Irish and the FA Cup A View from Afar Watch Saints Rising - Going to print Welcome to Richmond Park as we seek to continue our impressive rebound from European disappointment by recording our fourth consecutive league win. The team is in a good place right now, very evident in last Monday's solid win against a Bohs team that has regressed alarmingly in the past year. There is a solid shape to our play and we have a physicality now that adds greatly to our ability to see out difficult games. There have been question marks during the year about the squad's direction, but I think we can almost all agree that the team is in a good place. It's a very good squad, and the focus needs to be on stability for the remainder of this season and into next year. Well done to Tim AlthoughClancy. it's a good few weeks ago now, this is my first editor's notes since the disappointment of our European exit. Although the reaction of some fans cannot be explained or condoned, and we have been heavily fined as a result, the immediate aftermath was extremely raw for everyone. As someone who spends a lot of time in Bulgaria, the antics of CSKA were hard to stomach, and there's not one Bulgarian I know that didn't want us to beat them that night. They're a polarising force in Bulgaria, and it's easy to see why. Anyway, as the circles of European football continue to tighten, it's a fair possibility that we will see CSKA Sofia again some day. It was evident in their attitude in Sofia that they had never heard of St Patrick's Athletic when our name was drawn against them. They definitely know who we are now. Enjoy the game, Ruairi Kavanagh

You're very welcome to Richmond Park for tonight's game and in particular we extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Finn Harps. The points on offer are of vital importance to both teams, albeit for different reasons, so we can expect a very competitive game. My last programme notes had to be written before the second leg of our Conference League tie with CSKA Sofia so this is a good time for a brief reflection on our 2022 European campaign. The highlights are obvious - a thrilling penalty shoot-out to win the tie in Slovenia and an against-all-odds win in Sofia. The lowlight, of course, is the closing minutes of our second leg decider in Tallaght and its aftermath. The clear consensus among pundits and neutral observers, having studied the video evidence, was that the penalty which took Sofia through at our expense was awarded in error, and should in fact have been a free out for a clear handball by the CSKA player. However, when VAR is not available, officiating mistakes are part and parcel of the game and simply have to be accepted. The behaviour of certain CSKA players, a section of their supporters and behaviour of a Bulgarian journalist was, however, completely unacceptable and left a very sour taste. It also resulted in a reaction from some of our supporters which can't be condoned and has cost the club very dearly in terms of a huge fine from UEFA. This is particularly disappointing as our supporters have worked so well with the club to avoid the possibility of large fines due to the use of flares. I can only ask that, for future games, whatever the competition, all supporters remember that, no matter what the provocation may be, if you break any rules you are only hurting your own club. That unfortunate occurrence should not take away from the magnificent backing which our fans gave the team throughout this year's European adventure. Their skills as travel agents have been tested over the years but never more so than in 2022 with the particular challenges presented by the draw and the well documented turmoil in the aviation business. The large and vocal support in both Murska Sobota and Sofia made a real difference to the outcome of those games. The home games were superb events, and I felt very proud of our club and our supporters in turning Tallaght red for the CSKA game. I also felt that in all four games we more than matched our opponents and undoubtedly part of the frustration in the aftermath of the Tallaght result is the knowledge that further progress was very much in our hands but sadly we didn't take the chances when they presented Thethemselves.2022campaign has certainly whetted our appetite for next year, so the objective for the rest of the season is to make sure we qualify again. That may require us to catch one of the teams currently above us, and will certainly require us to stay ahead of all of those currently below us. The response to our exit was to take maximum points from the next three games and that's a sign of resilience that will stand to us in the fixtures to come. We may be out of the FAI Cup, but effectively we have 9 cup finals starting from tonight. Let's hope for a good game and, most importantly, a good result.

Despite bowing out – and it was very hard to accept – the players could hold their heads high after delivering such a huge effort in both rounds against Mura and CSKA. Negotiating a round against Mura was a great moment for the club. The 1-0 victory in Sofia was also an occasion to cherish. Over the four games, our players competed very well and did Irish football proud. After getting a taste for European football, we are desperate to play on that stage again next season. By winning our last three league games, we have done our ambitions a power of good. The victory over Sligo was particularly pleasing as it came just a couple of days after the disappointment of going out of the Europa Conference League. We followed that up with a solid 2-1 victory against a highly motivated UCD team. Monday's victory against Bohemians was important for various reasons, not least because it was a Dublin derby and we all want to come out on top in a derby. There was plenty to enthuse over in the performance at Dalymount Park, not least our energy levels, willingness to stick to the game plan and desire to get there first in 50-50 situations. We were good value for the win. We have nine games remaining, including tonight, and the target is to collect as many points as possible and hope that it secures a place in Europe. Just four points separate Derry City in second and ourselves in fourth. There is a lot to play for and a positive result tonight will keep us right on track. Enjoy the match, Tim Clancy

I would like to welcome Ollie Horgan, his players and everyone connected with Finn Harps to Richmond Park for this evening's Premier Division match.

The main reason for our disappointment was that you, the fans, did not get the result your outstanding support deserved. The image of nearly 7,000 St Pat's fans at Tallaght Stadium, all in great voice, is a very special memory that will stay with me for a long time.

This will be our fourth and final meeting with Harps this season and it's one we are really looking forward to. Finn Harps are a very good side. They consistently punch above their weight and Ollie has a special ability to pull out results in the closing round of games each season. Both teams need the points for different reasons tonight and we expect a battle. It feels like longer than three weeks since we bowed out of European competition against CSKA Sofia at Tallaght Stadium. On the night, we were unlucky. Some very important decisions didn't go our way and that had a major bearing on the result.

Stickers, placed at a couple of locations in Dublin on the day of the game, portrayed Bulgaria's most successful club in a dim light.

One man who probably wouldn't have been surprised by the imagery on those stickers is Alan Pardew. Better known for his tenures in charge of West Ham, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, Pardew had a brief spell as manager of CSKA Sofia earlier this year. If you blinked, you probably missed it. He took the reins in April, but vile scenes at a home game on May 19 prompted him to walk away. "The events before and after the match against Botev Plovdiv were unacceptable, not only for me but also for my assistant Alex Dyer and for my players,” Pardew said in his resignation statement. “This small group of organised racist fans, who tried to sabotage the game, are not the fans I want to coach the team in front of. Unfortunately, my time here has come to an end.”

CSKA jerseys were in short supply.

Ivan Turitsov scored the penalty and CSKA Sofia were on their way to the playoff round of the Europa Conference League. Over two legs, they were no better than St Patrick’s, even though their stature and playing budget suggested they should have been operating on a different plane.

The "events" he was referring to involved a section of CSKA supporters targeting black players from their own team with racial slurs. Just in case these jibes were somehow misunderstood or went unheard, they also threw bananas at the players.

The ball strikes the right arm of Mauricio Garcez before rebounding against Harry Brockbank's right hand. The first infringement is the one that matters, so it's a free out. To the horror of the majority at Tallaght Stadium, Romanian referee Horatiu Fesnic pointed to the spot.

Supporters didn't just file out of the stadium; they hotfooted it. Present company included. Close to Tallaght Village, one man I know caught my eye. "Not nice people," he said, as his wife nodded in agreement while keeping up with his brisk pace. The official attendance was 6,760, most of whom were cheering for St Patrick's. Led by the singing section in the East Stand with their vibrant colour, volume and tireless enthusiasm, the atmosphere felt raucous for the most part. The sartorial choices on display in the away section made little sense. Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Portugal were all represented. Most wore non-descript t-shirts.

A sense of menace filled the Tallaght air in the immediate aftermath. CSKA players' celebrations, led by Bradley de Nooijer’s gesture to the St Patrick’s fans, was antagonistic. Briefly, on-pitch order was lost. Red cards for De Nooijer and Adam O’Reilly followed.

Less than 24 hours after the defeat to CSKA, St Patrick’s Athletic released a statement. The television footage does not lie.

"Following last night's European match against CSKA Sofia, St Patrick's Athletic have today been made aware that two of our players have been subject to racial abuse," the statement said. "One of our players was sent racist messages on his personal social media account, while another was racially abused during last night's game. The abuse came from the away section at Tallaght Stadium. We have reported these matters to UEFA, the FAI and SARI." Club chairman Garrett Kelleher said: "We are appalled and disgusted by the vile racist messages and language that has been directed at our players. St Patrick's Athletic is a multicultural, inclusive and welcoming club to all individuals, with a zero-tolerance policy to racism and abuse of any kind.

"The club has offered its full support to both players, and we look forward to seeing them back on the pitch at Richmond Park."

With a bit of luck, the team will be back in European competition next season. However, there's no getting away from it: the unpleas antness took a toll. Patrick’s Athletic v FINN HARPS

The European adventure was exciting and, to a point, fun. Eliminating Mura less than a year after they defeated Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League provided plenty of nourishment to dine out on. The 1-0 victory over CSKA at the Vasil Levski Stadium was historic.

A RESHAPED and younger St. Pats outfit virtually assured themselves of a place in the League Cup quarter-finals as a result of this victory over Bray at the Carlisle grounds last night. In order to displace St. Pats at the top of Group Five, part-timers Bluebell United must beat UCD by four goals at Belfield this St.evening.Pats, currently in the throws of knitting together as a unit after a protracted exodus of personnel to Athlone and former boss Jimmy Jackson, were sound in defence and occasionally inventive up front. The home side's James Hancock, who has returned after a week's trial at Luton, worked hard on the right wing, but achieved little. Pats took the lead on the half hour when Mark Ennis headed smartly to goal. The tide was now running well in favour of the visitors and they went further ahead in the 59th minute, when John McDonnell headed a fine goal following a corner taken by Paul Masterson. After this, there was never any doubt as to which side would win.

Opp Watch - Finn Harps

Harps come into tonight's game second from bottom in the league table but on the back of a stirring victory over Sligo Rovers. Some would look at the table and presume that St Pats should have an easy task ahead of them to claim a muchneeded win but a team managed by Ollie Horgan should never be taken lightly. One of the league's great survivors Horgan has worked the proverbial miracle keeping Finn Harps in the premier division since 2019 and their presence, along with as many regional clubs as possible, is not only most welcome but also vital for the progression of the league and I know I’m not alone in wanting them to stay up again this season for many reasons but primarily as it’s one of the most enjoyable away trips in the Olliecountry.Horgan and Ryan Connolly both saw red as Finn Harps came through a dramatic north-west derby against Sligo Rovers. Despite losing manager Horgan to a 12th-minute red card, the home side went in at the break two goals to the good, with Barry McNamee and Ryan Rainey the scorers. Midfielder Connolly made it 31 from a penalty before getting sent off, and then Aidan Keena’s second goal of the night – also from the spot –made for a tense finish. Horgan was sent off for picking up two successive yellows – firstly for being too vociferous in his appeals against a Ryan Connolly booking – and then for giving referee Rob Hennessy a clap for flashing the first yellow. Although it was far from oneway traffic, McNamee’s blistering opener was only going one place from the moment it left his left-foot on 17 minutes. The former Derry City captain’s shot flew past Luke McNicholas in the Sligo goal like an arrow. It was all Sligo late on, with McKeown saving from substitute Kailin Barlow and substitute David Cawley while Blaney’s 95th-minute header at the Town End went over the Harps crossbar. With UCD losing out to St Patrick’s Athletic, it means the Ballybofey side came off the bottom of the table So, looking at tonight's match, whatever happens Pats will have to play for the full 90+ minutes because as we have seen above, Harps will create late chances in tight games.

Good Evening

Welcome to Ollie Horgan and all those connected with Finn Harps. Our last home game was a couple of weeks back when we beat Sligo Rovers 1-0, the goal coming from Serge Atakayi after a brilliant through ball from Eoin Doyle put Serge one on one with the keeper and Serge’s pace took him past the keeper to slot into an empty net. It was a hard fought victory with Pat’s having to play with 10 men for 30 mins after Mark Doyle was sent off for what the referee adjudged to be a high boot. Danny Rogers made an assured debut in goal making a couple of good saves. Danny came in for the departing Joseph Anang who has decided to continue his development at Derby County in league one in England. It’s a shame the supporters didn’t get a chance to give Joseph a send off his short spell here deserved, best of luck OurJoe! next game was away to UCD in the Belfield bowl. We went in only 1-0 up at the break after a dominant display in which Brockbank hit the crossbar and Forrester and Coughlan went close with chances. The goal came from Timmermans when he nodded home from 2 yards out after Joe Redmond's towering back post header came back off the post from a corner. UCD had a few long range chances through ex Saint Tommy Lonergan. Danny Rogers also made a fantastic save from a deflection to stop UCD equalising. We went 2-0 up early in the second half when Serge Atakayi scored from a mix up in the UCD defence ,scoring for the third game in a row. UCD grabbed a goal back in the 60th min from a free through Duffy that went through a crowded box giving Rogers no chance. The remaining half hour saw both teams have some half chance's but Pats went closest through a Redmond header that came off the inside of the foot of the post. It ended full time 2-1 to the Saints. We then played Boh's away last Monday night and put in a very dominant performance that saw us go in 2-0 up at the break after the very impressive Barry Cotter put us 1 up after nine minutes when he cut in from the right and slalomed past about 5 Boh's players to slot the ball home to the delight of the 800 Pat's fans behind the goal. Chris Forrester scored a lovely second goal on 45 mins when he slotted the ball across the keeper into the far corner after a great pass from Serge to put us 2-0 up at the break. Boh's came out with a bit of fire in their belly and put us under pressure with a bombardment of long balls towards our defence and they were quicker to every second ball at times and they grabbed a goal back in the 62nd minute through a powerful Rory Feely header from a corner. Boh's continued throw everything at us in the search off an equaliser and had a couple bouncing ball goal mouth chances and shots from outside the box but Breslin, Brockbank, Curtis, Redmond and Cotter all defended brilliantly, getting vital blocks in. Jamie Lennon and Adam O'Reilly put a right shift in midfield and were fantastic in winning tackles. We put the game to bed when Adam O'Reilly broke clear of the Boh's defence in the 89th minute to blast past the keeper and send the Pat's fans at the opposite end delirious. We will need to be at our best tonight if we are to keep this run going because Ollie always has his teams well drilled and hard to beat and has a number of quality players that can do damage if they get a chance. Enjoy the Game, Up the Saints, Jimmy Any views expressed in this article are the contributor's own.

1994 Roy Keane, who was on the losing Notts Forest team in 1991, was a winner here along with Irwin as United beat Chelsea 4-0. Cascarino was a late sub for the Pensioners.

1992 Sunderland’s Irish international John Byrne had scored in every round, but couldn’t do so against Liverpool who won 2-0. With Whelan injured, Houghton was the only Irishman in red.

1996 Dermot Gallagher made history when he became the first Irishman to referee an FA Cup final as Man Utd beat Liverpool 1-0. Keane was named Man of the Match and the winner came from United captain Cantona. Irwin also in the United team, while McAteer and Babb were in the ‘Pool team. 2022 Season • Vol. 34 • No.16 • St Patrick’s Athletic v Finn Harps 19

Dermot Gallagher, first Irishman to refereee an FA Cup Final.

1993 A fitting end to David O’Leary’s career at Arsenal as, 14 years after his first Cup Final win, he added another winners’ medal to his collection by appearing as a substitute in the Gunners’ 2-0 replay win over Sheffield Wed.

1985 Man United’s Kevin Moran wrote himself into the record books for all the wrong reasons, becoming the first player to get sent off in the final. Moran and McGrath ended up with winners’ medals thanks to extra-time goal from Whiteside, to beat an Everton side that included Sheedy.

1988 A bad day for Aldridge with Wimbledon ‘keeper Beasant making the first-ever FA Cup final penalty save to deny him. After taking an early lead through Sanchez the ‘Crazy Gang’ with Phelan in their ranks, held on to win 1-0.

CS: It’s usually through agents, although opposition managers have also at times remembered me. More moves open more doors, especially when people see you’re willing to travel.

SB: You spent two years in Poland, including a most prolific season with Jagiellonia Białystok. What did you enjoy most about there?

SB: How well do you speak the different languages you’ve encountered? Any strategies for learning?

How do so many geographically diverse moves come about?

CS: Let’s see... Bulgarian – none. I was ignorant and went about it totally the wrong way. From Cyprus, I can speak a bit of Greek, but can understand much better. Polish –incredibly hard. They sent non Polish speakers to language lessons, their attitude was more “Why don’t you speak Polish if you live in Poland.” I picked a decent bit up in the dressing room, and from using phrases which up with Cillian after his departure from Cyprus.

CS: Hard to say. Culturally it was the most ‘normal’ place I had been, in that it was English speaking and all. It’s a beautiful country, but the football didn’t go to plan. Their two strikers just wouldn’t stop scoring, so I couldn’t break into the team. I was hoping to use that as a springboard into Asia.

CS: Well, I’m a vegan, so that narrows it down somewhat. You would’ve thought Israel, but where I was staying was in the middle of nowhere and I didn’t get out much. I’d have to say the Mediterranean cuisine in Cyprus was brilliant.

SB: A short stint in Israel followed, a return to Poland, before coming back to Scotland.

CS: Again, that was a time I was playing some of my best football, scoring plenty. I think I carried on my good form from Omonia. I joined in February, and we fell just short of the league title, Legia pipped us in the end. Got to play in Europe as well, I scored as we knocked out Rio Ave.

SB: You left Europe after that, heading to New Zealand. Did you feel the distance from home there?

SB: What’s the best food destination you’ve been to?

CS: Nah, to be honest 9/10 times the money on offer is better than what they would get in the UK.

SB: Do you consider yourself a pioneer for other Irish players moving beyond the UK?

SB: Which country would you have liked to have played in?

CS: Well, right now I’m focusing on my fitness and getting back into the team at Dundee FC. To be honest, I’ve no idea. I never thought I’d be in Bulgaria or Cyprus, that was never planned. Football, and life for that matter, can all change in the space of a few weeks.

I heard repeatedly. It probably helped that English was not common, compared to Cyprus. Israeli – I didn’t even try it. When I was in Cyprus I was studying Mandarin too, just for something different to do. I guess I backed the wrong global power.

CS: One of the big leagues like France, Spain or Italy. Beyond that, probably Japan. I’ve heard so much about the country, non football related, and it’s all been positive.

SB: Any further moves planned?

There’s little doubt that for this season at least, the introduction of the Europa Conference League has been a real benefit to clubs in this league, who would very likely have been facing a tougher assignment in the Europa League under the previous set up, or in Shamrock Rovers case, having a European campaign ended without the safety net of six games in the Conference League group stages. I know I could be jumping the gun here and being over-optimistic after one good year, but I can’t see any reason why this progress made this season by Shamrock Rovers, Sligo and ourselves can’t be repeated in seasons to come, and if that happens to be in the Europa Conference League then so be it.

A European campaign, with the opportunity to gain new experiences, some good results and some decent prize money is not to be sniffed at. But on the back of the success in the past few weeks, I believe it is now time to be thinking about planning next year’s league fixture list around the increasing possibility that LOI clubs will be making decent progress in Europe. Let’s also remember Shamrock Rovers have been handed a testing but not daunting draw in the group stages so they might even progress into the knock out stages, which would impact on the early part of next year’s league campaign. Rovers weren’t even the bottom seeds in the draw for the Conference League groups, they were in pot 3 based on the UEFA coefficients, and they aren’t the highest ranked LOI club in the rankings either –Dundalk are 40 odd places above them, and while the Lilywhites didn’t qualify for Europe this time around, they are looking a good bet for a European place next Lookingyear. at the revised Shamrock Rovers fixture list, there are now plenty of Sunday games coming

As the dust settles on the memories of a notable two rounds of Europa Conference League ties for the club, I guess everyone with an affinity to the Saints will have mixed emotions when looking back at how events panned out. Great moments were mixed in with disappointing ones for sure, but I think it’s fair to say that we will all remember the events of the past few weeks for some time to come. For those who travelled out to Slovenia and Bulgaria for the away games in particular, they will no doubt rank high in the list of memorable away days. But the home legs of both games had their moments too, and the pictures of Tallaght Stadium packed full of supporters decked in red and white were a joy to behold. I have to admit that I did envy everyone who was able to attend any of the games, home or away, and be able to experience first hand some of the biggest games in the club’s history. But even from a distance, I can still share in the memorable moments, and I will long remember watching the second leg against Mura online while being on holiday in Copenhagen, and the feeling of elation when the unfortunate Tio Cipot was the man who handed us victory when he blasted his spot over the bar. Of course, it’s not just ourselves who have had some exciting and positive European experiences in the past few weeks. Sligo Rovers certainly made those who follow Scottish football sit up and take notice with a two legged win over Motherwell, although they admittedly made heavy weather of seeing off Bala Town in the previous round. And putting aside the 5-1 defeat in the first leg of their third round match against Viking FK of Norway, the return leg at The Showgrounds in front of another big crowd were able to enjoy a 1-0 victory in the second leg. The results that both Sligo Rovers and ourselves picked up will have helped the league’s UEFA coefficient even before you look at how Shamrock Rovers have performed in Europe this season. Even if the overall aggregate result is a defeat, victories such as those the Rovers recorded at home to Ludogorets and Ferencvaros in the Champions League and Europa League before exiting those competitions, all count towards a boost in the coefficients. More importantly, it sends out the message that clubs in this league can take on opponents with European competition pedigrees and pick up good results against them in one off games.

up for them, fitted in around the Thursday night European games and pretty much two games a week for them from now until the end of the domestic season. And that’s before you factor in any involvement they might have in the FAI Cup, which will be another one game at least following their win at Drogheda last Sunday. Now, it’s a common problem at every level of football, that a fixture pile up can arise if a club is successful in cup competitions, and during my time in non-league football over here in England, I have been involved in many a debate around the pressure of squeezing fixtures in before the designated end of a season in these sorts of instances. And in this league, Dundalk have faced the problem in recent years when fitting their Europa League campaigns in alongside domestic Butsuccess.Ithink we are at the stage now where this now needs to be seriously addressed. Let’s start thinking positively and start believing that European success could become more frequent, and set the stall for the league fixtures accordingly. Rather than cramming more games in as the weather gets cooler and the nights get darker, like Shamrock Rovers are having to do now, surely it’s worth considering another midweek round of fixtures earlier in the season, especially in May or early June before the European games start. And is it time to look at the midseason break too – do we really need that anymore? Would there be any complaints from players, managers and supporters if it was binned? I don’t know all the answers, but I do think it’s now time to start asking the questions and get all the involved parties round the table. Staying with the Europa Conference League, you would have to have a heart of stone not to feel sympathy for Linfield following their dramatic exit from the competition at the hands of Latvian side RGS Riga.

The second leg of the tie was live on the BBC website, and I started watching at the start of extra time, and although I have no affinity to Linfield I was more than happy to cheer them on and see if they could become the first Northern Irish side to reach the group stages in Europe. As it turned out, it was 40 minutes of football viewing I won’t forget in a long Alltime.was going well when Linfield took the lead on aggregate, but it all turned horribly wrong as the clock ticked towards 120 minutes. First they made a complete mess of a 4 v 1 attack, and then when the ball was punted upfield, Linfield skipper Jimmy Callacher slashed a clearance against his own cross bar and into the net. From there, you always felt that it would take a lot for them to recover and win the penalty shoot-out, and so it proved. The post-match moratorium online made for cheerless reading, and I found I had common ground with Daniel McDonnell from the Independent who wrote the following day in his Friday newsletter: “I can’t stop thinking about Linfield today. Has there ever been an exit from European football like their defeat to RFS Riga?” Our own Conan Byrne tweeted afterwards, giving a player’s “Iperspective:can’tgetmy head around the Linfield game!! That is the worst feeling you could possibly go through as a footballer. To be the first team from the NIFL to compete in the European group stages and to lose so cruelly is something that will haunt those players forever!!” What probably makes it worse is that many of the Linfield players all have moments to look back on and regret. The four players involved in the ill fated 4 v 1 botch up, the captain Jimmy Callacher who scored the own goal, the two players who missed the opening two penalties to put them on the back foot in the shoot out, and even manager David Healy’s decision to substitute ex-Dundalk man Chris Shields with three minutes left may well be a decision that he wouldn’t make now with hindsight. Painful moments for them all to reflect on. For sure, football can be a cruel old game sometimes. O’Flaherty

Saints Rising charts the history of the club from its formation in 1929 through to the end of a decade of extraordinary League of Ireland success in 1961. It is the first book on ‘the Pride of Inchicore;’ a Dublin institution with one of the great rags-to-riches tales in Ireland’s sporting Thelore.book tells the tales of Pat’s and Irish football legends like Shay Gibbons, Ronnie Whelan Snr, Harry Boland, Ginger O’Rourke, Dinny Lowry and a host of other well-known and lesser-known Supersaints. It looks at the history of the club's early grounds, including our beloved home of Richmond Park, and the place of ‘the Athletic’ in the proud history of Inchicore and the wider community.

Saints Rising was compiled over 4 years via newspaper archives, club memorabilia, interviews with players and fans, and a range of other historical sources. Written*** by Saints fan Dermot Looney, with a foreword by Brian Kerr, we are grateful for the support of St Patrick’s Athletic FC, the Patron Saints and the whole Pat’s fan community to date. But we need your help in getting the book to Saintsprint.Rising is a publication rooted in our St Pat’s community. We are asking that Pat’s community to help fund some of the book’s costs and get it into print. A Kickstarter crowdfunding model aims to cover about half of the book’s costs before it goes to the printing

Saints Rising: The Early History of St Patrick's Athletic FC is, remarkably, the first book ever written on St Pat’s history; most other League of Ireland clubs and our Dublin rivals have had their histories published. Let’s make sure our great history is told too! From their formation as a team of young railway workers playing in the Phoenix Park to the golden era of League of Ireland titles and FAI Cup success, St Patrick’s Athletic rose like no other club in Irish football.
