his edition will see us have 4 bank holidays. With some luck they will all be hot and sunny (i think we’ll need more than some luck), with all these hoildays how is the UK economy going to cope, is the UK going to ground to a holt, for in one week a working person will have more day off work than at work. on the flip side there will be lots to do and plenty to see, a few such events are the Mendlesham Fair and May Day as The Museum of East Anglian Life, for more on whats happening over the bank holidays please see our Whats on Guide towards the back of the Magazine. Once again the Flyer expands this time to 20 pages, we never seem to be able to stand still, here time trundles on and we need to keep adapting to changes in business and our local surrounding, much like Stowmarket itself does. This year will see the closure of Hopgoods, a new supermarket opening (Morrisions) a Wetherspoons Pub, the John Peel Center and of course many many new homes (about 10 a month). We will keep you posted on all of the above.

Mike Norris & Wendy Marchent Reporting Back 6th April

Horoscopes

ANAEROBIC DIGESTION Most people say “What’s that?” Well it is creating energy from organic matter, like food waste, or sewerage waste. Wendy attended a Conference at Newmarket organised by Suffolk County Council on behalf of the East of England. With the price of petrol going up, and the dangers of nuclear power as demonstrated by the disaster in Japan we need to think of alternative ways of producing energy. Several practical examples were given of where this has happened. Staples Vegetables, Boston, Lincolnshire, grow vegetables and supply them on a large scale to supermarkets – they have used the off cuts from vegetables, and also excess vegetables which in the past would have just been ploughed back into the land, to create enough energy to cool their large vegetable sorting warehouse and also to heat their offices. On a smaller scale we were shown examples in India where domestic waste has created enough gas to fuel a gas ring; or fill something which looked like an inflatable mattress to take to market to sell the gas. We need to think how we can put our food waste, and sewerage waste, to good use, rather than just sending it to land fill, or disposing of it in other ways. The Rt. Hon. John Gummer, Lord Deben, was one of the speakers. MID SUFFOLK GRANTS Wendy called in to a very well attended Seminar organised by Mid Suffolk’s Community Development Officer, at Needham Market Community Centre, explaining to local voluntary groups where they might obtain grants for their particular organisation. For more information contact; Tom.Barker@midsuffolk.gov.uk Grants in the Needham Market area, to help voluntary groups, businesses, and young people have included: Needham Market Cricket Club, Needham Market Town Council for an information board to be erected at Needham Lake to encourage visitors to come into the town and support local businesses, Needham Market Society, together with Needham Market & Barking Charities for a Historical Information Board at the Camping Land near to Needham Lake, to encourage visitors and tourism, lastly a grant to help young people with support for Igneous the Youth Activity Centre at the Lion Barn Industrial Estate, Needham Market. 2012 OLYMPICS There will be special trains from Ipswich which will go right into the Olympic Stadium at Stratford, London, and take just over an hour to get there. The Olympic website is now up and running if you want to buy any tickets. Wendy attended a presentation about this in Mid Suffolk offices, given by Adam Baker from Suffolk County Council. The Olympic team from Rwanda will be based at Bury St. Edmunds; the Canadian team Lowestoft, and the Azerbaijan & Brazilian team Ipswich. The Olympic Canoeing event will be at White Water, Hertfordshire, and the Mountain Bike event at Hadleigh, Essex. So the local area is being involved in the 2012 Olympics. Budget 2011 Target Accounants

George Osborne recently delivered his second budget which included limited but welcome good news such as the increase in personal allowance and a reduction in fuel duty.

Personal allowances

Personal allowance will increase to £7,475 from April 2011 and from 6 April 2012 the personal allowance will rise to £8105 (Although inflation will eroded any real benefit of the rise).

Small business summary

The Chancellor put forward various measures for business across a wide number of issues. • Entrepreneurs’’ Relief l lifetime limit doubles from 6 April 2011 to £10 million. • Corporation tax on small businesses, those with profits of less than £300,000 will pay corporation tax at 20% • Capital allowances – the changes to the rates proposed in June 2010 remain unaltered and from April 2012 the Annual Investment Allowance will be reduced to £25,000 and that the rates of writing down allowance on man pool assets will reduce from 20% to 10%. • Business Rates – small business rate relief scheme has been extended for an additional

year to 30 September 2011. The scheme provides eligible small business ratepayers with small business rate relief at 100 per cent on properties up to £6,000 rateable value in 2010, (rather than the previous rate of 50 per cent), and a tapering relief from 100 per cent to 0 per cent for properties up to £12,000 in rateable value. • Business motoring in privately owned car – the amount an employee can be reimbursed tax free for business journeys has increased from 40p to 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles, the rate of 25p per mile for mileage in excess of 10,000 remains the same.

VAT

The VAT thresholds for both registering and deregistering have increased from 1 April 2011 to £73,000 and £71,000 respectively. HMRC Time to pay scheme remains HMRC has confirmed through the Budget announcements that the time to pay scheme will remain available and that the Business Payment Support Service will remain in place to advise viable businesses experiencing temporary financial difficulty. As with all Budgets the devil is in the detail, so careful planning of your personal and business finances is more important than ever. If you feel that you need professional advice on any issues raised or on accountancy or taxation matters in general please contact us for a free initial consultation on 01449 798444 or via email info@targetaccounts.co.uk.

Digital Switch Over

Needham Market Ariels

Digital Switch Over (DSO) will commence on July 4th and will be complete on July 20th. This will affect approx 75% of Mid Suffolk residents that are currently relying on an aerial for TV reception. Simon Little of Needham Market Aerials Ltd. has been nominated as a Local Authority, Technical Advisor to assist with the transition from analogue to digital reception. It Simon’s advice to prepare now as it has been proved that after switchover in other areas of the UK, there has been a shortage of Freeview set top boxes which are currently commonly available at approx. £25-£35.00. The first stage of DSO will be on July 4th when analogue BBC2 switches off forever. You will subsequently also notice that the normal channel line-up of analogue channels 1-5 will become mixed up and may cause some confusion. After DSO the signal strength and quality of many Freeview digital channels will increase dramatically and channels such as ITV1and ITV2 will work far more reliably than you may currently be used to. If you require more advice to arrange for a digital compatible aerial upgrade then contact Needham Market Aerials Ltd (01449 721100) and quote “Stowmarket Flyer” for a specially negotiated discounted quotation.

Additional Needs Disco “Wednesday Night Disco Night” at Xcel nightclub was set up for people with additional needs, and if required their support workers. It runs every 2nd Wednesday of every month. The club offers a real night out in a real club. Kelly, Xcel’s Manager said that it is all about giving people the opportunity to meet up with friends, make new friends and build up the confidence to access the community independently. We are able to give people this opportunity and it is all about Xcel giving something back to the community.

like-minded friends at a venue in our local town. He’s also delighted to meet up with old friends, some of whom he hasn’t seen for a long time. It also offers a break to family carers. From a parents’ point of view, Mrs. Watts said that they are pleased that the venue is only a relatively short distance away; “it means less traveling time – and the car park right outside Xcel is very convenient for dropping off – and maximizes the time off we have from our caring role!”

their new Sunday and Bank Holiday bus service between Stowmarket and Ipswich. In the face of severe reductions in the funding of public transport throughout the county, the current Sunday services will cease at the end of March.

“The venue isn’t too large and has a welcoming atmosphere, and we’re happy in the knowledge that people are on hand to keep an eye on things.”

Each month the night has a theme, from the Christmas Party theme, Valentines, to Karaoke last month. The next night on the 13th April will be themed in the 70’s, so people have the opportunity to dress up if they like, but the music will be the best of Abba, Meatloaf, Michael Jackson and many more. Like always there is a chance to put in requests too.

“The experience is really good for our son too; it gives him some independence and enables him to experience a good night out with people of his own age in a real disco environment.”

Robert, who attends Xcel, said that the Karaoke night on the 9th March was his favourite event at Xcel so far. He loves to dance and tries hard to be ready to get to Xcel by 7pm – and stay as long as possible! Having ‘additional needs’ meant that he attended school and college some 12-15 miles away, so he’s really pleased to have the opportunity to meet up with

Stowmarket Art Club Annual Exhibition 2011

Stowmarket Art Club are busy organising their 51st Annual Exhibition which takes place at the United Reformed Church at the end of May. The event this year will display around 250 paintings by club members and as the exhibition is non profit making, the paintings are priced fairly with no need for profit mark-up. This represents an excellent opportunity to purchase paintings by local artists, at very favourable prices. With an ever increasing attendance at the exhibition

and consequent increase in sales, an early visit is recommended. Even if you do not want to buy a painting, there is sure to be plenty for you to appreciate and admire. Admittance is free. An added attraction this year will be a mock-up of an artist’s studio, to give visitors an impression of how the great artists of history might have worked. Who knows, it could turn out to be Stowmarket’s entry for the Turner Prize this year. The Annual Exhibition of Stowmarket Art Club will take place from Tuesday May 24th until Saturday May 28th 2011. There will be a Private View on Monday May 23rd at 7.30. A few free tickets to the private view are available to discerning buyers of paintings. Contact Dennis Copping 01449 612970

Salters’ Festival of Chemistry, 23rd March

At The University of Cambridge, 23rd March, Alexa Holder, Lauren Gissing, Josh Chaloner and Daniel Woodward represented Stowmarket Middle School in the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry. After a short journey by train from Stowmarket to The University of Cambridge, the students were introduced to their first chemistry challenge. There had been a murder! Five suspects had been apprehended by police and the challenge was to identify the culprit. A sample of a mysterious powder found at the crime scene was tested against a sample from each of the five suspects. The students used their knowledge of the colour of metals when placed into a Bunsen burner

flame and the reactions of the these powders with nitric acid, silver nitrate and barium nitrate to distinguish between the powders and successfully identify the culprit. The second challenge was to identify the amount of iron in a range of vitamin pills. This was an advanced procedure and involved the use of a spectrometer. The students had to prepare a known solution and compare this to solutions of vitamin pills to determine the concentration of iron using the spectrometer!

Question:

Would you like to see a Headteacher suffer pain, lots of pain? If your answer is yes, then read on…. You’re in luck! I am the Headteacher of Combs Ford Primary School in Stowmarket and I am running in the 2011 London Marathon for simple reasons -

A enthralling day came to a loud and explosive conclusion as the students witnessed a lecture by Dr Peter Wothers ‘The Wothers guide to the periodic table – Group 1, the alkali metals’.

We have a very brave little girl called Aimee in our school who has Leukaemia. I feel this is a good way to help the charity that supports her and her family, along with many other hundreds of families!

In this demonstration-packed lecture Dr Wothers explored the reactions of these most reactive elements and answered the questions:

What would our streets be like if sodium was replaced by rubidium?

How does lithium power our world and clear our minds? See the liquid gold of caesium. A fantastic day was had by all.

To donate online please visit: www. virginmoneygiving. com/russellclark (don’t forget to tick the ‘gift aid’ box!)

I had a free day in my diary for 17th April 2011!

How is hydrogen related to this family of metals?

How much ‘deader’ could the Dead Sea get?

Please donate what you can in the box the more we raise, the more families the charity can help - THANK YOU!

Film Review &

he Adjustment Bureau stars Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. This film is loosely based on a short story by Phillip K Dick called the Adjustment Team. The Adjustment Bureau is a Romantic Science fiction thriller genre of films which I feel can appeal to all. Now most people would talk about Matt Damon first as he is the ‘Star’ of the film but I feel that Emily Blunt as Elise possibly stole this title as her performance was brilliant. I wanted to live her life of spontaneity and free living. Blunt pulls off the role of Contemporary Ballet Dancer and makes it believable. Matt Damon plays the role of David Norris; New York’s bad boy of politics, trying to get to senate. Norris meets Elise in a hotel toilet when practising his speech and his world is turned upside down. Elise encourages him to be honest and he goes completely off script. Enter the Adjustment Bureau. These are a team of people who are there to guide you on the right path and they will stop at nothing to make sure you stay on that path. This is where the film begins to fall in the science fiction genre of the film and also takes the comparisons to Christopher Nolan’s smash hit ‘Inception’. The Bureau can step through doors to aid their adjustments to your path so they can

The Adjustment Bureau (12A) – George Nolfi - CLAIRE JEFFERYS

Whether you like a love story or a bit of science fiction! The Adjustment Bureau is a clever mix of both genre’s. go from being on the Statue of Liberty to the New York Yankees Stadium with the turn of a door knob. David’s path is confused when the Bureau’s team member that is meant to be steering him on the correct path falls asleep and misses the ‘kick’. David meets Elise for a second time on the bus and gets her number. This causes the Bureau to kidnap David for use of a better word, to explain how his path is written and that he was only meant to see Elise once and they destroy the number. We now enter the romantic science fiction thriller part as we have the love story along with all the science fiction kicks and effects, the Fight for love that plays out with all its typical Hollywood twist and turns. I don’t use typical in the sense of; oh god here we go again as I didn’t feel that at all. I just mean that yes it is Boy meets girl, Boy looses girl, Boy finds girl, Girl is mad at boy etc etc but it’s is done very well not a teenage love story. You will them to go against the Bureau and prove their love is the plan and not what the ‘Chairman’ (the

films version of God) has written. I really enjoyed The Adjustment Bureau and as I said at the beginning the outstanding performance of the film for me was Emily Blunt but then I have always liked anything that Emily Blunt is in and I hope this film gives her the roles she deserves as an actress. If you like a Good-Old fashioned love story then this film is for you. If you like Science Fiction films with questions to be asked then again this film is for you. Also I must mention Terence Stamp as Thompson the Top Agent for the Bureau and Anthony Mackie as Harry Mitchell the agent sent to watch Norris. Both play their roles very well, Stamp is smooth and quite eerie as well where Mackie is laid back and willing to help. Coming Soon! Hop starring Russell Brand. An Easter film about a young rabbit EB who runs away to Hollywood to pursue his dreams of stardom. Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Gyllenhaal plays a pilot whose is sent on a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago Train.

Stowmarket Town’s cup dream snuffed out

Ridgeons League Cup, semi-final Stowmarket Town 2 Wisbech Town 6 For almost an hour Town’s dream of reaching their first League Cup final since 1965 was very much alive. The hosts more than matched Premier Division visitors Wisbech and led twice but a late flurry of goals killed off their hopes in cruel fashion. Marc Wake put Stowmarket ahead after just 90

seconds, reacting first to Nathan Birch’s knockdown from Lee Drummond’s corner. Callum Reed levelled for the Fenmen after 27 minutes with their first meaningful attack but a foul on James Graham allowed Wayne Proctor to put Stow back in front from the penalty spot after 40 minutes. Wisbech had a goal disallowed before they equalised through Andy Furnell after 57 minutes. The sides were still level with less than halfan-hour to go until Reed took centre stage. He struck from the spot after 65 minutes to make it 3-2 and added two more in the closing stages to take his tally to four after substitute Darren Jimson had made it 4-2 in the 78th minute.

Volleyball: Stowmarket ready for final

The indoor volleyball season is building to a climax with Suffolk Volleyball Association’s Finals Day approaching. In the Cup final, Stowmarket will take on Newmarket, having both overcome Ipswich Moles twice earlier in the season and after beating each other once each in close games, the matches going to five sets on both occasions. This year, the top two teams from the Suffolk Indoor Series of tournaments have qualified for the Plate final. Having won all of the qualifying tournaments, Ipswich Meercats will be clear

favourites, with Ipswich 2 looking to cause an upset, having finished the series on equal points with Stow Stingers. Ipswich 2 qualified for the final due to beating Stingers when the two teams played in the final tournament. Finals day will be held on Saturday, May 2, at Suffolk New College Sports Hall in Ipswich (next to the Goals Soccer Centre complex). The day will begin with the first serve of the Plate final at 12.30pm. Following this, the Cup final will start at 2.30pm (warm-ups commence half an hour earlier). Following the tournament, presentations will be held at The Grinning Rat, to crown the new Suffolk Cup and Plate winners, where a buffet will be available for players, officials and guests. Everyone is welcome to come along and support Suffolk Volleyball Association’s end of season event.

Rugby: Stowmarket confirm title in style

Stowmarket RUFC confirmed the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties One title in scintillating style today. While they were romping to a 62-5 victory at Thurston, nearest challengers West Norfolk were suffering a shock 13-7 defeat at home to Holt. The results leave Stowmarket 13 points clear with one game to go.

Readers Letters

April - May

Readers Letters I’m writing with concern at the speed of traffic along Needham Road, Combs Ford and the rubbish and general state of the park adjacent, in particular along the stream/river that runs through it. You may be aware that there is a children’s play area located very close to the road. Residents, both adults and children alike make good use of the park and it is always busy. As such, this park is an asset for residents of Stowmarket and the Council should be able to have pride in having a well maintained park. However, the park I refer to is in dire need of attention. Albeit the grass is regularly cut and tidy there are a number of areas for improvement. At the moment, some of the walkways are lethal. The raised wooden foot path which runs alongside the river is slippery and without banisters, much of it is rotten and large parts of it are completely missing creating a major hazard. Rusty nails protrude from where the wood has broken away from its fixing. Likewise, fencing is rather dilapidated to the perimeter. Rubbish is strewn along the banks of the river and in it and makes it very unsightly as well as a health issue for people and wildlife. It is terrible that a few will leave a place in such a mess and I try to pick up as much as I can when walking but it really needs a major overhaul. “Perhaps community service could be put to good work in such areas to minimise cost? “ There is also great need for traffic calming along the road as it seems to be used at all hours as a race track with the speed limit blatantly ignored. Inward investment to an area is reliant on the profile and popularity of a town. Stowmarket currently has a very bleak high street and the surrounding areas of the town looking rather tired and unkempt. In order to reverse the decline, the Council would do well to speculate to accumulate by tidying up the area and restoring pride and beauty to the town and its surrounds and campaigning to encourage residents to do likewise. A place needs to look upmarket for business to consider it so and worth relocating for. Some work has been done along Gipping Way with tree/shrub planting to the sides of the road but much more planting of trees throughout the town would be beneficial - the approach roads from A1120 to mask the heavy industrial units and roundabouts etc. Again, to minimise cost could local business contribute? More and more housing is going up but most of us travel elsewhere for shopping as there is a lack within the town and as said, it is hardly inspiring. A campaign to pretty up Stowmarket, get people involved in a tidy up of parks and recreation areas and just to be aware of littering etc would be welcome.

How can we raise awareness and create a positive campaign for change?
