A New Years message from the Town Mayor I do hope that everyone enjoyed a happy and peaceful Christmas. I would like to take this opportunity to express how delighted I am to see that town centre shops which have been empty for sometime are now being opened again. Over the past year there have been many good things that have happened in our town such as the opening of the new bridge linking the town centre with Cedars Park . Some wonderful events have taken place which brought the whole community together such as the Stowmarket Festival and the Christmas Festival. I was especially pleased that the town was awarded a Silver in the Anglia in Bloom competition, this demonstrates what is achievable when the whole town works together. One piece of fantastic news is that the John Peel Centre has been awarded £50,000 from The "People's Millions Lottery Fund". This will

enable work to be carried out at the old Corn Exchange to enable the venue to be open for events . It gives me great pleasure to see that things are happening on the old Seamans site which is with thanks to Mid Suffolk District Council and the portfolio holder for the regeneration of Stowmarket. We are living in economical distressed times but we in Stowmarket, will I am certain, work hard and rise above the problems and prosper. I would like to express my thanks to all the Town Councillors and to all the officers and staff of the Town Council whose hard work and devotion to duty inspires us all and makes it all happen to the benefit of all who reside in Stowmarket" Lastly but not least a big thank you to all the volunteers in our town who quietly and efficiently give their time for the benefit of others - how would we manage without them? In closing I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year with health and contentment for all.

Weather delays Skate park construction The sub-zero temperatures and unusually early snowfall delayed the start of construction work on the new skatepark. At the time of writing, we hope that work will start during the week starting Monday 13th December. Construction is expected to take around 10 weeks so, allowing for bad weather and Christmas, it is perhaps realistic to expect work to be finished in March 2011....... But Play Area work starts Regardless.

What will you stand for? People become Councillors for many different reasons, sometimes they are passionate about a local issue, or they just want to be involved in improving the lives of people around them. There is no 'Councillor type'. Just ordinary, everyday people, making a difference. People like you. You could be one of them. A new campaign has been launched, aiming to encourage more East of England people to consider becoming a local Councillor. A new website, www.beacouncillor.org.uk/east has been created to give an idea of what it's like to be a Councillor, and how to go about getting involved. As well as the real-life experiences of some of our local East of England Councillors, there is a host of further information about how to contact local political parties, where to find information about standing for your local council, and standing as an independent candidate. For more information and details on becoming a Councillor, please visit www.beacouncillor.org.uk/east.

Stowmarket Christmas Lights Switch-on Event What a great success the Christmas Lights

Switch-on event was this year! The line-up was excellent and was topped by a fantastic performance by the Ipswich Community Gospel Choir. Special thanks to the following individuals and organisations for their support and contribution to the event: James Redmond , TDG Contract Logistics, Paul Morris from Town 102 FM, Ipswich Community Gospel Choir, The Guides, Chilton Hall Primary, Cameron Kerr, The Mayor Councillor Poppy Robinson, The Town Council Maintenance Team, Universal PA, Dumbfoundus, Dave Collins, Ipswich Youth Steel Band, Polstead Press, ONG Graphics, PPG and Hudson Signs, The Stowmarket Concert Band, Mid Suffolk District Council, United Security Solutions, St. John Ambulance, The Stow Lions Club, All Retailers, All Charity Stall Holders We hope you all enjoyed the event and look forward to seeing you again next year!

Combs Ford Switch On Despite the freezing cold weather and snow, there was a fantastic turn out to see the Combs Ford tree get switched on by the Mayor at 6.30pm on 1st December. Guests were entertained inside the Boys Brigade Hall before the switch on with Dumbfoundus playing a selection of songs, while tombolas, raffles and games also took place. Santa also braved the elements to hand out sweets to the children. Thanks go to all members of the Boys Brigade for their fantastic assistance helping with the event.

StowFest grows in to a three day Festival - and moves home! Plans are well underway for a bigger and better StowFest in 2011. The whole event is moving to Chilton Fields and will be organised jointly by Stowmarket Town Council and Chilton Fields Sports and Social Club. It is tentatively scheduled to take place over Friday 3rd, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June with onsite camping on the Friday and Saturday nights. The Friday and Saturday will be ticketed days whilst the Sunday will be free entry. Co-ordinator Daniel Harvey said, 'We want to grow StowFest into a bigger and better event each year and the three-day festival idea with camping is not something that would be feasible at the Recreation Ground. Chilton Fields is a much bigger site and it also enables us to work in partnership with the Sports and Social Club who have been extremely supportive of the project and keen to get involved.' Plans are in the early stages at the moment, but the intention is for the Friday to become 'The Acoustic Sessions', Saturday will feature some top acts from around the region on the main stage whilst the Sunday will feature both a main stage and Amplitude Stage. The event is being meticulously planned with ample security staff being hired to ensure everything runs smoothly. The main stage will be positioned at the back of the club house to reduce noise impact and the camping site will be on the far side of the field, away from houses. Music will stop at 10.30pm.' More details about StowFest 2011 will be available early in the new year with tickets set to be made available online at www.stowfest.co.uk

Taking in a lodger Many may feel that a way to ease the financial burden of running your home is to take in a lodger, this may however have hidden taxation implications. At present a homeowner can earn ÂŁ4250 per annum tax free when letting a room to a lodger under the Rent-a-Room Scheme. It should be noted that a homeowner can have only one lodger at a time to claim this relief. With regard to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) a homeowner can still claim the Principal Private Residence exemption if there is only one lodger at a time. This means that any sale of your main residence remains exempt from CGT on sale. It should be noted that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) may consider a homeowner to be running a lodging business if they have two or more lodgers and this may make the income received subject to income tax and any part of the property let subject to CGT. In summary care should be taken when letting a room(s) in your home and it is advisable to seek the assistance of a qualified professional.

Happy New Year! 2011 is here already. We are pleased to report a peaceful Christmas and New Year period from a policing perspective with the majority enjoying festivities in and around the town. Unfortunately a few outlying areas of town and Stowupland experienced some graffiti in the New Year that is being investigated. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the police at Stowmarket on 01473 613500 We look forward to building on the positive relationships forged in 2010 and hope that crime continues fall in 2011. One on going problem continues to be parking and I would like to remind everyone that general parking is not permitted in the Town centre and out side the banks.

The Taxi Rank outside the banks is also often occupied not by Taxis making operating difficult for Taxis. Parking in the town centre, including for the personal collection of goods is not generally permissible by the regulations in the Town centre. Please be mindful that doing so could attract a fine of £30. The SNT have many upcoming engagements, please log onto http://www.onesuffolk.co.uk/SaferSuffolk/stowmarket/ and feel free to attend and speak with members of the policing team. In February together with Stowmarket Town councillors the SNT will be in the town centre available to talk about anything and everything. This is planned for the 24th. Please keep your eye on the website for more details. Wishing you the very best for 2011.

Despite the wintry weather, it has been a busy month for Salvation Army, especially off the field. With current First Team Manager, Danny Reynolds having a break from his duties in the new year due to family commitments, his current assistant, Sam Dickie has stepped up to the plate and will become Army’s ninth permanent manager. Dickie has impressed the management of the club while taking over from Reynolds while on a recent holiday and a look at Dickie’s footballing credentials show a pedigree on the pitch which will hopefully be evident in a managerial role. A former county representative at youth level, Dickie eventually progressed into the ranks at Stowmarket Town but he has also had a long affiliation with the Army making his debut back in September 1992. After more than 250 appearances and 70 goals for the club, Dickie will take over in January 2011. Dickie will inherit a team that has shown strong improvements in recent weeks, with two league victories against Parkside part of a four match unbeaten run. The only disappointing news for Army is that Jon Doughty, who had performed stoutly in the middle of defence since moving from left back, has now jetted off to Australia for an indefinite period. Doughty was captain for the day in his last match and epitomised his playing style when he smashed in a left-footed free kick with tremendous power low and hard into the Parkside net to give the Army the lead in a game where they eventually ran out 2-1 winners

high quality services to our local communities, and to achieve these we need to assemble a single management team, under a single chief executive, as soon as possible. This bold and decisive decision will move the integration process forward which is being viewed positively by Government and from what we hear, many Council Taxpayers."

Babergh and Mid Suffolk Agree to Single Chief Executive Plans by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils to bring together their staffing structures in order to make savings, received a boost during the last week with the proposal to recruit a single new chief executive being passed by both authorities. The recruitment process for a single chief executive will commence in January 2011. The chief executive will be responsible for the integration of services and the possible creation of a new single council, if the public support this and other criteria are met to satisfy the Secretary of State.

Cllr Nick Ridley, Chairman of Babergh District Council’s Strategy Committee said: “This is good news for residents, staff and others as it removes another layer of uncertainty as to what the future holds. The decision by both sets of councillors to give immediate clarity as to the process and direction of forming a new single management team is an important step in achieving these very desirable outcomes”. The decision to achieve financial savings by creating a single staffing structure across Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils will go ahead whether or not the two councils are abolished and replaced by a new single council covering central and south Suffolk. A final decision to make even greater savings by abolishing both councils and creating a new single district council will be dependent on a number of issues, including the outcome of a local poll in 2011 of all local government electors in the two districts, an electoral and boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England and the Secretary of State's decision during 2011.

Cllr Tim Passmore, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council said: "Both c ouncils have substantial savings to make, whilst continuing to deliver

they've managed to clear their diaries for a moment to join me.

She’s starred in musicals around the world and even scored a number one single off the back of one her productions – Nick Pandolfi has been chatting with the first lady of musical theatre:

Elaine Paige!

It’s like reading off a list of the good and the great of the music industry – I wish I had friends like yours! You mentioned Billy Ocean – who was in the area touring last year – he comes across as a very sincere man, who loved talking about performing on stage with his daughter. Yes, he is - he's a sincere and great guy. We worked on Denmark Street for all the singersongwriters that were hanging out in Tin Pan Alley in the late 60s, late 70s, and that's where Billy and I first sang together. I always thought how well our voices blended together, so he was one of the first people I rang when I decided to do this album - and luckily for me, he absolutely jumped at the idea and said yes straight away! When I was going through the list of songs, he chose You Are Everything right off the bat - it's always important for the other artist to sing something they want to sing. I was thrilled he really wanted to do that track!

I see Michael Bolton appears on your list of Elaine, you’re a very busy lady at the moment – collaborators – he’s a great lover of golf and we had a long conversation once about the Zen you’re back on tour this month, performing state you enter when playing golf - he didn't songs off your new album 'Elaine Paige and drag you onto the golf course did he? Friends', where you’ve duetted with a lot of well-known singers… you must owe a lot of No, I'm not into golf - I bored him about tennis! favours! John Barrowman, Billy Ocean and Barry [laughs] I'm only four foot eleven and a half Manilow all feature on the record - are they and I could barely see over the net, so it would really all your friends? never have worked. That was my initial dream A good lot of them are, amazingly! [laughs] Billy I was going to be a pro tennis player, but Ocean is an old pal from way back - we used fortunately my headmistress pointed out I was a to sing on doo-wops on other people’s albums bit short for it, and I think she saved me from when we were just young kids just starting out in myself! the music business! Barry [Manilow] is a pal and I've sung some of his songs recently when I did a jazz festival in Cheltenham - we kept talking about the possibility of recording together at some point and he's definitely a pal who’s come up trumps! John [Barrowman] is someone who came into a show I was doing Anything Goes in 1989 - whilst visiting his granny in Scotland! We cast him in the show and he hasn't looked back since! It's brilliant to think

10

this wouldn't have come together at all, because you need someone to keep making those endless phone calls and work everyone's diary out - but we pulled it off! Going back to your days in musicals: you made your West End debut in Hair, which has been revived fairly recently? Yes, last year in the West End with an American company! I went to see it on the first night, as did all the other Hair members here - all us oldies, now, went to see the young new youth of today playing the roles that we played all those years ago. It was quite a momentous evening - reliving all those old memories of our days as young people cavorting about that stage with beads and lots of hair - and now there were several of us - the men - that didn't have any hair! You’ve a long list of credits to your name – you took the lead in Evita, you’ve been in Cats, Chess… of all the productions you've been in, which one's really stood out as your favourite? That's a difficult question! The one you're in at that moment is the one that matters most Evita will always be very special as it was my first one, and it gave me a career. I loved Chess as it gave me a number one single with Barbara Dickson - but I loved also to do Piaf as it was a wonderful story, and a marvellous acting role for me – with all that French music! It's hard to pick one but I've been very lucky to have so many shows that I've really, really enjoyed to do. Tell me about your tour, because you’re back on the road soon? Yes, I'm going to be back on tour in February – we start in Southend on Tuesday 22nd February, with a date in Ipswich on Wednesday 23rd February before heading off up north and then back in London at the Royal Festival Hall on Friday 4th March... and then I'm off to the States to perform in Washington in ‘Follies’, so yes – I’m still keeping very busy!

It sounds like a logistical nightmare, getting all these people in the right places – did you have some help with organising it? Indeed I did - you couldn't do this on your own! I had Phil Ramone, who's a wonderful producer and someone I've wanted to work with for 20 years - he was very much hands-on - and a marvellous woman, Hermione Ross, who's my A&R rep at Warner Brothers Music. Without her,

Stowmarket’s Got Talent!!! A group of youngsters from Stowmarket have successfully made it through to the second stage of Britain’s Got Talent. Sara-Anne School of Dance were so excited when they got an audition at ExCel in London for Britain’s Got Talent. They had very little time to practise as only a week’s notice was given to them, so with intense rehearsals they made their way to London amongst thousands for a very exciting and special day. Overwhelmed by everything, the venue, lights, crew, thousands of people etc, they all had the biggest smiles on their faces and danced their

Stowmarket Middle at Christmas The traditional Christmas celebration of carols and readings at Stowmarket’s parish Church was a huge success for Stowmarket Middle School. The afternoon saw almost six hundred pupils and staff brave the wintry conditions and head for the Church of St Peter’s and St Mary’s, an astounding building at any time, resplendent at the time of the carol concert with 222 Christmas trees illuminating the gloom. The celebration was led by the school’s music co-ordinator, Liz Elstone assisted by Barry Fuel and Margaret Kinnear King. The choir, brass band and various readers all contributed to the occasion. After a lovely performance for the pupils in the afternoon, it was home for an hour or two before repeating the performance for the benefit of parents in the evening. The photo (top right) shows a packed St. Peter’s and St. Mary’s Church full of pupils from Stowmarket Middle School, who found just about enough room to sit among the Christmas trees!

best performance, enjoying every second. SaraAnne, Dance Teacher said “I am so proud of them all. They have worked very hard to achieve this standard and it’s amazing we have had the opportunity to be part of such a brilliant show” The Dance Crew were told they will be opening the first series of Britain’s Got Talent 2011 which they were all very pleased about and can’t wait to see themselves on television. It’s been such a wonderful experience for them. Sara-Anne is so honoured to be able to teach each and every one of them their special talents. Well done to Streetz Team Star Crew, your parents, friends and family and everyone who supports us.

Stowmarket Middle School at the Suffolk Forum On the 8th. of December we despatched Mr. Evans to Wattisham to the Suffolk Forum to hear about the wonderful opportunities that the Combined Cadet Forces offer young people in Suffolk. This picture (bottom left) was taken only moments before he pressed an exciting looking red button……………..and we are still waiting for him to return!! On a more serious note - if taking over the controls of an aircraft before your 15th birthday sounds exciting, if getting your pilots licence before you can drive a car sounds cool, if attending an international camp in Canada or the Caribbean sounds a bit more inspiring than a week in Felixstowe – see Mr. Evans and he will give you more details of cadet opportunities in Stowmarket. Not only are the possibilities limitless, they take place within a stone’s throw of the school.

127 Hours – Director Danny Boyle : Rated 15 127 Hours is the latest film from British Director Danny Boyle whose last film Slumdog Millionaire Stormed the Oscars in 2008. 127 hours stars Hollywood Sweetheart of the moment James Franco in the Lead role of Aron Ralston. The film is based on the real life situation Ralston found himself in for more than five days in 2003 when he became trapped by a boulder in Utah. Ralston wrote a book on this time called ‘Between a Rock and a Hard Place’. The one thing I said after I came out of this film was that James Franco had a lot of balls taking on this role, as 95% of the time it’s just him, the boulder and us. Many actors couldn’t carry that off but Franco does and convincingly so. The way he engages with the camera even though there is no one there it feels like he is play against someone, the emotion he put into the screams of pain and frustration

12

are excellent. We see Ralston make videos to his loved ones and these videos appear to get him through the situation. He still find time to be funny when apologising to his mum for not answering the phone. I will say this though if you are squeamish and can’t even sit through an episode of casualty or just don’t like the sight of blood. You may want to avoid this movie as three quarters of the way through we get to see the desperation Ralston felt out there when he cuts his own arm off to get out. This scene is quite graphic and made me look away in parts and made me feel a little sick a points. Danny Boyle has a really good eye for camera angles and uses them to full effect in this film. I must mention the supporting cast

especially Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara who play the two hikers Ralston meets before the accident. Even though they are on screen for a very small amount of time it proves important for Ralston and his survival. This film is a brilliant example of British film making being partly funded by Film4 and it shows that you don’t need huge explosions, Mass CGI and 3D to make a good film that will live up to viewers standards in the 21 century. Could there be Oscars nods for Boyle again and Franco…Possibly. Franco will be hosting the 83rd Academy Awards AKA the Oscars alongside Anne Hathaway on 27th February 2011.

Winter Youth Coaching, targeted across the age range of Primary, Middle and Upper School boys and girls, is designed as an introduction for the new season, where we will be entering as a minimum an Under 13 team in the local Ipswich & District league and an Under 15 girls’ team in the Lord’s Taverners

In addition: Senior Winter Nets will take place at Ipswich School: • Sunday 27th February 2011 – 7 to 9pm • Sunday 13th March 2011 – 7 to 9pm • Sunday 27th Match 2011 – 7 to 9pm

Stowmarket Middle School continued their medal success in Judo at the recent Eastern Area Judo Championships, held in Thetford, Norfolk. Nearly 200 competitors, from across the whole of East Anglia took part and the standard of Judo was very high. Three girls from Stowmarket Middle School fought really well to gain medals Lauren Best and Debbie Greeves narrowly missed out on the gold and gained silver medals. Cara Greeves was unlucky but still managed to gain a bronze medal, despite an injury. The Judo club at Stowmarket Middle School continues to thrive and now has about 20 members who train on Thursdays after school.

Stowmarket Volleyball 15:19 Stowmarket’s volleyball clubs will be putting on sessions for 15 to 19 year-olds in early 2011. The mixed sessions will run from 6-7:30pm on Monday evenings in the gym at Stowmarket Middle School, from the 24th of January until the 28th of March (no sessions on 1st Feb or 7th March). The sessions will be suitable both for beginners and those who have played before. Hopefully many of the participants will continue to play this Olympic sport indoors, on grass, or even on the beach for Stow Stingers or Stowmarket VC.

Contact Clive Witherly on 01359 240019 or by e mail wigg51@btinternet.com for further information and to reserve a place.
