BV Hicks BV Hicks Those of you who frequent Stowmarket will be familiar with the Hicks electrical shop in Ipswich Street. This family business originated in Ipswich. Victor Hicks was born in May 1897 and was the son of Thomas Whatson Hicks, a butcher. Victor later opened a general store in Hitcham. In the days of no pre-packaging the Hick's vans would deliver to customers in remote villages. He married Ena Harris in May 1924 and together they had a son Brian Victor in 1927. At a very young age Brian found his interest in radio and telecommunications and later on decided to pursue this as a career.

Hint and Tips

The Internet and Why

Tax Return deadline As you will have realised the deadline for filing your tax return on-line for the year ended 5 April 2009 has passed. Almost 6.5 million taxpayers filed their self assessment returns online ahead of Sunday's deadline. Now is the time to prepare for 2010 and avoid any last minute rush, unexpected tax bills and higher accountancy fees. Plan to have all records complete and with your accountant as soon as possible after 5th April. If your return is filed by 31 July 2010 you may be able to reduce your second payment on account, easing your cashflow. The earlier your return is filed the better. That way you will have earlier information about your future tax liabilities, or be able to make a claim for any tax overpayments. If you are employed and have a tax code and a tax liability of under £2,000 this can be collected via your tax code rather than paid over directly if your return is filed on-line by 30 December. Plan ahead and get organised so you can relax next January knowing that your return is filed and you won't have any tax bill surprises. For any help with your tax return, please contact one of our friendly team on the number below. If you have any problems or questions about your account please call us on 01449 798285 or see our advert on page 15.

Have you ever wondered how the internet came to be?? Well read on... "The Internet was originally developed by the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), as a means to share information on defence research between involved universities and defence research facilities. Originally it was just email and file transfer sites as well as the Usenet where scientists could question and answer each other. It was originally called ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency NETwork). “The concept was developed starting in 1964, and the first messages passed were between UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute in 1969. Leonard Kleinrock of MIT had published the first paper on packet switching theory in 1961. “Since networking computers was new to begin with, standards were being developed on the fly. Once the concept was proven, the organizations involved started to lay out some ground rules for standardization." Now we have Facebook, Ebay, YouTube, Google, and BBC IPlayer. If it wasn't for those universities needing to communicate fast and efficiently, we wouldn't be where we are now. The other reason the internet has been so successful is it’s FREE, you don't pay to access people’s websites and no law governs what people can say or create. Over the years companies have emerged that make the task of hosting a webpage and email address easier but the roots of the web are still there and you can if you want create a page and host it yourself for FREE.

Dick Whittington

Dick Whittington 2010 January 22 & 23 A production by The Company of Friends In the last Flyer we had an advert for Dick Whittington - the third and hugely successful pantomime by The Company of Friends. There were 3 performances each to a capacity audience of 250. Everyone had a great time, though all were fairly exhausted by the end of it, the adults much more than the children! Over 60 people helped during the performances without them the show couldn't go on! In 2008 Aladdin raised £3,941 and then in 2009 Cinderella £3,314 with all the proceeds being split evenly between the Friends of St Mary's Bacton & St George's Wyverstone. The money raised so far has been used at St Mary's for the stonework repairs to the north window of the chancel area and at St George's it has been used to repair the chancel door and to repair and raise the floor of the porch to allow for disabled access. The Company of Friends hopes to have raised about £3,000 this year. If you would like to join our happy band, or audition for next year's pantomime, please speak to Sue on 01449 781054.
