In August 2004, renovation to the underground parking structure of the RIZIV-Building in Brussels, Belgium began to repair 3,000 square metres of cracking in the concrete slabs and corrosion of the upper layer of steel reinforcement bars. The initial solution was to cast a 100mm concrete slab over the old slab. The time line for this was 8 weeks. There were concerns regarding proper adhesion between the old and new concrete slab, free heights, ramp connections, weight increase

and placement of the concrete due to poor access. An alternative design utilizing bonded CarboComp Carbon Fibre Laminates to replace the reinforcement was investigated, resulting in the installation of 4,500 metres of CarboComp Laminate at a total thickness of 8mm with no additional load on the structure. The installation process took two weeks with a cost saving of 15% over the original design.
