol community and value all people. We want everyone to know we are their Hospice.

Chris Benson, Director of Patient Care, and a member of the LGBT community has been appointed as Chair of the Pride working group at the Hospice.

Chris will be working alongside some of our own staff and volunteers to represent the Hospice at this vibrant festival. “The day is a celebration of our community, so should be great fun, a real opportunity to demonstrate we are here to support everyone in our community, and hopefully a chance to engage with future employees and volunteers.”

Patient services Day Services Katie Miller, Day Services Manager, runs our Day Services department with the help of a team of experienced Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Complementary Therapists and a Healthcare Assistant.

Within Day Services we run two groups, Day Hospice Programme, Wellbeing Programme and also a Drop In service.

Our Day Hospice Programme aims to provide a therapeutic environment for anyone with a life-limiting illness, helping them to gain an increased sense of confidence and empowerment to support them in living with an illness on a daily basis. Patients referred will typically attend one day a week for 6/12 weeks; normally arriving for 10am and leaving at 3pm.

‘’Staff are wonderful and understanding, I have learnt a lot and enjoyed making friends. Being able to talk with others who are in a similar situation to me has been really helpful. ‘ Day Hospice patient

The Wellbeing Programme is a new therapeutic 5 week programme for patients and carers. Patients and carers are welcome to attend separately or together. It is a chance to develop self-care techniques, participate in relaxation, group art therapy, exercise, and discussion groups. There is a multidisciplinary approach to the delivery of the sessions. Our aim is to give people more knowledge, in a structured group setting to enable self-management and improve general wellbeing. The sessions run from 10am until 3pm every Wednesday.

The Drop-In service provides an open door to anyone living with a life-limiting illness and carers looking for support, information and guidance or just a cup of tea and a chat. The Drop In runs every Tuesday from 2-4pm in the Day Services department. If you would like to attend then just come in to the main Hospice reception – no pre-booking needed.

Fundraising Be a Hospice Superhero!

Help celebrate ten years of the St Peter’s Hospice Midnight Walk Come and join us on Saturday 13 July as we celebrate ten years of wonder women and fundraising superstars with a special superhero-themed edition of The Midnight Walk!

Over the last decade this sponsored 5 mile or 10 mile walk has been supported by over 10,000 women, raising an incredible £1 million for patient and family care in Bristol and surrounding areas.

The 2019 Midnight Walk was launched in March at the Hospice by Pippa, Trudy, Emma and Barbara, whose husbands were all supported by the Hospice. The women want to highlight how the end-of-life care their husbands received helped them through their darkest hours. Without the Hospice, they say they would never have met and may have struggled to cope.

From dressing up as disco divas to carnival queens, every Midnight Walk has been a night to remember. Hospice Events Fundraiser Hayley Ali said: “The Midnight Walk is one of the highlights of the Bristol events calendar and has enjoyed a fantastic ten years. We are so excited to be celebrating the event’s tenth anniversary with all our Hospice Heroes! Whether you’re joining us for the first time or the tenth, help us make this year’s Midnight Walk the biggest and best ever!” Men are also welcome to take part.

Trudy told us: “The atmosphere on the evening is fantastic and it feels really wonderful to come together with so many other women to support such an amazing cause. It’s good to give something back for all the support they’ve given myself and my family over the last four years.”

Sunday 13 October Join us for our Walk to Remember event, a three mile walk with your family and friends in memory of a loved one.

The walk this year will take place at Ashton Court in October, so you can enjoy the lovely autumn colours.

Our China Challenge Team A group of 21 Hospice supporters will be flying over to China in October to undertake our first overseas challenge and trek the Great Wall.

The group have been busy fundraising to reach their combined target of over £60,000, including fire walks, raffles, cake sales, bucket collections and personal running challenges.

Serena Edwards, a Day Hospice Nurse is taking part in the challenge: “My family were lucky to have St Peter’s involved at the end of Dad’s disease. Dad was a volunteer driver for the Hospice and Mum a shop volunteer, my sister was also a volunteer aromatherapist, so we had always known about the incredible work by the Hospice. Dad was a great traveller, having been in the Merchant Navy, and would be so pleased with my decision to do this in his memory and raise as much needed money as I can.”

Community Can you believe we’re almost half way through the year already?! It’s been a busy and exciting six months for us here in the Community Fundraising Team. As ever, the people of Greater Bristol have blown us away with their generosity, and some fantastic events have taken place. We especially want to thank you all for your continued support following such an exciting year in 2018 building our new Inpatient Unit.

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that got involved with this year’s Ready, Steady, Bake campaign!

We saw all sorts of delicious creations, and together over £8,500 was raised.

Particular thanks go to Great British Bake Off semi-finalist Briony Williams, who kindly gave up her time to help promote the campaign, and even held a cake sale herself!

Back in March, local fundraisers Ron and Sue Heath organised a hugely successful event for the Hospice. Charles Dowding, an expert in No Dig Gardening, gave a talk about his practices and techniques.

Over £1,300 was raised on the night from ticket sales, refreshments and a raffle which included some fantastic prizes such as a tour of HRH Prince Charles’s Highgrove Gardens - thanks so much to Ron, Sue and Charles for all your hard work.

SUMMER PARTY Summer is here! And whilst we can’t always rely on the weather, one thing we can be sure of is the generosity of the people of Bristol. From BBQs and picnics to balls and dinners, whatever type of party you choose this summer, do it to raise vital funds for us, your local Hospice.

This year we are lucky enough to once again be receiving support from Katharine’s Farm in Swinhay. In memory of Katherine Meyer, who passed away in 2012, people are welcome to come and enjoy the garden on 29 and 30 June for £5 per person, under 16s are free. Local business support Bristol law firm raises £80,000 After two years of fundraising, Bristol law firm Womble Bond Dickinson (WBD) has reached its ambition of raising £80,000. The firm’s support started in 2017 in memory of Robert Pope (one of its partners) who passed away in April 2016 and was cared for by the Hospice.

The firm’s fundraising activities included a charity quiz, sporting events, riding at the Tour de Bristol for three consecutive years, an Easter Fayre, payroll giving and more. Staff also volunteered in the Hospice's shops across Bristol. WBD's firm wide charitable trust also made a donation of £10,000 towards the total.

Jonathan Bower, partner and head of Responsible Business in WBD's Bristol office, said: "It takes thousands of pounds a day to run St Peter's Hospice, so the charity can continue to deliver essential care to patients and their families. We are therefore thrilled to have achieved our aspirational target of £80,000 to support the Room to Care Appeal.”

"St Peter's Hospice has a deep personal resonance for our firm as our colleague Robert Pope received care at the Hospice before sadly passing away, it meant a lot to us to do something special in his memory. On 8 April it was the third anniversary of Robert's death, and being able to present St Peter's Hospice with our cheque is our personal thank you for the care Robert and his family received. Reaching our target has only been made possible by the tireless determination and commitment of our

colleagues, clients and friends and so I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported us."

Local business support The Bristol Port Company We wanted to highlight and thank the fundraising efforts of The Bristol Port Company who have been getting up to all sorts in aid of the Hospice. Starting the year with a Weight Loss Challenge where for every 1Ib in weight lost by staff, the Port would donate £2 to St Peter’s Hospice. They aimed to lose a literal tonne of weight, however by the end of the challenge had raised a massive £3,654 (you can do the maths!). The apprentices also got involved by getting busy in our gardens shifting top soil and saving the Hospice approximately £3,000! Other team members have been racking their brains at our Corporate Quiz, and walking a windy 6 miles at our Men’s Walk. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone from Bristol Port for their continued and varied support!

Fundraising group news Severnside Support continues to soar!

Formed in 1985, the Severnside Fundraising Support Group has been raising funds for St Peter’s Hospice across the Thornbury and Almondsbury communities for 35 years. Now led by 25-year supporter, Kath Burgess, the group has raised over £380,000 and continue to be dedicated in their pursuit with a full calendar of events. Last year, they raised an incredible total of £11,000 from popular events such as their Quiz Night, Golf Day and Winter Warmer Lunch.

Volunteering Become a Hospice volunteer Volunteers play a vital role at the Hospice in Brentry, donating 27,000 hours of service per year in a wide variety of roles. There’s something for anyone interested in supporting patients and families, giving something back, or learning new skills. Tracey Butler from Yate, shares her reason for becoming a Hospice volunteer: “My dad, Gordon received help from the Hospice at Home service and as a family member I also benefited from this support. Sadly Dad passed away in 2014 and a few years later in 2016 I made a decision to dedicate some of my time to help give back to the Hospice”.

Tracey, who also works at a financial advisors firm, initially joined St Peter’s Hospice one day per week as a Network Neighbour, providing companionship and support to people living with life-limiting illnesses at home. She’s now a volunteer at our Inpatient Unit in Brentry.

“I like that I can provide a listening ear and a shoulder to lean on to both patients and their families, it means a lot. The Hospice has such a positive atmosphere. To anyone thinking of volunteering, I say ‘go for it’ it’s very rewarding”.

Energetic Balloon Fiesta volunteers needed!

Thursday 8th - Sunday 11th August We particularly need people on Saturday and Sunday from very early morning (5.30am!) through until 10/11pm so there is a time to suit everyone!

You can bring the whole family to help if children are at least 6 years old and even the dog! We need collectors, roaming ‘sellers’ and photo station volunteers. You will be provided with a St Peter’s Hospice T-shirt to wear to ensure a great impact can be made across the site, and a car park pass so you can park close to the Fiesta site.
