OUR HISTORY

CATHOLIC ETHOS St Patrick’s School is a Lasallian school of the Catholic tradition under the care of the De La Salle Brothers (Brothers of the Christian Schools). St Patrick’s is one of 7 schools in a Lasallian network of educational centres in Singapore. St Patrick’s School upholds the universally held Lasallian values of Faith, Service and Community and the Patrician values of Self Discipline, Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Valour and Excellence.

In the school, the sense of community is upheld as each person is considered a

brother or sister. The relationship between the teacher and the student as well as between the teacher and his or her colleagues is of a fraternal nature; the teacher being the elder brother or elder sister to the student. Hence, the Founder wanted the Brothers to be addressed as Brothers and not as school masters so as to emphasize the universal brotherhood and sisterhood of every human person. The dignity of each human person in the Lasallian family is respected as we are all children of one Father, God.

Being a Catholic school, St Patrick’s is proud of its Catholic heritage with its religious programme which also includes Morning

Prayers,

Angelus,

Reflections,

Masses and Catholic societies. At the same time, St Patrick’s School is also proud of the students and teachers who are of other religious traditions and seeks opportunities for these students to lead prayers and reflections on significant occasions so that everyone will feel a sense of belonging to the Lasallian family.

BAPTIST DE LA SALLE The Patron Saint of Teachers, this is a brief introduction to his life story.

1719

1680: De La Salle felt himself "moved by the abandonment of the children of the artisans and of the poor." He formed a society of religious educators who live together in community, known as the Brothers of the Christian Schools. He gave up the canonry to focus his attention on the education of the poor boys in Rheims.

1683-1684: During the famine, St La Salle distributed his patrimony to feed the poor.

Died: 7 April 1719 1900: St John Baptist de La Salle was canonized.

1950: Proclaimed as “Special Patron of all Christian educators” by Pope

Pius XII.

CODE OF CONDUCT @ ST PATS SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT

Patricians practice values of Self-Discipline, Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Valour and Excellence (STRIVE) that provides the foundation for our code of conduct. We believe that all Patricians practice 1.SELF DISCIPLINE as we have a duty to ourselves and others 2.TEAMWORK so as to achieve our common goals 3.RESPECT in order to build our harmonious community 4.INTEGRITY so as to inspire others to do what is right 5.VALOUR to remain resilient in the face of challenges 6.EXCELLENCE to give our best effort and quality in all that we do In doing so, they grow to become BOYS of FAITH, GENTLEMEN with PURPOSE and LEADERS with HEART.

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY 1. Patricians are punctual for school, classes, CCA and other school activities.

If he is late in the morning, a Patrician displays fundamental manners by apologizing for his lateness. He knows to register his attendance, without complaint or disrespect, with a member of the student council at the front security desk before heading immediately to class. He will be issued a late slip that he will show his subject teacher upon entering the classroom.

2. As a means to help Patricians learn and appreciate the value of punctuality for school, Patricians who arrive late will need to demonstrate the understanding of being responsible for their actions.

2.1 Hence, serving community service during recess for late-coming is a common consequence.

2.2 If he repeatedly arrives more than 30 minutes after morning assembly, the Patrician accepts that he will be suspended from class on the same day.

2.3 Late coming records will be reset at the end of terms 2 and 4.

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY 3. For repeated latecomers, “Fair” conduct grades are given at the end of: 3.1 Term 2 , should a Patrician accumulate 7 or more late days for the semester 3.2 Term 4 , should a Patrician accumulate 7 or more late days for the semester 4. Patricians do not leave the school premises during school hours without the written permission of the Form Teacher and the Principal / VicePrincipal / HOD Student Management/ Year Heads.

5. In the event that a Patrician is absent from school with a valid reason, he must take the responsibility to submit, upon his return to school and on his initiative, a valid Medical Certificate or a Letter of Excuse (not more than 5 per year) from parent(s) or guardians.

6. Patricians are expected to attain 90% attendance before they are allowed to sit for the School's Examinations.

CODE OF CONDUCT @ ST PATS THE SCHOOL UNIFORM St Patrick’s School is an institute with a long history and rich culture. A Patrician knows that that he is part of a larger community of Patricians, past and present. It is a privilege to be a member of St Patrick’s School, and every Patrician wears the uniform with respect and pride. Patricians take pride in dressing smartly for school. He wears the prescribed school attire neatly at all times in and outside of school. Finally, he refrains from unauthorized alterations of the uniform.

2.1

THE STANDARD SCHOOL ATTIRE

Patricians wear their full uniform / PE attire whenever they are in school even during school holidays. Patricians, past and present, know that St Patrick’s School reserves the right to deny them access if they are improperly attired and / or have exposed tattoos.

THE CASUAL SCHOOL ATTIRE

1.The standard school uniform is to be worn on Mondays and is optional for the rest of the week. It consists of a white, short-sleeved shirt and long white trousers (for upper secondary) or white shorts (for lower secondary) and belt.

2. It should be worn, tucked in, with white socks and sports sneakers.

3.The school tie must be worn with the standard school uniform on Mondays during morning assembly.

4. It consists of a polo top and long white trousers and belt (for upper secondary) and white shorts and belt (for lower secondary).

6. The House tees and sports shorts can be worn during PE only.

7. They can be worn tucked out or tucked into the shorts.

8. The House tee and sports shoes should be worn with sports sneakers and white socks.

9. Before PE, Patricians will change out into PE attire before reporting for lessons and change back to the standard or casual attire after PE. 10. Patricians know and accept the disciplinary consequences (i.e. suspension from class and / or returning home to change) for wearing the wrong attire without a valid reason.

11. The casual sports jacket can be worn by the general student body. It can be worn with the standard or casual school uniform.

12. The formal blazer should be worn with long white trousers and belt, with black leather shoes and black socks.

- Only one button of the jacket should be buttoned when standing, and unbuttoned when seated.

- The second button should be left unbuttoned at all times.

13. Patricians wear white socks that covers their ankles. Patricians without proper socks (i.e. coloured, low ankle socks) will purchase a new pair from the bookshop.

UNAUTHORIZED ALTERATIONS TO THE UNIFORM 14. Patricians in Upper Secondary are given the privilege to wear long pants at the start of the academic year.

- The uniform reflects the school identity and as such, Patricians do not modify or tailor their school attire, especially ensuring that their long pants are not tapered and must cover their ankles.

- Patricians know and accept the disciplinary consequences (i.e. returning home to change and /or suspension from class) for wearing improper attire. A respectful Patrician understands that he can only return to school for lessons if he is in proper, unmodified attire and given permission to do so.

HAIRCUT AND FACIAL HAIR

15. As budding sportsmen with a mind towards athletic performance and foot stability, Patricians wear coloured sports sneakers that are designed specifically for sporting purposes.

16. Patricians refrain from wearing casual footwear that are originally designed for style and do not achieve the goal of athletic performance and foot stability. Sloppy footwear, loafers, street-wear, high cut canvas shoes, skate-boarding shoes, slippers and sandals are not worn to school as they do not serve the requisite purpose of sports footwear.

- Patricians know that slippers and sandals can only be worn due to a valid medical reason i.e. injuries / medical condition supported by medical certificate / memo.

- Patricians know and accept the disciplinary consequences (i.e. returning home to change and/or suspension from class) for wearing non-approved footwear.

17. Patricians pride themselves on being presentable and well-groomed young men.

They sport short and neat haircuts.

- The fringe, when pulled downwards, must be above his eyebrows.

- The hair at the top / crown must not be too bushy or thick.

- Hair at the side should not touch the ears.

- Long sideburns are not allowed.

- Hair at the back must not touch the shirt collar.

- There must be a gradual slope at the back.

18. Patricians sport an appropriate hairstyle.

- A respectful Patrician avoids having inappropriate hairstyles that include stepped, high fade, undercut styles, Mohawk and Faux hawk styles.

- Shaved hairstyles and razor lines are also considered inappropriate hairstyles.

19. All Patricians, with the exception of Sikh students, are clean-shaven. All facial hair including moustache, beard and stubble are not allowed.

20. Patricians keep their original hair colour and do not dye or highlight their hair.

CODE OF CONDUCT @ ST PATS HAIRCUT AND FACIAL HAIR 21. The school will conduct hair-checks twice a term and give students a deadline by which to cut their hair.

- Patricians comply willingly with school disciplinary consequences should they miss the haircut deadline.

- Patricians and their parents accept that St Patrick’s School reserves the right to engage the services of a professional barber to cut the hair of Patricians whom the school deems unacceptable after the given deadline. The cost of the haircut will be borne by Patricians.

22. Patricians who continue to sport long and / or inappropriate, coloured hairstyles and /or unshaven appearance will be warned and their parents notified. Patricians know and accept that persistently flouting the haircut rule will result in their suspension from class / school. A respectful Patrician understands that he can only return to school for lessons if he has met the school’s expectations for hairstyle and/or facial hair and given permission to do so.

ACCESSORIES, TATTOOS 23 Patricians know that there is an appropriate decorum for school, and the wearing of accessories is prohibited in school.

- Earrings, nose rings / studs, transparent / translucent / coloured ear sticks on the earlobes, chokers, bangles, wrist bands (either of cloth, string, leather, plastic or metal) and jewelry are not allowed in school.

- Fanciful / gaudy spectacle frames, coloured & fancy contact lenses, or any objects deemed inappropriate by the school are also not allowed.

OTHER PROHIBITED ITEMS

24. If it is necessary for a Patrician to always carry religious objects, it should be safely kept in his bag or pockets. Any request by a student to wear the religious object should be made to the Principal / Vice-Principal, and it will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

25. Patricians are not allowed to have any exposed tattoos on their bodies. The school reserves the right to suspend these Patricians indefinitely.

26. Patricians are prohibited from possessing any sharp objects, weapons and weaponlike items, including scissors and penknives that can cause harm to others. Other prohibited items include lighters, playing cards and any illegal items. Such items will be confiscated indefinitely.

27. Any sharp tools / equipment needed for lessons will be issued and collected back by subject teachers. The usage of such sharp items can only be used under the supervision of a teacher.

28. Usage of weapons and weapon-like objects to hurt and/or threaten others is a serious criminal offence . The school will take immediate disciplinary action and refer the matter to the police.

ASSEMBLY AND DISMISSAL 1. Flag raising ceremonies commence at 7.50am. Patricians assemble in the classroom, parade square or school hall by 7.30am (upper sec) or 7.45am (lower sec). Upon dismissal from the parade square or school hall, Patricians move off quietly and in an orderly manner to their classrooms.

2. Patricians who are Singaporean citizens must sing the National Anthem and take the Pledge. Patricians will take the Pledge with the right fist placed over the heart.

3. Patricians will also sing the school rally on Mondays and Lasallian song on Fridays with pride.

CODE OF CONDUCT @ ST PATS EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR IN SCHOOL 1. Patricians are RESPECTFUL of others in the community, STRIVE for positive TEAMWORK by maintaining good relationships with everyone and know how to disagree appropriately with both peers and teachers.

Patricians are SELF-DISCIPLINED and practice INTEGRITY to ensure that the learning environment in the school remains conducive for all students.

Patricians also exhibit VALOUR in the face of adversity. Finally, all Patricians aim for EXCELLENCE by giving their best effort and quality in all that they do.

2. Patricians leave the classroom during recess and do not eat and drink (except for water) in class unless where permission has been given (e.g. snack break).

3. Mobile phones are not used during lesson time unless with their teachers’ permission. All mobile phones should be kept in students’ lockers or switched off inside school bags when not in use. Refer to Section 7, subsection 7.4, point 13 of the school’s Code of Conduct for more information.

4. Patricians show proper respect to school property by not committing acts of vandalism on any property, in and outside of school e.g. graffiti, damaging chairs / tables, willfully using a fire extinguisher.

4.1 The school does not condone the extremely unsafe act of throwing chairs and/or tables in class. Severe disciplinary consequences will be meted out to any Patrician involved in this rash act.

5. Patricians speak politely and refrain from using vulgar language at all times.

5.1 Any Patrician caught using vulgarities, directly and indirectly, on school staff and peers will be subjected to school disciplinary action(s) and counselled.

CODE OF CONDUCT @ ST PATS EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR IN SCHOOL 6. Patricians leave class during lessons only with their teacher's explicit permission. Only ONE student is allowed to leave the class at any one time.

7. Patricians who represent the school for any competition and / or are in Student / CCA Leadership positions also know that the privilege of their selection is based on continued good behaviour in class and school. Thus a School Representative / Student Leader / CCA Leader accepts that: 7.1 CCA representation / leadership position may be forfeited if he commits a major and/or serious disciplinary offence in or outside school.

7.2 All outstanding detention hours are to be cleared before he is allowed to attend extra CCA sessions and represent the school in external competitions and events.

7.3 Appointments to Student or CCA Leadership position and/or CCA Representation may not be supported should he have a “Fair” or “Poor” conduct grade in the previous semester.

EXPECTED BEHAVIOUR IN PUBLIC

UNDERAGE SMOKING AND VAPING

1. Patricians are SELF-DSICIPLINED and DO GOOD in public. They project a good image of the school by behaving with decorum and in a courteous manner at all times outside of school.

2. They always wear their uniform neatly in public. They are gracious and respectful to all members of public. While using public transport, they are polite, orderly and courteous towards other commuters. They are civicminded and keep their surroundings clean and litter-free. They go straight home after school and do not loiter in groups especially during a global pandemic situation.

3. Patricians who disgrace the name of the school by committing Public Nuisance and Rash Acts; exhibiting bad behaviour (e.g. spewing profanities) and / or causing disturbance to members of public will face disciplinary action(s) from the school even if relevant enforcement authorities are concurrently investigating and taking enforcement action.

1. Patricians do not engage in underage smoking which is illegal under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act. Patricians strongly avoid associating with peers who smoke. Patricians practice VALOUR and INTEGRITY in reporting to the school authorities fellow students who they have seen smoking/vaping.

2. Patricians who smoke and/or found to be in possession of any tobacco / imitation tobacco product (e.g. cigarettes, e-cigarettes, loose tobacco, vape juice) will be caned and / or suspended. Parents are notified and students’ names are referred to Health Science Authority (HSA).

ICT ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY (STUDENTS)

3. Using, possessing and/or selling / distributing electronic cigarettes (“vaping”) is also illegal under section 16(2A) of the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act. Students found vaping will be severely dealt with.

4. Patricians found to be engaging in underage smoking and/ or possession of any tobacco / imitation tobacco product are considered culpable of the offence, regardless of whether they were in school uniform or plain clothes.

5. Patricians who are aware of under-aged smoking / vaping, or near such student smokers and did not report this offence are culpable of common intention. School disciplinary consequences will also apply to students in this category.

1. Patricians demonstrate the values of Self-Discipline, Teamwork, Respect, Integrity, Valour and Excellence when using ICT in school. Patricians will respect and observe the usage guidelines for ICT in school, as specified in the ICT Acceptable Use Policy. Patricians would at all times ensure that the computer equipment and other facilities provided at SPS are used only for the purposes intended.

1. Patricians will use the ICT resources according to the purpose for which they are provided, which is for teaching and learning activities.

2. Patricians shall not use / engage in any activities relating to the use of the ICT resources that will be in violation of the laws of Singapore, in particular (but not limited to), the Computer Misuse Act (Cap 50A, available at http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/) as may be amended from time to time. Some examples of such illegal uses are: - downloading, distribution, sharing or storing of seditious, obscene or pornographic materials; - infringement of any copyright and intellectual property right.

3.Patricians shall not reveal their assigned login userIDs and passwords to others.

4.Users shall be responsible and accountable for all activities conducted from their account.

5. Patricians exercise self-management, and respect others in the community. Under the Protection from Harassment Act (Chapter 256A), he will not cause intentional harassment, alarm or distress to others by the use of any threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour; make any threatening, abusive or insulting communication; or publish any identify information of the target person that causes harassment, alarm or distress.

6. Patricians will be discerning when accessing websites. They will avoid websites of unknown or disreputable origin.

7. Patricians will be responsible for all content that they upload, post, email, transmit or disseminate via the school network.

9. Patricians will not upload or download, send or post, enter or publish any content to the internet that is against the public interest, public order, national interest, racial and religious harmony, or which offends good taste or decency, or is otherwise indecent, obscene, pornographic or defamatory.

10. Patricians will not upload or download, send or post, enter or publish any content to the internet that is confidential, distasteful or prejudicial to the good name of the school.

11. Patricians will be respectful in all online communication with staff and students and their rights for privacy.

12. Patricians will be mindful of the need to protect their own privacy.

13. Mobile phones are not to be used during lesson / CCA time unless with the teacher’s explicit approval.

- Patricians who use their mobile phones in various parts of the school during selfstudy e.g. school library, canteen are considerate of others in their community. They use earphones to avoid disturbing others around them.

- During all lesson/CCA time, mobile phones must be kept in students’ lockers or switched off and placed in their school bags.

- Patricians know and accept the disciplinary consequences for possession /usage of mobile phones during lesson time will be for their mobile phone to be confiscated by the Student Management committee for 5 working days per offence.

For reasons of safety and security, a Patrician should not use his mobile device and social media in a way that is likely to damage the reputation of the school and its members. Neither is he to harass/bully/threaten another person(s) nor engage in doxxing.

- If any form of offensive material is being circulated on students’ social media, it must be reported to a school staff member immediately.

15. No recording in any form (audio, video or photo) in class is permitted. Recording is allowed only with the explicit consent of the teacher(s) involved. Recording of a teacher in class without his or her permission is an offence that may be constituted as stalking or voyeurism.

16. If there is suspicion of misuse or for the investigation of any disciplinary case, the school reserves the right to confiscate the electronic device (mobile and sim card) and to view its contents to ensure that the school rules are not contravened.

- The school reserves the right to instruct a student to delete, with immediate effect , any offensive or socially unacceptable content on any social media platform and/or stored within the mobile device.

17. Patricians know and accept that cybercrimes (e.g. fraud, identity theft, scams, cyberbullying) or stalking and voyeurism acts that insult the modesty of a female will be subjected to disciplinary action(s) by the school and also be reported to the Singapore Police Force.

CODE OF CONDUCT @ ST PATS Disciplinary Offences and Consequences One of the school’s key outcomes is to educate our young men to be responsible and positive influences in the community. We strive to promote a safe and supportive environment and a culture of care, and prevent challenging behaviour from occurring. Inappropriate behaviour are addressed promptly and corrected before they affect students’ development and well-being. Finally, the inappropriate behaviour are replaced with prosocial and appropriate ones.

There will be times when a Patrician is tempted to indulge in errant behaviour, and it is at those precarious moments, when he will really need to consider his actions wisely. Deliberate acts of breaking relationships with the staff and/or students are always met with disappointment from the school.

Patricians will need to learn and understand that they will need to face up to the requisite consequences should they exercise poor decision-making skills.

The consequences faced are meant to help students mend relationships through restitution, restoration and rehabilitation. Below is a non-exhaustive list of offences, severity level and some possible disciplinary and rehabilitative measures.

Patricians who willfully and repeatedly commit any major offence will be placed on a compulsory intervention programme, failing which he could be expelled from school.

Likewise, a student who displays unrepentant and incorrigible behaviour could also be expelled from school.

Updates to Code of Conduct The school’s Code of Conduct will be reviewed periodically during the academic year. All subsequent updates will be announced to the school, updated versions uploaded onto the school website and enforced with immediate effect.

ICT POLICY Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) Agreement (With students using computing devices) The AUP prescribes the effective, ethical and lawful use of ICT resources by students to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment in our learning community.

This policy applies to all students in St Patrick’s School and the use of our school’s ICT facilities, equipment and resources, as well as users’ personal devices (e.g. mobile phones). ICT facilities, equipment and resources include the following, but are not limited to, school’s internet network, IT Lab, hardware (e.g. laptops, tablets, computers), software (e.g. school’s learning management system, productivity software, online tools) and peripherals (e.g. projector, scanner, camera).

Kindly read and accept the AUP terms in this document. Please click the “Acknowledge” button on our Parents Gateway message to indicate your acceptance of the terms in this document.

General 1. Users are responsible for their personal devices. The school will not be held responsible for any damage, theft or loss of their devices. In the event of loss or theft of devices, users must make a police report and report the matter to the school.

2. Users should bring their personal devices home with them at the end of every school day.

3. Users’ personal devices are installed with device management software. When enrolled, the software will manage users’ device usage based on settings determined by the school. Users should not attempt to uninstall or de-enroll themselves from the software. Any violation might lead to disciplinary action in accordance to the school’s discipline policy.

4. Users should not use the school’s electrical power to charge their own personal devices. Users should ensure that their personal devices are fully charged before bringing it to school.

5. Users are responsible for using schoolowned ICT facilities, equipment and resources for the purpose of learning.

Personal use such as gaming and engaging in social media platforms is strictly prohibited.

6. Users are responsible for any resource that is borrowed from school for the duration of the loan. The user will bear the cost of damage, theft or loss due to negligence and face disciplinary action in accordance to the school’s discipline policy.

ICT POLICY 02

Account 7. Users are responsible and accountable for all activities conducted from their own account.

8. Users are responsible for the security of their account IDs and passwords. All account IDs and passwords should not be shared with anyone.

9. Users should change their passwords every 6 months. Failure to do so would constitute negligence.

10. Users are to use their full name as stated in their EZlink cards for all account IDs. Aliases, nicknames and pseudonyms are not allowed.

11. Users should not use school-owned computing devices for any online trade (i.e. buying and selling of goods and services).

12. Users should not use devices to store, modify or create content (e.g. documents, presentations, pictures, videos) that is pornographic or defamatory in nature.

Internet Access, Usage and Social Networking 13. Users shall not use the user account for any illegal activities. These include making unauthorised attempts to gain access to any account not belonging to him/ her, hacking into computer systems, spreading computer viruses or sending undesirable materials.

14. Users shall be discerning when accessing websites. They shall avoid websites of unknown or disreputable origin.

15. Users shall be responsible for all content that they upload, post, email, transmit or otherwise make available via the school network.

16. Users shall be mindful of the need to protect your own privacy.

Users shall not upload or download, send or post, enter or publish any content to the internet that is objectionable or illegal under the Singapore Penal Code e.g. content that is against the public interest, public order, national interest, racial and religious harmony , or which offends good taste or decency, or is otherwise indecent, obscene, pornographic or defamatory.

ICT POLICY 04

Email & Social Media 20. Users should not post or share any indecent, obscene, pornographic, defamatory material /message that offends and causes distress to other people.

21. Users are reminded that threats, harassment, embarrassment, impersonation and intimidation to others is a chargeable offence under the Singapore Penal Code.

22. Users shall not forward messages containing general appeals or warnings like ‘virus warnings’, ‘request for help’, by mass mail or otherwise.

23. Users shall not forge the identity of or impersonate another person in an email.

24. Users shall not knowingly transmit by email/message any harmful or malicious content (e.g. viruses) or any other content or material that may otherwise violate the civil and criminal laws of Singapore.

25. Users shall not flood an individual, group or the email system with numerous or large emails.

26. Users are expected to remain courteous and polite in all online interactions.

Privacy and Safety 27. Users should not reveal their personal details (e.g. phone number, home address, NRIC, passwords, or passwords of other people) openly online.

28. If users inadvertently access a website that contains obscene, pornographic, or otherwise offensive material, notify a trusted adult (e.g. parents or teachers) immediately.

29. Any attempt to alter data, the configuration of a computer, or the files of another user, without the consent of the individual, is an act of vandalism and subject to disciplinary action in accordance with school’s discipline policy.

30. Users shall not leave their computer and portable electronic storage media unattended. Where possible, the computer shall be securely stored in the student’s own locker.

ICT POLICY 06

Intellectual Property 31. Users should not access, download, copy or share any copyrighted materials (such as pictures, videos, music) without explicit permission from the owner.

33. The rights of all materials and data created using the school’s ICT facilities and resources are jointly owned by the school and the user.

32. Users should not own, copy or share software in an unauthorized or illegal manner.

The school reserves the right to record and retain data on schoolowned devices and/or accounts issued by the school for investigation or evidence.

Violation of any policies, rules or administrative procedures may result in a suspension or revocation of student’s account. In serious cases where an illegal act has occurred, the student may face school disciplinary action and/or prosecution in the court of law under the Computer Misuse Act (Chap 50A) and/or Protection from Harassment Act (Chap 256A).

CCA POLICY 01

ADMISSION TO PRE UNIVERSITY, JUNIOR COLLEGES & POLYTECHNICS For admission to the three year pre university course in a centralised institute or Pre U Centre, CCA grades may be used as one of the subjects to meet the entry requirements.

For admission to junior colleges, the minimum entry requirements remain unchanged. Nevertheless for admission to junior colleges effective from 1998, bonus points will be awarded for achievements in CCA to give students an advantage in gaining admission to a junior college of their choice. Students must first qualify for entry before these bonus points can be used.

Students who obtain an 'Excellent' grade in CCA will be given two bonus points, while those who obtain a ' Good' grade will be given one bonus point.

This is similar to the bonus point system applicable for passing the Higher Mother Tongue languages at ' O' level and for school affiliation.

The total number of bonus points a student can use including bonus points for CCA is capped at 4 points.

Students who meet the requirements for admission to the polytechnic can also use their CCA bonus points in their application.

CCA POLICY 02

COMPULSORY CCA PARTICIPATION CCA is an integral part of the student's holistic education in school.

Hence, CCA participation is compulsory at the secondary school level, and every student is expected to participate in a CCA from one of the four CCA groups, namely, Clubs & Societies, Sports & Games, Uniformed Groups and Visual & Performing Arts. Participation in a school based CCA allows the teachers to guide and chart the development of the student beyond the learning from the subject disciplines in the class room in areas such as leadership and character development, and the 21st Century Competencies (21CC).

A student may opt to participate in more than one CCA to broaden his experience, gain more exposure and learn a wider range of skills. Such involvement will be passion driven and students will not be awarded a higher attainment for the participation in an additional CCA .

PARTICIPATION IN EXTERNAL ACTIVITIES A student may participate in a non school based CCA or a community based activity to pursue his interests which are not offered in the school, but not in lieu of a CCA in school. The student must still have a main CCA in school as CCA serves to strengthen the outcomes of CCE. These external activities will mainly be interest driven and the additional participation will not contribute to a higher attainment level in this domain .

CCA POLICY 04

CHANGE OF CCA Students who are keen to experience a different CCA offered in school may opt for a change at the beginning of each academic year . In such cases, the number of years of participation in the previous CCA can be credited to the student's new CCA .

Continuous involvement in and commitment to the same CCA will be rewarded, and this is reflected through a higher level of attainment assigned to students who stay with the same CCA over the years.

Continuous and regular participation in a CCA throughout the secondary school years is fundamental to contributing to the quality of school life and overall student development with the students deepening their knowledge and skills in a particular area.

There could be several exceptional and valid reasons that may affect the continual participation of a student in his CCA, through no fault of the student. These include: ( i ) medical concerns; (ii) the closure of a CCA; (iii) no corresponding CCA for transfer students in their new school. In such cases, the student would be considered as having been in the same CCA .

CCA POLICY 05

STUDENTS ON EXEMPTION Training with National Sports Associations For students who have been selected to undergo a sustained programme with a National Sports Association, the organisation may seek the school principal's permission for these students to be exempted from the school's CCA training sessions. Students' participation in such a programme will need to be endorsed by the principal and monitored by the National Sports Association through progress reports. Once the training stint with the organisation ends, the students will have to resume training with the school's CCA so as to be recognised in the Participation domain.

Medical Reasons If a student is exempted from his CCA for a certain period in a year due to medical reasons, the 75% attendance for that year will be derived from the total number of sessions that the student is able to attend, given his medical condition (instead of the usual total number of sessions in the year). All medical reasons must be supported by a Medical Certificate or Doctor’s letter.

CCA POLICY 06

STUDENTS ON SUSPENSION If a student is not allowed to attend his CCA training sessions because he is suspended from school, the 75% attendance for that year will be derived from the total number of sessions that the student is able to attend, given his suspension (instead of the usual total number of sessions in the year). This is because the student has already been penalised by the suspension and hence should not be doubly penalised in terms of attendance. The school may also have given other forms of punishment (e.g. demerit points and detention) for the student's misbehaviour.

Similarly, if the student is suspended from CCA, the 75% attendance should also be calculated based on the number of sessions the student is able to attend. The student will only be penalised in his CCA participation if he willfully skips CCA .

LEAPS 2.0 LEAPS stands for Leadership, Enrichment, Achievement, Participation and Service. LEAPS 2.0 builds on the LEAPS system to better reflect MOE's current emphasis on Student Centric, Values Driven education.

This domain recognises students' leadership development. Recognition is accorded to students' ability to take charge of personal development, work in a team and assume responsibilities in service of others. In addition to formal leadership appointments, participation in student leadership modules/work shops, the National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA) and leadership positions in the school, CCA or student initiated/student led projects will also be recognised.

ACHIEVEMENT This domain recognizes students‘ representation and accomplishment in co curricular involvement beyond the classroom. Opportunities for representation and accomplishment present valuable learning experiences for students to learn discipline, resilience and develop their character. Students may represent the school or organisations endorsed by the school. Recognising external opportunities better caters to students' diverse interests and talents. It also recognises the community's role in developing the child.

Representation refers to being selected and endorsed by the school or an organisation endorsed by the school (e.g. the community club or national association ) to contribute, perform or compete. It need not be tied to his CCA in school.

Accomplishment refers to attaining accolades and awards at competitions, festivals, performances, exhibitions, conferences and symposiums where the student represents the school or other organisations endorsed by the school.

The details on the levels of attainment for each of the domains are attached at Annex A.

This domain recognizes students ’ participation in one school based CCA. Co Curricular Activity (CCA). Recognition is based on the number of years of participation and exemplary conduct and active contribution to the CCA .

Sustained engagement in the same CCA allows for progressive development of character, skills, knowledge and friendships, and will be accorded higher recognition.

This domain recognises students’ development as socially responsible citizens who contribute meaningfully to the community. Every secondary school student will contribute at least 6 hours per school year to the community. They can choose to embark on a Values In Action project (VIA). Students will be recognised for the time they put into planning, service and reflection, when participating in a VIA project.

Assessment is an integral part of the learning process, and must be closely aligned with curricular objectives, content and pedagogy. Assessment is progressively sequenced to support the developmental aims of the curriculum, is holistic and aims to develop the whole child .

The uses of assessment include: - Providing opportunities for students to demonstrate learning and understanding.

- Working on the feedback from assessments for own learning.

- Making evaluations about students’ level of attainment of learning outcomes.

- Guiding the design and delivery of teaching and learning programmes.

MODES OF ASSESSMENT For evaluative assessment, there are weighted assignments that will be conducted throughout the year and End-of-Year Examination (Semestral Assessment 2).

In line with the School-based Assessment (SBA) announcements in 2018, St. Patrick’s School has aligned its assessment policy in ensuring that learner-centred and balanced assessments are implemented.

The objective of SBA practices in St. Patrick’s School is to ensure that students continue to enjoy meaningful and deep learning experiences in school. This ensures that students learn deeply and develop skills to learn for life. The underpinning principle is based on the Singapore Curriculum Philosophy (SCP) of the Singapore Teaching Practice – learning flourishes when assessment is used in a developmentally appropriate manner to address learning gaps.

For formative assessment, different modes are used so that students can demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways, e.g. term assessment, quizzes, presentations, portfolios, written assignment, oral presentations, products, reflections etc.

FEEDBACK AS PART OF ASSESSMENT Teachers are expected to return all student work and tests promptly (to a maximum of two weeks) of submission for feedback to be effective. All marking are dated by the teacher.

The feedback must communicate what students have or have not done well (success feedback to indicate where the learner is at), and offer instructions on how to improve (next-step feedback advising how to get there).

Teachers can use marking codes to save time and make the feedback more accessible to the student. A copy of the codes should be provided to the students for reference.

After feedback is given, teachers must expect students to respond and make the necessary improvements to their work within a reasonable time period for the feedback to be effective and feed forward to students’ deeper learning.

Teachers must date the improvements when they have taken place.

For examination papers, teachers must return the scripts to students before the end of the term so that students can revise on work on improvements during the school holidays.

For character performance, teachers and students have conversations and interviews once per semester to talk about the development of the character of each student.

For students posted to the N(A) or N(T) course, they have the flexibility to take subjects at a more demanding level, if they meet the SBB-Sec eligibility criteria as follows:

Eligible students will receive an application form on the day of the secondary 1 registration. Each student should take no more than 3 higher-level subjects so as to ensure that he can cope with the overall academic demands.

COPING WITH THE HIGHER-LEVEL SUBJECT

Beyond the start of secondary 1, students who do well in school-based examinations may be considered to take higher-level subjects if found suitable to do so. Eligible N(A) and N(T) students will receive an application form after the secondary 1 year-end examinations, based on the following criteria : - 75% or higher in the subject; and - 60% or higher in the overall average; and - Teachers’ assessment of student’s positive learning attitude to cope with the higher academic demand Support, through bridging programmes, will be provided for these new SBB students .

CONTINUING WITH THE HIGHER-LEVEL SUBJECTS IN UPPER SECONDARY

Students are encouraged to continue with the higher-level subjects until the end of secondary 2, as students do need time to adjust to the higher academic demands. Students’ progress in the higher-level subjects, as well as overall progress in all subjects, will be monitored and support will be provided as and when necessary.

A student may continue with the corresponding higher-level subject at upper secondary if he meets the following criteria at the end of secondary 2: - Meets the minimum attainable level for the subject; and - Teachers’ assessment of student’s positive learning attitude to cope with the higher academic demand.

SBB & MOTHER TONGUE MOTHER TONGUE LANGUAGE

Mother Tongue Language (MTL) is a compulsory subject in a secondary school education. Students who are Singaporeans or

to study their respective official Singapore Permanent Residents are Mother Tongue Languages (MTLs): Chinese, Malay and Tamil.

A non-Tamil Indian may choose to take (a) Tamil, or (b) a non-Tamil Indian Language such as Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi or Urdu.

Students who are not exempted from MTL at PSLE level must continue to study an MOE-approved MTL-in-lieu such as French, German, Japanese, Arabic, Burmese or Thai.

It is the parent's / guardian's responsibility to ensure that their child / ward offer a MTL in secondary school.

The 'B' syllabus The MTL 'B' syllabi for Express and N(A) streams are the same.

N(A) students will sit for MTL 'B' exam when they are in Sec 4N. Students who fail will have to re-sit the paper at Sec 5N. Students who pass will be deemed to have fulfilled the language requirement for admission to a junior college.

MTL'B' will NOT be included in the computation of the aggregate score for admission to a junior college or a polytechnic.

Please note: The Singapore Examinations & Assessment Branch (SEAB) has reviewed its policy for students who are absent without valid reason for any of the MTL papers. Such students will have 'ABSENT' reflected in their result slips and certificate. This will apply to the GCE 'N','O' and 'A' level examinations.
