AREA: Façade Retention

PREPARATION

DATE: September 2014 MATERIAL QUANTITY: Approx. 4,000 Square Feet LOCATION: Toronto, Ontario AFTER THE CHALLENGE Calibre Structures in conjunction with McCulloch Movers were challenged with retaining the historical Victorian façades of 19th Century townhomes as part of the redevelopment of 7 St. Thomas Street in the heart of the Bloor Yorkville commercial district. This unique location is being redeveloped as a “Commercial Condo”, allowing businesses the opportunity to own their office space. The concept for the building is to combine the restored Victorian townhomes with a contemporary fritted glass tower which will be constructed “around” the townhomes. THE SOLUTION The strengthening, which was designed by Sebberas Professional Services who are specialists in the field of building movement and façade retention, utilized CarboComp Textile 300 in combination with CarboComp 5800LPL Saturant and CarboComp 5800BL Epoxy Adhesive as a levelling layer.

CarboComp was used to create “columns and beams” on the inside brick wall and to distribute loads around openings including doors, windows and fireplaces. This is used in combination with an external steel supporting structure to hold the façade in place during the construction process. Stonhard was able to provide assistance with on-site testing and training for McCulloch Movers, who required the Carbon Fibre to be installed prior to being able to support the exterior of the building. CarboComp Textile 300 is a unidirectional carbon fibre textile with strand oriented in longitudinal direction used to increase the bearing capacity of columns in bridges and buildings and the shear strength of beams. This textile is adhered to the surface with 5800 Carbo LPL.
