Hello!

We’ve been receiving more feedback from our readers each week – from notes in the mail, to emails & calls. Folks have called just to tell us how much they enjoy Rides! Magazine. It’s gratifying to know that we are gaining popularity so rapidly. The benefit is that, as we increase our readership, our advertisers are seeing better results by the week as well. They tell us that the response is getting stronger. Not bad for a magazine that’s only been on the street for just over a month! Speaking of which, we’re short-handed on the sales front. So, if you’re a dealer who may be interested in advertising, call us. You’ll be glad you did!

This is another big weekend for events throughout the region. Everyone is hoping for good weather this weekend (for a change). One great example is Rolling Thunder 2, a rolling classic car and motorcycle cruise through the Laurel Highlands. Regis tration is at 11am on Saturday at the Jerome Fire Hall in Somerset County. You’ll get a chance to meet wrestling legend, Animal of the Road Warriors. Also on Saturday, Bud Garvey’s Annual Cruis e-In is one you should check out if you’ve never been there. It’s in Stumptown (Osceola Mills). You’r e sure to see all types of cars traveling from great distances! There’s always lots of great food as well.

On Sunday, Rides! Magazine will be at the Last Cruise Invitational Car & Motorcycle Show in Downtown State College. Stroll along Allen Street and check out some of the areas coolest cars. From what I understand, there will have been some really nice ones invited. After the awards, join in the open cruise or watch from any spot you pick. There’s also a Cruisin’ Classics Concert at the State Theatre. Be sure to find us and say hello! Next week we hope to share some photos with our readers.

This week we’ve featured a really cool, era-inspired, 1969 Camaro SS meticulously restored by Matt Barczak of Northern Cambria. We discuss with Matt how the car came to be, and how he first developed his fetish for first-generation Camaros. This car has been featured in Hemmings Muscle Machines and is worth checking out!

Also in this issue: Last weekend the Dubs On The Move VW Club met in Clarion for their Annual July cruise through Cook Forest and scenic Western Penn sylvania. Knox Patton has shared a few details and some photos from the festivities.

Day Two Look B

ack in the 1970s, Pete Barczak of Northern Cambria had a green ’69 Yenko Camaro with a 12.5:1 427 under the hood, a Hurst Ram Rod shifter, Cragar S/Ss and Lakewood traction bars. Pete’s son, Matt, was bitten by the Camaro bug at a very early age.

Matt, now 35, who has been buying, selling and restoring Camaros for a number of years, decided that he wanted to do a car that was both an homage to what his dad was wheeling in the ‘70s, and yet was true to itself.

After some hunting, Matt found a genuine Super Sport originally equipped with a 395/375hp, M21 4 speed, 3.73 12-bolt with posi, deluxe interior with console and gauges, and a cowl induction hood. The car came from Ohio and had only 30,000 miles on it, and had good metal. It had been a drag car, but had never been tubbed or cut.

In the late 70s, it became an ISCA show car. Originally Rallye Green, the car was candy apple red. The numbers matching big block was long gone – replaced by a 383 stroker. So, purists can just relax!

Matt, working with his dad, yanked the quarters and installed a set of NOS GM skins, more for peace of mind than anything else. And once that was sorted, well, stripping down the rest of the car was a given – the Barczaks discovered that the floors, doors, rockers, trunk, cowl hood, all of it was factory-original, clean and reusable.

Arone Restoration took care of the bodywork and paint, which is second to none. Done in concourse style, all the original overspray was done properly in all the right places as well.

Matt lucked into just what he was looking for – a genuine four-bolt 427, a real high-performance engine rather than a warmed-up station wagon mill. “It was a complete race motor when I got it,” Matt tells us, noting that it came with a set of #840 big-block rectangle closed-port heads. But those iron heads didn’t have the flow necessary for the 10-second time slips Matt was looking for, so he swapped them out for a set of ported Dart aluminum heads with 2.30-inch intake valves instead of the relatively puny 2.19s. Retaining the factory 12.5:1 compression, taking into consideration the lighter and newly balanced-and-blueprinted reciprocating assembly, adding a cam that lets you hear every valve clang shut like hammer on anvil, adding better breathing and more fuel, and dismissing the vastly understated 430-horsepower rating the L88 had when new, Matt figures that this engine should dyno somewhere in the 675-horsepower.

Though born with an M21 four-speed backing up the

396, this car came with a Turbo 400 automatic in place when Matt bought it. A ‘68-vintage M22 four-speed, with its more straight-cut gears for durability, was duly installed behind the L88, but has recently been pulled in favor of an AutoGear M23 four-speed for dependability (after some issues at the track with the M22).The deluxe interior was refurbished, and a set of vintage-style gauges was added, but the roll cage was retained as it will likely come in handy when those 10-second time slips come to pass. Other frame-stiffening measures include a set of bolt-in subframe connectors that help to keep all of that power from twisting the unit-body up and trying to pop the windshield out at launch.

Matt is particularly proud of the Camaro’s nose-in-theweeds stance. “I don’t want to give my secrets away, but nothing is tubbed, not even mini-tubbed. And the tires fit – the wheels are 15 x 8s in back, with a 275/65 tire.

The tire doesn’t hit the frame rails or anything.” A select amount of fidgeting with the nose – less than you’d think, all things considered – contributed to the jacked-up stance. Beyond bigger tires, traction tricks amount to a set of Lakewood traction bars.

Other Camaros have come into Matt’s life in the meantime, but the parallels between this one and the one his dad once owned really tickle Matt. “He had a 12.5:1 compression 427 in his green ‘69 Camaro, and so do I (even though I didn’t know it was originally green when I bought it). He had Cragars and Lakewood traction bars installed on his car, and so do I. The Day Two theme mimics what his Yenko was back in the day. Except,” Matt stresses, “mine isn’t a Yenko.” Nor, to his credit, did he make it up to look like one.

VE DUBS THE M D ON

ubs On The Move VW Club in Clarion met for their annual July cruise through Cook Forest and scenic Western Pennsylvania on July 22 this year. The cruise is approximately 50 miles and the final destination is the Patton family residence for an after-party with live music, food, prizes, and good times!

Many of those who attended also camped out afterwards. The cruise started off with a heavy down pour of rain, which lasted the duration of the cruise. This didn't stop the dedicated VW drivers whatsoever.

They were fortunate the rain cleared up when we arrived for the after-party. There were 42 VWs that participated this year.
