The Other Guys Rated 12A Director - Adam McKay The Other Guys is the latest offering from Hollywood's Comic Genius of the moment Will Ferrell. Here we see him teamed up with pop star / model turned actor Mark Wahlberg and reuniting with the director of Anchorman Adam McKay. Ferrell and Wahlberg play Cops in New York City's Police Force, where they are the brunt of their colleague's jokes and are the bottom of the pile in the office. With a stellar supporting cast of Samuel L Jackson, Dwayne Johnson (Best Known as the Rock) and Eva Mendes, this film had the makings for comedy of the summer, if not the year‌ but I left the cinema wondering what on earth I had just seen. The only part of the film I genuinely enjoyed was the character played by Eva Mendes, the gorgeous overtly sexy wife of Ferrell's character. To everyone he meets she is described as 'Plain' everyone else can see her beauty whereas this just goes over his head. Even Samuel L Jackson who is one of my favourite actors could not save this film for me. I found the comedy

2

to be 'try hard' and the references and quotes in the script just completely pointless and sloppy at times. However I openly admit that I am not the world's biggest Ferrell fan. As the only film of his that I have genuinely enjoyed and look forward to watching is Elf. But I really do feel that with the character we are given in 'The Other Guys' it is just a recycled Ron Burgundy from Anchorman with a few tweaks and pair of geek glasses to make us believe it is a different person. Upon saying this if you liked Anchorman and other films Will Ferrell has done then I can say I think you will thoroughly enjoy this film as there are some good one-liners and completely random moments that did make me chuckle. Eva Mendes' character is the stand out performance in this film for me and the exchange between her and Ferrell via her mother was for me one of the funniest moments of this film. Wahlberg's characterization of the cop who takes his job far too seriously proved to give a few comedy moments, and has helped bump up the rating of this film for me. So as I have said, if you liked Anchorman and other collaborations between Ferrell and McKay then get your popcorn and enjoy, but if not I would avoid.

October here we come, some may not like this month but personally it the best month on the calendar, the season really changes and Christmas is on its way. The downside being shorter days and LONG, LONG nights. This edition brings you a bumper choice of eating out. May that be Infuse in Stowmarket or The Bacton Bull, you guessed it, in Bacton! And don't forget a taste of Springbok at the Mendlesham Fleece. This month see's the opening of the Stowmarket to Cedars Park relief road "Navigation Approach". You may have noticed the picture on the front page taken by my own fair hand one evening on my way home from the office in Needham Market. Living that end of town I have really noticed the ease of getting Gary Rayner, Editor to Needham and Combs, even onto the A14 at Tothill now we don't have to take a gamble on the train gates being up. Next month's edition will have a bumper what's on guide, and as always we are happy to publish your events. Either email, call us, pop in the office or even send a letter letting us know of any events that are happening in and around Mid Suffolk over the festive period. We are also looking for columnist's to work with the Stowmarket Flyer to bring our readers enthralling content and exciting news on events upcoming and in the past. If this sounds like something you'd like to be a part of, please get in touch.

New guide to scooter safety launched in Suffolk Suffolk Constabulary and disability charity Optua are launching a new guide to using mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs safely in Suffolk. The guide has been put together following concerns that some users in the county are not aware of the safety issues involved in using scooters and powered wheelchairs. Mobility scooters and powered wheelMembers of Optua and chairs can provide more freedom and Suffolk Constabulary independence to many disabled and launching the leaflet older people. However, there have been some instances where mobility scooters have been used dangerously or thoughtlessly in pedestrianised areas, on footpaths or on the road. The new guide gives advice and information about the types of mobility vehicle available, where they can be used and how to use them safely and legally whilst out and about. Linda Hoggarth, Chairman of Optua, said: "Although it may only be a minority of mobility scooter and powered wheelchair users who use them irresponsibly, this is still concerning as they may be putting their own and other people's safety at risk. We have put together this handy guide which we hope will help people make the most of their mobility vehicles and take full account of their responsibilities. We are very pleased to have worked in partnership with Suffolk Constabulary to produce this booklet and thank them for their support." Road Policing Inspector Zoe Finn said: "Inappropriate use of mobility scooters not only impacts on the individual user, but other road users including pedestrians with the potential for a higher degree of injury due to the nature of the vehicles involved. We have dealt with incidents involving users taking to main roads and dual carriageways, failing to comply with road signs and directions and end up being injured or injuring others in collisions; often due to excess speed. We are backing this new booklet and hope users take on board the advice so that our roads

and street remain safe places to walk and drive on." The guide is available from Optua on 01473 836777 and will be distributed to shobmobility centres, and mobility vehicle retailers throughout Suffolk. It is also available to download at www.optua.org.uk

Could you benefit from a Health Walk? 'Stepping Out in Suffolk' are running a Health Walks programme in Mid Suffolk and are looking to attract new walkers and volunteer walk leaders. Health Walks are designed for people who would like to walk in a group, following a set-out route with the guidance of walk leaders. They are great for people who want to maintain or regain fitness, meet new people, walk in a safe environment, or who just really enjoy walking! Each walk generally lasts for around an hour and is relaxed and friendly. Walk leaders will always adjust the pace to ensure that everyone can take part. Health Walk leaders ran a programme of walks in Mid Suffolk this summer and feedback from participants was extremely positive. As well as the health benefits that people received from walking, many also found the walks sociable and fun. Walks begin somewhere that is accessible by public transport so that as many people as possible can take part. Anyone can go on a Health Walk: all you need to do is fill out a short health questionnaire. The walks do not need to be booked: you can just turn up on the day. 'Stepping Out in Suffolk' are also looking to attract new volunteer Health Walk leaders from the Mid Suffolk area. All volunteers receive training that is accredited by Natural England. This covers all aspects of leading the walk, from basic first aid to route planning. You could become a walk leader to give your CV a welcome boost, or just to share your love of walking with others. All you need to become a walk leader is a little spare time, a lot of enthusiasm, and the desire to promote wellbeing and fitness. A new programme of walks for this autumn will be available soon online and in Tourist Information Centres and Suffolk Libraries. If you would like to go on a Health Walk or become a volunteer Walk Leader then please visit http://www.suffolkcoastal.gov.uk/yourfreetime/steppingout/ or contact the health walks team on 01394 444501 or walks@suffolkcoastal.gov.uk.

At the height of their success at the end of the 1990s, The Corrs were selling out venues worldwide and gaining multi-platinum status on the album 'Talk On Corners' both in and out of the UK. The siblings went on hiatus in the mid-2000s, and it's been a little bit quiet since. Fast-forward to 2010 and now Sharon Corr has followed in her sister Andrea's footsteps in releasing a solo album, 'Dream Of You' - Breakfast Club's Jeremy Durrant caught up with her for a chat. Sharon, it seems like ages ago that you, Caroline, Andrea and Jim first found fame with 'Dreams' - it was 1998! Does it feel like a long time for you too? Gosh, that's insane! Yeah, it does actually - it feels like a different world as well. So much has happened in the meantime that it does seem like a different era, and the world has changed. Let's make one thing clear - the Corrs haven't split up - you're just on hold while you do family things like having babies. You've got two kids, how are they? They're fantastic - mine are three and four now and getting a little more manageable at night time! So: after being away from the studio for a little while, what's made you decide to come back and make this new record? Well, for me, I needed to take time out and have children, and I did that. But as soon as I got pregnant, I just wanted to get back into the studio and back out on the road! It's just what I do and what I love, and I wanted to keep up my writing while I was off the road, and I really wanted to do an album. I really get my kicks out of it! A lot of singers say that once music's in your blood, you can't get it out again? You can't, because the minute you try to move it out of your life, you get haunted by it! It becomes a need, like air and water - it really does get into your blood! The album is called 'Dream of You' and your own compositions make up most of it - but glancing through the track listings, there are a couple of titles I recognise, including a beautiful version of The Korgi's 'Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime', which is the first single - and, bizarrely, Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy - what have you done with that? That's a song that I've always loved and it was really huge when I was a teenager. Whenever I think of my teens, I think of 'Smalltown Boy' - it's just an incredible track. Funnily enough, I was in France on holiday and couldn't get to sleep because there was a booming disco on downstairs - and suddenly on came 'duh duh duh' (sings) and I thought 'oh my God, I love that song, I'm going to cover it' - so the sleepless night was worth it! The lyrics are heartbreaking, and really touching, and I wanted to turn the song on its head and make it as dark and troubled as the lyrics are. I got a note from Jimmy Somerville telling me he loves it, which was really nice. So was music a big part of growing up for you through your teenage years? For me, it was everything, and every year of my growing up was marked with a song or an album. It's always been a huge part of all my experiences. Your own compositions form a central part of the album - but of course you played the violin with The Corrs - what is it about your

instrument of choice you love so much? The funny thing is, I never really liked the violin, which is odd because I totally made a career out of it! Things come from where you least expect them the violin is a discipline, and I'm not great when it comes to that. I love playing it in my own way, just not how, say, Beethoven wrote for it. I started playing classical violin and taking lessons, then mixed it with more traditional influences - so my playing is a bit of a mix. I hated going to lessons though! You worked with legendary guitarist Jeff Beck on your album - how did that come about? I was recording my album in Dublin, and Jeff was playing in the city at the same time. As any guitarist will know, he's a legend! I managed to get backstage to meet him, and we got on really well. I asked if he'd play on the album a couple of months later and I sent him a track - a very old Irish song - and he fell in love with it. We were both thrilled and it's a lovely collaboration. Is Dublin quite a musically diverse city or is there just a lot of traditional Irish music going on? Oh, we've got a huge culture of music in Ireland - every second person plays or sings. There's a huge rock culture, a huge traditional culture but there's all sorts of music. We recently had a massive world music festival in Dublin which was great. I gather you road-tested your new material at Glastonbury last year? Yeah... that was quite a challenge! It was my first time up there, fronting - and the audience really responded well. I did a couple of songs I'd written in The Corrs, a couple off the new album and some traditional pieces and they seemed to really like it. Did you relish being up there as the centre of attention? I loved it! It is really terrific being up there, singing your own stuff - I suppose it's having a certain amount of control over your situation, which is great. I love being in The Corrs and the dynamic of having four of us contributing, which takes a lot of the hard work out of it. If it goes wrong, you can divide it between four of you! I couldn't help but feel sorry for Jim in all those years - being the only bloke being surrounded by three girls - was it hard for him at all? I think that, actually, it was good for him - he really stood out! But it was a bit tough too, in terms of camera space... we'd get male cameramen who wanted the girls and never the guy - but I think he did okay! And coming back with your siblings... still definitely on the cards? Yeah, I imagine we'll do something in the next couple of years. As I said earlier, we haven't split up, we're just doing family stuff - it's always on the cards!

Stowmarket Cricket Club's Successful Season

It's been a year of great success for the town's cricket club, which is based at the superb Chilton Fields facilities. Both the first X1 and the Sunday X1 have gained promotion; the second XI and Evening League teams have prospered, whilst junior cricket for both boys and girls has returned to the sporting agenda. Under the guidance of South African cricket coach James Mokonyama, the club has moved forward. James has worked in ten local schools on the Chance to Shine coaching programme and has made a big impact within the club, both in terms of his own outstanding performances and also with his extensive work along with club skipper and Youth Development Officer, Kevin Holland, at the club's weekly coaching sessions. This has also been significantly helped by the grant-aided bowling machine. Groundsman Clive Witherly has prepared in the region of 60 excellent pitches, these being arguably on a par with any in the county, and with the MSDC help has been able to put to great use the new turf lawn mower. A number of representative matches, including the county Over 60s and junior Kwik Cricket competition have taken place, and it is only just over a year since the England captain, Charlotte Edwards, conducted a coaching course for girl cricketers. With the season almost over, the plan is to have junior coaching sessions at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre, dates to be announced in the autumn. Match reports and other information can be found on the Stowmarket Cricket Club-Play Cricket website. The club is always looking to expand membership at all ages and abilities. New members are always welcome. Club Secretary, Clive Witherly, can be contacted on 01359 240019.

Suffolk Branch

The Historical Association For our second meeting of the 2010/2011 season, Suffolk author and historian Robert Halliday returns to give an illustrated talk on 'The Billy and Charley Forgeries - a Victorian Scam'. Robert has made the most thorough investigation of the subject and is regarded as the leading expert on the story which is one of the most unusual and amusing episodes in the history of British archaeology. The Billy and Charley of the title began to manufacture their own archaeological finds which, despite displaying mistakes and anachronisms, were still accepted as genuine by many leading archaeologists and collectors.
