Local Business News Budget 2010 Stamp Duty Probably the most commented item in the Chancellor's last budget before the election was the measure giving stamp duty relief to first time buyers who will be exempt from paying the 1% stamp duty on properties up to £250,000 - a maximum saving of £2,500- for the next two years. To qualify as a first time buyer HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have stated that the buyer (or all buyers in the case of a joint purchase) must not at any time owned a property anywhere in the world. The property must also be the buyer's main or only home thereby excluding buy-to-let investors. In addition individuals who have previously been gifted or inherited a property cannot be considered first time buyers and are therefore also excluded from the relief. Commentators are of the opinion the relief is hard to police as the onus is on the buyer to declare that they have not previously owned property. HMRC will issue penalties for a false declarations.

Local News Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society Stowmarket Operatic & Dramatic Society is pleased to announce that - like the Phoenix rising from the ashes - Mr Cinders is about to light up the Regal stage at last and "Spread a Little Happiness" across the area.

Stonham Barns Garden Centre Update

Originally cast last July, planned for December, postponed due to the arson attack on the theatre and partially recast not once but three times when first one of the brothers then the male lead had to be recast due to family commitments and one of the replacements had to leave due to revised work conditions, the current cast plus choreographer Keely Taylor and Musical Director Kate Jewell have worked extremely hard under the direction of Anne Lilley to keep the show on the road. As can be guessed from the title the story is a role reversal of the original Cinderella where the adopted son Jim (Matt Bendall - in the third part he has learned) is put upon by his Aunt, Lady Agatha Lancaster (Pauline Taylor) and her two foppish sons, Lumley (Michael Jewell) and Guy (Jon Wray the second part he had learned). His Uncle, Sir George just wants a quiet life!

A warm and friendly welcome awaits you at The Garden Centre, Stonham Barns where you can browse around the outside shrub and Perennial beds before entering the extensive under cover sales area. You will find a large selection of seasonal basket and bedding plants, potted plants, citrus and unusual conservatory specimens, a range of containers, garden tools and much more. We now have a new Conservatory shop with a beautiful range of silk flower and vase arrangements, a real treat.

A series of adventures, mishaps and misunderstandings follow We also have a "Countryfeeds" section which includes a but in the end all three young men get their girls, Jill (Jo comprehensive range of Animal feed and bedding for Birds Chadwick), Minerva (Karen Long) and Phyllis (Lynda Phillips) to Hamsters to Horses. Mid Suffolk Link Chernobyl Childrens Lifeline Mid Suffolk Link Time passes so quickly it is hard to believe that the Charity Shop in the High Street has now been open for more than a year! The Easter Bunny Chocolate Bingo held on March 13th was once again a great success. Many thanks to all who came and supported us. We raised just over ÂŁ1500 at this event which is a great addition to our much needed funds. We will be holding another Bingo evening later this year with a different theme so watch out for our notices in this Newsletter. On 18th May Bramford Golf Club are holding a fund raising event for us. In the evening they will be holding an auction of sporting memorabilia to help raise funds. If anyone has anything they could donate for the auction it would really be appreciated. We are constantly amazed at the quality and diversity of the donations that we receive in our Charity shop. As a children's Charity we are particularly pleased at the large selection of children's toys and clothes we are able to offer. Whatever you are looking for whether it is a book, a piece of jewellery, an old 78 or even a brand new evening dress it always pays to drop in and see us as our stock changes on a daily basis. As the visit of the children approaches again this year we are once more appealing for donations of clothes and toys. These children really do arrive with nothing except the clothes they travel in so if anyone has anything that they could donate to these children 21 girls and 3 boys, all aged 8 , we would be very grateful. Summer and Winter clothes are appreciated as although they visit us in the summer they return home to winters that often are as cold as minus 30 ! Donations can be dropped at the Charity Shop in Needham Market High Street (please state they are for the children) or call me on 01449 760343 if you need to arrange a collection. Thank you to all who support us. Elizabeth Parker - Link Chair

Town 102 music review Single Review Diana Vickers - Once (Out 19th April) I don't know about you, but I find it really quite difficult keeping up with the reality TV conveyor belt. Several times a year, the small screen make stars out of ordinary people who think they can sing, only for them to be dumped into the pit of rejection several weeks later. Very few manage to clamber out and carve a career out of it. Diana Vickers is the latest X Factor starlet who's trying to make a go of it - she made the semi-finals in the same series that gave us Alexandra Burke and JLS. Her debut single 'Once' is written by the multi award-winning and amusingly-named Eg White, a partnership that I think will give her a great chance of overshadowing her better-known rivals. 'Once' is very much unlike anything in the charts at the moment - her trademark breathy

12

www.stowmarketflyer.co.uk

vocals, which epitomised her performances on the X Factor (along with her bare feet), infuse with the poppy-electro verses and a rocked-up chorus, forming something that sounds refreshing, yet oddly familiar. While the beeping noise at the start may sound like a lift door is going to close in front of you, the subject matter - "I'm only gonna let you die once" - alludes to the possibility that this might instead represent a life support machine. This chorus line is also annoyingly catchy - you'll be humming it for days after hearing it just a couple of days. She'll be performing at The Waterfront Norwich on 16th May, two weeks after the release of her debut album 'Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree'. If 'Once' is a sign of things to come, then I can't wait for more. By Town 102 Breakfast Club presenter - Jeremy Durrant

Other singles out soon: Paolo Nutini - Candy (19th April) Follow-up to the Scottish crooner's ska-ridden '10/10'. Natalie Imbruglia - Scars (26th April) The former Neighbours star returns with a new album in May. Lee Ryan - Secret Love (3rd May) Former Blue heart-throb, and a change in direction with the release of a dance single. Gorillaz - Superfast Jellyfish (10th May) The cartoon band's second single from acclaimed album 'Plastic Beach'. Katie Melua - The Flood (17th May) She'll be performing at Thetford Forest this summer.

Royal Visit To Stowmarket Club The CAMEO (Come And Meet Each Other) club at The Salvation Army in Stowmarket recently had a visit by Mark Royal, the number 3 in the World Indoor Bowls Player. The club, formed as a Community Project by Lieutenant Colonel Anita Croucher and a team of helpers, is now in its very successful fourth year. Carpet bowls is one of the very www.stowmarketflyer.co.uk

popular pursuits of some of its 70 or so members who were happy to donate over this period to buy a new carpet. From the commencement the club were able to buy a second hand carpet and bowls, and soon purchased another when bowling became so popular. Mark Royal, the owner of the local Bowls shop was happy to deliver the new mat and to bowl the first bowl before the members eagerly tried it out for themselves. Whilst bowling is very popular, many of the members enjoy challenging each other to scrabble and other table top games. Under the guidance of Georgina Turner some members prefer to explore various mediums of art, as well as occasionally doing other crafts.

Enjoy a wheely fun event! Enthusiastic supporters of disability charity Optua will be pedalling for pounds in a great cycling event in May. The 'Wheely Fun' cycling event is being held for the first time on Sunday 23rd May and is a fun cycle through the quiet roads, lanes and cycle paths from Hill View in Claydon to Red Gables in Stowmarket and back - a round trip of 18 miles. People can also start from Stowmarket and do the reverse route or turn round halfway at Alder Carr Farm if they wish to do a shorter route. The route generally follows the Sustrans Route 51 Cycle Route. This will be a great opportunity to have a fun family day out, get fit, raise money and discover the lovely Mid Suffolk countryside. At just ÂŁ10 entry for up to a family of four to enter, the event also provides a great opportunity for people to raise even more money through being sponsored to take part. Colin Poole, Optua's Chief Executive said: "We're hoping to get as many people as possible to take part in this event. Families can sign up to cycle together and make a day of it, or groups of cyclists might want to be competitive and see how fast it can be done! We're hoping everyone will enjoy cycling through the Suffolk countryside whilst raising money to help run our key services for local disabled people." Optua has also recently signed up to the Government's cycle-to-work bike scheme to encourage staff to be healthy and green too. Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Sport are also supporting the event with information stands about cycling and helping promote cycling safety messages - something which Optua's community brain injury services very much support. Anyone interested in taking part can call Optua on 01473 836777 or go to www.optua.org.uk/cycling_event.asp for more information. If you would like a day out but don't cycle, come along as a volunteer to help as a marshall.
