welcome This year St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School celebrates our 60th year, our Diamond Jubilee, with the school wide theme of Community. As I shared at Back to School Night in September, to me creating Community requires connection, communication, and collaboration. With this report we target the “communication” piece as we present our first ever State of the School in an effort to provide context around our day to day operations and as well as broader strategic thinking.

The Tuesday before our State of the School presentation, I attended the screening of A Case for Love. In the movie, The Right Revd Bishop Curry talks about unselfish love and how it manifests itself as kindness. He talks about how kindness builds community.

And for me the lightbulb went off. Kindness. Community. Our St. Patrick’s Community of Kindness. Bishop Curry also shares that one way to show kindness is to show respect for others. And, to me, tonight is one token of respect from our Leadership Team and Board of Trustees to you -- our parents

parents, our faculty, our staff, our community. By sharing this information, we hope that you will see how much love and care we put into St. Patrick’s and feel our respect for each member of the community. This is not my work alone. A number of presenters worked together to compile the State of the School presentation. Our hope is that you feel a sense of respect, an openness in communication, and a partnership that is rooted in our shared love of St. Patrick’s and our desire to provide a stellar educational experience within a community of kindness.

institutional health: community, connection, and communication recognizable brand This year, we refreshed our logo, designated school fonts, identified a color palette, and created a brand style guide with instructions on use of the School name, when to use the variety of logo styles, including size and placement, and guidelines on how to capture a sense of the ”St. Patrick’s experience” through words and photos. This branding provides a consistent look and feel that enables the broader community to instantly identify and connect what they see with St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School.

From our School uniforms, to yard signs, to car decals, to spirit wear, to athletics, we want St. Patrick’s to be easily identifiable and remembered for its vibrant culture and its extraordinary community!

telling our story We aim to communicate the mission of St. Patrick’s in a variety of ways and to deepen and raise further awareness about the unique value of St. Patrick’s through strategic messaging, collaborative efforts, and community-wide participation in the life of the school. Simply said, we want to tell our story.

Whether it’s a current family, a prospective family, or someone who is brand new to the Conejo Valley, we want to celebrate the exciting and nurturing School that St. Patrick’s is known to be. Our refreshed website incorporates photos and video content, we maintain a consistent presence on social media to share the life of the School with the public, and we invite prospective families to campus so we can learn more about their interests and so they can experience St. Patrick’s for themselves.

Internally, we want to ensure the communications tools you are using are user-friendly so that you can find the information you need and in a timely fashion. We stay connected to families through our new parent portal, meetings, email, the WOW newsletter, school events, and conversations.

And most importantly, we are constantly engaging with our current families, so that you can share your own unique experiences with friends and those who may be looking to come to St. Patrick’s. Word of mouth is the number one reason prospective families list when asked how they heard about St. Patrick’s. And we are grateful to you, our parents, for sharing your thoughts and experiences!

All of these channels are being implemented simultaneously so that we can share the St. Patrick’s story. Now more than ever, it is especially important to keep these channels of communication open and engaged.

institutional health: connecting and reconnecting with families With this year’s schoolwide theme of Community our goal is to help families and friends connect and reconnect with St. Patrick’s.

For our current families, the Parent Association organizes events throughout the year to support fellowship within our community. Such events include summer playdates for new families, the Fall Fest, Holly Jolly Christmas, Wine Night, and many more!

I know as a mom at my children's’ former Schools, volunteering was the biggest way I could give back, both inside and outside the classroom, and St. Patrick’s enjoys working with our faculty and staff to offer opportunities for you to volunteer on campus.

And if you love fundraising events, the Parent Association has got you covered with events such as the Jog-A-Thon and the Spring Gala and Auction. These events help raise funds to support the extras for our students, faculty, and staff. This year the PA fundraising provided a set of 25 new iPads with durable keyboard cases to be shared by all our classes, a new shed for PE equipment, that is being installed over Spring Break, and two bottle filling stations to provide chilled, filtered water for our students and teachers. We are so appreciative of the Parent Association Board for working tirelessly to bring our community together for fun and raising money, too!

Successful Enrollment Management considers much more than simply recruiting and enrolling new students; we also consider our School’s academic program and desired educational outcomes, internal and external market data, financial strategy, and our School’s composition and educational goals. In other words, our School’s Enrollment strategy requires a strong working relationship with many members of the St. Patrick’s leadership, faculty, staff, and parent community.

welcome to our community Our admission objectives extend beyond just filling seats – we aim to bring in families who resonate with our mission, values, and goals. To ensure the best candidates, we have a multi-step admissions process that includes a parent tour and interview, KR and K assessments, shadow days for students entering first grade or above, and submission of documents including school records, test scores, and teacher recommendations. We evaluate applications and all supporting documents to determine the most qualified and best-suited candidates.

As we all know, at the heart of St. Patrick's lies a close-knit community ambiance, and preserving this essence is fundamental to our admissions goals. To this end, we aim for an average student-teacher ratio of 8:1 and an average class size of 17.

To exemplify our "Community of Kindness," this year, newly enrolled families will receive a Welcome Basket complete with a yard sign and other St. Patrick's spirit gear.

Looking ahead, we are excited to host a New Parent Social in April and also welcoming new families to join us on campus for our first-annual St. Patrick’s 101 event, where new families will learn about everything -- from carpool, to uniforms, to the school calendar, to how to get involved -and can begin mentally preparing for the first day of School in August.

Also, before we break for summer, we will assign each new student to a group of buddy families so that our newest St. Patrick’s families can engage and feel welcomed into our School Community.

enrollment past, present, and future

Here is a look at our enrollment since our last accreditation. Before the pandemic, the School’s enrollment was declining for a two-year period.

Thankfully, due to a number of factors including our ability to offer in-person instruction during an uncertain time, our enrollment rebounded. We are pleased to share that today our enrollment is as healthy and stable as it has been in the past 7 years. And, with our program expanding down to KR and up to 8th grade, we predict a target enrollment of approximately 175 students in KR through 8th grade by the 2025-26 school year.

Our enrollment is currently in a healthy and robust state. A record number of inquiries and applications, in combination with a low attrition rate, has resulted in a stable and healthy enrollment with a growing waitlist.

We could not have achieved this without all of you. Our students and their families are the primary reason new families choose to apply and enroll at St. Patrick's. We appreciate your support in spreading the St. Patrick's message. It is certainly an exciting time to be a part of St. Patrick's!

institutional health: welcome from the Board of Trustees

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for joining us this evening. The St. Patrick’s Board of Trustees consists of 12 volunteers including current and alumni parents, Church parishioners, and other members of the local community. Every trustee is passionate about our School’s mission, our strong academic program, our Community of Kindness, and the joyful learning that St. Patrick’s provides. The board’s work is strategic; we aren’t involved in daily operational matters. Those we delegate to Dr. Johnson, who is our only employee.

The board has the fiduciary responsibility to approve the school’s budget, to endorse the School’s audit, to oversee the management of the school’s investments and to support the operational budget in managing the campus. driven primarily by two factors, Enrollment and Fundraising.

institutional health: financial outlook

As you would expect, tuition is the School’s primary source of revenue, comprising 90% of the funds we need to operate St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School. The rest of the budget is funded through charitable giving (e.g. the Annual Fund Campaign, Gala and Auction, designated gifts, etc.) Of our operating budget, approximately 75% each year supports compensation, which is typical for a nonprofit, independent school like St. Patrick’s.

As is common at most independent schools, there is a gap between tuition and the actual cost of a St. Patrick's education. Your tuition dollars cover 83% of our school’s operations budget – and in a few slides you will see why your giving to the Annual Fund is so important to bridge the gap.

The Board’s role is to ensure that St. Patrick’s Is financially stable and able to deliver on its mission for children far into the future. St. Patrick’s is in solid footing financially, as a trustee and treasurer for the past three years, I have gotten to see first-hand the strategic work of this talented group of volunteers.

Families in independent schools should expect an annual tuition increase. Tuition increase factors include: general inflation, what other schools are charging based on an in-depth benchmarking analysis each year, our commitment to maintaining competitive compensation and benefits for our talented faculty (a differentiating factor for St. Patrick’s), improvements to the building and grounds, and changes in operating costs.

At St. Patrick’s over the past seven years, tuition increases have ranged from 2.6% to 8.9% with an average of 5.35%. For the 2024-25 school year, tuition will increase by 5.4%, which is right within the middle of the range of the last seven years.

fundraising

In the Fall each year, the School hosts a 6-week campaign to raise money for the Annual Fund. After years of low participation, the goal of this year’s Annual Fund campaign was 100% participation.

For the first time in over a decade, both the Faculty and Staff AND Board of Trustees reached 100% participation. Parent participation, while not 100%, showed a remarkable 69 point growth to reach 82% participation.

As you can also see from the graphs, this was a record-breaking year for the Fund. Thank you, St. Patrick’s Community for your amazing support as we work to bring unique experiences to each of your children inside and outside of the classroom.

Fundraising is key to the institutional health of our School. Here is another way of thinking about why charitable giving, in addition to paying tuition, is so important to the financial health of the School: As you look at the graph on revenue and expenses, consider the analogy of purchasing a banana at the store to paying your child’s tuition at St. Patrick’s.

It costs the store $1 to sell you a banana.

But you pay only 82 cents and enjoy the whole banana.

How does the store pay for the other 18 cents?

fundraising: bridging the gap

The Annual Fund, along with revenue from the Gala and Auction, Wine Night, and other fundraisers, helps to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of providing this remarkable St. Patrick’s experience.

St. Patrick’s recognizes and depends on the generosity of its Board of Trustees, current parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty/staff, and friends to maintain a viable operating budget, to employ faculty and staff, and to enhance a variety of School programs. This graph provides a breakdown of our revenue and expenses and notes how important the Annual Fund is to the School as the gap between tuition and the full St. Patrick’s Experience is approximately $2,000 per student.

Your gift has an impact on students, faculty and staff, and our campus. The student experience wouldn’t be the same without your support.

student experience: academic excellence Our mission to “inspire and equip children to courageously transform the world” serves as our north star when designing our student experience.

As students journey from KR through eighth grade, their path is supported by the four foundational pillars of our Heritage Statement.

At St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School, academic excellence is at the core of our educational mission. Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to providing students with a rigorous and enriching academic experience.

With a curriculum designed to challenge and inspire in all subjects, our students consistently excel in their studies. Low student to teacher ratio and personalized attention ensure that each student receives the support they need to reach their full potential. Moreover, our commitment to fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a love of learning equips our students with the skills necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world. We take pride in the academic achievements of our students, who consistently demonstrate excellence in their pursuits, both within our School community and beyond.

We use research-based assessments throughout the school to gauge student progress, confirm program strength, and guide adjustments as necessary.

These include formal and informal evaluations as well as formative and summative normed assessments. Educational Records Bureau – or ERB – is a nationally recognized standardized assessment organization and the writer of the Milestones and CTP assessments our students take at various points between second and eighth grades. All of these measures contribute to our understanding of our students as we create curriculum and shape academic experiences.

To ensure our quality academic experience extends into the future, the faculty are currently engaged in a curriculum audit, documenting what we do well, diving into current research around education, seeking alignment, and evaluating curriculum for possible future adoption.

student experience: creativity In addition to our excellent academic curriculum, St. Patrick’s offers classes in art and music to provide a well-rounded educational experience while discovering talents and developing a love of creative expression that can last a lifetime.

The Visual Art Program hones the students’ artistic vocabulary through handson exploration, skill development, and knowledge and appreciation of art history, while reinforcing the elements of art and principles of design.

The Music Program aims to instill a lifelong love and appreciation of music through creative activities that incorporate the elements of music fundamentals, historic and contemporary genres and composers, vocal performance, and playing instruments including ukulele and guitar.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in Performing Arts through grade specific plays, electives, and after school clubs.

Additional after school clubs, such as chess, herpetology, art, dance, and cooking allow students pathways to explore their passions.

student experience: spiritual foundation What a privilege it is to serve at St. Patrick’s.From the moment you walk onto the grounds you are greeted with “good mornings” and smiles. It is the commitment that each person is made in the image of God and is valued, respected and loved.

If you join us at our weekly Chapels, you will find in the opening statement of the forward in the Chapel Book, “We serve God in Christ.” We make no apology for being an Episcopal school and as the school day begins, we seek to be faithful that every child knows they are truly loved by God. - The Reverend Sarah Kitch Chaplain

At St. Patrick's, our Episcopal Identity provides the spiritual foundation from which the student experience grows.

Episcopal schools are Christian communities that integrate spiritual formation into children’s education.

The Baptismal Covenant calls us to seek and serve Christ in all persons and to respect the dignity of every human being.

Episcopal schools place high value on reason and critical thinking, which contributes to Episcopal schools’ commitment to teaching without indoctrination, a trait that sets us apart from many other Christian schools.

A school’s relationship to its Episcopal Identity is core to its being and should outlast any constituency.

chapel: an inter-faith experience Each Tuesday and Thursday Chapel is invested in the students knowing that they are always welcome in church just as they are, that they are seen by God, that they are loved and have destiny and purpose because they are a unique thumbprint on the world as they make their mark.

Our worship time is collective so that each student may have ownership of their time in Chapel.

Additionally, all Chapel movements -- from greeters, to acolytes lighting candles, to readers of the lessons and prayers -- are provided by the students. In this way each student takes a turn participating in making our chapel come alive and sharing a corporate experience of worship.

Greetings and prayers in other languages help us to know the voice of God through many different cultures, languages, and people. It invites students into a relationship with God, who is not only is loving but big. God loves people in Africa, in Ireland, in America, and God loves each of us at St. Patrick’s.

It is also why we seek to keep a vibrant interfaith experience through the year in our Chapel. God loves us all as we share our commonalities in faith traditions and learn with one another the respect and honor for others.

Our faith practitioners represent our student population that we may be inclusive of honoring all faith practices.

Scripture readings for weekly chapels are carefully crafted to honor, celebrate, and worship God as the center of life.

In every Chapel the students listen to the poetry and prayers of the Hebrew Bible as they rejoice in God and His magnificence around them. Students then hear stories of the life and experience of Jesus, and hear of Jesus’ healing, teaching, and love.

Our Chapel worship seeks to be creative, inclusive, age-appropriate, and draws fully on the Liturgical Calendar and seasons of the Episcopal Church. It is faithful to be a regular part of school life, including sharing in the Eucharist once a month as we say, “everyone is welcome to the table.”

The experience of Chapel each week seeks to offer community life and religious formation that is meaningful, r age-appropriate, and purposeful in teaching Christian tradition and fostering dialogue with other faith traditions. We hope this will build a sure foundation of God’s love that guides all who attend to build lives of genuine meaning, purpose, and service in the world.

values classes We build upon the foundation of Chapel lessons during Values classes as we focus on character traits. Whether talking about manners and respect or leadership, each class is carefully designed to hold up a mirror to define ourselves in contrast to or in concert with Christian virtues. Values lessons are planned and organized to introduce a topic to the students, then to engage them in discussion and life experience, and finally to make practical applications in their lives, often thought of as “what is the takeaway.” The cornerstone of our community life is forgiveness and compassion -- a community of kindness -- and modeling that, explicating that in teaching, and meeting that practice daily on the playground, in the classroom, and during after school activities is the continual thread throughout our community.

Classes are formatted and designed in a variety of ways. One day it might be walking the Labyrinth, another day it might be sitting quietly on the rug to hear a story. Whatever it is, it is only a vehicle for the same principals, foundation, and cornerstone of what we believe for every student: that God is the center of life, that we are models of God’s love and Grace, and that we are a part of God at work in the world.

student experience: servant leadership Our values are also reflected in our service learning projects as we are called to serve the world. It is learning and practicing compassion seen in the eyes of all people that we seek to embody in our teaching. It is important for us to not only take care of each other within the St. Patrick’s community but also be good neighbors and Thousand Oaks community members. And more importantly we want to give back.

St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School takes great pride in nurturing leadership skills in our students, which ultimately supports their confidence and personal growth. Two standout program that contribute to this development are our family groups and buddy program, where older students take on the role of mentors and guides for their younger counterparts. This interaction not only builds strong friendships but also instills within our students a sense of responsibility and leadership.

Leadership development also occurs through serving as speakers during Chapel, Student Council positions, participating in presentations to the School community, weekly classroom jobs, and more. We emphasize the importance of leading with kindness, teaching students that leadership is not just about authority but also about empathy and understanding, ensuring that they grow into confident and compassionate individuals.

If you peek into any classroom, you will find hallmarks of our Episcopal Identity in the student experiences. We teach care and attention to God’s creation through conservation; we provide outlets for creative expression of inner growth

programs are inclusive and based on teachers’ knowledge of students as unique, individual learners; and we teach students to give of their time and talents through service to meet the needs of others.

student experience: signature programs Hallmark programs that broaden students’ experiences are crucial to the St. Patrick’s experience, and to distinguish them from academics, we’ve labeled them “Signature Programs.”

St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School firmly believes that experiential learning is an essential component of our curriculum. This approach is reflected in the School's unique programs, including outdoor education experiences, serviceleadership travel, countless field trips, cross-curriculuar hands-on activities at every grade level, and multi-age family groups that meet regularly.

This year we launched our Athletics program and joined the Tri Valley Christian Athletic League. Our program goals are to build community, increase student engagement, align the P.E. curriculum with athletic seasons for targeted skills development outside of regular practice time, to think creatively about space constraints, survey students, expand our sport offerings, and further increase student participation.

The School's experiential programs make learning more engaging, foster a deeper understanding of concepts, and build class unity and individual confidence. They encourage exploration and a thirst for knowledge from an early age, promoting an enduring love for learning.

Our Signature Programs continue to provide a holistic education that extends classroom learning, encourages students to explore different areas of interest, teaches new skills, and helps children deepen their understanding of the world around them.

accreditation accrediting organizations and memberships St. Patrick’s is accredited by three well respected, regional organizations: the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles. We are also members of the non-accrediting, national organizations, the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES).

accreditation metrics Schools are assessed in six key areas: 1. Institutional purpose and core values 2. Teaching and learning 3. Financial sustainability 4. Operational purpose and core values 5. Institutional stewardship and leadership 6. Institutional improvement and sustainability 24

the accreditation process Our accrediting bodies require that we complete an intensive self-study every 7 years and provide documentation that we are adhering to the standards they have set. The School produces a substantial self-study report that demonstrates our compliance with shared standards, highlights our specific strengths, identifies areas for growth, and addresses our sustainability as a strong, mission-oriented organization.

The self-study takes more than a full school year, and at the end of it, a joint CAIS and WASC Visiting Committee comes to campus to meet with constituencies, observe classes, review documentation, and confirm that we are doing what we say we are doing and that we are adhering to their standards. The Visiting Committee issues commendations and recommendations, and at the three-year mark – between re-accreditations – we are required to submit a shorter report detailing what we have done in response to each of the Committee’s summary recommendations.

These professional, structured processes help you know that as a CAIS/WASC-accredited school, we comply with stringent governance, educational, financial, and operational standards and that the work we do supports our mission.

It is important to note that St. Patrick’s is the only school in the Conejo Valley accredited by CAIS. Other area schools, such as Oaks, Bethany, Ascension Lutheran, St. Pascals are accredited by other entities, but they are not held to the higher standards that CAIS requires including inclusive, nondiscriminatory policies and a demonstrated ongoing commitment to school and educational program improvement.

timeline Our timeline for this process began in the Summer of 2022 and it will end with our visit from CAIS/WASC coming up, February 4-7, 2024.

accreditation: site visit During our site visit we will have five educators from independent schools across Northern and Southern California. Our Team consists of three heads of school, a director of curriculum and instruction, and an expert in finance and operations. Team members bring experience in early childhood, K-5, and K-8 settings with enrollments of 350 and under.

Prior to their visit, team members read our self-study and familiarize themselves with who we are, what we say we do, and the areas we have self-identified for growth.

While on campus, the Visiting Team will meet with various members of our St. Patrick’s community, including students, faculty, staff, leadership, and a few parents and trustees. They will be in and out of classrooms, attending assembly and chapel, and talking casually with teachers, students, and parents.

The purpose of the on-site visit is to validate that we are doing all that we say we are doing, that we are upholding our values and vision, and fulfilling our unique mission. The team is not looking for “gotchas” nor are they comparing us to other schools. If our self-study is accurate, and we are meeting all the baseline requirements, then the visit will be a success.

Following their visit, the team writes a summary report that includes commendations about what we are doing well and recommendations for areas we can improve and grow. The report is submitted to the CAIS Board of Standards who then then vote on a term of accreditation.

accreditation: self-study summary what emerged as the school’s areas of greatest strength?

The School's areas of greatest strength are rooted in our commitment to our Mission, Episcopal Identity, and foundational pillars. One of our greatest assets is the deep alignment among parents that they choose St. Patrick's for the shared sense of values, rooted in our Community of Kindness. This type of alignment to our core value is something we can build upon and fall back on when other elements are in flux.

A second asset is our stellar service learning program that is woven throughout the curriculum and sustained through the entire school year. Students practice empathy as they develop a servant heart and make an impact on the greater community. It is a true embodiment of our mission, preparing our students to go forth and "courageously transform the world."

And finally, there is a palpable sense of love that each member of our community has for St. Patrick's. This includes faculty, former faculty, students, alumni, current parents, and alumni parents. Once you are part of the St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School community, St. Patrick's becomes an integral part of who you are, with service leadership and the spirit of kindness imprinted upon your heart.

Almost universally, every former faculty member, alumni, or alumni parent that you meet speaks fondly, almost reverently, of their time at St. Patrick's. There is such opportunity to cultivate this bond into continued involvement with and support for our School, through volunteerism, attendance at School events, and philanthropic endeavors.

What did the school discover about itself?

After some hard times during the past seven years, the self-study process reinvigorated our community and renewed our sense of resilience. St. Patrick’s responded to the challenges presented by the Pandemic and leveraged the opportunity by relying upon our strong academic program, the ideal size of our school, and the dedication of our faculty and staff to flourish in the years following.

Additionally, the self-study process revealed that the School has great capacity to hold traditions dear while simultaneously recognizing potential areas of growth and embracing change. The School community is poised for growth and excited about the possibilities brought by an expanded Leadership Team.

And finally, this process allowed us to appreciate how our Board of Trustees truly demonstrates future-focused, strategic thinking, thereby setting the School up for another 60 years of success. The parallel Head search process brought reassurance through the number and quality of candidates who were interested in St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School.

Participants who were involved in both the Self-Study and the Head Search emerged from the processes even more optimistic about what we have and what we will become.

We hope that this State of the School presentation provided a broader picture of everything that makes St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School such a special place, and brought to life our Community of Kindness and our respect for one another.
