DEAR FRIENDS

Recently, while meeting with a group of parents, we discussed which colleges might best prepare their children for the workforce. As we reviewed the essential skills employers seek, one parent enthusiastically commented, “My child learned all of those things as a student at NMS!”

That parent’s realization struck a chord with me. The seeds of discipline, collaboration, time management, leadership, and growth mindset were all planted early on in my own music study, beginning as a six-year-old music student at NMS. Later, as a performing musician and bandleader, I added to my skill set by learning about team building, communication and presentation, marketing, and fiscal management. These skills are just the tip of the iceberg of how my own participation in the arts prepared me for my career and impacted my life. I am honored to now be in the position to give back to my community by creating arts education opportunities for others.

The arts impact us in deeply personal and undeniable ways.

Throughout the pages of this book, you will learn how these impacts manifest in our hallways and continue to grow. NMS is a vital contributor to the New Haven community, and our success relies on sustainable funding, inspirational teaching artists, impactful partnerships, and continually evolving strategic vision.

Over the last three years we have seen tremendous growth from individuals and foundations, allowing us to stabilize our organization while greatly increasing financial aid for those who need it the most.

Your support makes our impact possible.

We hope you share our belief in the power of the arts, and our conviction that everyone deserves equal access to arts education opportunities. We know you have a choice in how your philanthropic dollars are spent, and we are grateful you have chosen to support Neighborhood Music School.

With sincere gratitude, Noah Bloom, Executive Director

Our teaching artists do so much more than teach

Since NMS’s founding in 1911, an extraordinary group of teaching artists has been the driving force behind the school’s mission. Our first teachers were members of Yale School of Music and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and were dedicated to providing unencumbered access to music education. Today, our teaching community has expanded to include educators from all over the globe who bring a wide range of educational, performing, and teaching experience. This special combination of skills and backgrounds, coupled with a relentless dedication to meet the individual and ever-evolving needs of students, is what teaching artistry is all about.

* 110 teaching artists year-round, plus 40 more each summer

* 50% of our teachers have been at NMS for 10+ years

* 32,000 hours of instruction are provided each year

Our talented and passionate teaching artists engage each student’s interest and enthusiasm, providing the tools they need to reach their unique potential.

We interact in classrooms, hallways, and on stage. We encourage and inspire each other. We gather, learn, and grow together.

We are an amazing community

One of the most unique aspects of the NMS experience is coming together under one roof with others from different communities to learn, perform, and build lasting friendships.

* 2,500 students ages 6 months to 97 years old

* From 80+ cities and towns

* 25% are adults

* Multi-generational interactions

* Beginners to professionals

* A wide range of backgrounds and orientations

We are stronger together

Investing in access

ENGLISH FAMILY LEAVES LEGACY

In June, NMS received an extraordinary gift of $3.5 million from the estate of James D. English. Invested for long-term growth in a trust at the Community Foundation, this gift will produce more than $100,000 per year.

The English family has a long history of philanthropy in New Haven and has been associated with NMS for more than 80 years. In 1948, James’s mother, Katharine Dana English, was the chair of the Board of Directors. At that time, the Board (with limited resources in hand) was faced with an important decision whether to provide a professional salary for a new director or continue providing free instruction. They did not have the resources to do both. At this critical time, Katharine English stood up and said, “If we can’t maintain our commitment to access, we should close our doors.”

Those words ring true today. This incredible gift will allow us to further strengthen our commitment to equity in arts education, broaden access, and remove barriers to learning and participation. This work is at the center of our mission and core values. As a community school for the arts, we strongly believe equity is the foundation of the social contract we must uphold.

NMS CREATES OPPORTUNITY THROUGH: * Need-based financial aid * Merit scholarships * Free programming * Participation discounts * Employee discounts * Free space for partner organizations * Opportunities for neuro-diverse learners * Experiences for students of every skill, interest, and commitment level
We actively promote equity in arts education, enable broad access through financial aid, and remove barriers to learning and participation.

How do we spend a dollar?

Investing in sustainability

Over the last two years, through generous donations from our community and astute financial management, we have paid off our mortgage and long term debt and rebuilt a working capital reserve. We are now in a position where all donations will go toward creating the impacts our donors intend, not just organizational survival.

“As a senior finance professional and a veteran of various boards, I find very impressive the fiscal discipline with which NMS business is conducted by Noah and the NMS management. Funds are allocated to strategic and operational programs with considerable due diligence. Donors should feel confident that their investment return is being maximized every day.”

Investing in instruments of learning

RECORDING STUDIO

NMS has a 112-year history of learning, teaching, and performing. With the addition of our new state-of-the-art audio and video recording studio, we can document and share our work in new ways. Students and teachers will now be able to record and produce audition material, videos, podcasts and other instructional materials. We will create educational programming as well as launch our new label named Equitone Records, with an inaugural cohort of ten BIPOC artists.

BÖSENDORFER PIANO

NMS is now the proud owner of a 1938 Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano, gifted to us by a wonderfully generous donor. It stretches an impressive nine feet eight inches, has 92 keys (four more than most pianos!) and is an extraordinary instrument. It has taken its rightful place as our premier concert piano. Bösendorfers are extremely rare and we are so fortunate to have this instrument at NMS.

PIANO LAB

Built in the summer of 2021, our Piano Lab has become one of the most active rooms within our school. With an ever-expanding curriculum, the multi-tiered programming developed by Mary Bloom, Director of Music Education, uses the keyboard to explore literacy, composition, and improvisation at all levels of study. The lab is a great resource for every musician, no matter their instrument or skill level.

RECITAL HALL

With newly installed cameras and microphones in our Recital Hall, NMS will be able to livestream and record our 200+ performances a year, to reach a wider audience and create an important cultural archive.

Instruments were among the first technological tools ever created. NMS continues to expand the ways we serve our students by adding to our toolbox.
Sharing knowledge over many years builds joyful relationships that last a lifetime.

Investing in teaching

Our teachers are the lifeblood of NMS. Investing in their growth is an investment in our entire educational ecosystem.

* Pedagogical trainings

* Mentorship opportunities

* Teaching Artistry Lab, led by Tina Hadari

* Dance and Wellness program

* Cultural Equity seminars

* ABAR workshops

* Technology and recording support

“NMS teaching artists have a collective experience of over 3,000 years of teaching! Organizing a way for teachers to share this rare treasure trove of knowledge is an investment in the future of our community.

The mentoring program not only shapes the work of our newer teachers, giving them skills that will last throughout their careers, but also invigorates new thoughts and methods for our experienced teachers.”

Thank you for investing in NMS!

NMS gratefully acknowledges the many generous donors, institutions, businesses and foundations listed here who thoughtfully supported our students and programs from July 2021 through June 2022.
