St Elizabeth Hospice A staggering £13,000 raised from this year's Kesgrave Music Festival will help fund a nurse for six months at St Elizabeth Hospice. The amount raised from the event, which was held in August, has just been announced. It was the fourth year friends and family of Kate Moyes had organised the festival in her memory and brings the total raised for her St Elizabeth Hospice tribute fund to over £50,000. Kate died from cancer in 2005 at the Hospice. She was 29. Debbie McCallum, who came up with the idea originally, and the committee of dedicated fundraisers recently handed over the cheque to Hospice community fundraiser Laura Backhouse (see picture). Debbie, of Kesgrave, said; "We are overwhelmed by the support we have had over the four years from businesses and the local community which allows us to make such an important donation to the Hospice. "It is great that we can donate this money in the knowledge that it is directly helping to support the fantastic nursing care the Hospice provides."

"This year's donation will help fund a nurse in the in-patient unit for six months. The nurses play a vital role providing specialist care for pain relief and other symptoms, whilst striving to maintain the patient's wishes and dignity. This donation will really make a difference." Living with ADHD The Devil Within A true account of living with ADHD If you've looked at a child supposedly suffering from ADHD (Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) and thought they just need a firm hand read on…. 'Can't you control your child?' tells the harrowing true story of Suffolk parents who've battled against the odds to keep their son from harming himself and those around him. From birth, Daniel Collins had a very severe form of ADHD coupled with Autism and learning and speech difficulties. This book tells what its like to be a parent of a child, with a mental illness which is still misunderstood. Richard and his wife Rosemary have two other children who've experienced first hand what its like to be shunned by friends and family because of their brother's extraordinary behaviour. This month Daniel turns 22, he's learnt to cope far better with his ADHD and he's accomplished so much more than was ever hoped and his father has written an account of the past 22 years since Daniels birth, not only to help to demystify this mental illness for which there are a great many prejudices but also to celebrate a life the family scarcely dared hope for in the very beginning. 'The teenage years were the worst times of all, there were many occasions he went missing and when I found him he would have blood pouring from open head wounds, due to his self harming and from assaults inflicted by others who disliked him because he was different'

www.flyeronline.co.uk

Richard Collins with his son Daniel (22) an ADHD sufferer who's overcome harrowing odds to pass his driving test ADHD sufferers still face stigma from a large section of the community, despite massive research and medical records of this illness dating back to the 1840's there are still those who bafflingly fail to recognise this as a real mental illness. ‘Can't you control your child?' is available in paperback £5.99 + £1.60 p&p ISBN 9780955483639. Quit Smoking Quit Smoking This Christmas With Christmas fast approaching there are many reasons why it's the perfect time to give up smoking. For forty seven year old Andrew Rackham it was his health which prompted him to quit. Andrew is a groundworker from Ipswich and has smoked for over thirty years. Andrew had given up once before for six years but one night when he was out having a beer and someone offered him a cigarette and he was hooked again. 'I wanted to give up because I had started to wheeze a lot in the mornings. It got so bad I couldn't play football any more.' It was an ad in the back of the Match Programme at an Ipswich Town game that got him thinking he could quit for good. 'It was for a special stop smoking sessions at the football ground and I just thought that's for me'. 'It was somewhere I could go every week and prove I could give up smoking. Andy who runs the group is very supportive and the group is just so friendly. You feel the other blokes understand the problems you are going through. 'They do this CO monitoring where they can test how much carbon monoxide is in your lungs. When I saw the machine go red that was the kick up the backside I really needed!' 'I'm so pleased I have finally quit. The wheezing has

6

www.flyeronline.co.uk

completely stopped and I have never felt tempted to start smoking again even when I go for a beer after work!' Like Andrew many people quit for health reasons but there are lots of good reasons to quit for the festive season. Here are just five: Save money. If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day quitting just two weeks before Christmas will save you a staggering ÂŁ77. Just think what you could buy your loved ones with that sort of money? Everything smells and tastes better. Within just two days of quitting your sense of smell and taste will improve as all those nasty chemicals leave the body. Just think how much better your Christmas dinner will taste once you quit! Keep warm! It's now no longer legal to smoke in public spaces so no more standing around in the cold getting frostbitten fingers! More kisses under the mistletoe! No more smoky smelling clothing and hair and fresher breath. So this Christmas look forward to more gifts, tastier Christmas roasts, lots more kisses and smiles all round! Have a great Christmas.

Mid Suffolk District Council News Mid Suffolk District Council launches second annual energy survey On an annual basis the Department of Energy and Climate Change asks councils to carry out a survey of energy efficiency in their area. For the second year running, Mid Suffolk District Council is participating in this survey project with 35 other councils across the Eastern Region, supported by Carbon Action Network - Eastern (CAN-E). The results of the survey will be used not only to map the incidence of fuel poverty in the area, to measure progress from the previous year, but also to offer specific energy advice to householders. Julia Blackwell, chair of CAN-E says, 'Anybody returning a fully completed energy survey form will be entered into a draw to win one of four ÂŁ300 cash prizes. One of the benefits of a large partnership is that we are able to provide a really worthwhile prize for the prize draw at a small cost to the Council.' We plan to deliver the prizes to the winners in the lead-up to Christmas, helping make a very merry Christmas for four lucky families in the Eastern Region. Councillor Roy Barker, Portfolio Holder for Environment adds: 'Annually the Council makes returns to central government and these figures are used to show how well we are doing as a council against central government targets. It is important

www.flyeronline.co.uk

that we carry out this survey and we ask all householders, no matter whether you live in your own property or rent from someone else to complete the form that you will be receiving over the next few days.' The survey package also contains a section that allows anyone returning a form who qualifies for the national government grant scheme for energy efficiency to be passed to Warm Front for them to carry out a free survey and benefits check for any householder. Warm Front local co-ordinator Gale Marriott confirms, 'we will follow up on all people who are able to take advantage of a Warm Front grant and ask if we may carry out a free survey and benefits check on their behalf: this service is offered in association with the Council. Any owner occupier or privately rented householder may be able to receive a grant up to ÂŁ3,500 - and up to ÂŁ6,000 if they are off the mains gas network - towards the cost of energy efficiency works.' There will also be an opportunity for anyone completing a form to find out more about how they may have their homes insulated at low cost or in some cases with grant aid by completing a section asking for more information about Eastern CRI, a region-wide initiative developed by CAN-E for all the councils in the region A random sample of households has been selected this year to receive this survey, so lookout for your pack coming through the door in the next few days. If you wish to participate in the survey but do not receive a package, please come along to the Council Offices where they will be pleased to provide one.

Reserves To Visit - Hopton Fen This is a gem of a site for the fen enthusiast. The waterlogged peat allows unique plants and animals to flourish. Bristling stands of saw sedge, reed and rushes dominate with scatterings of rare plants such Hopton Fen as black bog rush, southern, marsh fragrant and early marsh orchid, adder's tongue fern, twayblade and bogbean. Hemp agrimony and the azure blue Devil's-bit scabious flower later in the season. Mowing and grazing prevent the fen from being engulfed by woodland and create perfect conditions for the fen plants to thrive. In spring you will be welcomed by a riot of birdsong including the melody of breeding nightingale. The fen is full of sedge and reed warbler in summer and woodpecker use the older trees throughout the year. The programme for 2010 is nearing completion and will be ready by mid November.
