Our History Although our estate has a recorded history of over 900 years, it was John Penn (1760-1834), a soldier, scholar and poet, who was responsible for most of what can still be seen at the estate today. James Wyatt, architect to George III, worked on the development of The Mansion and monuments from 1790 to 1813. In 1791, Humphry Repton was commissioned to upgrade the Lancelot “Capability” Brown landscaping of the grounds. The estate was used as a private residence until 1908. Nick “Pa” Lane Jackson, founder of The Corinthians, purchased the estate and created Stoke Park, Britain’s first Country Club. One of his first objectives was to commission the famous amateur golfer and course architect Harry Colt to design the golf course. The first President was His Highness Prince Albert of Schleswig-Holstein and the first Vice-President was the Right Honourable Earl Howe.
In his 1910 book, The Golf Courses of the British Isles, Bernard Darwin wrote: “Stoke Park is a beautiful estate, and there is very good golf to be played there. There are plenty of things to do besides playing golf. We may get very hot at lawn tennis or keep comparatively cool at bowls or croquet, or, coolest of all, we may sit on the terrace or in the garden and give ourselves wholly and solely to loafing.” With such highly acclaimed names associated with the estate, each of the Mansion rooms have been titled after the historical figures. We have our Lancelot Suite, named after Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, who designed our beautiful landscape, and our fantastic Coke Suite, which is named after Sir Edward Coke, a former owner of Stoke Park and a prosecutor of Guy Fawkes. STOKE PARK
In the Movies Stoke Park has always had a close relationship with Pinewood Studios (5 miles away) and the British film industry. Two James Bond movies; Goldfinger (1964) and Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), were filmed here at Stoke Park. The epic duel between James Bond and Auric Goldfinger is still considered to be the most famous games of golf in cinematic history. The famous ‘mini-break’ and rowing scenes from Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001) were filmed in the Great Hall, the Pennsylvania Suite and on the lakes with Hugh Grant, Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth. In 2004, three movies were released all featuring Stoke Park: Wimbledon, Bride & Prejudice and Matthew Vaughn’s Layer Cake. Stoke Park features in many of Layer Cake’s scenes including the dramatic ending with Daniel Craig and Sienna Miller, filmed on the Mansion’s front steps. Guy Ritchie’s 2008 movie RocknRolla features the grass tennis courts and the 21st green. In 2010, we welcomed Madonna to Stoke Park to film scenes of her Wallace Simpson biopic, W.E and in 2012, Cameron Diaz and Oscar winner, Javier Bardem, shot scenes on the golf course for Ridley Scott’s movie, The Counselor. In 2019 Stoke Park made its debut in the The Crown, welcoming Oscar winner, Olivia Coleman.

Our Luxurious Bedrooms Stoke Park has 49 luxurious bedrooms and suites (21 in the Mansion and 28 in the Pavilion) and holds the coveted 5 AA Red Star rating. The Mansion bedrooms are more traditional in style and are all individually designed and furnished with fine art, priceless antiques, large comfortable beds, marble bathrooms and most have open fires. The Pavilion bedrooms have a luxurious contemporary feel. The carefully chosen furnishings, exquisite marble and fabrics are of the highest quality. The walls are adorned with hand-made mirrors as well as modern, iconic artwork, including oil paintings, large photographs, Andy Warhol lithos and film posters. Our Pennsylvania Suite (pictured opposite) was featured in the hit movie ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary.’

Families and Children As one of Condé Nast Traveller’s ‘Top 10 Child Friendly Country Retreats in the UK’, we have plenty on offer to keep little ones happy, right from check-in to check-out. From themed bed linen to rubber ducks for bath time, plus activity packs, the kids will be entertained for hours. Outdoors we have a mini football pitch and a fabulous playground with swings, slides and climbing frames. We have special Splash Times in our indoor heated swimming pool where children under 16 are able to make the most of this stunning facility. Parents can also book their children into our brand new Tinies Kids Club where they will be entertained with fun and games. Tinies also offer in-room baby-sitting and cots and roll up beds are also available. We are proud to offer the best junior golf coaching in the area with our Leadbetter Kids Academy so why not book your kids into the Academy for a lesson or one of the Kids camps. Tennis lessons are also available. For dining, children’s menus are available in The Orangery, where the little ones can also tuck into our Little Stars Afternoon Tea, specially created for the kids.

Dining Here at Stoke Park we have three beautiful restaurants that allow each of our guests to dine on a wide variety of award-winning food. Humphry’s fine dining restaurant offers outstanding modern British cuisine in a beautiful setting. In 2013 Humphry’s received 3 AA Rosettes for it’s outstanding cuisine and service. The Orangery offers an array of delicious meals and indulgent afternoon teas to be enjoyed overlooking some of the finest views in England. Our San Marco Cafe provides a relaxed experience where guests can enjoy a coffee or a light snack.
A member of the Craft Guild of Chefs, our Executive Chef Chris Wheeler joined Stoke Park in 2003. His impressive culinary background includes the role of Group Head Chef and righthand man to renowned French Chef, Jean Christophe Novelli. Over the past 18 years at Stoke Park Chris has been delighting guests with his innovative take on modern British cuisine with European influences, always using quality ingredients which are local, fresh and seasonal. Chris was awarded the prestigious Hotel Chef of the Year Award at the Hotel Cateys, then in 2017 Chris was appointed the UK Ambassador for the Quality Standard Mark Beef and Lamb Scheme. A regular on our TV screens having appeared on Hell’s Kitchen, Saturday Kitchen, Sunday Brunch and Great British Menu, Chris recently released his debut cookbook, The Ginger Chef ‘Served Up’.

The Pavilion The Pavilion offers a beautiful, modern fusion of energy and serenity. Our facilities include our award-winning Spa, indoor swimming pool, Italian marble steam rooms, a deep relaxation room, a private atrium with a stunning five metre tropical aquarium, Scandinavian sauna, outdoor hot tub, nail bar and boutique. As a resident you will also enjoy complimentary use of the fitness facilities, which include a 4,000 square foot state-ofthe-art gymnasium featuring cardiovascular and resistance based Matrix and Star Trac equipment, fitness, spinning studios,13 multi-surface tennis courts and 2 Padel courts. To ensure that you relax fully after your workout, you can sunbathe in the Spa garden, enjoy a healthy snack or bespoke smoothie in San Marco’s or take advantage of our award-winning Spa. For those looking to enhance their personal fitness, guests can book one of our expert personal trainers, who are on hand seven days a week. Golf Encircling our 300 acre Buckinghamshire parkland estate, the famous 27 hole Championship golf course is undisputedly one of the finest parkland courses in the country. Created in 1908 by eminent golf architect Harry Colt, the course has recently undergone major bunker refurbishment and has been the inspiration for many of the world’s most famous holes, including Augusta’s infamous 16th. The course itself has seen many impressive rounds in its prestigious history, including James Bond’s epic golfing duel in the 1964 classic 007 movie ‘Goldfinger’. Residents have use of our golf course and fantastic practice facilities including a putting green, Grass/ All Weather/ Indoor Double Ended Practice Range, Pitching Area and our New Short Game area with USGA Specification Greens. (Green fees apply) We also have a state-of-the-art Indoor Swing Studio with the ability to hit indoors or open onto the range with video analysis and Trackman Technology to assist coaching and custom fitting. In 2019 we added 3 GolfZon simulators, with the ability to play all 27 holes at Stoke Park in stunning reallife computerised graphics.
Golf World recently named Stoke Park as the ‘No.1 Golf Resort in England’, with Square Mile Magazine also awarding us their ‘ Golf Resort of the Year’ award at their annual awards. Our Professionals are available to guide your guests through your day. They will welcome you at registration, brief you on the day’s events and answer any questions you may have. They will prepare and issue your score cards, then collect them and collate the results. These will then be presented to your organiser in time for the prize presentation.

Tennis and Padel Tennis As a resident you will also have complimentary use of our 13 tennis courts. With three indoor carpet courts complementing the four floodlit artificial clay courts and six Wimbledon specification grass courts, tennis can now be played and enjoyed all year round – whatever the weather. We have talented LTA Professional Coaches who are available seven days a week to help you with your tennis tuition.
Padel Stoke Park is the first 5 Star Hotel to have Padel courts in the UK and is the only Club in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire to have this facility. Stoke Park’s tennis members have access to the Padel Courts, as well as guests staying in the hotel. Although first introduced to the UK in 1992, Padel has been played for over 100 years and has become a sporting phenomenon throughout many Hispanic nations including Spain, Mexico and Argentina. Tennis and Padel rackets can be hired at Spa reception however appropriate tennis attire is required. Pre-booking before your stay is recommended. Indoor carpet shoes are required for the indoor courts, these can also be hired from Spa reception.

The Boodles Since 2002, The Boodles has attracted the world’s tennis elite to play in the most exclusive, intimate and luxurious grass court tournament of the summer season. Set within our beautiful grounds, the tournament combines world class tennis with a quintessentially English summer garden party. Year on year, The Boodles provides the perfect environment for the top male players to hone their skills in the build up to Wimbledon. Boris Becker, Goran Ivanisevic, Tim Henman, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Andy Murray, Juan Martin del Potro and Stefanos Tsitsipas have all graced our Championship court and 2021 is set to feature even more icons of the game.
