ARCHES WRAPPED IN CARBOCOMP TEXTILE
THE CHALLENGE The glulam (glued and laminated) timber arches of a gymnasium were damaged due to water ingress through the roof structure. This compromised their bearing capacity to the point where the structure required support by scaffold along the center line until repair works could be carried out. THE SOLUTION The strengthening solution for these arches involved a two stage process. Initially any cracks, voids and delaminated sections were pressure injected with Structo Inject 1390, a very high strength epoxy injection resin, using drilled in mechanical packers. The very low viscosity of Structo Inject 1390 ensured all damage was repaired.
Once the injection work was completed, the next step was to strengthen the lower sections of the arches with CarboComp Textile 225, bonded to the beams with 5800 Carbo LPL, a thixotropic epoxy resin that is suitable for both vertical and horizontal applications. The beams were wrapped with the Carbon Fibre textile to restore their original bearing capacity, ensuring that they would not sag once the central supports were removed. This structural strengthening system has many advantages including high tensile strength and stiffness, ease of application, minimal creep, excellent durability and will not require any future maintenance.
