Story. Lucy Hyslop.

We always knew Berlin’s Trippen had class. Ask Angela Spieth and Michael Oehler – the masterminds of the revolutionary, iconic, yet achingly sustainable footwear – to name their favourite films, and there’s more than a clue about their creative machinations: Kill Bill (“because of the bold brutality”), Last Tango in Paris (“the passion”), Clockwork Orange (“the production”), Citizen Kane (“the atmosphere”), The Shining (“the tension”), The Constant Gardener (“the pictures and the history”. The list is notably erudite. Not that there’s much of this type of downtime for the pioneering pair who, for nearly two decades, have produced Trippen’s cult-status handmade wearable works of art. (The company now sells in 35 countries and boasts a turnover around the 10-million Euro – or $16.2 million – mark.) “‘Unwinding’ doesn’t work,” they admit in written answers translated from their native German. “Shoes are an obsession – you have to learn to live with it.” Rejecting the tantalizingly cheap option of mass-marketed production in Asia in favour of more expensive, but more local production in Germany and Italy, Trippen is the little shoe company that could. “In the 90s we could already foresee the madness of this short-lived mass market,” they add. “The only right thing to do was to work against this trend. The world is smaller today, but it has also become more superficial. Often specific cultural differences are neglected towards a global unit market, but we try to emphasize the specialty from individual markets, which is highly appreciated now.” These shoes – inventively named from Aphrodite to Zeus and ambitiously inspired by “architecture, nature, art, politics, history and different cultures” – quickly garnered praise from style mavens and wooed dedicated followers. Since starting their first shop in the German capital’s Hackeschen Markt (before, it must be noted,

its trendification) in the early 90s, they have achieved career highlights such as breaking into Paris in 1995 and Japan during the 1996/1997 “great Trippen-boom”. “Some stores are important to show the image of a brand and to establish it longterm in the market,” the pair explains. “In retrospect Trippen’s market presence was saved by stores in Japan during the financial crisis. A lot of European designers, who were only represented via wholesale in Japan, disappeared at this time from the Japanese market.” The creative team has also worked with luminary designers Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto. (Both admit that they now hanker after a collaboration with Comme des Garçons.) The defining moment of Trippen’s existence (the Middle Ages’ name is a nod to the wooden undershoes worn under their main shoes when they trod on muddy roads) came when Spieth (originally a clothes designer) and Oehler (a former shoe maker for the theatre and film industries) were looking for wood panels for a joint art project in a nearby old shoe lasts – or molds – factory. “We had a brainwave when we saw some old wooden soles from the 60s and 70s: here we could produce open shoes and shoe sculptures without big machinery cost,” they say. “We foresaw endless opportunities.” So why, in their opinion, did they feel the world needed Trippen? That’s easy. “Because the perfect shoe didn’t exist,” the Trippen duet write succinctly. With the search for that perfection still forming the starting point for each and every pair that they design today, the duo’s wish for their lasting legacy hardly feels lofty: “To be accepted in the collection at MoMA [the Museum of Modern Art] in New York City,” they state, “or even to have our own exhibit there.” Trippen is sold at Gravity Pope. 2205 West 4th Ave. 604.731.7673

HENRY PILCHER Story. Ron Coldham

Let’s be honest. This whole environmental responsibility movement can be a real pain in the ass sometimes. No one enjoys the sticky task of sorting cans and bottles, most trips on mass transit are arguably a preview of what hell will actually be like, and nobody wants to endure another dirty look shot our way by the nosering sporting check-out girl at the grocery store when we request double plastic bags. But when it comes to fine furniture fashions, Australian designer Henry Pilcher has made it a little easier to be a responsible citizen of planet Earth. “As a designer, it is a responsibility to be aware of the materials we use and their impact on the environment,” Pilcher suggests. “This series of cardboard designs is an experiment with a recyclable fibres material.” A graduate of both the Australian National University and the Rhode Island School of Design, the twenty-four year old Pilcher’s sleek and eye-catching efforts are already making an international splash. But it appears that regardless of how much the art world embraces his work, his true objective is still inspired by his conscience. In fact, when posed with the question of whether the decision to work with recycled cardboard was motivated by art or environmental responsibility, Pilcher doesn’t even hesitate: “Environmental responsibility.” With that kind of dedication and awareness perhaps the planet will actually survive long enough for us to witness the full extent of Henry Pilcher’s creative (and caring) genius. DREW WILLIAM Story. Ron Coldham

It’s no secret that in most creative realms necessity is the mother of invention. But how often is a blatant error the mother of a career? As TLC* recently learned while chatting with clothing designer Drew William, it has thankfully happened at least once. “Growing up I studied ceramics, which led me to pursue studying fine art at Emily Carr,” explains William. “It wasn’t until I was on exchange and mistakenly enrolled in graphic illustration at Central Saint Martins in London that design even came into my consciousness. I had never had ambitions to become a designer before, let alone design clothing. After finishing my degree at Emily Carr, I pursued a career in fashion and haven’t looked back since.” Both studying overseas and a fruitful stint working in Denmark (“It fuelled a more courageous approach to my design practice.”) have clearly helped shape Drew William into one of the fashion world’s more innovative up and comers. Upon discussing the inspirations behind his clothing, the Edmonton-born designer’s response paints an even clearer picture of the originality, crispness, and subtle whimsy that his vision encapsulates: “I think of myself more as a filter. I am always looking, researching, and taking in new information. I siphon that information down into something that can be consumable - it’s my perspective on the world. Usually it’s at odds with itself. I find things that are in competition with one another fascinating, and so you’ll see numerous visual contrasts in my designs. But generally, it’s my perception that inspires me… as well as a hopeless addiction to non-fat caramel lattes.” And it would appear the twenty-three year old designer has just as clear a vision when asked about his future aspirations: “World Domination, and an accordingly lavish lifestyle,” William quips. “Other than that, I want to introduce a new way of visualizing to the modern man. I feel like he’s not contemporary. I would love to see my work redefine unisexual terminology like ‘androgyny’ and create something new, something transcendent.” If only all our mistakes could turn out so well. www.drewwilliam.com

SARAH MACDOUGALL Story. RC Joseph

Summer is the perfect time for folk music festivals and trips to Europe. But if you aren’t able to make it to either this season, don’t worry. TLC* managed to catch up with Swedish/Canadian folk songstress extraordinaire Sarah MacDougall in an effort to deliver to our readers a little sample of both easy summer listening and acrossthe-pond charm. Sarah MacDougall’s music has been aptly described as “possessing the fun and flirt of Feist, the depth and soul of Tracy Chapman, and the powerful, haunting delivery of Chan Marshall,” and her latest release, Across The Atlantic, offers a collection of up-tempo ditties and bittersweet ballads that make the previous quote sound more accurate than ever. We sat down to talk with Sarah upon her return from her recent European tour. TLC: How does summer inspire you as an artist? Sarah MacDougall: I tend to spend more time outside, so I notice more plants and birds. And beautiful, lightly dressed people - there are lots of songs inspired by them. I also really like summer storms. They are incredibly intense. TLC: What are the best and worst things about touring in the summer? SM: There are lots of festivals in the summer, and (hopefully) no ice on the roads. But I have hay fever in June, so that is the one negative while touring. TLC: What are you listening to these days? SM: I was just on tour with the band Po’Girl, so I have been listening to a lot of their music for the last while. Lately I am also listening to Bruce Springsteen and my Swedish favourite Lars Winnerback. My most recent discovery is the Bell Orchestre. I heard them on the plane back to Canada from Europe, and fell in love with their stuff! TLC: If you could perform a duet with any artist, who would that be? SM: Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Nicks, Patti Smith, or Emmylou Harris.

TLC: When you’re nominated for a Grammy, what will you be wearing on the red carpet? SM: Either a Patti Smith style black and white suit or some crazy colourful dress like the one M.I.A. wore this year. TLC: What’s the biggest difference you notice between Canada and Scandinavia? SM: The bread is much better in Scandinavia! And there are more really, really old buildings. Another difference is that people lean toward more idealistic, socialist views in general. And it’s o.k. to be melancholy and less polite - it’s sort of in the Scandinavian blood. TLC: How does your European background translate into your songwriting? SM: It translates in every way. It is hard to pinpoint, because my songs come from inside of me. I am half Swedish and half Canadian, so that translates into my songs. It is who I am. I am someone who grew up in a northern landscape and listened to Scandinavian and North American music as a kid. TLC: Successful bands: Democracies or dictatorships? SM: Dictatorship works for me. TLC: What are you working on next? SM: I am recording an EP of some new songs, some of old songs, and a few covers that I play live. And I’m writing an album about storms, hopefully to be recorded and released next year. Any musician as talented as Sarah MacDougall will undoubtedly turn me into a fan. Any musician as talented as Sarah MacDougall who also loves Bruce Springsteen and would banish Tyra Banks runs the risk of turning me into an obsessed stalker. (Not to worry, Sarah. I am quite harmless.) www.myspace.com/sarahmacdougall

TLC: Name a celebrity you would refuse to let backstage after one of your shows. SM: Hmmmm… Tyra Banks?

MANGO CHUTNEY DIP Entertaining made easy. Chef Marnie Coldham

This is the first column I have ever been asked to write, so to commemorate such an occasion I have decided to open my vault and share a dip recipe which I very rarely give out. Even as I am writing this, however, I am still a little hesitant. You see, over the years I have come to the harsh realization that it is neither my sparkling personality nor my witty conversation that has kept my phone ringing and the invites coming; it has been recipes like this one. So I am giving you this secret gem out of faith - faith that you TLC* readers, as the chosen few, will also be very particular with regards to whom you bestow this recipe upon. Actually, f**k that. What I really need you to do is promise you will guard it with your lives and reveal it to no other living soul, for if this recipe tragically becomes as ubiquitous as red pepper hummus or spinach bread dip (yawn and yawn), my phone will surely stop ringing and my life as a recluse will begin.

MANGO CHUTNEY DIP

1 (250 g) package cream cheese, softened 3 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tbsp curry powder 1 large garlic clove, grated or minced 2 cups grated old or extra old cheddar cheese 3 green onions, finely chopped 1 jar mango chutney (I always use Major Grey’s) 1/4 cup chopped cilantro 1/4 tsp. poppy seeds (optional) 38

In a large mixing bowl, place cream cheese, mayonnaise, curry powder and garlic. Using a handheld mixer or kitchen mixer, beat ingredients until cream cheese is soft. Add the cheddar cheese, green onions and one tbsp of chopped cilantro. Mix until all ingredients are incorporated. Using a rubber spatula, transfer cream cheese mix to your serving plate and spread it making a thicker outer edge. Refrigerate until ready to serve. To serve, spread mango chutney evenly on top of curried cream cheese mix. Sprinkle the remaining chopped cilantro and poppy seeds (optional) on the mango chutney. Serve with crackers. Tips: You can always have this dip close at hand by making the cream cheese base, rolling the mix in a ball, wrapping it well in plastic wrap and keeping it in the freezer. To serve, defrost in fridge for a few hours then add chutney. And leftover dip makes for an incredible sandwich. Spread leftover dip on a fresh baguette. Add some prawns sautéed in garlic, or even a chicken breast. Top with cilantro and cucumber. Drinks: Goes well with a Gewurztraminer. However, I am more of a red wine drinker so I usually serve this dip with Pierre Sparr Pinot Gris Reserve (France) - the red wine drinkers’ white.
