Central East Division, located at 77 Centre Street North, is home to the Municipality of the Region of Durham’s busiest police jurisdiction accounting for 35.2% of all police calls for service. The building also contains many Regional support units and is home to more than 410 police staff. As part of an extensive upgrade to the facility to improve space utilization, public accessibility and operational efficiency, the 50,000ft2 secure underground parking garage was refurbished following a public bidding process with Stonhard providing the most competitive bid. The project scope included redecoration to the walls and columns, cleaning and coating pipework, removal of outdated signage and the restoration of the concrete slabs to provide a light bright and safe surface, which is required in this fast paced and busy environment.
Key challenges faced when working on this slab on grade structure were providing a suitable moisture management system to deal with the significant vapour pressure measured through the slab, repair of significant salt corrosion over much of the surface area and the provision of a safe anti-slip traffic topping designed to meet the challenges and demands of a busy police jurisdiction. The Stonhard Team in conjunction with Heywood Innovative Designs, Durham Region Facilities Management Division and Durham Regional Police’s Facilities Team delivered an exceptional project using Stonfil OP2 System for both moisture management and leveling the surfaces and StonDeck XD2 Parking Deck Solution to provide the anti-skid surfacing over the slab. Additional texture was introduced into the access ramps and on the internal car wash. Stonhard delivered the project on time and on budget.
