Thank you for your interest in our 2018 Summer Program! We are excited about all of the great things we have planned, the classes we have to offer, and the variety of options for everyone. We listened to the suggestions you made and have provided many choices throughout the summer. You can select full days/part days all summer long or just a week or two through the summer! Whatever your interest is, St. Paul’s Summer Camp is the place for you! Summer in the City Day Camp is a lightly structured camp with many exciting activities for all ages. Games, arts, literacy, community service projects, field trips, and lots of outdoor activities are some of the things campers will be engaged in as they create new friendships and memories at St. Paul’s. A few details regarding our summer program:

Summer In The City Traditional Day Camp Camp will be offered from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day with an option to come earlier and stay later at no additional cost. You may also choose to attend the full day or a half day (9 a.m. – 1 p.m. or Noon – 4 p.m.). We have a theme for each week to help you select the most exciting week(s) for your child!

Class Enrollment There is a minimum enrollment for each class. If a class needs to be canceled due to low enrollment, you will be notified two weeks prior to the class start date. If a class is canceled, you may switch to another class or request a full refund.

Refunds There are minimum enrollment numbers for each class that must be met in order to offer a class. Lunch/ Extended Day Lunch is served daily at Noon and is included in your fees. Daily sign up for lunch is required by 10 a.m. to secure a lunch. We will serve a hot lunch one day per week and the remaining four days will be cold lunches. Extended day is also included in your fees. Traditional Camp Schedule

SUMMER IN THE CITY

In addition to Summer classes, we also offer traditional camps all summer. Traditional Camp is offered for incoming Toddlers up to incoming 5th graders! Each week has a theme and the activities planned revolve around the theme. You can select half day or full day for traditional camp. You can also select one to five days per week. Week One: Main Street Detectives Investigate the age old mystery of St. Paul’s during this intriguing camp! Play detective as you go on scavenger hunts, create detective work kits and play mystery games all in the search of St. Paul’s ancient secret. Campers will make a visit to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art for a scavenger hunt.

Week Two: Stop “Bugging” Me! Learning about insects and how they live, work and play is always fun! We will learn how bugs are classified and how they work together with plants and flowers. They might “bug” us but insects are really important to this planet called Earth. “Buggy” snacks will slither their way into camp this week too!

Week Three: Back to the Future Go back in time! What was it like to live on a homestead? How fun was it to dance to the music of Elvis and The Beatles? Come and enjoy a chocolate malt at an old fashioned malt shop. Watch as the first man walks on the moon! Watch TV and talk on the phone like it is the 1960’s! Campers will see how different (and easy!) life is today compared to the past!

Week Four: Celebrate Our Stars & Stripes This week campers will celebrate all things red, white and blue! We will learn about our history, play traditional games and make patriotic crafts to celebrate our country’s birthday and OF COURSE celebrate with some good ol’ fashioned American food!

Week Five: A Galaxy Far, Far Away The final frontier! Be ready to explore the planets, discover constellations and play with aliens. Aliens, Rocket Ships, Solar Systems — anything spacey will do the trick! To infinity and beyond!

Week Six: Talk to the Animals Dr. Dolittle did it and so can you! Campers will learn about animals, their habitats and what they eat. We will make animal art, and play animal games! We will even have some animal visitors during the week!

Week Seven: Abracadabra! Prepare your wands, hats, capes, and broomsticks! This week we will share a little “Hocus Pocus” and inner magic! Whether you are a fan of Harry Potter or Magic School Bus, join us this week for some magical adventures!

Week Eight: Construction Zone Prepare for a week of building! Grab your hard hat and let’s get to work! Campers will build with blocks, Legos and tiles. Campers will also swap their hard hats for aprons to “construct” some fun desserts. Builder or baker, it will promise to be a fun week of camp!

Week Nine: SPEDS County Fair in the City Step right up! Get your tickets! Come one come all to SPEDS County Fair in the City! The week will be full of special activities that will make you feel like you’re at the county fair including carnival games, watermelon eating contest, cupcake walk and Blue Ribbon Contest just to name a few!

Our Summer Classes give our students the chance to truly experience summer. All about exploration and fun, we offer morning and afternoon classes from Toddler – 7th grade.

WEEK ONE

(JUNE 4 — 8) Mini Chefs in the Kitchen

Pokemon Training Camp

It’s an “all hands on deck” cooking class! Practice making treats during this camp with Mrs. Moriarty and Mrs. Leek. We will be prepping, mixing, and eating our yummy creations! Every little chef should know how to cook in the kitchen! You are never too young to learn to cook! New this year— boys AND girls are allowed!! Grade: PreS – PreK Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

Pokemon trainers are called to improve their skill as Pokemon masters! Attendees will work on art projects, Pokebelt, and Pokeballs. You will go adventuring each day to catch a wild Pokemon, test your might in the Pokemon stadium, trade Pokemon with friends, and complete challenges to earn rare Pokemon items! You won’t want to miss this exciting new class! Grade: PreK – 3rd Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

Galaxy Girls Children are born scientists — they test, build, smash, squish, poke, and question everything in sight. Giving them hands-on experiences is a great way to let them find out more about their world and foster their love of discovery! In this camp, we will get our hands dirty and learn all about science through experiments and cooking! Grade: PreS – 1st Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

Cars! Cars! Cars! If you like cars, from Lightning to Mater to Jackson Storm to Hot Wheels and Matchbox, this class is for you! Come enjoy a week of cars, cars, and more cars. You will get to build your own car and even bake, decorate and EAT a car! Top off the week with bringing in your favorite car from home to share with the class. American Girl Camp

For a fun filled week of games, crafts, cooking, and adventures, grab your American Girl, Magic Attic, or other 18-inch doll and bring her to camp! We will read about some of our favorite girls; Kirsten, Julie, Kit, Kaya, Samantha, Addy, and more! With our dolls we discover fun while sharing history and activities. Get ready for a week of American Girls! Grade: K – 4th Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

Urban Chefs! Join this class as we travel around Kansas City to various restaurants, meet the chefs, get cooking tips, and taste their popular food. Whether you are a novice or expert, we can all learn a new cooking technique or two! Why not learn from the best?! On Friday, students will share what they learned in a cooking show at SPEDS! Grade: 1st – 5th Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

Safe Sitters Babysitting Class Babysitting is a very responsible yet fun way to spend your summer! But are you prepared? Learn how to handle emergencies when caring for young children as well as how to engage in activities while babysitting. We will discuss behavioral issues, how to promote your business, and what you should expect. You will also get to spend some hands on time with young children to personally experience the responsibility of interacting with youth (with adult supervision). You will complete the week with a card of completion (that will comfort the parents!) and a manual. This class will be led by Mrs. Kuhls. Grade: 6th – 8th Time: 1– 4 p.m. Price: $182

Li’l Squirts This is the class you have been waiting for! Come enjoy some never-ending, super refreshing fun in the sun!

Splash around in a pool, squirt your friends, see how low you can go in water limbo; we have it all! We will even take a trip to a splash park! Come be a li’l squirt; don’t forget your swimsuit and towel! Grade: PreK – 2nd Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

Community Connection Mission and Service is a class that continues the work of the sacrificial heart of the St. Paul’s school year into the summer with the guidance of Mrs. Nash. Campers will operate week-long community service projects including volunteering in a local food pantry, cleaning grounds at a local park, and walking/caring for pets in an animal shelter just to name a few. Be sure to participate in this leadership opportunity that is a positive reflection of St. Paul’s community! You will be able to apply your earned service hours to the SPEDS required hours! Grade: 3rd – 6th Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

(JUNE 11 — 15) City Market Chefs! On Monday, Mr. Ronan and the group will take a trip to the city market and pick up various fresh fruits and veggies. Throughout the week, you will sample a new recipe and prepare something yummy from the city market “produce”. We will explore new foods as well as savor old favorites. Lego Racers

Do you like to use tools? Do you like to see how things work on the inside? Let’s deconstruct old appliances and then create new sculptures! Students will use

Super Heroes Calling all super heroes! A super villain of the very worst kind has invaded SPEDS! Mrs. Lawrence needs a trusted team of super heroes to help defeat the bad guy and save the school! Spanish Immersion with Senorita Aycart This is a great opportunity for children to immerse themselves in Spanish while having all the fun of a summer camp. Musical Passport

Lego Robotics Race Cars, Monster Trucks, Ball Shooters and many more exciting builds are all part of this exciting class. Students will learn to build and program a variety of vehicles, devices, and robots utilizing the Lego Mind Storm products. Grade: 4th – 6th Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

Secret Agents Grab your magnifying glass and be prepared to go on a mission to solve a mystery each day! Garage Rock Band Rock Band is for kids ready to rock! This class will introduce you to the basics of making your own music. Cooking It Up a Notch! Welcome to the world of cooking! In this fun and delicious week, students will learn the basics of cooking great tasting food. Step Into Our Fairy Garden If you like princesses and fairies, this class is for you! Join your friends and learn the magical art of being a true fairy princess. 2D Contempory Art: Multi Media! Love to draw? Join Mrs. Lynn and try drawing, painting, pastels, pen and ink, just to name a few! Come enjoy learning about many different drawing media. We will take inspiration from walks to the Kemper Museum and create our own contemporary works! Some days we will work “en plein air” or outside if weather permits! Doll Making In this class we will learn basic hand-sewing stitches and embroidery stitches to make our own cloth dolls and doll clothes. This is a great chance to learn how to sew and make a special doll that you can be proud of! Grade: 1st – 6th Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

Pop Into Preschool Don’t miss out on a fun, safe, and engaging environment for children entering preschool next fall! This is a great way for incoming preschoolers to get acclimated to their new room and routines for the upcoming school year. The morning will burst with lots of activities inside and out! Shattering News! It’s All About Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Rocks & Minerals Students will learn how geologists identify minerals and rocks. They will study and identify samples, explore the three main types of rocks, understand how Earth’s crust is made of tectonic plates, and other unique features of Earth. At the end of the week students will create a model volcano to take home! Grade: 4th – 5th Time: 9 a.m.. – Noon Price: $182

City Travelers Buckle up! This camp will be taking field trips around the city all week. We will visit various city attractions each day, including some hidden KC treasures! French Theater From Moliere to the Comedie Francaise, theater is important in the French culture and is a great way to learn a language. Parts will be assigned depending on the level of French and the children themselves. A performance will take place at the end of the week. Grade: 2nd – 6th Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

Train Your Brain This class will focus on the intriguing ways the brain works and how you can master your mind. It focuses on what causes our behaviors and ways to recover when we “flip our lids”. We will create SMART goals to “train your brain” to keep track of the demands of school, sports, and home. This dives deep into the neuroscience behind habits, self-talk, meditation, optimism, championing ourselves and others. Everyone will come away with a toolbox of ways to master their minds.  Grade: 1st – 6th Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

An adventure designed to take the world of Minecraft from the screen to the classroom and beyond. Grade: PreK – 2nd Time: 9 a.m. – Noon. Price: $182

Llama, Llama Drama What child doesn’t love Llama Llama books?! This week we will read various books about Llama, his mama, and all of their friends. Each day will involve a book, art project, game and a special activity based around the theme of the book that day! Grade: PreS – K Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

Chess The Kansas City Chess Club Camp is designed to challenge players with new material while reinforcing a solid chess foundation and encouraging the growth of positive life skills in every individual. Bastille Day Celebrations

Stomp Camp Inspired by the Broadway show, Stomp, we will make music and create movement using everyday items from around our school. This high energy week culminates with a performance created by the students. Warning: we sometimes make big noises and big messes! Join Mr. Ronan and your friends for a week of Stomp, St. Paul’s style. Grade: K– 5th Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

France’s Independence Day is called Bastille Day. It is celebrated on July 14th and we will celebrate all week long! We will learn about the Independence Day of France, learn French songs, eat traditional French food, and participate in outdoor French games. We will get a small taste of geography and learn directions as we learn about the monuments of Paris. All French levels welcome. Grade: 2nd – 6th Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

Yoga Camp

Splish Splash It’s a wet and wild week as we work with water to create art forms, art projects, and bubble wands! There is no better way to beat the heat than to play in the water for the morning with your friends! Hurry and sign up: this class always fills up quickly! Minecraft Mania Minecraft Mania is a class all things Minecraft! The popular video game translates very well into real world crafting, building and exploration! A great week full of Minecraft themed projects, crafts and activities.

Beginning Sewing on a Machine

Fork, Knife, and Spoon If cooking and dining are your sport, this class is just for you! We will spend the day cooking and learning about favorite restaurants in the Kansas City area. We will visit three popular restaurants, meet their chef, and learn some “cooking tips” from the best in the field! This class has limited space so don’t hesitate to register soon! Grade: 1st – 5th Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

Beginning Machine Sewing Students will learn about fabric, sewing tools, and use of a sewing machine including threading, winding bobbins, selecting stitches, tension, etc. They will also learn to lay out and cut fabric, practice stitching, measuring and hemming. Class will involve the use of scissors and irons as well as sewing machines so safety will be emphasized. Each student will complete at least one simple sewing project such as a pillow or tote bag. Grade: 3rd – 8th Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

WEEK SIX

(JULY 16 — 20) Kindergarten Readiness Come and see what Kindergarten is all about! Join Ms. Stephenson and have fun making crafts, cooking, playing in centers, and playing games before your kindergarten year! You will get a real feel for the Kindergarten routine during this camp while also making new friends! Grade: K Time: 9 a.m. – Noon Price: $182

Tiptoe into Toddlers Join Miss Mac for a sneak peek of the Toddler life at St. Paul’s. This week will give you a chance to experience some of the typical school routines. (Completion of Learning to Sew class or sewing experience is required in order to attend this class). Students will learn more in-depth machine sewing in this class. They will learn how to lay and cut out a pattern. They will learn to make pattern alterations, hemming skills, seam finishes, and become more familiar with the sewing machine. Embroidery - The Decorative Art of Hand Sewing This class will focus on learning how to make decorative stitches with embroidery thread. Let’s Make a Movie In this course, the students will work together to make a short movie. The theme for our movie will be Superheroes!  We’ll go through all the steps in the process — coming up with our story ideas, putting together a script, making costumes and props, rehearsing, and shooting the scenes. By the end of the week, we’ll have a rough cut of our movie to watch together. We’ll enter the movie in the next Kansas City children’s film festival, and if it is picked for an award, you’ll get the chance to go see it play on the big screen at a real movie theater next spring.  Grade: 2nd – 6th Time: 1 – 4 p.m. Price: $182

(JULY 30 — AUG 3) Mini Dance/Cheer Class We’ve got spirit, yes we do! How about you? This class, taught by Ms. Chelsie, will introduce “cheerleading” techniques to the young at heart! Early Room and Late Room are always available for no additional fee! We open at 7:15 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Field trips are included in summer camp! All field trip admission fees, transportation fees, supplies, and costs for special events are included in your base fee. Field trips are scheduled for children entering PreK and above.

Camp is offered every week June 4 through August 10. We will be CLOSED the week of July 2 – 6 for the Independence Day Holiday. We will offer Extended Day care the week of May 29 – June 1. Flexible schedule – you may sign up for full time or part time each week, depending on your needs.

Parents are always welcome to visit our camps at any time! Feel free to join us for lunch.

Campers in the traditional camp are divided into two age groups so we can offer developmentally appropriate, fun activities for all ages!

Each child must bring a labeled water bottle every day to camp.

If you have a last minute child care need, we accept drop ins! Just contact Karen McDonald at kmcdonald@speds. org or 816.268.6536 if a need arises and we will take care of you! (Drop in care is available in traditional camp only). Our staff are CPR/First Aid trained. They also attend summer camp training to provide a quality camp experience for everyone.

A security guard will be on duty full time throughout the summer. They will be on campus from 7:15 a.m. – 6 p.m. Additionally, all external doors as well as the north wing entrance, will be kept locked at all times. If we are walking to a field trip location, security will accompany the group.

CANCELLATION POLICY

NONPAYMENT POLICY

A written request is required two weeks prior to the start of the class in order to receive a 75% refund. Full refunds are given when there are at least three weeks written notice provided. The school will make the decision to cancel class/camp due to low enrollment two weeks before the start date. Should this occur, you will be notified via email and receive a full refund of fees paid.

We encourage you to pre-register your child(ren) for the class/camp they are interesteded in – this helps us plan staffing and supplies. But we understand that sometimes situations change at the last minute and we always accommodate drop ins. Should your child(ren) drop in for camp, we will charge the credit card on file in your CampBrain account without notifying you. You will be contacted via email if you do not have a card on file or it is denied. Payments are not made through student billing for summer camp.
