Reinforced concrete uses the best attributes of both materials combining the compressive strength of concrete with the tensile strength of steel to produce a superior “hybrid� system, allowing more slender and intricate structures to be made from easily obtained and worked materials. The combining of these attributes also works from a corrosion perspective with the high alkalinity of new concrete (PH 13) helping to maintain a layer of passive iron oxide on the surface of the embedded steel, protecting it from harmful corrosion.

Unfortunately, if left unprotected, the effects of the environment take their toll. Damage to the concrete by freeze thaw action, mechanical damage and even chemical reactions between the concrete and atmospheric CO2 each has a role to play in the deterioration of our infrastructure. Ultimately, if left unchecked, corrosion leads to dangerous problems which can include spalling debris dropping from buildings, structures and bridges and, in extreme cases, structural collapse.
