Lagoon City was the brainchild of Hungarian Engineer Andrew Zsolt and is the oldest canal community in Ontario. Designed in the 1960’s and constructed in the 1970’s it is centred on the Trent Severn Waterway. Lagoon City is located on the shores of Lake Simcoe in Ontario, this “Venice” of Ontario has over 16 km of canals. To provide access to homes and businesses, small two-lane clear span timber bridges were constructed over the canals, these allow small watercraft to pass underneath, while still permitting vehicular traffic to flow around the community. These bridges consist of 10 timber piles supporting two large timber beams, a timber deck with concrete wearing surface and ornate timber parapets, each one with a different theme.
Four Brothers Construction were tasked with the restoration of the supporting piles and associated retaining walls on the bridge providing access to Pinetree Court. Due to the extensive nature of the project, steel curtain wall dams were driven in either side of the bridge and the structure was dewatered, this allowed full access to all 10 piles and the retaining walls. On initial inspection, extensive damage was evident on two of the original piles. The Project Engineer devised a repair and upgrading program for the piles, consisting of a Fiberglass Pile Jacket with an Epoxy Infill. The timber piles were also supplemented with additional fiberglass reinforcement, placed vertically around each pile, prior to installing the jackets.
