The Month of Invitation

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The invitations have been sent, the pictures were taken a couple of months ago, the place has been picked out for the gathering, the menu has been haggled over for weeks now—and the month has arrived. July is a month of anticipation, invitation, participation, observation, and reflection, whether it’s a wedding, an anniversary, graduation, baby shower, birthday, retirement, housewarming, Pampered Chef party, awards banquet, or just about any other occasion you can think of. Being invited is a wonderful thing.

This past year, our family has had several

occasions for sending out invitations—and receiving a few ourselves. My son is celebrating a graduation, I’m attending my 40th high school class reunion, we’re celebrating my dad’s five years of being cancer-free, and I’m marking 35 years of involvement with A Christian Ministry in the National Parks. We often think of the big things as being worthy of invitation and celebration, but I’ve been thinking about the ways I’ve been invited in little ways throughout my days.

I was invited to coffee and lunch, I was invited into a text conversation by an old friend, I was asked by the clerk at the gas station how my day was going, I was invited to play a round of golf, I was invited to a conference I enjoyed attending, and I was invited to be a part of this congregation. Your invitation to me—to be a part of your lives in so many ways—has been a joy, filled with blessings.

The disciples were invited by Jesus to come and follow Him, not knowing what was going to happen as they committed themselves to walking with Him. They went places they never imagined, did things beyond their wildest dreams, and saw things no one had ever seen before.

In this invitation, they didn’t expect tongues of fire to dance on their heads or to speak multiple languages to people from all over the world, inviting them to hear the Good News of Jesus. They were inviting people to see life differently—to feel the presence of God through the Holy Spirit.

What an invitation to anticipation, invitation, participation, observation, and reflection! We are

invited to these same things during this season of Pentecost: to a rededication of our lives, to an invitation that brings life and breath, depth and height, sun and light, growth and maturity. During this Pentecost season, we will reflect on how to practice the invitation of God’s presence in our lives—the invitation to see God in the ordinary and the sacred.

I invite you…

Blessings,

A Year of Growth and Gratitude

It’s hard to believe the current year of programming has come to an end—time truly flies when the kids are having fun! It’s been a challenging year at times, trying to keep everything running smoothly, but also a rewarding one filled with growth and joy.

In Sunday School, we wrapped up the year by celebrating and following the liturgy of each church service. Next year, we’ll dive into some of the lesserknown parables—stories we don’t always explore in church.

Our Confirmation students spent the year studying the Small Catechism. They explored the meaning of the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer. For many, it was their first time really applying these foundational teachings to their everyday lives. We ended with a fun trivia night to recap the year—and the kids answered most of the questions correctly! Youth group nights were always a highlight. One of our final gatherings was especially powerful: we collected and packed the food donated during Lent and delivered it directly to the high school. The kids saw firsthand how empty the shelves were—and the impact their efforts made. Thank you to everyone in the congregation who contributed.

A special thank you to Brenda Wilcott and our Salvation Army meal volunteers. Brenda has been instrumental in organizing help. If you haven’t heard, the Salvation Army has expanded its meal service— adding Friday lunches and extending dinner hours. They are always looking for assistance in preparing meals. Each month, we provide two meals that serve over 100 people each. The four women who helped last time were dedicated and efficient in preparing everything. We’re so grateful for all the donated ingredients—especially proteins, which help greatly with meal costs. If you’re able

to contribute, it’s always appreciated.

Remember, Vacation Bible School is coming up July 21–24! Our theme is Creation and how we, as God’s people, are called to care for it. It promises to be a fun and meaningful week. While most of our main leaders are already in place, we could still use a few more children’s shepherds to assist in classrooms. No preparation needed—just your presence and care. Thank you!

On Sunday, June 1, we will celebrate our graduating seniors. While I’m still waiting to hear from a few families, we will joyfully bless and send off the six youth graduating this year.

It has been a truly wonderful year in so many ways. We are blessed with amazing volunteers who create a loving, nurturing atmosphere for our children. Our middle school youth are growing into leaders, eager to do more and be more within our community, while mentoring the younger children. Thank you for supporting our mission to serve the children and youth of St. Olaf.

A Mid-Year Reflection: Faith, Growth, and Forward Motion

We’ve made it! Summer is here, and that means we are halfway through our church calendar. Before I talk about what lies ahead, I want to give a recap of the past full year (since July 2024). While last year threw us into some unexpected territory when both of our cherished pastors found opportunities elsewhere, our congregation has taken on this new journey with care and commitment.

Under the steady and competent leadership of President Edwina Harder, last year’s church council made decisions to keep us afloat and functioning. One of those decisions was to hire our interim minister, Pastor Kris Ferkin, who came to us as truly the answer to prayers. He jumped in with both feet and got us engaged and energized to see the positive while addressing the challenges.

One of those challenges was the unexpected, exorbitantly high insurance costs, which hit us squarely in our collective pocketbook. Another of the challenges is the expense of our mortgage. In 2023–2024, John Carroll and the Stewardship Committee brought forth the “Our Home” Campaign to raise $1 million to help reduce our mortgage obligation. It was successful, and we can be proud of how we stepped up to significantly make a dent in our mortgage. Business Administrator Eric Buntrock reports good news for our insurance costs this year, as he found a company who will reduce our costs!

Discussing money is difficult in any circumstance; addressing it within a church congregation can make some uncomfortable. However, the financial obligations are ongoing, and spending beyond our means is not a sustainable model. The 2024 church council made the bold decision to prepare and present a balanced budget for 2025, and with faithful giving and reducing costs, expect to adhere to it. This year’s council has accepted the responsibility for honoring that expectation.

The beginning of 2025 had us learning about the serious health concerns facing our beloved organist, Brian Williams. Brian passed away in late February, and we were honored to host his Celebration of Life in early April. It became apparent how much he contributed to the day-to-day church tasks (beyond his exceptional

musical talents) when he no longer was managing them.

There are not enough gold stars, high-fives, slaps on the backs, and hallelujahs to give/do/say about the wonderful roles Lyn Meany and Eric Buntrock have played over the past six months. They stepped up and stepped in. We are so thankful for their faithful service to our congregation and our church ministry. Along with Mark Metcalf, Sarv Mithaqiyan, and the staff of WEE Learning, our personnel willingly go above and beyond.

While challenges will always come before us, we have also found moments of joy over the past six months. Highlights include installing Kalle Akkerman as our cantor/organist/music director. Following in the footsteps of Neal Erickson and Brian Williams, Kalle is a very accomplished musician.

The process has begun to find a permanent Lead Minister for St. Olaf. This past winter/spring, the transition team very diligently and comprehensively met and prepared the Ministry Site Profile, which will guide the Call Committee. Thanks to the transition team—Chair Aimee Sue Larson, Sharon Barnes, Amy Baskin, Nichole Bassett, Linda Bure, Craig Byram, David Fabian, Katie Ferrell, Mandy Leopold, and Darlys Smith.

At the April 2025 council meeting, the following members were selected to serve on the Call Committee: Jason Baskin, Nichole Bassett, Dan Blilie, Craig Byram, Linda Bure, Marcos Castro, Mary Kruger, Joe Rosholt, and Sally Wahlstrom. They have met with Synod representative Pastor Barb Streed and are scheduling meetings to prepare for interviewing candidates.

The Church Council committees are engaged in providing leadership regarding worship, music, education, stewardship, financial guidance, property management, outreach and care, and personnel. We are fortunate to have an extensive number of congregation members who are filling roles to make St. Olaf a welcoming and joyful house of worship.

In late May, Craig Byram, Marcos Castro, Cheryl Dunlap, Jeanne Poppe, and Pastor Kris Ferkin attended the SE MN Synod Assembly held in Mankato. Bishop Regina Hassanally was re-elected to serve a six-year term.

A year ago, it might have seemed we were in a bit of a downward spiral, but never underestimate the power of prayer! Our faithfulness has brought us the strength to see things anew, embrace opportunities, and confront challenges. May we continue to see blessings in the weeks and months ahead.

Building & Property Committee Quarterly Report

Building & Property Committee Quarterly Report

The Building and Property Committee, comprised of Shari Sheppard, Dana Miller, Tom Heiny, Rick and Kathi Overocker, Dan Blilie, and Kyle Nelson, convened in early February. Mark Metcalf conducted a tour of the church to highlight critical repair needs. Key areas identified included window repairs for the stained glass cover at the main entrance, storm window maintenance, air conditioning unit issues in the sanctuary, ongoing roof repairs, and investigation of water damage in the lower level.

Center Roof: Eric Buntrok secured bids for the center roof replacement. Both bids exceeded the $35,000 budget allocated in the five-year plan. Kiker Brothers Inc was selected as the preferred and most cost-effective option, with

the added benefit of comprehensive patch work.

Air Handler and Condensing Unit: A bid was obtained from Harty Mechanical for the air handler and condensing unit. Our previous vendor, Aren’s Heating & Cooling, no longer manages commercial accounts. Harty Mechanical uses the existing St. Olaf control system software. Seeking a second bid might necessitate a software change, leading to increased expenses.

Landscaping: Dolan’s Landscaping addressed the bushes planted last fall, some of which did not survive the winter. These were replaced under a oneyear warranty.

Window Repairs: St. Olaf received two bids for window repairs. K&M Glass of Rochester was chosen to undertake the glass repairs.

The Monday morning crew continues to meet and handle ongoing minor repairs around the building, their contributions being greatly appreciated.

The Call Committee has officially begun its work in the search for St. Olaf’s next pastor. In the coming weeks, congregation members will be invited to submit names of potential candidates for consideration.

Celebrating Our Graduating Seniors — Class of 2025

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, during our 10:45 a.m. worship service, we had the joy of celebrating our graduating seniors with a special Baccalaureate blessing. As a church family, we surrounded them with prayers, encouragement, and heartfelt blessings as they step into the next chapter of their lives. Whether heading off to college, entering the workforce, or exploring new paths, we are so proud of all they’ve accomplished — and excited for all that lies ahead.

Congratulations, Class of 2025!

May your journey be guided by faith, wisdom, and the deep love of a community that’s always cheering you on.
