Platinum Plans – Next year’s Jubilee As you’ll all be aware, the Queen has designated next year for special celebrations to mark her seventy years as monarch. There will be a four day bank holiday, from June 2nd to June 5th, with national celebrations, but the entire year will be marked by celebratory events around the country.

Stourton Caundle has always embraced Jubilees, and this unique one will be no exception. How do we wish to mark it? The national festivities include a “Big Lunch” on June 5th, which looks to be an appealing option. There will be beacons lit across the British Isles on June 2nd – should we have one, and if so, where?. There are lots of options that we could consider, but we need to decide what suits us best, so the Events committee will host a meeting of interested parties to discuss and decide on a format for our village, and to kick off the detailed planning for the celebration of this most exceptional event in our nation’s history.

Whatever your ideas, get in touch on 362890 and look out for a meeting date in a few weeks’ time – the date will be on the village website and posters around the village.

NATURALLY THINKING

By Margaret Waddingham After drifting along with the clouds for most of August, we suddenly found ourselves trying to find some cool, shady spot for three whole days just when the schools returned, and then, just as abruptly, we were again under cloud canopy. At least these clouds produced some welcome rain otherwise we would all have been crying ‘drought, drought’. It has been recognised as a wet summer so I wonder why it is that the water table seems so low. Surely, in days gone by gardens didn’t flag and fields didn’t crack so quickly after a wet season? I suppose it’s all due to climate change.

Down Rowden Mill lane, I’ve been watching the hogweeds because they remind me so much of the moor when we lived in Hatherleigh. I had at that time become particularly interested in why different insects seemed to prefer different parts of the plant and so I searched back through my notes of the time to compare them with what I saw now. Sure enough, in August 1991, I had recorded how one hogweed plant had played host to a variety of insects and which particular bits they were interested in. On the top of the flower head there were half a dozen yellowish red soldier beetles and two little yellow striped hoverflies that hovered on or just above it. Below that were several elongated beetles with scarlet wings and a black head, later identified as click beetles, and below that was a very large web stretching from one of its leaves to a nearby gorse bush. At the very base were three small black slugs. I was intrigued by the part that the hogweed was playing in the lives of all these little insects. The soldier beetles are carnivorous so presumably they were snapping up all those harmful little bugs that might drop by and eat the flower. The hover flies feed on aphids amongst other things, so presumably they caught anything that the soldier beetles missed and, in addition, pollinated the flowers. The click beetles enjoy a good feed on rotting vegetation so they help to keep the plant tidy, whilst the spider grabs anything else that is foolish enough to fly too close.

Little black slugs are omnivores and I suppose eat anything left over by the others. Their menu can include fungi, little earthworms, rotting vegetation, dead plant material and dung, in other words, they would protect the plant from quite a lot near its root. With all those sentinels protecting it, it’s small wonder that the hogweed is one of the successes of the plant world. It still doesn’t explain why each seemed to keep to one particular territory

though. Down Rowden Mill Lane, I did see a couple of soldier beetles on the top of one, together with some large flies and a few bees round several but if any had that same army looking after them, I missed them.

I have been entertained by the families that gather round the bird feeders. As soon as the querulous adult goldfinches flock in, their offspring arrive too, usually sitting on top of the feeders looking pathetic and hoping their parents will remember that they are still not able to work out how to cling to the feeders. They never do. Fair enough, they have to learn how to fend for themselves and ignoring them is the probably a bird’s best way to do it. After a while, the youngsters, their backs well coloured in their goldfinch livery but their fronts still fledgling pale, line up under the feeders gathering up what falls down. This is the signal for other families of ground feeders to join them - chaffinches, sparrows and the occasional young robin, not yet red waist-coated. The tit families are much kinder to their youngsters. They seem to feed them until they can hang on upside down themselves.

There are still some late nesting house martins under my gutters that haven’t yet managed to coax their offspring away from their nests, though every morning I see bigger and bigger numbers of them circling round, feeding on the insects that will help sustain them on their journey to the warmer climes of Africa. The swifts, of course, being the first to arrive, were first to leave and did so long ago leaving the church tower strangely silent.

Welcome Club At our first meeting for over 18 months, 28 members attended on 15th September. It was a somewhat different format with many topics to discus after this long recess.

We were all in agreement for a Christmas Bazaar to take place on November 20th, and also for a Christmas meal in December, I hope we can get something booked up. We had a small quiz before our refreshments.

I have to say everyone seemed to be in high spirits which gave to a very pleasant afternoon. Thank you all for coming.

Stourton Caundle village website 2.0 An invitation Our village website first took form in January 2010 with Gerry Holdstock as the main webmaster supported by a small group namely the writer, Tim Villiers, Margaret McKay and Caroline Chappell. The technology at that time required maintaining the content on a home computer and largely one person uploading revised pages and new files using dedicated software that resided on their PC. Gerry did an excellent job as webmaster and now that he is no longer with us, he is greatly missed.

Technology has moved on a lot since those early days and new types of Content Management System (CMS) have appeared where all of the files are stored on external servers along with the editing software. We also have smartphones that can operate rather like a computer. It is therefore timely that we revamp the way our website operates by switching to a new CMS, such as WordPress, so that more people can be involved in creating and uploading content.

Also, we now have social media such as FaceBook, Instagram, YouTube, etc. and nowadays it is easy to link across from a website to these media making our website more accessible from smartphones, etc.

Readers are invited to get involved in a newly-formed group, the initial task of which is to transfer the content of our current site over to a new one, as well as create webpages on new topics. It is envisaged that many different people will get involved, some representing village organisations, submitting content to the various pages that will constitute our new village website. We have already had an offer to transfer the site to WordPress from Andrew Sampson and Chris Crowstaff of Vale Designs based at Lydlinch Common.

A BLACKBERRY TRILOGY

to the old stone cross where it leans in the grass, up a track of red mud where late flowers still bud and banks are house-tall with bracken filled walls.

Take your time past each gate.

Hear the wind give a sigh from a gossamer sky, see the path start to wind like a thread left behind,

watch a butterfly skid on a shining rose hip.

Take your time as you pick.

Move the thistledown heads for the richest and best, watch the flies, jewel-bright in the soft autumn light, and as each bush is spent, savour the scent -

take your time.

2. Making the Jam Wash the fruit, then set the pan upon the heat to make the jam.

Pour on water, simmer low - just enough to make the juices flow.

Add the sugar, stir it well, pause to sniff that sweetest, summer smell.

Heat the jars and drip some shining drops upon a plate to know the time to stop.

Bottle, cap and label, then, energy all spent, squirrel them in cupboards then sit back and rest content.

3. The Store Cupboard This time of year the cupboard for my stores is neat and trim with white lined shelves to keep my jams and pickles in.

All neatly labelled, tightly capped and topped Come see my harvest, best of summer’s crops!

This time of year the cupboard for my stores is bulging with delights, each gleaming jar is hidden out of sight.

But when the winter winds blow chill and cold, I’ll raid my rows of treasures and bring back summer’s gold.

Garden Tips for October/November Looking out on my garden as I write this in mid-September, it’s good to see I have enough plants (in the front, anyway) that are coping with the very dry conditions. So far this month we’ve had a few spots of rain and not a lot of sun. It’s hard to believe we had so much rain earlier on and a lot of growth as a result, which all needs water! This is why we need to grow a wide variety of plants so that whatever the weather we will have plants that look good.

There are a lot of jobs to be done during these months, so here’s a few; 1. Bulb planting continues. Whether in the ground or in pots, there’s a huge choice.

2. This spring I had a collection of pots containing mixed bulbs, and Somebody (those fat, over-sexed pigeons?) took great delight in pecking or biting all the new shoots as they came up. So be warned – bulbs can attract ‘Nature’! Try sticking in bits of holly. There’s a hollybush by my telegraph pole, help yourself!

3. I still feel Autumn is the best time to plant and bare root plants are available from November.

4. These months are good for starting a new compost bin, and you don’t need a big space. I grew courgettes in mine and then filled a compost bag with my own compost, stuck in canes and grew runner beans.

5. Water butts! We really need to save as much as we can.

6. It’s that time of year for raking leaves and making leaf mould.

7. Once finished flowering, climbing roses should be pruned back to frame, prune out an old stem occasionally and tie in new growth.

Shorten stems on bush roses to prevent wind rock etc.

8. You can divide Rhubarb in November. Dig out the whole root (big muscles required) and put back only the young, healthy parts.

9. Buddleias can be cut back by half when flowering is over.

10. As perennials go over, cut back and divide if needed and then treat to tons of mulch.

11. Remove dead leaves from ponds 12. If you thought a plant was in the wrong place, then be brave and move it. Take as much of the root ball as possible, prep new hole really well, lots of water, mulch, and keep an eye on it.

I am going to end on Compost because very soon peat will be banned and that will be that. Castle Gardens are trialling a huge variety of alternatives, I’m pleased to say, so I felt I must try a few myself. With so much writing on the bags it is a minefield to find out what each bag actually contains. So I purchased Lexington’s ‘Peat Free’ multipurpose with added John Innes, loam, grit and fertiliser! This, according to Mike Burk, is an alternative to using the usual John Innes 2/3 composts.

I also purchased Biochar Seed Compost with organic coconut coir and seaweed.

The third bag was The Real Soil Company’s SuperSoil – garden topsoil, natural loam and organic nutrients.

I could have bought several more! The point is that we must try the alternatives to what we are used to. I would always say have a bag of coarse grit to hand plus perlite and maybe sharp sand. Get your bare hands into the compost and feel what needs to be added. It’s very much trial and error. That reminds me – I mentioned wool based composts a month or so ago. The Seed Compost was great but the Multipurpose was not!

Ride & Stride for Dorset’s Historic Churches Many thanks to everyone who sponsored our village riders and striders on 11th September. As I write, we have raised a total of £1039, which beats last year’s record of £835. Half of this goes to Dorset Historic Churches Trust, which helps fund repairs to church buildings all over the county; the other half goes to our own St Peter’s Church Maintenance Fund. Members of the Caundle Velo Club led the way by cycling to 19 churches across the county and raising more than half the total, while slower cyclists and walkers spent the day visiting nearer churches. My thanks to all who took part.

Hazards for Hedgehogs Bonfires are dangerous, so only set light to rubbish you have moved that day.

Safest alternative is to use an incinerator.

Strimmer, Scythe or Mower. Check for hogs before you cut, using a rake. We see some horrific injuries caused by cutting tools.

Dogs. Give Hogs a warning before you release your dog of an evening.

Slug Pellets are poisonous. If absolutely necessary, pellets should be placed under a slate or in a small diameter pipe. It’s important to remove poisoned dead slugs daily and dispose of them. Ensure birds are not able to eat the corpses of poisoned slugs.

Netting. Tennis, cricket and pea netting. Ensure that they are kept off the ground so hedgehogs can pass safely underneath.

Garden Ponds, Swimming and Paddling pools. Ensure that hogs are able to climb out by way of a ramp or slight incline of stones.

Cars. Slow down after dark when driving through our village.

Hedgehog Care If you find a poorly hedgehog and you are concerned, bring it indoors and put it in a high sided large box (green glass recycling box is ideal) place newspaper on the bottom with an old towel or fleece in the corner for the hedgehog to hide under. Fill a covered hot water bottle, put it at the end of the box, ensuring the hog can move away from the heat. Ensure there is fresh water and some cat or dog food. Put the box somewhere quiet.

Garden Club Forthcoming Programme The garden club has organised a great season of talks and demonstrations for members and visitors, the details of which were contained in the last edition of The Caundler However, as a reminder, the first of these will be on Wednesday 13th October, when Sally Nex, the journalist and author, will be talking about vegetable growing and heritage varieties. The meeting will start at 7:30 and membership subscriptions will be collected at the door from those who haven’t already signed up.

Church News We are so pleased that we are back to enjoying services in St. Peter’s Church. We have a Communion Service on the second Sunday of each month and a Matins service on the fourth Sunday. Do come and join us and stay for coffee or tea and biscuits.

Flower & Produce Show After the cancellation of last year’s annual show, it was a pleasure to return to the village hall on Saturday 4th September and enjoy a touch of normality with a very well attended display of vegetables, flowers, plants and handicraft. There were more than three hundred entries overall, so enthusiasm (and the desire to win prizes) has not waned over the lockdown.

Christine Peters was a first-time winner of the Bond cup. for the lady with the highest points total.

It was good to see a number of entries in the children’s classes after some quiet years with James Tree winning the Ken Moore Watering Can.

Dayrell Bingham maintained his run of successes by again winning the Julius cup for the gentlemen’s highest points by a wide margin.

Those interested in producing winners for next year might like to note that several classes attracted no, or only one, entry this year (the trug of herbs, fruit and vegetables; the pot of curd; the dish of fruit; the miniature flower arrangement; the wood or metalwork item; the decorated flower pot; and one of the photography entries). Plenty of opportunities there! The most popular classes, with thirteen entries each, were the sweet peas and the homemade alcoholic drink; the latter perhaps indicating what we have been getting up to during lockdown (by contrast, there were only two home-made cordial entries!).

The tea party which followed allowed members and friends to enjoy some of the entries in the cake section of the show, while raising some £115 for the club by the sale of tea tickets. An auction of some of the produce shown on the day, conducted by John Waltham and Neil Gillard, raised over £130 for Julia’s House, a children’s hospice charity. Thanks as always are due to the committee and supporters for organising the event, as well as arranging and serving the tea, and to the exhibitors for making the show a success.

Stourton Caundle Golf Society Couples Day 22nd August 2021 After missing out on the Couples Day in 2020, the ladies were all very eager (?) to get back into the swing of things in 2021, and even though we had to delay a few extra months, it was worth it, and a very enjoyable day it was. The weather was with us, cloudy to start, but blossoming into a beautiful warm summer’s day. After a small mishap with the catering arrangements, instead of the usual BBQ, everyone brought a picnic, and it seemed to make the event even better. Groups were pre-determined, and with the ladies amongst friends, and supplied with some cocktails in a can for the walk round nobody was taking things too seriously. Many enjoyed a drink out on the course, and all enjoyed a laugh. It was another chance for the partners to find out just how frustrating golf can be, and for players to combine their two loves of golf and family time.

The format was set that the ladies would tee off. The shot would not count if missed, but if the ball was hit, even if it was just 1 inch, it counted. The playing partners then took over until the ball was on the green, where the ladies then took back over until the ball was in the hole. There was added balance this year with the inclusion, at least in part, of the players society handicap.

Once we were all in, the picnics were broken out and we all basked in the sunshine. Drinks were in hand, the food was done, and it was time for comments from our President, and the presentations.

Second place this year went to Alban & Helen Harris, with a nett 52 points.

Stourton Caundle and the Domesday Book – Part 1 Most everyone will have heard of the Domesday Book but where if at all is Stourton Caundle mentioned in it?

In 1085 the king, William the Conqueror, sent his agents to survey every shire in England, to list his holdings and calculate the dues owed to him. That part relating to our area is known as the Exon Domesday originally comprising 2 volumes held at Exeter. In late Anglo-Saxon times, shires were divided up into ‘Hundreds’ with local administration by way of ’courts’ – Court Barton next to Manor Farm would have been one such place. Our village lay towards the edge of Brownshall Hundred, which bordered on Sherborne Hundred. The original Hundred was based on an area of 100 hides, each hide typically covering about 120 acres. Domesday records not only who owned the land but also who the owner was prior to 1066!

Although some local places cited in Domesday have similar names to their present ones, such as Stapulbrigg for Stalbridge, and Westone for Stalbridge Weston, we have to contend with the name of ‘Candele’ or ‘Candel’ when it comes to the question of our village, which shares that name with the adjacent Caundles. http:// www.domesdaybook.co.uk/dorset.html website gives a summary for places in Dorset. Stourton Caundle was exceptional in that 6 owners are identified, whereas most Dorset place-names were associated with a single person, e.g. the Bishop of Salisbury for Stalbridge Weston. Seven distinct parts of Domesday are linked with the six:

If we consider a typical household to be 3.5 persons on average, we come up with a population for Stourton Caundle of about 160 plus the Lord of the Manor and his family who lived in Area D listed above. In the next issue of the magazine, I shall attempt to identify the seven areas in terms of their locations on the map of the parish. One clue as a starter is that the smaller mill can be equated with Rowden Mill, i.e. Area E. Richard Miles
