BENEFITS OF BALANCE FYZICAL Therapy - Stone Oak treats and prevents Injuries while improving mobility

an you stand on one foot for the count of 10? Go ahead, get to a safe spot close to a wall and try it. Did you know that simple assessment can identify health risks and potential longevity?

Lauren moved 13 times in her 22 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. Upon retirement, she wanted to put down permanent roots. As she looked for a business to call her own in Stone Oak, she drew upon her experience in health care administration. “I’ve been doing health care for so long,” she said. “This is where my heart is.”

“This gold standard test is a good indicator of your balance and overall health,” said Lauren Byrd, Clinic She chose to open FYZICAL Stone Oak because its Owner of FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers – Stone emphasis on balance fills a need in the community. Oak, which opened its doors at 20818 Gathering Oak in January 2023. “The farther away you are from 10 seconds, the higher the indication you might have something you need to address – pain, injury, a vestibular or inner ear problem. It’s a call to action.” Lauren’s no stranger to physical pain. She has benefitted from physical therapy personally – most recently when she injured her sciatic nerve and lost her ability to balance and lift one heel off the ground. Her elementaryage daughter also was able to use physical therapy to retrain a toe-walking gait. “I’m a big believer in the value of PT as it relates to holistic health before medication or surgical intervention,” Lauren said.

"Balance is core to your wellness,” Lauren said. “Our proprietary, science-informed balance treatment protocols have been developed by FYZICAL’s national director of education. They are evidenced-based to treat people at different level of balance impairment. Conditions like Parkinson’s Disease or Multiple Sclerosis naturally impair a person’s vestibular system. Likewise, Vertigo can be a scary and disabling condition – but it’s treatable.” FYZICAL Stone Oak offers full-service physical therapy to people ages 7-97 — everything from helping athletes get back in the game after injury, to strengthening muscles pre-or post-surgery, to reducing dizziness for those with vestibular problems, to increasing mobility and reducing fall risk as people age. Oftentimes Lauren will receive a call from an adult child worried about their parent’s mobility. They’ve noticed their loved one is unsteady or has trouble navigating to the bathroom in the dark. FYZICAL Stone Oak offers free fall assessments that include a gait evaluation. Their physical therapists can recommend services to help someone climb stairs or navigate showering with confidence.

FYZICAL Stone Oak has a safety overhead harness system to help someone feel confident they will not get hurt attempting to walk. The heavy-duty harness connects to a rail in the ceiling and allows the patient to get out of a scooter or wheelchair with support. For one struggling with dizziness, their trained physical therapists can use infrared Video Oculography Goggles (or IVOG) to measure the activity in the eye to help diagnose if the problem is in the brain or inner ear. They are skilled at maneuvering the head to reposition the crystals in the inner ear, which can relieve the problem. You won’t find cookie cutter programs at FYZICAL Stone Oak. Every patient works one-on-one with doctoratelevel trained physical therapists who create individual treatment plans including manual modalities like

therapeutic dry needling, myofascial release, massage therapy and deep electrical stimulation. One of Lauren’s primary roles during her military career was to help those injured in combat evacuate home to medical care and their loved ones. Her greatest reward is knowing her work fulfilled the military’s commitment to take care of injured service personnel. She’s been able to replicate that feeling of fulfillment as she helps people in her Stone Oak neighborhood. Recently, Lauren ran into a FYZICAL Stone Oak patient at a local restaurant who gave her a big hug and told her she couldn’t wait to come back to therapy. “I got the same amazing feeling I used to when I helped patients get the care they needed. Seeing the smiles on their faces and knowing I was making a difference in their lives — I’m so excited I can help people get free of pain and live in a community where I can run into them again. It’s a full-circle moment.” Know someone who needs to rehab an injury? Concerned about an elderly loved one’s mobility? Schedule a free fall risk assessment at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers – Stone Oak. No need to go through a gatekeeper, in Texas, people are able to select their own physical therapist. FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers – Stone Oak is in-network with most major insurance companies, and they’ll file the paperwork to facilitate proper payment through your insurance or Medicare.

HOLISTIC HEALTH

Peak Physical In-Depth Exam Answers Health Questions By Amy Morgan

E

verybody’s setting health goals for the new year. Worried a hereditary medical condition might be lurking in your future? Need a baseline so you can track improvements? Husband and wife team Dr. Prisiliano and Dr. Monica Salas trained in both primary care and lifestyle medicine and created their practice, Salveo Direct Care, to help their patients reach their optimum health. Lifestyle Medicine addresses six areas that are important to a whole person: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, eliminating toxic substances and positive social connectedness. While Dr. Salas conducts a thorough physical annually for every patient, those interested in learning even more about their wellbeing can schedule a day-long Outlive Health Experience to help individuals achieve peak performance. Busy people appreciate the ability to generate a very detailed health report from one visit. Dr. Salas’ lifestyle review includes a 3D body scan and body composition analysis, but a Outlive Health Experience ramps up the amount of testing to provide extensive information based on a person’s unique biochemistry and metabolic data. After the doctor documents a detailed exercise history, patients undergo a VO2 max challenge to determine aerobic/anaerobic fitness and a complete mobility and strength test to assess range of motion. They employ a specialized device called a dynamometer to measure exertion force ability head to toe and across the midline. Mobility is important because people with poor balance are prone to falls and injury, Dr. Prisiliano said. The Outlive Health Experience includes a cardiac stress test to determine heart health and identify any areas of concern. “This robust exam measures the heart’s electrical activity while exercising to see if there are any deficiencies in blood flow to different parts of the heart and illuminate potential coronary artery disease or heart muscle/valve problems,” Dr. Prisiliano said. Results allow the doctors to create a customized fitness plan. In addition to discussing nutrition, eating habits and caffeine and alcohol consumption, Dr. Salas will conduct a food sensitivity blood test that looks for 180 different inflammatory markers. “Patients may not know they are overconsuming something that causes inflammation in their bodies, resulting in fatigue or gastrointestinal symptoms,” he said. The doctors can develop an elimination protocol to reveal and reduce inflammatory foods.

Pictured is an example of the VO2 Max challenge test. A similar test can be performed by patients during Salveo Direct Care’s Outlive Health Experience.

Dr. Prisiliano remembers a patient who diligently ate oatmeal for breakfast daily believing it was healthy for his heart, even though he habitually felt slightly nauseous afterward. A sensitivity test revealed the patient had an oat intolerance! “The quantitative data also will reveal biochemicals that can point us in the direction of micronutrient excess or deficiencies,” Dr. Prisiliano said. The doctors will develop a protocol of customized supplementation, along with a plant-based, whole food diet to give the body what the tests reveal it actually needs. You may feel worn down from the holiday season. The Outlive Health Experience includes time in the tranquility suite to lower stress. The doctors will check cortisol levels in the saliva throughout the day to monitor adrenal gland function. Coaches demonstrate yoga routines and are available for emotional support. Both doctors teach breathwork and guided mediation as coping skills and as a pathway to restorative sleep. Mental wellness is one of the most important things to a healthy life, Dr. Prisiliano said. Three Things You Can Do Today to Improve Your Health 1. Set a SMART goal for your health for the month (and one for each month that follows, if possible!) Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound 2. Take 5 minutes per day to focus on meditation or breathwork to help manage stress. 3. Find ways to connect with a friend every weekwhether through a text, phone call or a coffee date.

Top-Tier Twins

Sorensen Brothers Excel in Scholastics and Service By Amy Morgan

I

t takes no small effort to be ranked at the top of the class at extremely competitive Johnson High School. The Sorensen twins hold both the number one and two spots, with Ian nudging brother Chris out of first place by a hair so small, the two aren’t exactly sure what differentiated their GPAs – maybe one A- rather than an A on a paper or project freshman year. They also scored the same 1570/1600 on their SATs. Ian is a National Merit Semifinalist, and Christ was rated Commended by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Although the two are identical and share similar interests, they are not difficult to tell apart. Chris is the more outgoing, while Ian prefers individual study. Their ability to self-motivate proved helpful, as they studied math on their own through most of middle and high school to be eligible to take AP Calculus BC at Johnson, a class Chris described as fun! The Sorensens enjoyed serving as PALS at JHS junior year, remembering their time spent oneon-one with elementary schoolers and the ALE bowling and basketball tournaments as most rewarding. They stepped back as seniors to be part of the career prep class, which allows them to leave campus early to work tutoring math. Chris enjoys explaining the subject to struggling students at Mathnasium in a way they will understand. Ian works there also to “bring a level of joy and excitement to math.” Not surprisingly, both Sorensens enjoy math and computer science. They plan to attend Brigham Young University to study computer science with hopes of careers developing artificial intelligence. Chris described the idea of teaching a computer how to learn “the purest form of problem solving,” and looks forward to AI’s future opportunities. The boys put their computer skills to good use in 2019 when their family opened the Texas Cookie Shop. Chris designed the website, and Ian launched the app. Both were happy to

taste-test the recipes and set up the store’s Stone Oak location. Since then, Ian has programmed multiple apps, his most profitable a virtual garage sale accessed through various app stores. Musically talented, the brothers use the LogiPro app to create tracks of music they upload to Apple Music and Spotify. They sing and taught themselves to play the guitar, piano and drums. Both participated in JHS’s varsity choir through sophomore year, with Ian advancing as one of the top 15 Basses in the region. Although their school schedule precluded their continuing formally at JHS, they sing as part of their congregational choir at their Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Church. The twins also are active in the congregation – they co-lead more than 300 youth in the Hill Country area, and Chris mentors younger students and organizes service projects. The brothers have found time to serve as National Honor Society officers – Ian as President with Chris his VP. They lead the meetings, coordinate the volunteer calendar and account for dues and hours. Chris reinstated a program to restock the JHS nurse’s supply of ice bags, and they honored firefighters on 9/11. With bright futures ahead and a legacy of service and success at JHS, Chris and Ian’s only pressing concern – which of their favorite teachers to select for their Summa celebrations this spring.

Sensible Celebrations Second Cookbook Promotes Healthy Game Plan

By Amy Morgan

W

hether your goal is to prevent illness and injury or improve recovery, make a New Year’s resolution to create a plan that fosters good overall health. Get game day ready with wise choices that set your family’s health up for a win. This delicious slow cooker white chicken chili offers you a nutritious option for gatherings that won’t bust your calorie budget. It’s just one of the recipes in the second cookbook created for the community by Jennifer Meachum, R.D.N., L.D., Physicians Premier SA Regional Marketing Manager. Last year Physicians Premier enlisted Jennifer to draw upon her nutrition background to develop a cookbook with healthy, easy-to-prepare recipes. Now she is back with a second edition, HealthiER Occasions, which is filled with recipes for celebrations from Valentine’s Day to Thanksgiving — and everything in between. Drop by Physicians Premier, located west of Highway 281 on Highway 46 near the HEB Plus, to pick up your free copy of the cookbook. Or email marketing @mdpremier. com, and Jennifer will be happy to mail you one. “We tend to think of the traditional holiday season as a time that can derail us from our health goals, but I realized when I was thinking about this cookbook that special occasions happen all year round,” Jennifer said. She wanted to offer a healthy option for any event, as she’s personally experienced the difference small changes can make. More than 20 years ago, Jennifer’s New Year’s resolution led to her losing 100 pounds and turned her life in a new direction, including a career path as a dietitian. You, too, can make a healthy game plan. If you should experience any type of emergency or health crisis, the professionals at Physicians Premier free-standing emergency room stand ready to help. One of Physician Premier’s doctors, Aaron Terry, M.D., is an avid runner. But you don’t have to try to beat Dr. Terry to the finish line — walking is enough to reap health benefits. He recommends just starting to move for 30 minutes, five days a week. And make sure you are getting enough sleep. Sleep remains extremely important to overall wellness, as it is our body’s opportunity to restore, build muscle, and break down unwanted fat. Follow Jennifer’s tips on your wellness journey. 1. Set small measurable goals. 2. Aim for 25-35 grams of fiber daily from whole grains,

nuts, legumes, beans, fruits, and vegetables. 3. Prepare more meals at home - grilling, broiling, air frying, and roasting add fewer calories. 4. Swap out high calorie drinks with water or unsweetened beverages. 5. Track your food intake with an app. Slow Cooker White Chicken Chili • 1 cup low sodium chicken broth • 1 cup onion, chopped • 2 TBSP all-purpose flour • 2 tsp chili powder • 1 tsp ground cumin • ½ tsp salt • 1/8 tsp black pepper • 1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into ½ inch pieces • 2 cans cannellini or Great Northern beans, rinsed & drained • 1 can no-salt added whole-kernel corn, drained • 1 (4.5 oz) can chopped green chiles • 2 garlic cloves, minced • ½ cup shredded reduced fat Mexican blend or cheddar cheese • ½ cup light sour cream or plain Greek yogurt • 2 TBSP cilantro, chopped fresh • 1 small avocado, peeled, seed removed, and diced Directions: Combine chicken broth, onion, flour, chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, chicken, beans, corn, green chiles, and garlic in an electric slow cooker. Cover and cook on high 1 hour. Reduce heat to low and cook 4 hours. Serve chili topped with cheese, sour cream, cilantro, and avocado.

Safety After Sunset

Stay Alert and Visible to Prevent Mishaps After Dark

By Camp Bow Wow Staff

A

lthough we’ve passed the winter solstice, January days are still short. If you work regular business hours, that means you are probably walking Fido before the sun rises or after sunset. Take some precautions to keep you and your furry family member from having a mishap in the dark. Use a sidewalk if possible, and walk facing traffic, so you can be aware of approaching vehicles. Make sure your pup’s leash is tight enough so you can pull him close and off the road quickly if necessary. Invest in some reflective gear – both for you, and your precious pooch. Dark-colored pups will blend in with the surroundings, making them almost impossible to detect. Wear a headlamp or carry a flashlight. Not only will it make you more visible to motorists or other walkers, the light will illuminate your path and expose any hazard prior to your stumbling upon it. Harnesses, leashes and collars come in reflective fabric as well as with LED-powered lights. You can also attach an illuminated tag to Fido’s collar to make him easier to see — some even flash in a variety of colors. Did you know dogs’ eyes work better in the dark than humans do, and especially at dawn and dusk? Your furry family member will see an approaching animal before you do and may try to investigate. Be wary of wildlife. Early evening hours are often a busy crossing time for deer, porcupines or even a stray coyote. You don’t

want to tangle with a not-so-friendly woodland creature. In addition to light, make some noise to alert wildlife of your presence. You can wear a bell, jingle your keys, listen to a podcast out loud or carry on a one-sided conversation with your pup. Typically, animals will melt away into the darkness rather than put up a fight for streetside territory. Walking in the dark is not the time to be distracted on the phone or use earbuds. As the pet parent, you are responsible for your pup’s safety and wellbeing as well as yours. Make sure you stop at signs and look for crossing traffic before leading Fido across a street. Don’t give up the healthy benefits of exercise for both you and your furry family member just because winter days darken early. San Antonio’s mild weather means temperatures often will be more pleasant than in our scorching summers. Taking a few extra precautions can keep you walking despite the diminished light.

DENTAL DIGEST

Dentistry Determines Destiny Don’t Overlook Oral Health when Making Resolutions By Amy Morgan

H

ave you made a self-improvement New Year’s resolution? If you’re like most Americans – the thought has at least crossed your mind. What’s the first thing people notice about you – especially on-line or in pictures. Your smile! Perhaps you overdid the red wine or coffee drinks over the holidays and want to spruce up your teeth. Shiny, healthy teeth and fresh breath are a real confidence booster. But even more important than cosmetic improvements, oral health has far-reaching impact. “Patients come to us because they want a pretty smile,” said Michelle Alvarez, Lead Orthodontic Assistant at 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics. “But our main goal is not only straight, white healthy teeth, but a functional bite for a lifetime.” Poor dental hygiene translates directly to dangerous medical complications. Gum disease caused by unchecked bacteria in the mouth has been linked to heart problems, respiratory infections, pregnancy complications, kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis and even dementia. More immediately, an infection from a compromised tooth can abscess and travel internally to damage the heart or brain, which can lead to permanent disability. Dental Hygienist Linda Lara enjoys educating patients about the connection between oral health and the rest of the body. “Over accumulation of bacteria in the mouth relates to other problems,” she said. “I love to inspire patients to create a healthy lifestyle for themselves.”

Visiting the dentist for a cleaning and check every six months is an important habit to keep you healthy and stave off future problems. “Coming to get cleanings is just like taking a car for an oil change – you wouldn’t wait 15,000 miles,” Linda added. “The mouth is the same way. We can identify if something is not healthy and address the problem before it gets bigger.” Regular X-rays can reveal spots on the teeth where the enamel is not as strong. A dental professional can apply fluoride and re-mineralize the teeth. This may prevent cavities and the need for a filling. “If we do need to fill, we still can prevent a more invasive and expensive crown or root canal.” So schedule that checkup for you and your family members (including college students before they return to school). Dental professionals will look for decay or problems, screen for oral cancer (important for anyone who uses tobacco), clean, brighten, straighten or place crowns or veneers. And orthodontia has never been easier or more affordable. You can be satisfied you took a positive step toward your family’s overall health and check off an item on your resolution list!
